Running through the central heart of the Scottish highlands lies a 200 year old canal, designed to provide a short-cut for sailing ships of old from Scotland's west coast to the north sea, avoiding the treacherous Pentland Firth and Cape Wrath. 22 miles of canal and 29 locks were dug to link 3 natural lochs, creating a 60 mile waterway across the country.
