Sam is finally HOME… and it feels so good to have our crew back together again 🤍 After weeks away working offshore, we’re making the most of our time together back in Gladstone. This week, we join our good mate James for a sea trial on his uncle’s newly purchased boat — putting her through her paces and seeing how she performs out on the water. Then the next day turns into something pretty special… We head off on a spontaneous tiki tour around Gladstone with friends from MV Nelson Star. Living on a boat means we can move our home and travel, and one of the most incredible parts of this lifestyle is the friendships we build and the adventures we share. Hi and welcome aboard @SailingAstridTheWombat We are Gav and Shezz and two and a half years ago we bought our Beneteau Oceanis 430 sailboat with absolutely no sailing experience and jumped straight into the deep end of liveaboard sailing. Our very first passage was just over 700 nautical miles, launching us headfirst into the world of bluewater cruising, learning to sail, and real life at sea. Since that moment, we’ve been fully immersed in boat life, documenting the journey of turning a production cruising sailboat into a capable, self-sufficient home as we prepare for full-time liveaboard life. From major sailboat upgrades and off-grid power systems to everyday maintenance and skills building, we’re learning what it truly takes to own, sail, and live on a boat while working toward our goal of sailing around the world. If you’re into sailing adventures, beginner sailing, sailboat ownership, cruising lifestyle, and traveling the world by sailboat, our journey is all about real-time learning, ocean freedom, and building the confidence to chase long-term world cruising under sail. After an incredible long weekend at anchor, it’s time to raise the sails and begin our journey back across Moreton Bay—one of the most iconic sailing destinations in Australia. In this episode, we take you along for a real, unfiltered look at liveaboard sailing life as we leave our anchorage and head back out onto open water. This is what sailing in Australia is all about—changing conditions, beautiful coastlines, and the freedom of off grid sailing life. We walk you through the process of preparing the sailboat for passage, pulling anchor, and navigating Moreton Bay while dealing with wind, tides, and boat traffic. Whether you’re a beginner sailor or an experienced cruiser, this episode gives you a practical look at what it’s really like to sail a boat day-to-day. As full-time liveaboard sailors, every passage is part of the bigger journey of sailing around the world. From trimming sails to finding the best course across the bay, we share the decisions and challenges that come with life on a sailboat. If you’ve ever dreamed about sailboat living, cruising Australia, or learning how to sail, this video is packed with valuable insight and real sailing experience. Moreton Bay offers a perfect mix of protected waters and exciting conditions, making it an ideal playground for sailors and boat owners alike. Along the way, you’ll experience the beauty of Queensland’s coastline, the rhythm of life at sea, and the satisfaction of a smooth sailing passage. If you’re searching for liveaboard sailing Australia, sailing Moreton Bay, how to sail a boat, sailboat life, off grid sailing, or tips for beginner sailors, this episode is for you. We’re all about sharing the highs, the challenges, and the reality of living on a sailboat full-time. Join us as we continue our sailing adventure, exploring Australia by sea and working toward our ultimate goal of sailing around the world. Winter is finally starting to loosen its grip in Newfoundland, and that means one thing—spring boat projects are underway aboard Arabella. This week, we shift gears from skiing and backcountry travel to life aboard the boat, tackling the kinds of projects that keep a wooden sailboat ready for the next season. From repairing a decades-old hatchet that’s been part of this journey since childhood to rebuilding parts of the interior and preparing new wood for upcoming repairs, it’s all about making do with what we have and improving things one step at a time. Working aboard a boat in a limited space—with limited tools—means every project is a balance between function, efficiency, and adaptability. Nothing is ever truly finished, and everything is designed to evolve. As the ice begins to break up around Arabella, the focus shifts toward getting the boat ready for the upcoming cruising season—and all the adventures that come with it. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! Learn the "How" to anchoring with NauticEd's Anchoring Course - https://www.nauticed.org/sailing-courses/view/anchoring-a-sailboat?