Covid times. 2021 was a tough year and as a long Sydney lockdown loomed we had no desire to spend it on our small floating home. Bonjour, Un soir venteux (20/25 Nds) de juillet 2022 en baie de Lampaul, après avoir vu 5 voiliers déraper dont deux sur Pierrick II , l'équipage était en veille... Un First 285 arrive avec GV haute sans moteur et vient mouiller devant nous avec une attitude étrange. Rapidement le First est sur nous, quelques mots du capitaine Dominique pour me dire qu'il est en panne moteur, et go mis en place des pare-battages d'amarres et nous voilà sécurisé tous les deux... Diagnostique : Dominique à naviguer avec le coupe circuit en position 1+ 2 et a donc vidé les deux batteries, moteur et servitude. Démontage d'une des deux batteries moteur de Pierrick II et démarrage du moteur du First. on laisse tourner trois heures à 1500 Tours, et Dominique restera à couple de Pierrick II toute la nuit pour être certain de redémarrer le lendemain matin. Après une bonne nuit de sommeil je me réveille au lever du jour pour une sortie pêche, à mon retour Dominique est prêt à appareiller... je l'accompagne sur une bouée disponible et lui souhaite bon vent belle mer ! Cette expérience nous a permis de comprendre l'intérêt de communiquer en amont quand on est en avarie Un appel VHF aurai permis d'aviser les plaisanciers sur le fait qu'une panne ne permettait pas une manoeuvre sécurisé, et une aide aurai pu être proposer comme de monter à bord par exemple...ça sécurise clairement une telle situation. A savoir...il n'y a pas eu de casse mais c'est passé très près ! Enfin tout c'est bien fini et c'est bien le principal. Thierry et Christel

So we got rid of our 200 pound rigid dinghy from our Gulfstar 44 Motorsailor. There are 3 reasons... it was too heavy to lift, we always got soaked on it and it would take water over the transom and start to sink in moderate conditions. I finish my time as skipper of yacht Seagull as Alan joins me in Padstow. It is time for a crew change and I am so happy to have him back on board. I had a wonderful time spending two weeks sailing with my daughter, her boyfriend and a close family friend Livvy. It was important to me that they had a good time, particularly as George had never been sailing before. Boat life feels very different when you are living with adults in their twenties. The freediving mechanic For those of you that don’t know us, we’ve just finished refitting our Open 66, here in Fiji. Last week we had our first real cyclone scare of the season and decided to seek shelter in a protected bay surrounded by reef called musket cove. Just as we were entering through the reef pass, our gearbox failed… We attached our dinghy to the side of the boat to help drive us in through the last reef pass and get our anchor down safely. We are Kathrin and Daniel. We sail, cruise and live aboard our sailing yacht SV Polaris Helvetica, a 14m Bavaria Cruiser 46 from 2017. We left our native Switzerland and moved to the UK almost two decades ago. In 2021, in our mid 50-ies, after our three boys left the nest we made a big decision. We left the rat race in London behind and made our beloved sailboat our primary floating home. Over the years we have added a few things to Polaris. We got rid of the standard propane gas cooker and replaced it with an electric cooker and oven. We fitted a generator and changed to a lithium (LiFePo) house battery bank. We added a 1'200W solar arch and a water maker. With all these upgrades Polaris is now a comfortable live aboard yacht. We sail her along Britain's beautiful coastline and we live on her summer and winter. Kathrin loves cooking and baking on board. You will see some of her cookery wonders across our episodes. We completely fell in love with our new lifestyle although we had to make some tough decisions. We vacated our rented house in London and sold or gave away all our belongings that had no space on Polaris. What a very liberating feeling to be able to say that all we own is with us on our small sailing boat. There's nothing else to care about. We enjoy our new freedom. We explore new places, discover their history and we love making new friends along our way.

We pulled up our anchor chain with no anchor on it! Surprise! We dove for it (found it easily) and the missing bolt (could not find). Our boat dragged our second anchor almost the whole time, and we pumped clogged water from our anchor bay after washing it (Brooks’ pee area..) - all shortly after leaving our amazing two night getaway in honeymoon hbr. It’s safe to say we will be inspecting our anchors more often and we are very lucky this happened on a nice day. Sometimes I feel like we are in a science experiment of what can go wrong though 😂 Our GoPro got water damage, but here’s some phone clips and narrations haha!
