► L’an passé, les voiliers à deux ou trois coques étaient 33 : malgré les difficultés évidentes de logistique liées à des bateaux dont la largeur est 1,5 à 2 fois supérieure à celle d’un monocoque, les organisateurs de l’ARC sont parvenus à rendre progressivement l’événement – la plus grande transat du monde ! – multi friendly. Comment ont-ils procédé ? En multipliant les départs… ► Ville hôte du départ depuis le premier ARC en 1986, Las Palmas a connu une belle effervescence pendant une bonne partie du mois de novembre – contrôle de sécurité, bricolage et optimisations, mais également visite de l’intérieur des terres de Gran Canaria et séminaires et animations proposées par les organisateurs : impossible de s’ennuyer ! Au cours des dernières 48 heures à Las Palmas, alors que les équipages effectuaient leurs tous derniers préparatifs et avitaillement pour le début de leur traversée de l'Atlantique, de fortes rafales de vent de nord-est ont généré une importante houle de 1,5 m ; des conditions idéales pour les surfeurs aguerris, mais moins pour les estomacs encore peu amarinés. Le vent était orienté un plus à l'est que ce qui est typique pour un départ ARC et surtout un peu plus fort - 18 à 20 nœuds. Les prévisions météorologiques pour les premières 24 heures annonçaient des vents de 20 nœuds, avec des rafales plus fortes dans la zone d'accélération au sud de Gran Canaria. Cette zone s'étend jusqu’à 100 milles sous le vent de l’île dont le sommet à près de 2 000 m provoque une augmentation significative de la force des vents au sud du relief. Les skippers ont anticipé ces conditions en prenant des ris dès le départ et en piquant au sud de la route, à l'abri des vents les plus forts pendant les premières 24 heures. La flotte devrait profiter ensuite d’alizés plus stables, en particulier au sud de la loxodromie, un schéma qui devrait se maintenir pendant au moins la première semaine de la traversée, laquelle devrait prendre en moyenne 18 à 20 jours. Tous les bateaux ARC sont équipés de trackers satellites YB Tracking, permettant à la famille et aux amis de suivre la flotte via le site web ARC ou l'application YB Races. We were sad to leave the beautiful sand lagoon anchorage at Double Island Point but sailing north in Spring, we need to make use of every weather window available, so it was another crossing of the ever-changing Wide Bay Bar. We have never followed the same route twice over this notorious piece of water because the sand and channels are constantly moving. Then it was on to Gary’s Anchorage on the inside of K’Gari (Fraser Island) to sit out heavy rain, contrary winds and a very scary but spectacular lightening storm. It wasn’t all bad though as we did catch some very tasty crabs between the rain and in Our Galley, Karen cooks up fantastic, Persian chicken dish. HALLOWE'EM (1926) William Fife III designed the 24.7m cutter Hallowe'en for Lt Col JFN Baxendale just in time for the ORC FastNet. The designer of several classic yachts still racing today, once said, "Halloween is the perfect gentleman's yacht. Jewels like her are rare." Hallowe'en crossed the finish line some 10 hours before the next competitor in the 2nd Fastnet Race. The previous record stood until 1939, when the new course was changed to go out through the Needles Channel, rather than around the east coast of the Isle of Wight as it had been since 1925. For many years, COTTON BLOSSOM IV dominated ocean racing as a yawl-rigged boat. She returned to the Atlantic under new owner Alfred Larsen, a Norwegian industrialist, after racing in the Mediterranean for several years. Prince Olaf, the future king of Norway, helmed her numerous times as the official yacht of the Royal Norwegian Racing Club. After crossing the Atlantic in 1938, she disappeared from radar. She was later discovered by Walter Wheeler and renamed Cotton Blosson IV before going on to compete in ocean races and eventually being donated to the Classic Boat Museum in New Port, Rhode Island. As a result of some major reconstructions in 1994–95 in France, she underwent a further transformation in 1998–99. She now appears perhaps better than at any time during her long and eventful life. If you are looking for an excellent and fast vintage wooden sailing yacht to charter, Halloween is an excellent choice. As one of the most beautiful Fifes ever built, she continues to win classic regattas while also making fast passages across the oceans. 