This is a design overview and specifications breakdown of a custom, versatile tandem-axle trailer for transporting your own fixed-keel sailboat in the 26 to 32-foot range (such as the Pearson Triton, Alberg 30, or Cape Dory). Rather than a fabrication or welding tutorial, this video focuses on the structural dimensions, design logic, and the telescoping riser support system that allows a single trailer to safely match and adjust to different hull contours. The info in this video will assist you in ordering a similar trailer with correct specifications or can be a starting guide for building your own trailer. Below are the general specs for the trailer: 1. Lift-off type, tandem 7,000lb drop axles, both with electric brakes. 2. 14,000 GVWR construction, 7" channel, 2 5/16" ball. (You might notice the tag on the trailer states 12,500 lbs. We derated it so as not exceed the weight I’ll be using with my Class 5 ball-type hitch, and to stay within private-use registration tiers. Consider it a built-in safety factor.) 3. 7,000lb fixed tongue jack welded to frame (not the lighter swivel type). 4. Extendable nesting hull support channels and screwpads on threaded rods with 6 side supports placed outboard as far as possible (see sketch): Single bow center riser 26" long overall, 74 degrees. V screwpad at bow on sliding base held by U-bolts with extending riser channel. Two forward side supports risers 28" overall, 82 degrees. Two center side risers 28" overall, 90 degrees. Two aft side support risers 34" overall, 82 degrees. 5. Main 7” U-channel frames to continue forward within 8” of tongue for best support. 6. ST235/80R16 Range E tires or equivalent with spare tire. 7. Primer and black paint. 8. All galvanized fasteners. 9. LED lights. 10. Treated wood for screw pads and bed. I’ve included a sketch in the video to give you a clear sense of the dimensions and layout. After 13 months away from sailing, stepping back into boat life has been a lot more intense than expected. In the last episode, we shared our return to YouTube after selling our Beneteau Oceanis 43 and buying an older boat in hopes of building a more sustainable future on the water. But the reality of getting everything ready has been stressful from the very beginning. With only a short timeline to get the boat ready for the water, James has been dealing with problem after problem almost entirely on his own — trying to work through a long list of jobs, unexpected issues, and the pressure of getting everything ready in time. But almost immediately, things take a turn. Out of nowhere, a squall rolls through and hits us hard. Winds spike to 40 knots, catching us completely off guard… and within moments, disaster strikes. Our sail tears almost from top to bottom. Just like that, our crossing is over before it even begins. We’re forced to turn around and head back, dealing with the damage and figuring out how to repair a shredded sail well enough to try again. It’s frustrating, it’s exhausting, but this is all part of life offshore. After years of waiting, delays, factory visits, road transport, crane lifts, final checks, and a whole lot of stress… my new Island Spirit 525e catamaran is finally going in the water! This is one of the biggest moments of the entire build. Launching a brand-new yacht is exciting, but it is also extremely nerve-wracking. One wrong move with the travel lift, straps, rudders, keels, or hull could cause major damage before the boat even gets a chance to sail. In this episode, we watch the final preparations, lift the boat, move her into position, and finally launch her for the first time. But just as everything is happening, we have to stop the process quickly when one of the lift straps gets caught near the rudder. This morning started with battle ropes, isometric training using the Iso Bow and Bullworker, and then a planned bike ride… until I got a puncture at the end of the pontoon. No excuses. I pushed the bike back, changed into my Hoka Bondi 9 running shoes and headed out for a walk instead. But something amazing happened… 5 minutes into the walk my energy came back, my knee felt better, and I ended up running continuously for 23 minutes! After struggling badly yesterday, I think I may simply have been depleted of carbs, so last night I fuelled properly with jacket potatoes and chicken breast — and today felt like a complete turnaround. 😱 L'IMPENSABLE : De l'eau dans le moteur ! Tout allait pourtant parfaitement bien... Après plusieurs mois de stockage, le moteur de Vagabond avait redémarré au quart de tour. Vive Yanmar ! Nous étions en plein préparatifs : améliorations, rangement, entretien et réfection des ombrières de la timonerie. Mais quand Tom a décidé de faire l’entretien de routine, le rêve a basculé. Au moment de démarrer : le moteur est bloqué. Le diagnostic tombe et il est terrifiant : le moteur est rempli d'eau. Comment est-ce possible ? D’où vient cette infiltration ? Quels sont les dégâts réels sur les pistons et les cylindres ? En quelques minutes, nous sommes passés de l’enthousiasme à la stupeur. C'est officiellement notre pire moment depuis que nous avons notre "nouveau Vagabond". J'ai franchement cru que notre voyage s'arrêtait là parce que nous n'avons pas le budget pour de gros frais extraordinaires comme un remplacement du moteur...
