If you aren't familiar with the term Surface Effect, you have probably experienced the sensation on a plane when it is landing. Just before touchdown it suddenly feels like the aircraft just doesn’t want to go lower. It just wants to go on and on due to the air that is trapped between the wing and the runway. This phenomenon or air cushion is called (aerodynamic) “Surface Effect”. Craft in surface effect experience a 250% molecular efficiency increase significantly reducing horsepower/weight ratios by over 75%. The Wright brothers flew in Surface Effect in their early flights close to the ground and benefited from surface effect without even knowing it existed. Navegar a vela en invierno al abrigo de las Islas Cíes en la ría de Vigo es un auténtico privilegio. Si es que las Rías Baixas son un auténtico encanto, te embrujan. Sales de la marina, izas las velas, primero un bordo amurados a babor, virada y amuramos a estribor. De repente nos encontramos con las bateas de Moaña. Las dejamos a barlovento para no correr riesgos innecesarios. Nos toca el siguiente bordo en el islote Arroás, en Domaio, península del Morrazo. Después de varios divertidos bordos, fondeamos en la playa de la Borna. Mientras Bea cocina un bacalao con patatas yo me pongo el equipo de buceo y me voy a revisar la hélice y la obra viva. Al atardecer volvemos a puerto, a Punta Lagoa y nos damos cuenta que no podría haber otra manera mejor que disfrutar un domingo de invierno. Te invito a contagiarte un poco de mi pasión. Episode 16: This is Montenegro: Orahovac Castle Cass and Shelly with Sailing Eriskay have been away for a few weeks as it was stormy and not great weather to explore the beauty which surround us. We found a break in the weather and have noticed a castle across the bay which we have wanted to hike to for a while. Today was that day! We hiked to Orahovac Keep, it was not the castle we were initially searching for but it’s all about the adventure. We found a trail on Apple Maps near what we thought was the castle and decided to find out what we could find. We were fortunate to enjoy stunning views, a great hike and find a keep for the castle 2 peaks away. The last time we visited Cumberland Island, was last summer when we were on our way north to the Chesapeake Bay. Randy and I fell in love with the island, the wildlife, and its remoteness and couldn't wait to visit again. As we headed south recently from Brunswick, GA, we were able to experience Cumberland Island in a different season - winter. We quickly noticed that the winter months have fewer visitors, and it felt like we had the place to ourselves (other than ferry workers and park rangers). Since our first visit, Cumberland Island has become the "magical" or "enchanting" place on the ICW. And how lucky are we to be able to visit it by private vessel? We enjoy exploring all parts of the island, from the trails and marsh to the beaches and mansion ruins, but it's the wildlife and remoteness that keeps us wanting to come back. Words and pictures cannot describe the experience as you immerse yourself under the canopy of mossy oaks while hearing the chirps of birds, the whinnying of horses, and the rustling leaves made by the armadillos. As hikers and nature lovers, this place is paradise. We enjoyed some days around the second largest reef in the planet. Would you imagine that it's located in Brazil? We had no idea. It's so cool to sail around your own country and discover new things. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). I don’t have a pension or a deep bank account to rely on. I departed alone one cold February day from the south of France to Barcelona. And continued along the Spanish coast to Tangiers Morocco. I went on to the Canary Islands. I sailed around the entire archipelago and got extensive training in how to manage my boat in extreme conditions. There I met cool and caliente people and also learned that I can stay young and enjoy life. I continued south to the Cape Verde Islands. I met some of the most beautiful people I’ve ever seen of my travels. And got stuck there because of the pandemic. It was one of the best times of my life. I sailed to eight of the ten Cape Verde islands and discovered an amazing tiny African nation. I learned to speak the local Creole language. So as I could better understand the Cape Verdean culture and lifestyle. And to enjoy life and love again. I recovered from hip replacement surgery so that I could get back in the saddle. And sailed on to the great African continent where few sailors dare go. This is my story. One of an geezer living the life of a full time sailor with all it’s perils and pleasures. While alone on anchor we were hit by a severe storm. We endured this storm for several hours and we eventually had a failure of our standing rigging which nearly caused the whole mast to fall. We observe the most incredible method of unloading semi trailers before hiring a car and checking out Yellow Rock, Cape Nelson Lighthouse, Bishops Rock, seal colony from Victoria's highest cliffs, the petrified forest and the blowholes. WHO ARE WE? We’re Chris and Jo and we have been living on our Seawind 1260 since January 2019. In our first year we bring our yacht down the east coast of Australia and sail it out to New Caledonia. After cruising further north up the east coast of Australia in 2020, we decided to circumnavigate Australia during leaving in 2021 and still going around. We had previously owned fishing and water skiing boats, but after a couple years crewing in South Australia decided to jump right in and make a sea change. The day has finally arrived. We are scheduled to get back in the water. Just a few minor projects to complete... Wax the hull, install the prop, paint the bottom of the keel and stand plates, then wash the boat and were done. Minor stuff. It was very surreal to see the all the stands knocked down under our boat and think those 8 stands kept us up in the air and secure for 2 weeks while we did some major work in the boat. It was scary in the beginning going up and down the ladder to get into Honu. However, it quickly become old hat as we were lugging supplies, a/c units, laundry, groceries…ect up and down every day. I am so proud of the work we have completed in the past 2 weeks. What started out as a quick bottom job and sea cocks turned into lesson in so much more. We learned how to repair the blisters on our hull, repair a damaged rudder and fiberglass it properly to make it strong. There was gel coat and electrolysis issues, plumbing and never ending sanding. But we got it done and we now feel so safe in our Hunter 460 knowing that she is safe and secure below the water line. Now it’s time to make this turtle fly again and get her back in the water. Not only is it important to have a strong and reliable boat but it is also a must to have a strong and reliable partner. We both say it to each other all the time that there is no one else that we could do this with. It’s not just the lovey relationship stuff, it’s also the compatibility to work with another human in a very tight space and be in there space 24/7. This is not all sunshine and rainbows…the magical and romantic go off sailing into the sunset together. However, as you know there is a lot of hard work, understanding, and compassion that goes into every day. We are so thankful to have found each other and to have this opportunity to share our dreams together. 🧡💙 If you haven't guessed it yet we are very OCD and that means everything must have a proper place on the boat.
