When a ship sinks too fast for anyone to launch the liferaft, the raft has to do it by itself. This animation shows exactly how: the hydrostatic release unit, the weak link, the painter line, the inflation and what happens in the first minutes on the water. We also look at the real case of the scallop dredger Joanna C (2020): a hydrostatic release that worked, and a liferaft that still never reached the surface. What went wrong, what changed afterwards, and the 10-second check you can do every time you pass a liferaft station. Was passiert, wenn du mit deinem Schlauchkatamaran kenterst und dabei sogar den Kontakt zum Boot verlierst? Genau hier liegt der entscheidende Vorteil dieses neuen Sicherheitssystems. Anders als bei einer herkömmlichen Kenterboje wird diese Boje nicht dauerhaft aufgeblasen. Stattdessen kannst du sie erst dann manuell auslösen, wenn du sie wirklich benötigst! 🔴 Die wichtigsten Vorteile: ✅ Keine dauerhaft aufgeblasene Kenterboje – das Boot kann zunächst vollständig durchkentern. ✅ Geringeres Risiko des Abtreibens – in der gezeigten Situation bleibt der durchgekenterte Katamaran im Wasser liegen, auch wenn du den Kontakt verlierst. ✅ Manuelle Auslösung – erst wenn du zurück am Boot bist, wird die Kenterboje aufgeblasen. ✅ Einfacheres Aufrichten – die aufgeblasene Boje unterstützt dich beim Wiederaufrichten des Katamarans. Vuoi capire finalmente cos'è il VANG, a cosa serve e come regolarlo correttamente per far correre la tua barca a vela? In questo video facciamo chiarezza su uno dei sistemi di regolazione più importanti e spesso meno compresi della randa! Analizziamo nel dettaglio la fisica del vang, come influisce sul grosso (grasso) della vela e sul twist, e vediamo le regolazioni esatte da fare corda alla mano in base al vento e alla direzione in cui stai navigando. Se vuoi migliorare la forma delle tue vele, ridurre lo sbandamento o guadagnare quel nodo in più, questo è il tutorial che stavi cercando. Come funziona il vang e come utilizzarlo a bordo di una barca? Vang: regola posizione verticale del boma e profilo randa. lascato per evitare straorza. come usare il vang in bolina a seconda dell'intensità del vento Il comportamento e l'uso del vang in bolina variano notevolmente a seconda che tu stia navigando su una deriva (specialmente quelle senza strallo di prua strutturale o con alberi flessibili, come il Laser/ILCA) o su un cabinato. Ecco come regolare il vang in bolina in base all'intensità del vento: 💨 1. Vento Leggero (0 - 7 nodi) In queste condizioni l'obiettivo è mantenere la vela grassa e far scorrere i filetti fluidi sulla balumina. • Cabinato: Il vang deve essere completamente lasco. La regolazione della balumina si fa esclusivamente con la scotta della randa e il trasto. Se cazzi il vang, rischi di chiudere la balumina e "strozzare" il flusso del vento, fermando la barca. • Deriva: Il vang è puntato o leggermente lasco. Deve solo impedire al boma di saltare verso l'alto quando la barca incontra le ondine, ma non deve applicare tensione per non appiattire la vela. 💨 2. Vento Medio (8 - 15 nodi) È la condizione in cui la barca esprime la massima potenza. • Cabinato: Il vang viene "puntato" (messo in chiaro). Non deve cazzare il boma verso il basso, ma deve essere teso quanto basta per far sì che, se decidi di lascare un filo di scotta randa durante una raffica, il boma non salga modificando il profilo che hai scelto. • Deriva: Si inizia a cazzare moderatamente. Serve a stabilizzare l'albero e a dare una prima forma più stabile alla randa, controllando che il filetto superiore sulla balumina (tell-tale) voli parallelo e non si nasconda dietro la vela. 