We are now living aboard our Rival 38 Centre Cockpit full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. Two ongoing jobs are preparing for our electric motor installation and creating a cockpit enclosure for our wheelhouse. We have a frequently updated blog at https://sustainablesailing.net with membership options and a weekly newsletter at £2 per month for Early Bird Supporters. Our free Sustainable Sailing book is at: https://sustainablesailing.codeberg.page/ Or visit our shop at https://sustainablesailing.teemill.com/ for great hoodies, t-shirts and bags. When we bought Vida in August 2019 she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all-electric (motor, cooking etc). If you have ever crawled into a cramped engine room with a flashlight in your teeth, you know why access matters. Skipper Large Powerboat Course - https://www.nauticed.org/powerboating-courses/view/skipper-large-powerboat?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=jeBCCli7Q8I New England Propeller - https://neprop.com Do NOT use bottom paint on your propeller. Most bottom paints contain metals that react with prop metals and accelerate corrosion/electrolysis. In this practical guide, we explain what to use (and what to avoid), how marina electrical currents vs mooring/trailering affect corrosion risk, and why your zincs must stay bare (no coating on the zincs or on the shaft where they clamp). What you’ll learn - Why bottom paint is wrong for props: metal-on-metal reactions → corrosion - Coatings vs nothing: when growth pressure is high, prop-specific coatings (e.g., PropSpeed and similar) can help—results vary by harbor and maintenance - Electrolysis basics: marina currents increase risk; mooring/trailering reduce exposure - Zincs matter: never coat anodes or the metal-to-metal contact area on the shaft - Cost reality: coatings can be pricey; some boaters re-coat and still haul quickly if growth returns 00:00 - Don’t Use Bottom Paint 00:12 - Why Props Corrode 00:43 - Don’t Coat Your Zincs 00:55 - Should You Coat a Prop? 01:21 - Prop Speed vs Bottom Paint 01:41 - Costly Re-Coating Problem #powerboat #propeller #boating

Most people compare catamarans and monohulls by one number. That’s the mistake. This video isn’t about sticker price. It’s about the costs that show up after you buy the boat. Quietly. Gradually. Often, without you noticing. Two boats can cost the same upfront and feel completely different to live on one year later. The difference has less to do with hull count and more to do with how the boat interacts with marinas, anchorages, maintenance, and daily life. Dockage. Anchoring. Wear and tear. Comfort. Fuel. Lifestyle choices you won’t see in listings or quick comparisons. If you’re deciding between a catamaran and a monohull, or you’ve started boat shopping and something about the “cats are expensive” argument doesn’t sit right, this will change how you think about cost. Watch before you budget for the wrong thing. Hashtags #sailing #liveaboard #catamaran #monohull #boatlife #sailboatlife #cruising #anchoring #boatbuying #liveaboardsailing #sailingyoutube

This episode covers my 8th outing in the new-to-me 1987 Precision 16 sailing dinghy I purchased locally for $800. This time I return to Lake Pueblo, Colorado after a 5 year hiatus. Lake Pueblo is a Colorado state park along the Arkansas River just outside the city of Pueblo, Colorado. The park features swim beaches, two marinas, two modern boat ramps, ample trailer parking and nice picnic areas. The marinas offer boat and jet ski rentals and the lake gets very busy during the summer. But on a nice 67F day in December...there was hardly anyone on the lake. The Precision 16 is a lightweight Stephen Seaton-designed un-ballasted centerboard sailing dinghy with a planing hull manufactured from 1982 until the mid 90s. It was superseded in 1995 by the smaller Jim Taylor-designed Precision 15 (P-15CB and P-15K). Subscribe and follow @ColoradoSailing on YouTube for more original sailing videos, gear, boat maintenance, sailing tips and travel content as I sail my Precision 18 trailer sailer and Precision 16 sailing dinghy in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and South Dakota. #sailing #sailingdinghy #coloradosailing #mountainsailing #AuroraReservoir #sailingvideo

