How a Liferaft Floats Free From a Sinking Ship

When a ship sinks too fast for anyone to launch the liferaft, the raft has to do it by itself. This animation shows exactly how: the hydrostatic release unit, the weak link, the painter line, the inflation and what happens in the first minutes on the water. We also look at the real case of the scallop dredger Joanna C (2020): a hydrostatic release that worked, and a liferaft that still never reached the surface.