💨 3. Vento Forte (oltre i 15-18 nodi) Qui entriamo nel pieno della tecnica del vang sheeting per depotenziare la barca (depowering). • Cabinato: Il vang viene cazzato con forza. Questo blocca l'altezza del boma e mantiene la randa piatta. In questo modo, quando arriva una raffica forte, puoi lascare la scotta randa per scaricare il vento in eccesso senza che la parte alta della vela si chiuda (cosa che farebbe sbandare ancora di più la barca). • Deriva (es. Laser/ILCA): Il vang viene cazzato a ferro (al massimo). Sulle derive, questa trazione spinge la trozza del boma in avanti, costringendo l'albero a flettersi nella parte centrale e alta. La flessione dell'albero: • Appiattisce completamente la pancia della randa. • Apre la balumina in alto, permettendo al vento in eccesso di "sfogare" automaticamente. • Ti permette di timonare mantenendo la barca piatta con meno sforzo alle cinghie. ⚠️ Regola d'oro per la sicurezza (e le andature) Ricorda sempre che se decidi di poggiare (passare dalla bolina al lasco/poppa) con vento forte, la primissima cosa da fare è lascare il vang. Se poggi con il vang cazzato a ferro, il boma rischia di toccare l'acqua, causando una violenta straorza o il ribaltamento (scuffia) della barca. This is the story of SV Tapatya, a self-built, Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. Moving firewood in remote Alaska isn't always as simple as loading up a truck! We were back in Port Protection on Prince of Wales Island, Alaska last month, helping move some large logs from the beach in front of Liz's house in Back Bay over to Veronica's beach, where they'll be used for firewood. The logs were the product of Scott's hazard tree removal. Sounds simple...... Getting those heavy logs off the beach proves to be quite a challenge! Between shallow water, rocks, stubborn logs, and maneuvering the boat with towlines, it takes a little patience and plenty of teamwork. But that's life in remote Alaska. You work with the resources available, figure things out as you go, and help your neighbors when you can. Come along as we wrestle these logs off Liz's beach and deliver them to Veronica's for firewood! This 57ft catamaran had been abandoned for 10 years when we took ownership of her and after 12 months of hard grind, she’s looking pretty bloody good! But of all the jobs we’ve tackled on this project, they haven’t all been perfect. We don’t see that as a failure but an opportunity to do it better the second time around. This week we’ve been graced with yet another opportunity to improve! Our cockpit is delaminating again and we’re going to tackle the repair all by ourselves. Quando estamos em terra, diante de uma emergência, normalmente basta pegar o telefone e pedir ajuda. Mas no mar as coisas são bem diferentes. Dependendo de onde estamos navegando, o socorro pode levar horas para chegar. E, durante esse tempo, precisamos contar com os recursos que temos a bordo e, principalmente, com o nosso conhecimento. 🩹 A CAIXA DE PRIMEIROS SOCORROS Ter uma caixa de primeiros socorros a bordo não significa simplesmente guardar alguns medicamentos e curativos em um compartimento do barco. Ela precisa estar completa, organizada, protegida da umidade e, acima de tudo, todos precisam saber onde está e como utilizar seus materiais. ⚠️ COMO AGIR DIANTE DE UMA EMERGÊNCIA? Um acidente pode acontecer com qualquer pessoa, inclusive com o comandante. E é justamente por isso que toda a tripulação precisa estar preparada para agir, manter a calma, reconhecer os riscos, prestar os primeiros cuidados dentro de sua capacidade e buscar ajuda quando necessário. ⛵ A SEGURANÇA É RESPONSABILIDADE DE TODOS! Uma das coisas que mais procuro transmitir aos meus alunos é que um barco não pode depender exclusivamente do conhecimento do seu comandante. Uma tripulação bem preparada precisa conhecer os procedimentos básicos de segurança, saber onde estão os equipamentos de emergência e compreender como colaborar diante de uma situação inesperada. Porque, no mar, o conhecimento, a prevenção e o trabalho em equipe podem fazer toda a diferença.