12mR (NAME TBA) International rules govern the design of racing yachts in the "12 Metre Class". In a class, boats can compete fairly while experimenting with their designs at the same time. '12 Metre' is not a specific measurement or length of the boat. Formulas determine the parameters that govern its design and construction, and then calculations are made using those parameters. It is typical for "12 Metre" class boats to be 65 to 75 feet long (20 to 23 meters), sloop-rigged, and have a mast approximately 85 feet (26 meters) high. 1907 was the year that the first "12 Metres" were built. The 12 Metre class was raced in the Olympic Games of 1908, 1912, and 1920 by a few boats. Its design of America's Cup boats from 1958 to 1987 played a significant role in its history. For a boat to remain competitive, it must follow the 12 Metre Formula. With our friends Tony and Natalie joining us, we sail across St Vincent's Gulf to Port Vincent on Yorke Peninsula. Episode 6 of Short Stories showcases that one of the best Giant Black Marlin fishing destinations in the world is right on our doorstep on the Great Barrier Reef. Every year the heavy tackle season brings renowned captains, boats and serious anglers to Cooktown in Far North Queensland, on a mission to catch a Grander - the 1000lb Black Marlin. We spent 5 days and nights fishing with our good mate Kleiny, one of Australia’s top game fishing captains, who runs “Deploy” - a 58 foot Assegai, built purely for this type of fishing up on the Great Barrier Reef. With 5 of our best mates and 2 awesome crew, we had the experience of a lifetime. Mornings started with swims and snorkelling on the reef, followed by spearfishing for some Coral Trout and a jig for some Dogtooth Tuna, or mixing it for a stick bait on some GTs - to then bait fishing catching bait big enough to call dinner for a week – which includes Spanish Mackeral, tuna, wahoo, scaleys, the list goes on. Afternoons were spent trolling the reefs, targeting marlin in comfort on the deck and enjoying the boat's mezzanine. And in the evenings we'd relive the moments from the day, catch trevally right off the back of the boat (on a handline with a hook and no bait!), and drank and ate like kings with 5-star catering cooked fresh by the crew.  Our first fish was one most only dream about; a giant black marlin well over 1000lbs!! Followed by a 700lb, 600lb, and a few other monsters, totalling 9 marlin in 5 days and hundreds of other fish and good times.  Once you experience a trip like this, safe to say, you'll never go a year without heading north again.

At 1920hrs this Wednesday, November 23, the race management of the 12th edition of La Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe received a message from CROSS Antilles to tell them that Gilles Buekenhout (JESS) had triggered his distress beacon. Buekenhout was the long time leader of the Rhum Multi Class on the Martin Fischer-Benoit Cabaret designed 12m trimaran. The skipper contacted Race Direction some seven minutes later to say that he had capsized 225 miles NE of the Tête à l'Anglais. The Belgian skipper is on board and reported that he is not injured.

Iva W. is a custom refitted and restored 1929 Chesapeake Bay Buyboat. She started her life shorter vertically, and as a workboat hauling crabs and oysters in the bay. In 1998, the IVA W was converted from her original low-slung, efficient workboat into a floating Bed & Breakfast. The original pilothouse was lifted off the hull, and a new galley level was added, before the pilothouse was installed above, and forward of her original position. The original, sleeping quarters / galley which was directly aft of the pilot house, was extended to create a larger space. After 6 years of modification, followed by 2 years In Florida, she returned home to the Chesapeake Bay, where she spent the next 4 years idle, and falling into disrepair. In January 2010, the Current Owner stumbled across a Craigslist listing for a vintage buyboat in need of serious attention and repairs. His first Impression upon seeing her, was that it would simply be too much work, too many dollars, and would require a skillset way above that which he possessed. But then he began to see the potential, and within 2 months, he was starting work on her. Over the years, she has been completely refit, and outfitted to make her the most comfortable boat possible. The systems the current owners have implemented have been designed to make her operable by a single sailor. Every comfort has been added to ensure that when their family is on board, it is an amazing experience. All systems have been replaced, A/C and heat have been added throughout, and she is quite easy to operate. She has been completely restored to the highest standards of comfort and safety, while maintaining the integrity of her honorable past. The current owners recognize they are merely the latest in a very short line of stewards who have had the privilege and honor of working her, enjoying her, sharing her, and most importantly, protecting her. Bonjour à tous Une nouvelle étape en image. On quitte Santa Monza après de bons moments passés avec la famille. Direction Bonifacio. Que dire, navigation tranquille. Des paysages grandioses, magnifiques, beaux, exceptionnels... On ne fera pas le sud Sardaigne, ni l'Italie cette année. Ce sera pour 2023. C'est décidé on passe l'hiver en Corse. Je vous laisse regarder ces belles images de notre arrivée sur Bonifacio, un autre film suivra sur le port et la haute ville. Bon film et à bientôt Isabelle