Engine room, diesel exhaust, exhaust riser, stockings, enchiladas and a hot sauce comparison A few loose screws and some muscle power. We’re still trying to solve the engine exhaust leak. This time Karen joins Steve in the engine room to loosen a few screws and Steve uses his muscle power to remove the riser. Still not sure how to reconnect the riser to the flange to seal the leak. Some projects are just not as easy as anticipated and this one is a prime example of extended DIY. Karen dances in her new holiday outfit of a festive skirt and red furry Christmas stockings. They’re just the kind that Steve would like to stuff. Of course she has a red furry hat to match the swinging stockings. Culinary delights on Isabella in this episode are our homemade enchiladas. Ground grass fed beef with secret seasonings, yep, right out of the store bought package. Oops, spoiler alert. Lightly fried flour tortillas filled with the meat mixture, cheese and some sauce, rolled up and put in a pan. They are then covered with more sauce, yep another secret ingredient, topped with cheese and baked in the oven until done. Yummy. Then things got really hot. Loving spicy stuff we followed our meal with a hot sauce comparison. Watch the video to see how hot and spicy we can get. We’re so grateful for our subscribers! Huge hugs and kisses to y’all. I hope to see everyone in the upcoming John Kretschmer's Captain's Hour! Here is the info from his email about the zoom meeting. "The last Captain’s Hour of 2025 is this Tuesday, December 30 at 1900 EST. It’s going to be an interesting one as we discuss the many refits, modifications and serious gear choices we’ve made in nearly a quarter century of sailing. I will discuss the good decisions, and the not so good decisions I’ve made, and gear that’s worked well, and some that hasn’t. I will also describe the current refit taking place right now as we prepare for another busy season. When we reached Opua New Zealand last October, we completed our 200th training passage. I finally put numbers to paper, doing my best to figure out how many miles Quetzal and I have sailed together and it’s a bit crazy. My best guess is that it’s somewhere between 220,000 - 240,000 nm, a lot of miles and a hell of a test laboratory. When I think back to our first passage to Bermuda in May 2003 and compare that boat to the one that sailed into Opua, I am reminded of the fable of Theseus' ship, or sometimes called Theseus paradox. Theseus was the mythical kind of Athens who saved the city by slaying the Minotaur and escaped to Delos on a ship. The ship, or at least a version of it, was ceremonially sailed from Athens to Delos once a year but like all boats, needed constant maintenance. After many years, Aristotle was reputed to have asked, “is it still Theseus’ ship if it has all new wood and fittings?” Well, I am here to tell you that Quetzal may have a relaminated hull, a hard dodger, a furling staysail, new engine, and no teak decks but she is the same Quetzal, still soaring across the oceans of the world in style and escorting those of us luckily enough to sail her to a magical place. We’re finally heading back to Jupiter after 8 months away. 🚚⚓ The truck is packed to the brim with tools, spare parts, and long-planned upgrades as we cross the border and return to the boatyard in Mexico. Customs, early mornings, and a whole lot of coffee later we’re back on a mission. In this episode, we unload months of collected gear and dive into some major upgrades: new Victron electronics, solar controllers, panels, heavy-duty power leads, and a brand-new AC TIG welder for aluminum repairs. From corrosion pits and rudder repairs to future cockpit projects and watermaker fittings, this welder is about to earn its keep. We also tackle one of our biggest past problems shore power and finally test whether we can run the compressor properly for sandblasting and painting. This is a huge step toward getting Jupiter finished, back in the water, and ready for our ultimate goal: sailing to Spain. Thanks for coming along. This is where the real work begins. ⚓ Life on Jupiter 🔧 Boat