The San Blas Islands are one of the most beautiful places we have ever sailed. They are also one of the most technically demanding. Over 100 kilometres of coral reef protects this archipelago — and that same reef has ended a lot of sailing dreams. After 28 hours of open Caribbean, we arrived in Guna Yala. This video is two things: how you actually get a 6-foot-draft boat safely inside a reef system where your chart plotter can be out by 50 metres, and the story of the people who live here — a culture that outlasted the Spanish, took on the Panamanian state in 1925, and won. We came in on high sun with the autopilot off, Maddy on the bow reading the water, and proven waypoints from cruisers who had been here before us. That is not being over-cautious. This week we’re chasing swell through some of the most remote islands in Indonesia. 🌊⛵ With the waves still pumping, Jesse somehow manages to damage his board… which isn’t exactly ideal when you’re hundreds of miles from the nearest surf shop. Luckily, we remember there’s a nearby surf resort with a few boards and decide to see if we can find him a replacement before the swell disappears. With a new board under his feet, we squeeze in one final session before heading back out to sea for an overnight passage up the coast, chasing the swell to our next surf spot. Along the way we cross the equator, hook a tuna as the sun goes down, and prepare Stella for more than 30 hours at sea. In this episode, we explore the ancient ruins of Suakin's White City before heading into the modern town to stock up on provisions. We drive through the streets and get a confronting glimpse of everyday life in one of the world's poorest countries stopping at the tiny supermarket and the fresh produce markets. Só tem um problema: eu já atravessei o gelo. Agora eu preciso voltar, e atravessar o cinturão de gelo de novo para não ficar encurralada. O vento virou e amoontou os pedaços. Não há abrigo, e não sei como farei para dormir se sempre haverá gelo ao redor. Estou sem chão. O caminho adiante estava livre, o retorno é um campo minado. Tenho uma vontade instantânea de me atirar no mar, mas 2 segundos depois concluo que não farei isso pois a água é muito fria e eu não gostaria de virar comida de urso e gaivota. There’s just one problem: I’ve already crossed the ice. Now I need to turn back and cross the ice belt again so I don’t get trapped. The wind has shifted and piled up the ice floes. There’s no shelter, and I don’t know how I’ll manage to sleep with ice all around me. I’m at a loss. The path ahead was clear; the return trip is a minefield. I have an instant urge to throw myself into the sea, but two seconds later I realize I won’t do that because the water is too cold and I wouldn’t want to end up as food for bears and seagulls. My only option is to find a way out.

There are some things you expect to find while diving the anchor. A sea floor covered in pulsing jellyfish brains isn't one of them. We’re at Sand Dollar Beach, where I make a creepy discovery while diving the anchor in murkier than usual water. Upside-down jellyfish called Cassiopea are anchored to the sea floor, pulsing away and looking disturbingly like jellyfish brains. We pull the broken port saildrive shifter cable so we can measure it for replacement, take a break at stunning Sand Dollar Beach and paddleboard along the shoreline. Dave also repairs a sabotaged swing on the beach. A run to Browns Marine takes us through crazy shallow water and a twisted route in search of boat parts, oil, coolant and rope. BARCOLANA 2026 – wir sind dabei! ⛵🇮🇹 Am 11. Oktober 2026 wollen wir mit der Scirocco bei der Barcolana in Triest an den Start gehen. Tausende Segelboote, ein riesiges Starterfeld und mittendrin unsere Crew. Bevor es so weit ist, müssen wir aber trainieren. In diesem Video kommt ein Teil unserer Barcolana-Crew zum ersten gemeinsamen Training an Bord. Wir besprechen die Aufgaben, testen die Abläufe und trainieren die Manöver, die beim Rennen funktionieren müssen. Außerdem hat die Crew gleich etwas für die Scirocco mitgebracht: Zwei neue Dyneema-Schoten mit jeweils 28 Metern Länge. Damit wollen wir unser Leichtwindsegel besser kontrollieren und für die Barcolana weiter optimieren. Wie gut funktioniert unsere Mannschaft bereits zusammen? Wer übernimmt welche Position? Und was müssen wir bis zur Barcolana noch verbessern? Bis Oktober wartet jedenfalls noch einiges an Arbeit auf uns. 