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=F_4Ano5PUBM Check out IMTRA the windlass experts - https://www.imtra.com Adding a chain inspection to your annual pre-launch checklist could be the difference between a reliable anchoring system and one that fails when you need it most. This video walks through everything you need to inspect on your anchor chain, rope, and splice before the start of every sailing season — and what to do when you find a problem. What this video covers: - How to lay out and inspect your chain link by link, and what wear, corrosion, and pitting look like - Why pitted chain must be replaced and when re-galvanizing is worth considering versus buying new - How to wash down your ground tackle dockside and why rinsing out salt regularly extends the life of your entire rode package - Why the backsplice joining your rope and chain must be inspected every single year for flexibility, fraying, tail separation, and elongation - Why a gap is intentionally left in the splice when it is first made, and how nylon shrinking around the first chain link causes windlass problems over time - How to restore flexibility to a stiff splice using your hands, a mallet, or a flathead screwdriver without causing any damage - How fabric softener in cool water can restore the flexibility of a stiff rope and extend its working life - How to double the life of your rope by cutting off a worn splice at the working end and re-splicing from the bitter end Annual inspection takes an hour on the dock. Skipping it can cost you your anchor at sea. In this video I carry out a full service on my Yanmar 3JH2E boat engine aboard my sailboat, a Hunter Legend 376 What started as a simple maintenance job quickly turned into one of those typical boat days… where nothing goes exactly as planned. During this service I change the engine oil, oil filter, diesel fuel filters, and bleed the diesel system before starting the engine again. If you own a Yanmar marine diesel engine, this is a real-life look at basic maintenance you’ll eventually need to do on your boat. The 26th edition of the Benetti Yachtmaster brought together captains, surveyors and owner representatives from around the world for three days of discussions, insights and shared experiences. For the first time, the entire event was hosted within Benetti’s production facilities in Livorno and Viareggio, offering guests the opportunity to step inside the beating heart of the Shipyard and experience firsthand where Benetti yachts take shape. Key topics included the modernisation of infrastructure and onboard technology, preventive maintenance strategies and the evolution of turnkey services designed to support owners and crews throughout the lifecycle of their yachts. Created in 2000 by Azimut|Benetti Group founder Paolo Vitelli, Benetti Yachtmaster continues to be a unique platform for dialogue between the Shipyard and the global yachting community. In Viareggio, the historic birthplace of Benetti, guests also experienced the atmosphere of the iconic Viareggio Carnival. Founded in the same year as the Shipyard, 1873, the Carnival shares deep roots with the maritime craftsmanship of the Darsena district, where shipbuilders once applied their boatbuilding skills to create the first spectacular allegorical floats. This evocative setting hosted a series of team-building activities designed to strengthen connections and encourage exchange among captains and industry professionals. In this episode of Mothership Adrift, we find ourselves anchored in the Maldives with a growing problem — our steering system isn’t working, and the solution isn’t immediate. While we wait, the wind begins to swing west and build, turning our once peaceful anchorage into an exposed and increasingly uncomfortable place to be. With conditions deteriorating, we make the call to move. That means rigging up the emergency tiller, working as a team to haul up the anchor, and carefully navigating through tight coral atolls to find shelter. It’s one of those moments that reminds you sailing isn’t always sunsets and snorkelling — sometimes it’s problem-solving under pressure. But the real test comes overnight. A violent lightning storm rolls through, lighting up the sky and keeping us on edge as we monitor our position, constantly checking we’re not dragging anchor in a place with very little room for error. By morning, we’re more than ready to move on. We set sail for another atoll — and are reminded exactly why we’re out here. Crystal-clear water, abundant wildlife, and that unmistakable sense of freedom that only life at sea can deliver. We’ve seen multiple boats hit each other this week because they didn't hold. "What should I do if a nearby boat starts dragging toward me?" Bottom line: Start your engine immediately and be ready to maneuver. Don’t rely on the other boat’s anchor eventually grabbing. Use your fenders, have your boat hook ready, and if you can, alert the harbor on VHF. . As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. . #SailingLife #Luperon #DominicanRepublic #BoatRescue #CruisingWorld #EmptyNesters #SailboatMaintenance #AnchorDrag #TravelVlog #NauticalLifestyle #HoMaidChef