refit • Sailing dreams • DIY projects #LifeOnJupiter #SailboatRefit #BoatYardLife #VictronEnergy #TIGWelding #SailingToSpain #BoatProjects If you get value from our videos whether entertainment. education or inspiration show your appreciation by supporting our channel. ▶️Visit Our Website: https://www.sailinglifeonjupiter.com ▶️ SUPPORT US HERE 👇: JOIN our “PRIME” crew on PATREON for early video releases, NO ADDS, weekly video REALTIME updates, private facebook group, video calls , “FREE CONSULTING” and even come sailing with us!!! ▶️Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/LifeonJupiter ▶️Support us on Paypal: https://www.paypal.me/SJRohan ▶️Just buy us a coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/lifeonjupiter ▶️Amazon storefront: https://amzn.to/3xv7STq As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. ------- ▶️Please Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/@SailingLifeonJupiter ------- ▶️Save money. Today we’re doing sailboat engine maintenance and a full sailboat engine service while searching for engine parts in a foreign country. Servicing a marine diesel engine is an essential part of boat maintenance, especially when you’re living aboard and preparing for long motoring days ahead. We’re currently liveaboard on our sailboat in Malaysia, tackling DIY sailboat maintenance while cruising Southeast Asia. From chasing down hard-to-find engine parts to performing a diesel engine service, this episode shows what real sailboat engine maintenance abroad looks like — tight spaces, oily hands, and all. In this episode of real sailboat life, we: – Search for engine parts while traveling abroad – Perform routine sailboat engine maintenance – Service our marine diesel engine – Complete an oil change and filter replacement – Replace an engine belt – Work through multiple boat maintenance projects – Install new hardware onboard – Fix a slipping halyard clutch critical for sailing safety – Dive under the boat to inspect the propeller Living a liveaboard sailboat life means constantly learning how to handle sailboat engine repair, engine service, and unexpected boat projects. DIY sailboat maintenance is not always easy, especially when you’re doing boat maintenance abroad, but keeping your sailboat engine reliable is key to safe cruising. As a couple sailing full time, this is part of how we prepare our cruising sailboat for the next leg of our journey through Southeast Asia and beyond. From sailing in Malaysia to preparing for offshore passages, every bit of engine maintenance helps keep us moving. As part of our ongoing DIY refit, we’re sharing what’s working, what’s not, and how we’re getting her ready for mediterranean sailing again. if you're into liveaboard life, sailing with dogs, family cruising or remote working while exploring by boat — you’ll feel right at home here. Thanks for watching! The sea calls to those who listen. It speaks of freedom, adventure, and the unknown. We are Daria, Chris, and Jasper - we sail with two golden retrievers, Hachi and Luna. We recently lost our Bernese Mountain Dog, Mimsy. (RIP 09.02.2025). Our floating home, Ragdoll, has taken us on an incredible journey across the Atlantic coast, from the west coasts of Scotland to the sun-drenched waters of the Mediterranean. For two years, we lived aboard a 47ft monohull. Now, we’ve started on a new adventure aboard our 2008 Fountaine Pajot Orana 44, embracing the beauty, chaos, and unpredictability of life at sea. Full-time work, homeschooling, storms, sunsets—this is our reality. No script. No certainty. Just wind, waves, and the endless blue. After 18 months (and counting) of refit life, this episode is all about the projects that keep us moving forward while we wait on weather windows and delayed parts. Big milestones don’t always happen on schedule, but there’s always something that needs doing on a boat. In this video, we tackle a series of essential “in-between” projects that bring our sailboat closer to being fully functional again: ⚓ Remounting the davits — getting them back in place after earlier refit work. 