Moving Time! The process of packing up our old home (Schiehallion) and moving all that stuff to our new home (Trade Runner) is a big one. Accumulated stuff has to be sorted through, junk thrown away. Then everything needs to be transported over, all of by dinghy (in windy wet conditions) and then found a home for on the new boat. We wanted to leave the new owner of Schiehallion a good first step so we cleaned her from keel to deck as well. The new boat has much more space but finding a home for everything will take some time. After loosing his first challenge for the America's cup in 1870 James Ashbury had clearly gotten the America's cup bug and was was back for the 1871 Cup with his new yacht Livonia. Only 12 months after his last challenge it was quite a feet to prepare a new boat to challenge the might of the New York Yacht club. Ashbury was one of the first to try and use the dead of gift to his advantage preparing consecutive challenges from 12 yacht clubs on successive days with the view of claiming the cup if he took victory in any of the races. This ingenious plan would give him the greatest chance of winning the cup after making the long journey across the Atlantic from the UK. The New York yacht club did not allow the 12 race challenge, while Ashbury was not happy about this he did gain a considerable advantage over the 1870 challenge with the New York Yacht club instead agreeing to race for the America's Cup in a seven race series of match races which helps the challenger by not having to battle the entire fleet of boats from the New York Yacht Club. The New York Yacht club was so confident that they would win the 1871 America's Cup no new yachts were commissioned, instead they selected the four best yachts from the 1870 Cup fleet race, one defender would be selected to race against Livonia each day. This would make winning the 1871 cup challenging for Livonia as one of Columbia, Sappho, Dauntless and Palmer would be selected to match the conditions of the day, given the defender a decided advantage over the challenger. This America's cup would be like many to follow with protests and claims of cheating on multiple levels ensuring the debate over who won the cup continuing long after the last race was finished. Columbia and Sappho each won two races to claim the Cup, with Livonia winning the first ever race as a challenger. Ashbury and his crew sailed races 6 and 7 against no opposition as it was their view that the series was not over, claiming they had won race 2 after a protest against Columbia for the direction they rounded the outer turning mark. While Ashbury and his yacht Livonia failed to win the 1871 America's the were the first to take a race from the Americans and would have won the Cup if their protest was upheld. While it was small conciliation Ashbury record of winning on race was not be equaled until 1920. In this episode Bill begins work at the yard by dropping the rudder the rest of the way down, a continuation of last week's videos work. We've decided to have a whole new rudder made after discovering deep pitting on the stainless steel pipe. He needs to remove the bushing but to drop the rudder down requires use of winches and some good old fashioned digging. Once the rudder is fully dropped Bill takes the Sawzal to the shaft's hole and goes to work. Much grinding and hammering later it finally falls out. It was pretty stuck after 40 years! Next Bill begins to tackle our blister problem, delamination spots where moisture has imbued into the deepest layer of paint or barrier coat. Each spot, 71 in total need to be grinded out to reveal fresh fiberglass. Then they are set to dry. Next we give viewers a tour of our little apartment or casita where we'll be staying at night during our refit process. It's already piled with things we've removed from the boat to give us more space to work. The next project we work on is removing all the stuff on Calico's stern in preparation for a new arch system that we will be building. It takes a bit of muscle and finally we use our friend Demetrius's RV as a platform to remove the solar panel's which there's no other way to gain access to. It is exactly the same height as our boat on it's jack stands so Bill goes for a ride on top as D maneuvers it along side Calico Skies. Then together, the boys carefully lift it across the RV to the boat safely. After unpacking some goodies that Demetrious has brought down from the US we head to the canvas shop for a new dodger. We'll also need a new bimini because the arch system will have a different design than what we have currently. Then we're back to the yard to examine progress on the blisters and some are still weeping a residue meaning they must be ground out deeper. Sunbeam S22 Segelboot Baujahr 1974, Refit in 2018, entspanntes Segeln auf dem Rursee in der Eifel. Das Segeln auf dem Rursee ist in der Zeit von April bis November möglich, in der restlichen Zeit müssen alle Boote aus dem Wasser geholt werden. Der Wind auf dem See ist entgegen dem Wind auf dem Meer weniger konstant und beständig. Das macht das Segeln sehr anspruchsvoll und es kann sein, dass wir mir einem Halbwindkurs fahren und einen Moment später mit achterlichem Wind unterwegs sind. In dem Video sieht man nach der ersten Wende auch recht deutlich, wie der Wind plötzlich abflacht und die Segel an Profil verlieren. Für das Befahren des Sees benötigt man ab 5qm Segelfläche einen Segelschein (mindestens Binnen) und eine Plakette, die vor dem Befahren beim Rurseeverband erworben werden muss. Der Rursee ist ein langgezogener Stausee mit zwei Staumauern und einer ungefähren, befahrbaren Länge von 10km. Sailing the Hobie15 with a 86yr old, very experienced sailor. Location is the calabrian coast of the mediteranian sea, summer 2022. We have been to the Aldiana Calabria hotel for our holiday and there, you are able to sail catamaran for free in case you have a sailing license of the VDWS international. So we took a catamaran, went out on sea and enjoyed a ride with easy going but also hard sections. I was able to learn a lot and could furthermore experience my personal limit. We hit the 20kts mark a few times in a 5-6bft wind. My skipper just did not press the last juice out of the cat as we both decided beforehand not to do so... With the highly respectable age of 86, he did not want to get into the trapeze, so I did. Enjoy my other video solo sailing the Hobie 15 in lighter winds...

We make our way over to the Lofoten islands, northern Norway, to check out the disputable "most scenic view" in Norway. Then over to Henningsvaer to get some rock climbing in, before moving further north and finding what is probably the most beautiful anchorage we have ever been to.