🔨 We Can’t Agree On ANYTHING — But Watch What Happens Renovating our 1980s Florida home is no joke — and neither is renovating it together. In this episode, we tackle the main arches leading into the dining room… except we have two completely different visions for how they should look. Spoiler: only one of us wins that argument. 😅 Then just when we think we have a plan — she changes her mind on the kitchen, and now the office wall is coming back 2 feet to make room for the dream kitchen we always wanted. After nearly two years without a mast, this is the moment everything finally starts to come back together—we step the mast AND reinstall the boom, and for the first time in quite awhile… it actually looks like a sailboat again. In this episode of our sailboat refit, we complete one of the biggest milestones of the entire project. We fully rebuilt our mast from bare aluminum—removing every piece of hardware, sanding off all the paint, rewiring everything, servicing blocks, upgrading clutches, and fabricating custom components including spreader ends, light mounts, and a welded masthead plate for our electronics. But getting here wasn’t easy. Our biggest setback came from sourcing new turnbuckles for the standing rigging. After importing them and waiting weeks for delivery, we discovered they were completely wrong—threads didn’t match, pins didn’t fit, and we had no choice but to cancel our crane day. After sending detailed measurements and specifications back to the manufacturer, we waited another two months for replacements. This time, everything fit. Ten weeks after cancelling our original appointment, the crane returned and we successfully stepped the mast without incident. Then, just two days later—with the help of the yard—we were able to get the boom back on as well, bringing the rig back together faster than we expected. Now, with both the mast and boom installed, we’re rapidly working through the final tasks needed to get this boat back in the water. The momentum is real, and after a long refit journey, we’re finally closing in on launch. If you’re into sailboat refits, rigging, mast stepping, DIY boat restoration, and cruising sailboats, this episode captures both the technical work and the emotional milestone of putting the rig back together. We’re not done yet—but we’re closer than ever. ⛵ One step closer to sailing. 00:00 Feeling nervous 00:41 Channel intro 00:57 New turnbuckles 04:12 Diamonds 05:22 Step the mast 10:32 Reinstall the boom 11:26 Wrap up/Like and Subscribe 12:14 End Card #SailboatRefit #MastStepping #BoatRigging #DIYBoat #SailingLife #LiveaboardLife #BoatRestoration #CatamaranRefit

When Italian design meets American power, the result is the Wally Power X50, 50 feet of bold attitude and performance. Powered by four Mercury outboards delivering 2000 hp, it reaches up to 54 knots while maximizing deck and interior space, with easier maintenance. The wide beam and stepped hull enhance stability and efficiency. True to Wally’s DNA, its clean lines, wraparound glazing, and futuristic profile create a striking presence. Fold-down terraces in the cockpit further expand the onboard living space at anchor. @eddieswholesomehaven @wallyyachts_official . #Wally #WallyPowerX50 #YachtDesign #PerformanceYacht #LuxuryBoating

#boatmaintenance #sailing #portugal

Baking bread is probably not something one thinks about when sailing, but I have found that Sailboat Life is allot more about eating, than it is about sailing. You gotta eat. Can you make fresh baked bread on a small sailboat? I am using an ancient Einkorn flour. Einkorn is an ancient, unhybridized wheat with a nutty flavor, rich in nutrients (lutein, B vitamins) and higher in protein than modern wheat. It has weak gluten, making it easier to digest for those with sensitivities, though it is not gluten-free and unsuitable for celiacs. It requires less water in baking and is ideal for rustic bread, cakes, and cookies. In this video I talk about and then make some bread on my 32' Sailboat with my dog Buster at my side. Make Your Own Offshore Sails and Save Thousands: https://www.practical-sailor.com/sails-rigging-deckgear/sails-canvas/make-your-own-offshore-sails-and-save-thousands/ How long do sails actually last? Sailmakers often say cruising sails last around 10–15 years, but what happens when you discover a sail that’s nearly 50 years old? In this video I head to the sail loft to inspect the sails on my sailboat Lady K and uncover a surprising piece of sailing history: a genoa that turns out to be the original sail from 1980. That discovery raises an important question every sailor eventually faces when maintaining a sailboat — how long should sails really last? We break down the lifespan of Dacron sails vs laminate sails, why cruising sails can sometimes survive for decades, and the real factors that determine when a sail needs replacing. From UV damage and stitching failure to sail shape and performance loss, this video explains what sailors, cruisers, and boat owners should know before ordering expensive new sails. If you’re wondering whether your mainsail or genoa is worn out, or how to extend the life of your sails, this deep dive into sail longevity will help you understand what really happens to sailcloth over time. how long do sails last, sailboat sails lifespan, dacron vs laminate sails, when to replace sails, sailboat maintenance, cruising sailboats, sailboat genoa, sailboat mainsail, dacron sail longevity, sailing tips, sailboat gear, sail loft, sail inspection, cruising sails vs racing sails, sailboat ownership, sailing education Practical Sailor is your trusted resource for reviews of sailboats and sailing gear. https://www.practical-sailor.com Chat with us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/PracticalSailor/