😅 Eine weitere Verstärkung für die Crew gibt es ebenfalls. Ein zweiter Christoph wird uns unterstützen. Er ist erst vor Kurzem von seiner 35-monatigen Weltumsegelung zurückgekehrt, kennt die Scirocco bereits und hat mir auch beim richtigen Trimm des Gennakers geholfen. Am Freitag, den 9. Oktober, geht es dann von Pula Richtung Triest. Und am Sonntag wird es ernst. Sailing French Polynesia 2026 ⛵️ There’s something slightly ridiculous about sailing… You can travel thousands of miles to French Polynesia, drop your anchor in some of the most beautiful water on earth — and then spend the afternoon wondering whether the bloody thing is still holding! In this episode of Barefoot Doctors Sailing, our good friends Scott and Vanessa join us from Australia for a couple of weeks of sailing through paradise. But when the wind picks up and we leave our Nautitech 40 catamaran at anchor while exploring ashore, that familiar sailor’s question starts playing in the back of our minds: Is the boat still there? ⚓ ANCHOR WATCH & BOAT SAFETY We take a closer look at how modern GPS anchor alarm systems work — creating a safe zone around your anchored boat and alerting you if the boat moves outside that zone. Even more importantly, we show how technology can allow you to monitor your boat from shore on your mobile phone, using onboard connectivity such as Starlink. For cruisers, this can be a huge reassurance — especially when you’re anchored in an unfamiliar location and have gone ashore. And then there’s the ultimate test… We retrieve the anchor. Let’s just say it came up looking very ugly — but very firmly attached to the bottom! 😂 🫶 ANCHORS ARE LIKE FRIENDS There’s another theme running through this episode. We started thinking about how anchors are a little bit like friends. You don’t really know how good an anchor is until the conditions get rough. And perhaps friendships are the same. I had heard a lot about the Philippines. Beautiful islands. Friendly people. A lower cost of living. A place where maybe—just maybe—I could imagine starting over. So in 2025, I decided to stop wondering and take a quick flight over to see it for myself. But there were some big questions. Could I actually work from the Philippines? Could I build a life there? And even if I liked it, I couldn’t stay very long. Back home, my father was depending on me. So this wasn’t a move. It wasn’t even really a plan yet. It was simply a first look at another possibility. We’re finally setting sail on our new floating home—and our very first fish aboard is a beautiful mahi-mahi! 🎣⛵️ After six exhausting days of moving aboard, organizing, provisioning, and preparing our Leopard 50 catamaran, it’s finally time to leave the dock and begin our next chapter as a full-time sailing family. But before we can head out to sea, we still have a few last-minute boat projects to tackle. We rescue our Starlink from a pile of trash, shop for fishing gear, discover our water pump isn’t working, send Kamden to the top of the mast to retrieve a stuck halyard, practice tying lines, and spend an eye-watering $1,255 on our first fuel-up. Boat life is officially back! We take our new sailboat through the incredible canals of Fort Lauderdale, cruise past some of the most beautiful waterfront homes in Florida, and return to Lake Sylvia—the anchorage where so many things went wrong during our first sailing adventure four years ago. This time, we’re determined to replace those memories with better ones. After swimming, exploring the boardwalk, enjoying live music, and completing our signature Satterlee family pull-up challenge, we wake up for the moment we’ve been waiting for: our first real sail aboard our new catamaran. Of course, it wouldn’t be a true shakedown sail without a few problems. The autopilot stops working, the wind builds to 22 knots, and our trip from Fort Lauderdale to Key Biscayne becomes a long beat directly into the wind. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you.
