Even though Sushi lives on a sailboat, she always finds ways to run around and play!
Sushi loves playing fetch with us on the boat. And it's easy exercise if we can't get her to shore to run around and stretch her legs!
We continue our journey down the ICW from Virginia into North Carolina. Along the way the weather cooperated, but we had other problems brewing... [Filmed November 19-23, 2022] #sailingcouple #liveaboardlife #sailboat #sailingadventures #sailboatlife #bengalcat #bengalcatlovers
Our Bengal kitten, Sushi, keeps accidentally dropping her toys off of our sailboat while she's playing. The worst part is that she doesn't let us know until it's floating away! Luckily we bought a net which makes toy recovery much easier... #gatosdelmar #catswhosail #sailingadventures #sailingcouple #sailboat #bengalcat
We've never called a bridge to open before, or been through a lock. We've never had to navigate around so many big ships in such a tight space either. We were nervous to leave the safety of the Chesapeake Bay and go out into the real world... In this video, we start heading south on the ICW through Norfolk, VA to Great Bridge Dock. Our kitten, Sushi, had her first swimming lesson while we were at anchor (thankfully)! #gatosdelmar #catswhosail #catoverboard #sailingadventures #adventuresushi #liveaboardlife #sailingcouple #sailboat
Sushi is an active boat cat, and we need to keep finding creative ways for her to get her energy out while at anchor. #catswhosail #gatosdelmar #liveaboardlife #sailboat #bengalcat #bengalcatlovers #adventuresushi
Summer removes the black tank from our Beneteau 411 forward head. We converted our conventional toilet into a composting toilet, so we no longer need this tank to hold our poo! #boatwork #boatrefit #beneteau #sailboat
We both love and hate the Chesapeake Bay. It's where we learned to sail, but it's mud brown waters won't be missed! In this video we take a few days to get to the bottom of the bay. Along the way we hide from Hurricane Nicole, test our @RainmanDesal watermaker, and buy a bunch of provisions before we start the ICW south. We're not gonna lie, we are NOT experienced sailors... and constant 30-35 knot winds entering the Chesapeake was too much for us to handle that day! After enjoying a few days of beautiful weather in Solomon Island, we decided to get a move on to Deltaville, VA. We checked all the weather apps before deciding to head out that morning, but we quickly realized that the predictions were WRONG! We did manage to get better weather the next day and we sailed to a nice quiet anchorage just off of Point Lookout in Scotland, MD for the night. Anchored by Point Lookout at the mouth of the Potomac River. We decided to go ashore to have a picnic and do a little exploring. Turns out this area is home to Fort Lincoln, an American Civil War site with the largest northern prison camp of the war. Have you ever wanted to quit your job, sell EVERYTHING, and live on a sailboat? Well... We just did! Are we crazy?! It's been a challenging few years of outfitting the boat with the goal of sailing it to the Caribbean. Many people were skeptical that we would actually follow through and cast off the dock lines for the last time. Who's laughing now?! Day 1 of cruising complete ? Our biggest project yet! Our old bottom paint was failing and our thru hulls were corroding! We hauled out at Bert Jabin Yacht Yard to take care of both problems at once. Doing most of the work ourselves, we didn't know what we were getting ourselves into! Incredibly hot weather and back breaking labor, after 4 days the thru hulls were complete and we finished prepping to start the paint. Thankfully we didn't sand the bottom paint ourselves. Instead we wanted to start fresh and got the bottom professionally blasted down to bare gel coat. After days prepping the bottom of the boat we toiled for two MORE days to apply four coats of Interlux 2000 barrier paint followed by two coats of Trinidad Pro. We thought this was going to be easy peasy, right? I've painted the entire inside of my house, how hard could it be to paint a boat? We were so wrong? Constant crouching on our knees then standing back up - lather, rinse, repeat? The Trinidad Pro has so much copper in it, holding that heavy roller full of paint above our head for hours was brutal! On the bright side, we both got a full body workout two days in a row ? We finished up the last coat of paint around 9pm and it wasn't until the next morning that we could appreciate the fruits of our labor, it was so worth it. ? Will I ever volunteer to paint the bottom of another boat?? Oh, heck no! If you're wondering how much money projects like this cost, check it???? Thru hulls = $800 Barrier paint = $1000 Anti-fouling paint = $1050 Bottom blasting = $2000 Yard fees = $1650 Misc parts, supplies, & consumables = $300 TOTAL without labor = $6800 Cost of therapy = TBD?? ??? #boatwork #sailingcouple #beneteau411 #sailboat #boatproject #diy #shorts
No more propane on our boat! All electric baby! With 920 Watts of solar installed, we decided to gut the old propane stove and rebuild it with an electric induction cooktop. It was actually easier than we thought, and involved drilling out a few rivets and repurposing some parts. The result ended up looking pretty great, and we even have a shelf in the middle for storing pots and pans. Unfortunately, only a single burner induction cooktop would fit, so we'll have to make do. We moved the microwave to the bottom of the stove, which frees up some much needed counter space. We purchased a small countertop convection toaster oven so we can still toast and bake things, if needed. Have you ever thought about doing this? It's the dumbest boat cooking video you'll wish you never watched. We had some fun on our first sailing adventure filming Summer prepare a taco dinner for the crew while at anchor.
We've always hated having to remove and replace our hatch boards to enter and exit the boat. Companionway swinging doors are much easier to use, but would need to be custom made. And that's where Zarcor Solutions comes in. In this short (non-instructional) video, we install the Zarcor doors on our boat, and you get to see how awesome they are! #boatwork #boatrefit #beneteau411 #sailingcouple #zarcorsolutions
What's in the boooox?! ? One of our larger purchases at the Annapolis Sailboat Show has arrived! It's a Mantus Scuba Compressor. This little baby will allow us to refill our own scuba tanks while we're out on the boat sailing around the Caribbean. #mantusanchors #mantusscuba #sailinglife #mantusmarine #shorts
We renamed the boat! When we bought the boat, her name was Orion, we thought that name was too common for our liking. We wanted something more personal and easy to say and spell over the radio. We spent six months coming up with silly puns for the name, but none felt like the one. In December 2020 we suddenly lost our beloved sailor kitty, Mojo-Jojo, and to honor his life we knew Mojo was the perfect fit. Sailors are very superstitious and renaming a boat is known to be bad luck. A ritual is performed that includes making a deal with Poseidon to purge the old name and accept the new name into his ledger as well as appeasing the four wind gods to bless us with fair winds on our journeys. So here we are!
May 23, 2021 marked the one year anniversary of owning our boat! So we took her on our very first extended sailing adventure where we anchored for a few nights in St. Michaels, Maryland with a couple friends. Brian got the inverter working the day before we set sail so we could use our 110v power and make coffee while at anchor. There wasn't much wind on our voyage, but we were still able to do some sailing by trying out the spinnaker for the first time. It was awesome! We arrived in St. Michaels, dropped anchor, and popped a bottle of champagne to celebrate the beautiful day of sailing and all the hard work we've put into the boat over the past year. Over the next two days, we took the dinghy to shore and did some exploring in the quaint little town with Matt and Jessica, we had a blast! With COVID restrictions easing up in MD, we were able to comfortably explore more places in town. On our last day, we cooked brunch, weighed anchor, and sailed home to Eastport. Overall, our first real sailing adventure was a success! We can't thank Matt and Jessica enough for accompanying us on this historic journey.
After a year of refitting our boat, we finally got around to actually sailing her! Since we don't really know what we're doing yet, our friends, Matt and Jessica, graciously offered to come along and show us the ropes. We went out for the day as a shakedown to test our systems and make sure everything works (which it mostly did).
