Ich baue die komplette Zahnstangen Lenkung meiner Amel Santorin 46 aus — und kämpfe dabei 4 Tage gegen eine einzige Schraube. Zahnstangen am Segelboot: Das Lenksystem, das kaputt geht bevor du's merkst — und das Steuerung und Autopilot gleichzeitig lahmlegt. Die Zähne sind direkt in die Steuerradachse eingefräst — sie treiben zwei Zahnstangen an, die über Bowdenzüge den Ruderquadranten im Achterschiff steuern. Zusätzlich sitzt ein Kettenrad auf der Achse, über das der Autopilot die Anlage antreibt. Wenn die Stangen an den immer gleichen Mittelzähnen brechen, ist beides gleichzeitig weg: Steuerung und Autopilot. Kein Backup auf See. Das wollte ich nicht erleben – also habe ich die Zahnstangen meiner Amel Santorin 46 präventiv ausgebaut und geprüft. Vier Tage hat mich dabei eine übersehene zweite Sperrschraube aufgehalten. Ich zeige den Geräusch-Check mit dem Schraubendreher als Hörgerät, den Moment wo ich kurz aufgegeben hatte, und was die Zahnstangen nach Jahren wirklich zu sagen hatten. Das Ergebnis hat mich selbst überrascht. Das Steuerrad dreht seitdem spürbar leichter. Wenn du gerne mitschraubst – abonniere den Kanal. This week we follow Ryan on one of his final marine projects — a custom-built fishing module for a Rodman 31. The brief was simple: create a practical, durable solution for serious fishing. The result is a bespoke unit incorporating a live well, sink with running water, and dedicated tackle storage — all designed to fit neatly within the boat’s existing layout, replacing a clever C-shaped settee that lifts clear of the outboards. We join the build from start to finish, from workshop fabrication through to final installation at Birdham Pool, with a look around the boatyard and some of the other projects Ryan has been involved in. We sailed from Spanish Wells to Great Abaco through Little Harbour Cut, and it turned into one of the best sailing days we had all season. The winds were light, but with our new Ullman Sails Code 0 we were able to sail the entire 50+ nautical mile passage without needing to motor. Without it, we likely would have been motor sailing or making 1–2 knots less speed the whole way. The sea state was incredible, the boat was perfectly balanced, and it ended up being one of those rare passages where everything just comes together. Sometimes the light wind days turn out to be the best sailing days. This was definitely one of them given our newest sail...otherwise we'd need to motor sail or we'd end up going 1-2kt slower. Oh no, it won’t switch. The weather is getting warmer and it is time to adjust the Dometic reverse cycle unit from heat to air conditioning, except it was stuck in heat mode. The unit is under all the bedding and cushions in the front cabin, not so easy to access. Once the defective unit was available, Steve checked the solenoid valve which allows the reversing valve to move. It appeared to be working. Next he tried to manually switch the reversing valve from heat to cool. It was a no go, so the heavy unit had to be pulled. Once on deck, we carefully slid the unit across a board to the dock and into a wagon. Loaded it in the car and drove it to a factory authorized Dometic dealer. Now, we wait...will the repair cost be worth saving the unit or will we have to buy a new one? Hopefully the decision will be made and we will have a unit installed before the weather gets warmer and we get hot and sweaty. Karen did some detail painting in the front sail locker using Interlux BilgeKote paint and Steve installed two poles for hanging our extra lines. That locker is now in ship shape condition and nicely organized. It’s great to have that DIY project completed. The area where the Dometic had lived looked a little dingy. While the bilge paint’s out it became the next project. Steve cleaned and sanded the bottom of the area. Karen came behind and painted. That space looks so much better now and it will look fantastic once there is a reverse cycle unit housed in there again. Isabella’s fenders are a variety of types. We decided to match them by removing a round fender and buying a cylindrical one that matched most of the others. Now the remaining fenders needed some sprucing up. On a warm and windy day, Karen