💧 Installing a new freshwater pressure pump — using a shallow well pump instead of a typical yacht pump for improved performance and reliability. ⚡ Starting the AC wiring in one hull — laying the groundwork for onboard power systems. 🚿 Replacing the shower sump boxes — upgrading to smart drains and dedicated pumps for a simpler, more reliable solution. 🍽️ Reinstalling the galley cabinets — a big psychological win that means the galley is now fully plumbed and wired again. These are the kinds of jobs that don’t always make headlines, but they’re what turn a stripped-out boat back into a livable, functional home. After a year and a half of refitting, moments like these remind us that progress is still happening — even when the big projects are temporarily stalled. If you enjoy real-world sailboat refits, practical system upgrades, and the honest pace of DIY boat work, this episode is for you. ⛵ In This Episode: Davit reinstallation Freshwater system upgrade AC electrical system prep Shower drain and pump upgrade Galley reinstallation and systems completion 00:00 Original song slideshow 01:08 Intro 01:49 Channel intro 02:06 Install fresh water pressure pumps 05:55 Install shower drains 09:19 Re-hang davits 12:36 Reinstall galley cabinets 15:36 Start AC wiring 19:54 Coming up next week 20:17 Like, subscribe, and leave and emoji 20:37 Original song reprise 20:51 End card #SailingLife #BoatRefit #SailboatMaintenance #CruisingLife #Rigging #MastWork #DIYBoatProjects #SailingCouple #SailboatRestoration #LiveaboardLife ----------------------------------------------------------- #SailingLife #BoatRefit #SailboatMaintenance #CruisingLife #Rigging #MastWork #DIYBoatProjects #SailingCouple #SailboatRestoration #LiveaboardLife © Sailing Roam 2025

Reading the Telltales on Your Sails: https://www.practical-sailor.com/sails-rigging-deckgear/reading-the-telltales-on-your-sails You’re trimming your mainsail WRONG. Today we break down the most common mainsail trim mistakes sailors make — and then I’ll show you the exact step-by-step sail trim procedure that will make your boat faster, safer, and way more comfortable. Whether you’re racing, cruising, learning to sail, or living aboard, proper mainsail trim is one of the most important skills you can develop. This video covers mainsail twist, outhaul tension, traveler positioning, backstay and mast bend, luff tension, draft control, leech tension, and how to use the vang correctly. We also talk about heel angle, weather helm, and why your sailboat feels out of balance when the trim is wrong. If your boat heels too much… If your helm feels heavy… If you can’t point high… If your speed is disappointing… This video will FIX all of it. ⚓ MAINSAIL TRIM REFERENCE PACK (All Sources Mentioned) These are the guides, PDFs, and videos I recommend if you want to go deeper: • Quantum Sails – Mainsail Trim Guide (PDF) https://www.quantumsails.com/getattachment/Resources-and-Expertise/Articles/Downloadable-Sail-Trim-Guides/QuantumSails_TrimGuide_Mainsail.pdf.aspx • Speed & Smarts – “Mainsail Trim” https://www.speedandsmarts.com/toolbox/articles2/the-fast-course/mainsail-trim • Sail Magazine – “Mainsail Trim 101” https://www.sailmagazine.com/diy/mainsail-trim-101/ • NauticEd – “How to Trim the Mainsail — Traveler or Mainsheet?” https://sailing-blog.nauticed.org/how-to-trim-the-mainsail-traveler-or-mainsheet/ • Yachting News – “Mainsail Trimming: 4 Steps to Keep It in Shape” https://www.yachtingnews.com/mainsail-trimming/ • All At Sea Caribbean – “Guide to Sail Control: Mainsail Trim” https://www.allatsea.net/guide-to-sail-control-part-ii-mainsail-trim/ • North Sails / RSYS – Mainsail Trim Webinar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-W9fA7Vgro • Sail Trim Masterclass https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWRI8MJ67WY • “3 Ways To Sail Faster — Mainsail Trim Techniques” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClMisGS9WJg Practical Sailor is your trusted resource for reviews of sailboats and sailing gear. https://www.practical-sailor.com Chat with us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/PracticalSailor/

Our sail from Bermuda to St. Martin was a LONG 6 days. Avoiding squalls, we chose the departure day knowing we would have some doldrums, but this was worst then we thought it would be.