This is the final episode in our haul-out series – the last push to get ARGO ready for the water again. After all the sanding, antifouling and maintenance work in Episode 2, we tackle some of the bigger structural jobs that have been waiting their turn. First up – fixing soft spots in the deck. It’s a long, awkward job in extremely tight spaces, but absolutely worth it. The result is a stronger, more solid deck and the peace of mind that ARGO is in great shape. We also complete the diesel tank repairs, including installing new fuel hoses so everything is running clean and reliable. With the engines sorted and the tanks repaired, ARGO is now in great shape mechanically as well. But… it wouldn’t be a haul out without a surprise. An unexpected job pops up (as they always do), extending our time on the hard by another week. Boats, hey! While we’re there, Jason makes the most of it and services the clutches, so everything is in top shape and ready for the season ahead. Along the way we tick off a number of other smaller jobs that always seem to appear when the boat is out of the water. After weeks of work, ARGO is now clean, strong and ready to sail again – and we can’t wait to get back out there and kick off sailing Season 3. Thanks for watching. The transformation is unreal… and honestly, the teak on our sailboat turned out SO GOOD. And the best part? We saved HUNDREDS of dollars doing it ourselves. In this episode, we are cleaning the teak on our sailboat which also happens to be our full time home, a sailboat named 'Emma James'. We are tackling everything from the aft bench seat, dolphin seats, and rear deck seat, to the shower floor and trims. Over time, teak can go grey, patchy, and tired… but instead of paying a tradie hundreds of dollars, we decided to try the JustTeak system and do it ourselves. And the results? Even though the distances between the islands are relatively short, you’re still out in the open Atlantic — hundreds of miles away from the mainland. And that changes everything. In this episode, we leave Sal behind and sail overnight to São Nicolau. What looked like a short passage on the map turned into another rough ride — with gusty winds, confused seas, and a broken autopilot. But as always… the reward comes after the challenge. We arrive in Carriçal, a remote fishing village surrounded by rugged volcanic landscapes and unexpected green valleys. A place that instantly slows you down and reminds you why we choose this life. In this episode: – Sailing from Sal to São Nicolau – Offshore passage between Cape Verde islands – Exploring Carriçal village – Hiking through green volcanic valleys – Local food, culture & slow island life And yes… this island felt very different. 👇 Have you ever sailed between remote islands like this? My life aboard was a mix of adventure and reflection, shaping an independent woman’s story of resilience, personal growth, and embracing the sailing lifestyle. Along the way, I became an ocean conservation activist with In Mocean, stumbled across my dog Boga, and discovered the joys and challenges of sailing with a dog. It’s been 10 years since we cut down the first tree and started building Arabella. Since then, this journey has taken us from the forest to the water—and now all the way to a frozen winter in Newfoundland. Along the way, there have been incredible highs, tough lows, and more adventure than we ever could have imagined. In this episode, we take a moment to reflect on that journey, share what’s changed, what hasn’t, and where we’re headed next. As we look ahead to a new season of sailing and exploration, we’re also making a few changes to how we create and share these videos. We’ll be shifting to a bi-weekly format for long-form episodes while adding more short-form content in between—so there’s still something new every week, just in a slightly different way. We’re also celebrating this milestone with a limited-run tee-shirt campaign, with proceeds going directly toward keeping Arabella moving—boat work, gear upgrades, and preparing for the next chapter along Newfoundland’s south coast. Thank you for being part of this journey. We truly couldn’t do it without you. Big changes and progress in our forward heads compartment. Just 79 days left of our 100 day to launch challenge. We are now living aboard our Rival 38 Centre Cockpit full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. We have a frequently updated blog at https://sustainablesailing.net with membership options and a weekly newsletter at £2 per month for Early Bird Supporters. Our free Sustainable Sailing book is at: https://sustainablesailing.codeberg.page/ Or visit our shop at https://sustainablesailing.teemill.com/ for great hoodies, t-shirts and bags. When we bought Vida in August 2019 she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all-electric (motor, cooking etc). Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail. EPISODE 335 Here's something most people don't realize about sailing: we spend about 80 to 90 percent of our time at anchor, not actually sailing. And honestly? Those are some of the best days. This is what a week at anchor in Fiji looks like for us: wing foiling, diving with black tip reef sharks, scuba diving incredible reefs, boat maintenance, and floating in the water with sundowners watching the sunset. This episode is all about finding that balance between staying active, exploring underwater, getting work done on the boat, and taking time to just be. This is the rhythm of cruising life. This is why we're out here. We spend time wing foiling in the anchorage, something I'm finally feeling confident doing again after my achilles recovery. We encounter black tip reef sharks