We say goodbye to Guadeloupe and set sail for Dominica, but it definitely isn't the smooth Caribbean sail we were hoping for! The day starts with a bad feeling in my gut before we head out into a rough, lumpy sea for the crossing to Dominica. 🌧️⛵ It isn't our most comfortable passage, but eventually the dramatic green mountains of the Nature Island appear ahead. Checking into Dominica turns out to be surprisingly easy, and we're finally free to start exploring but the rain won't stop! Our first adventure takes us to a beautiful beach where we discover a shipwreck along the shore. Then we decide to try something different and jump aboard the local bus to explore farther… except things don't exactly go according to plan. 😂 That's cruising life — rough sails, unexpected discoveries and plans that seem to change by the hour! The rain just keeps coming… 🌧️ This week aboard Motherload, the skies are gray, the rain is relentless, and somehow we’re finding ways to turn the chaos into an adventure. Between going a little stir-crazy in the rain, hanging out with friends, creating our own fun, and trying to make the most of cloudy days, our pup Finch has a much bigger challenge to face—surgery. ❤️🐾 And while life feels a little slower right now, there’s a lot happening just beneath the surface. With a large area of high pressure and a zone of lighter winds approaching, it could be the perfect opportunity to close the gap to the boats ahead. Saint Helena had been pretty challenging when it came to fresh produce, so when we walked into the shops here, the shelves may have looked a little barren, but compared to our last island stop 15 days ago, this felt like a super store. Of course, arriving somewhere new by boat is never quite as simple as just dropping the anchor, there is whole bunch of unknowns and challenges to face. There's clearance to sort out, a completely new language to butcher, in this Portuguese, and the small problem that absolutely nobody understands what the hell we are saying. Add a rolly anchorage, tropical rain, and a few other little curveballs, and it's pretty easy for the excitement of arriving somewhere new to wear off pretty quickly. But then we met the port captain. He was friendly, incredibly helpful, and made the whole clearance process an absolute breeze. With a little help from Holafly and Google Translate, we were chatting away, laughing, and pretending we knew exactly what was going on. But first impressions? Yeah… we're going to like it here. It's loud, it's colourful, it's vibrant, and there's a whole lot going on. And when you can chuck your surfboard into the front seat of a taxi and search for waves, it gets my instant tick of approval Brazil, you've got our attention. We completed what’s known as the Swedish Death Cleanse by selling nearly everything we own, and moving aboard our salvaged, half-sunk 37-foot Prout Snowgoose Elite catamaran as our new full time home. We’ve permanently shed the mast and rigging to transform her into the first iteration of a 100% solar-electric liveaboard cruiser—ready to take on the 6,000-mile journey of America's Great Loop! In Season 2, Episode 6, Lezlie & Jason make it deep into the Chesapeake Bay as they continue their Great Loop adventure aboard their upcycled solar-electric cruiser. The Maryland state flag makes way for the Delaware as the achievements keep coming. A little side trip is taken to check Maryland off the Great American Golf Tour. Tough headwinds make crossing the Chesapeake one last time a choppy, unpleasant experience. Beautiful sunsets and moonrises become a regular thing. ► They embodied the golden age of ocean-racing multihulls in the 1990s and early 2000s. Fast, spectacular and particularly demanding, the ORMA 60 trimarans gradually disappeared from the major offshore races. Yet the 2026 Route du Rhum will bring several of them back into the spotlight in the Vintage Multi category. Among them is one of the most famous: Loïck Peyron’s former Fujicolor II, now Arkéa - Handicap International, which Damien Seguin will sail solo from Saint-Malo to Pointe-à-Pitre starting on November 1. ► Our senior reporter Brieuc Maisonneuve recently had the chance to sail aboard: “I had the chance to take part in the Nuit des Îles du Ponant aboard Damien Seguin’s ORMA Arkéa – Handicap International. A legendary trimaran, born in 1990 with Mike Birch, which subsequently enjoyed its glory years in the hands of Loïck Peyron, Jean-Luc Nélias and Bertrand de Broc. More than thirty-five years after she was launched, however, the adventure is far from over. Next November, she will return to the Atlantic and the 2026 Route du Rhum, sailed by another major figure in sailing: Damien Seguin.” ► From Mike Birch to Damien Seguin Designed by Nigel Irens and launched in March 1990 as Velvia de Fujichrome for Mike Birch, the trimaran entered the Route du Rhum that same year. She finished fourth, behind Florence Arthaud, Philippe Poupon and Laurent Bourgnon. Renamed Fujicolor II, she won the Trophée des Multicoques the following year before beginning a particularly successful period with Loïck Peyron. ► Peyron notably won the OSTAR aboard her in 1992 and again in 1996, as well as several Trophées des Multicoques and Courses de l’Europe. Fujicolor II also secured the ORMA titles in 1997 and 1998, with the latter season proving particularly impressive as the trimaran won every Grand Prix in the championship. ► This longevity naturally came with numerous developments. As early as 1992, the trimaran received a canting wing mast and her deck layout was simplified. Foils appeared on the floats the following year, while sail area increased. The bows of the floats were subsequently refined, the daggerboard lengthened and the rig continued to evolve. After being dismasted in 2002, the trimaran even received a mast from Francis Joyon’s former Eure-et-Loir - Lorenove. Having subsequently sailed under the colors of Belgacom, Banque Covefi, Academy and then Yasasin, among others, the trimaran returned to France at the end of 2025 for a complete refit at Éole Performance. The structure, electronics, energy and safety systems were upgraded, along with ergonomic adaptations for Damien Seguin and the integration of solutions using natural fibers. Relaunched in early May, she was officially christened Arkéa - Handicap International in Brest on June 23, with none other than Loïck Peyron as godfather, accompanied by Paralympic champion Marie-Amélie Le Fur. We joined the YOT 53 on her delivery run to Cannes, at sea, before the doors opened. This is the first real look at YOT's new power catamaran. The YOT 53 makes her European debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival, and we got aboard early. We ran her along the French Côte d'Azur, watched her come alongside the YOT 36 and YOT 41, and got a first look at the features YOT has built this boat around. From installation to docking, SMARTDOCK is proving just how simple remote vessel control can be. At the Perth Boat Show, PG caught up with Jed from One Brokerage, the first person in Perth to install the new SMARTDOCK remote control system, fitted to a Regulator 34. Despite opening the dash to what initially looked like a complicated installation, Jed found the system remarkably straightforward, with a plug-and-play connection that had SMARTDOCK integrated and ready to go with minimal fuss. The real test came on the water. In strong winds, Jed was able to manoeuvre and dock the boat directly from his phone, giving him the freedom to move around the vessel and position himself where he had the best visibility. And after bringing the Regulator into Elizabeth Quay earlier that day, his verdict was simple: “Super easy.” SMARTDOCK is designed to take some of the pressure out of close-quarters manoeuvring, giving you greater control, visibility and independence when docking.