used a magic sponge to clean the existing fenders so their white color would sparkle like new. At last, matching fenders to protect Isabella’s hull. In this video I show how to take a small engine that won't start and fix it. I found a broken pressure washer for free at the dump and demonstrate how to get it running. I discuss the Otto Cycle (Intake, Compression, Expansion, Exhaust), or Suck, Squeeze, Bang, Blow and how the fire triangle (Fuel, Oxygen, Ignition) relate to small engines. Fuel is the gasoline, Oxygen is compression, and Ignition is the spark. I show how to test each one of these requirements with multiple methods. I demonstrate checking compression by pull start and how to use a compression test gauge. I show how to test spark the old school way as well as with a commercial tester. Then, I show how to clean fuel lines, fuel pickups, and the carburetor. I also discuss small engine best care practices for storage. Like shutting off the fuel valve and letting the carb run dry. Finally, I show the pressure washer fully repaired and sell it for a $100 profit. We sail 4500 nm from Panama to Cape Horn (bypassing Easter Island due to unfavorable winds) on a 15 meter Bavaria. It is not an easy passage: two gales and a Force 10 storm greet us. We suffer a knock-down, and a wave throws me across the saloon causing a deep gash on the back of my head, and a back injury (recovered from both). I discuss the navigation challenge (rhumb line vs great circle), energy management, wx, in-mast furling and the use of a storm sail. My Captain, Peter Cullum is a 'racer' while I am a 'cruiser'. The cohabitation relationship survived the passage, which took 33 days.

We leave the Gulf of Aden behind, riding powerful following seas north along the coast of Oman—pushed hard by some of the strongest sustained winds we’ve faced yet. It should feel like a gift… but we’re not exactly in fighting shape. Our water maker failed back in Djibouti, so every drop is rationed. No showers. No margin. Then the inverter goes down—taking our stove and oven with it. No cooking. No hot meals. Just problem after problem stacking up at sea. We’re limping forward, carried by wind we can’t control, toward one of the most critical passages in the world—the Strait of Hormuz. This was filmed end of July to early August of 2024 before recent events of 2026 made this passage much more dangerous. Somewhere along the way, we catch what might be our last fish… a wahoo. A small win in a stretch that keeps testing us. This is what it looks like when the journey doesn’t get easier… you just get closer. On se laisse porter par l’ambiance, entre rythmes entraînants et découvertes culinaires. Je fais un détour stratégique par l’usine de gaz pour faire remplir mes bouteilles. Une mission simple… en théorie. Car ici, se faire comprendre relève parfois de l’aventure quand on ne parle pas la langue. Gestes, sourires, quelques mots improvisés on finit toujours par y arriver. Le Cap-Vert a cette énergie unique, brute et chaleureuse, qui vous attrape sans prévenir. Pendant ce temps, les filles préparent leurs sacs à dos. Leur prochaine étape les appelle déjà : elles quittent le bateau, direction l’Amérique centrale. Une nouvelle aventure commence pour elles. De mon côté, je me rends à l’immigration pour régler la question du visa. Bonne surprise : ici, on peut rester jusqu’à trois mois sans formalités. This one tested us 😅 We took on the steep and slippery climb up Isabel de Torres in Puerto Plata—and it was no joke. Muddy trails, sketchy footing, and a serious leg burn… but the view at the top made every step worth it. Sitting above the city with a mini botanical garden and that iconic statue, it’s one of the most rewarding hikes we’ve done in the Dominican Republic. We made it down just before sunset and headed into historic downtown Puerto Plata for dinner, soaking in the colorful streets as well as umbrellas and local vibes. Back in Luperón, the adventure didn’t stop. We explored Playa Chiquita with unique wooden sculptures, and hiked out to a hidden blowhole and coastal cliffs—one of those wild, off-the-beaten-path spots we love. Then it was time to check out of Luperón… and get ready for what’s next.
