The jib bangs against the mast and gets beat up and doesn’t provide much power. You turn on the engine and you then must put up with exhaust blowing across the boat. Neither are very attractive options. For years, UK Sailmakers has taught that cruising spinnakers were the solution to this sailing dilemma, but not everyone has come onboard with that philosophy. o Setting a spinnaker with the aid of a dousing sock still requires someone to go forward to raise the dousing sock and some cruising sails feel leaving the cockpit is a real P-I-A! You can’t set it at the beginning of the sail and just have it “set” until you are ready for it. o Now there is a much better alternative! o UK Sailmakers has developed the Easyfurl Code D, a cruising spinnaker that can be pre-set and is easy to release and furl from the safety and comfort of the cockpit. The Easyfurl Code D is a cruising spinnaker with a nearly straight luff that furls from the bottom up, just like a genoa. With a regular, continuous line furler, it’s easier to use than a Stasher system and less expensive than top-down furlers. The Code D gets its name because its shape, a straight luff and round leech, makes it look like the letter “D.”

I had to remove the keel to find where the leak was. Water was coming in from the keel housing (cavity). It ended up having a crack next to the keel lock bolt. I fiberglassed it shut. The keel lock is not necessary in my opinion. If one runs aground the keel can kick back and not rip out the keel lock.

Ziel des Trainings ist der Gewinn an Erfahrung, Kompetenz und der sichere Umgang mit der Yacht auch in schwierigen Situationen. Skippertraining ist Bordpraxis in ständig wechselnden Rollen und erfordert, sich selbst und die Crew auf Manöver vorzubereiten, ruhig und souverän zu führen und sich an der Vorleine, am Fender oder am Ruder führen zu lassen. Alle Manöver werden mit dem Trainer und der Crew ausgewertet und natürlich auch die eigene Rolle reflektiert. This week we are going to Saint-Vaast-Le-Hougue. For the first time we try to anchor in tidal waters where the charts said 0.4 meters of depth, which felt a bit crazy. Don't worry though, this was around neap time and we had done the calculations correct, so we were still afloat in the morning 😉 We explore the old fortification and find that our log transducer had a whole small marine farm in it from our time in Le Havre - no wonder it didn't work 🙈 Enjoy, and fair winds! ________ We are Emmy and Marcus, a Swedish couple who has decided to leave our home and set sail. It is time to leave the Marquesas Islands and make our way to the Tuamotus. The weather window looks good and we plan a late afternoon departure from Ua-Pou so that we will arrive in Tahanea Atoll in the morning. Entering an atoll is not as easy as entering a typical anchorage. You need to plan carefully and arrive at the east facing atoll entrance at slack tide and wait for the start of incoming current. The water that enters and leaves the atolls with the tide change can only do so through the passes (breaks) in the atoll. The current that flows through these passes can be well over 5 knots and if you get wind against current, you will find yourself in standing waves, strong current and a very dangerous situation. Planning is key and you have to take into account that although it may state that it is slack tide, it could be that slack still needs to take place in the pass due to the amount of water still trying to exit the pass. To help with this, download the 'Guestimator' by 'Soggy Paws. This is a data sheet that help you work out a more accurate time though it is not fool proof as there are a lot of dependants but it is a great help. The Tuamotus are paradise. Take your time here. Watch out for coral bommies. Float your chain. Respect the locals. You will love it.