While the snow plows are clearing the streets outside, we’re inside focused on packing for our upcoming sailing trip to Grenada! In this video, we’re walking through three essential pieces of our pre-trip gear prep: Part 1: The Soft Shackle. Watch a length of Dyneema transform into a high-strength soft shackle. The diamond knot makes it work. Part 2: Clear Vision (ASMR). A little mask maintenance goes a long way. Kent is cleaning up the goggles and adding a protector sleeve to the strap so he doesn’t lose his hair to the silicone strap 😉 Part 3: The Cuban Yo-Yo. We’re going old-school with a Cuban Yo-Yo setup for trolling behind the boat. Kent will show you how he rigs it with soft shackles and bungees to make sure he’s ready for the big catch. Chapters Part 1: The Soft Shackle & The Diamond Knot Part 2: Goggle Maintenance (ASMR) Part 3: Rigging the Cuban Yo-Yo for Fishing The Next Step: Packing it all up! #sailing #SailingPrep #DIYBoatWork #CubanYoYo #SoftShackles #BoatLife #ASMR #Dyneema

We are about to spend Christmas living on our boat. It is nearly 5 months since we moved on full-time so how much have we managed to get done? Our goal is still to launch our 1977 Rival 38 Centre Cockpit Ketch as a fully electric yacht. We have overhauled our blog at https://sustainablesailing.net with membership options and a weekly newsletter at £2 per month for Early Bird Supporters. Our free Sustainable Sailing book is at: https://sustainablesailing.codeberg.page/ Or visit our shop at https://sustainablesailing.teemill.com/ for great hoodies, t-shirts and bags. We have been refitting a 1977 Rival 38 for a Sustainable Sailing retirement, that has just started :-) When we bought Vida in August 2019 she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all-electric (motor, cooking etc). This episode covers my 8th outing in the new-to-me 1987 Precision 16 sailing dinghy I purchased locally for $800. This time I return to beautiful Aurora Reservoir in Aurora, Colorado on another unusually warm mid-November day. Aurora Reservoir is a city park in the City of Aurora, CO. The park features a sandy swim beach, modern 3 lane boat ramp, clean restroom facilities and nice picnic areas. The reservoir permits electric motor and hand-powered watercraft only...no gas outboards permitted. The reservoir is open to boating until 1 December.

Well, we finally leave the boatyard. I'll leave the rest to you. Join us as we navigate life on the water, one adventure at a time. 💙 Enjoy our content? Don’t be a stranger! Subscribe, hit that like button, and ring the bell so you never miss an episode. Your support means the world to us, and we love hearing from you in the comments! 🐾 Who are we? We’re a family of three with two adventure-loving dogs. Sailing with pets isn’t always easy, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. We started our journey exploring the remote and breathtaking Scottish isles before setting course for the Mediterranean in 2023. With no fixed route, we go where the wind and life take us. ⛵ Ragdoll is now a 2008 Fountaine Pajot Orana 44, a catamaran that gives us more space, comfort, and stability as we continue our life at sea. #yelken #teknedeyaşam #macera #gezi #panama #bakımonarım #teknebakımı ———————————————————————————- Follow us on Instagram /basak mireli To see where we are https://share.garmin.c... Sealing the Diesel, Black Water, and Gray Water tanks in both hulls was a monumental task not to mention a pain in the back! Winter haul-out means it’s time to tackle all the important jobs! ❄️⛵ In this video, we take on a full list of winter boat maintenance tasks, including antifouling, prop and saildrive work, window resealing, and more fibreglass repairs around the boat. We cover: ✅ Antifoul preparation and application ✅ Cleaning and servicing the propeller ✅ Saildrive maintenance and corrosion checks ✅ Additional fibreglass repair work during haul-out These are essential off-season jobs that help prevent corrosion, leaks, and costly repairs later on. Whether you’re a cruiser, liveaboard, or weekend sailor, this video shows what real winter boat maintenance looks like and what’s worth doing while the boat is out of the water.
