Welcome back aboard Moor R & R for this week's adventure – Episode 31! While the weather hasn't always been on our side, the beauty of this part of Australia never disappoints. This week, we drop anchor in the stunning Butterfly Bay, where nature puts on an incredible show. Massive schools of bait fish gather close to shore, attracting hungry sharks that put on an unforgettable feeding frenzy right before our eyes. It's one of those moments that reminds us just how wild and untouched these waters really are. Next, we make our way to Manta Bay, one of my absolute favourite places in the Whitsundays. The crystal-clear water, colourful coral gardens, and abundance of marine life make for some truly amazing snorkelling, and it's easy to see why this spot keeps calling us back. Our adventure then takes us out to the iconic Hook Reef, where we spend our days exploring beneath the surface and trying our luck with the fishing rods. After a run of disappointing catches, our luck finally changes in a big way, making for an exciting day aboard and a well-earned fresh seafood dinner! From breathtaking reef scenery and incredible marine life to peaceful anchorages and life aboard our floating home, this episode captures everything we love about sailing Australia's east coast. After some strong winds kept us tucked away near Cape Capricorn, we decided to make the most of it and explore Yellow Patch on Curtis Island – and wow, this place delivered. With just 0.4m under the keel on entry during a spring tide, we carefully eased ARGO into this secluded anchorage and found ourselves surrounded by towering golden sandhills and crystal-clear shallows. It was tight… very tight… but absolutely worth it. We grabbed the paddleboards and headed ashore to tackle the famous Yellow Patch sandhill. The climb was brutal (around a 40-degree angle!), but the sweeping views over the coastline made every step worth the leg burn. Back onboard, the falling tide had us keeping a very close eye on the depth under the keel. Using the paddleboard oar as our very scientific measuring device, we realised things were getting a little too shallow for comfort… so up came the anchor and forward we edged by a few metres to stay safe for the night. With that little drama sorted, it was time for a relaxed evening aboard – another fruitless fish from the deck satisfied with a few sundowners, and plans for tomorrow’s sail to Great Keppel Island. Sometimes the tricky spots turn out to be the most memorable. Thanks for watching. What looks like a simple coat of primer is actually the result of countless hours spent sanding, guide coating, filling low spots with fairing compound, and sanding all over again. While Matt focuses on the cabin top, I revisit our interior paint testing after being unhappy with the sheen level of our previous Alexseal Pegasus Gray samples. That means sanding off old test panels and trying once again to achieve the finish we're looking for before committing to larger areas of the boat. After completing our extensive catamaran refit, we spent some time tied up at a nearby dock fine-tuning our setup before finally heading out to put our new systems to the test at anchor. For long-distance sailors and on extended sea crossings, continuous weather analysis is an essential part of safe and efficient trip planning. Using my current transatlantic voyage as an example, I will explain and discuss in detail the process of weather navigation and weather routing. This involves assessing weather developments, analyzing route suggestions, and identifying critical areas and strong wind zones early on to exclude them from the route planning. The presentation provides practical insights into various strategies for avoiding severe weather and making the most of prevailing weather conditions. The analyses are based on the PredictWind routing and weather platform, as well as the globally recognized ECMWF and GFS weather models.
