This was probably the worst lightning storm we have been in with at least 3 vertical strikes hitting the water close to the boat and continuous lightning all around. In less than a fortnight both the multihull classes had completed the extended race across the Atlantic. The Ultims had been down to the equator before heading back up to the finish in Martinique while the Ocean Fifties had turned west at Cape Verde. Two classes and on the face of it two different types of competition where one seemed to deliver a dominant walk in the park, the other a full on transatlantic fist fight with boats barely out of sight of each other. Yet behind the scenes both were intense, relentless races that took teams to the edge. In an event that is driven and dominated by the French, it's not often that the non-French speaking public get to hear what really goes through the minds of the world's best, seemingly fearless and accomplished offshore heroes. But in this episode we find out what made this race a tough one, get an insight into their world and discover what an emotional place it is. SV-true-love is a 1981 Gulfstar 39 Sailmaster. She is a heavily laid up boat and perfect for the conditions in the northeast Atlantic region. Her interior is comprised of teak, marine grade plywood and some laminates. But the overall build of this boat was made with top quality materials, no longer used in most production boats today. Only 57 of these boats were built due to the high cost. In 1981, these boats were considerably more expensive at $150k+, then was the average home price in the US at the time.

In this episode, we explore the evolving anchoring rules in several French Polynesian islands, specifically Fakarava, Tahiti, and Moorea. The local government has recently attempted to implement a system limiting both the number of boats and the designated anchoring zones. Perhaps they are trying to replicate Bora Bora's model, but they lack the established infrastructure that makes it work. Bora Bora is unique in French Polynesia as the only place where boats are required to use a paid mooring ball. The cost is $60 for one night, $40 per night for a multi-night stay, or a flat rate of $600 per month. A ranger collects fees daily and picks up garbage twice a week. Moorings are available in four areas: the Yacht Club, the SW corner, near Bloody Mary’s, and the SE corner. While there are two locations where you can anchor for up to 36 hours, they are in very deep or bommie-filled waters and do not offer easy access to the main town. Puis, direction la plage pour une partie de volley improvisée avec les locaux, un vrai moment de partage. Le lendemain, cap sur Saint-Vincent, au mouillage de Chateaubelair. Une courte traversée tranquille, pleine de nostalgie… avant de lever l’ancre à l’aube, direction Sainte-Lucie et notre première escale à Soufrière Bay. Et là, changement d’ambiance : mer formée, vent soutenu, bateau qui bouge dans tous les sens ! 🌬️⛵ On t’emmène dans les vagues, caméra embarquée.