cruising around the boat—elegant, sleek, beautiful animals that we never get tired of watching. They're curious, just like us. Not aggressive, but still wild. Still sharks. You respect them, watch them, appreciate them. The underwater footage from our scuba dive is some of the best we've captured in Fiji. Clear visibility, vibrant coral, abundant marine life. We get playful down there, explore, and just enjoy the freedom of being able to drop everything mid-day and spend an hour weightless on the reef. There's also boat work, because there's always boat work. I tackle a small project using Warren's tools, he does some engine maintenance, and we wrap up the day floating off the back of the boat with drinks in hand. This is the real cruising life that most people don't see. Not the passages or the big sailing days, but the weeks at anchor where we find our rhythm and remember exactly why we're doing this. WHAT WE COVER: Wing foiling in the anchorage Black tip reef sharks Scuba diving with incredible underwater scenes Daily boat maintenance and projects The balance of active life, exploration, and downtime at anchor Sundowners and life aboard in Fiji ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ⚓ Thanks for watching! We’ve taken on something BIG…. A Big pile of poo!!! After years of restoring and living aboard our sailing yacht *Ocean Melody*, life has brought us back to Wales — and instead of slowing down… we’ve done the opposite. This is our new off-grid cottage project. It’s remote, it’s rough, it’s completely off-grid… and honestly, it might be the biggest challenge we’ve ever taken on. In this video, we give you the full tour — what we’ve taken on, what state it’s in, and what our plans are moving forward. This will become our land-based base of operations alongside our floating off-grid life… but how it all fits together? We’re figuring that out as we go. Are we mad… or does this actually make sense? --- ⛵ We’re not giving up sailing 🏡 We haven’t sold the boat 🔧 We’ve just added another HUGE project to the mix --- If you enjoy boat life, off-grid living, renovation projects, or just watching people take on slightly ridiculous challenges… you’re in the right place. --- 🙏 MASSIVE thank you to our Patrons You guys are the reason we can take on projects like this and share them properly. If you’d like to support the channel and get more up-to-date behind-the-scenes content (including progress since this video was filmed), you can join here: 👉 [https://www.patreon.com/sailing-melody](https://www.patreon.com/sailing-melody) --- 📺 What’s coming next? We’re not quite back to weekly uploads just yet — things are a bit complicated behind the scenes — but there’s a LOT more to come on this project… and back on the water. --- 💬 Let us know in the comments: Are we completely mad… or is this actually a great idea? --- #OffGridLiving #RenovationProject #SailingLife #BoatLife #OffGridCottage #Homestead #SelfSufficient #DIYRenovation #AbandonedHouse #LifeLessOrdinary

In this video we tackle two things at once — and both are genuinely useful on their own. First, we walk through how we connected our Cummins Onan generator to the Victron Cerbo GX using a pair of timer relays, giving us remote start/stop, timed runs, automatic start on low battery SOC, and run hour logging for maintenance reminders. Then we go one step further: working with Claude AI, we built a closed-loop generator load optimizer — GenOpt — that runs natively on the Cerbo and automatically manages the AC input current limit in real time. No more babysitting. No more surging. And significantly more charge current than we ever safely achieved manually. Not sponsored — just a project we're genuinely proud of. In this episode I lay out my entire sail inventory and compare the P-16 and P-18 headsails and mainsails to see if there is any compatibility between them. The mast and boom length between the P-16 and the P-18 are identical, so I was thinking the sails may be interchangeable. Subscribe and follow @ColoradoSailing on YouTube for more original sailing videos, gear, boat maintenance, sailing tips and travel content as I sail my Precision 18 trailer sailer and Precision 16 sailing dinghy in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and South Dakota. #sailing #lakesailing #mountainsailing #saillife #sailingchannel #coloradosailing

We have 82 days left of our 100 day to launch challenge. Busy day. Returned hire car this morning and did food shopping. Then adapted a fantastic loan ladder - more like a staircase :-) The goal is to be able to move it around the boat to give great access for jobs. Paikea refit, sailboat restoration, America's Cup boat salvage, carbon fiber repair, sailboat interior renovation, DIY boat building, Volvo Ocean Race, boat refit series, Valencia boat yard After a huge push, we’re finally at a point where the massive refit of our boat, Paikea, is showing serious progress. We’re tired, but we’re committed, and in this video, we’re giving you a full walkthrough of where we’re at. In this episode: America’s Cup Salvage: We grabbed carbon nomex panels and massive carbon sail battens from an AC catamaran Alinghi 5 that was being demolished. Will it look cool or just warped?! Structural Stiffening: See how we used a carbon batten to fix a flexy spot on the cabin roof and prevent hard points. Interior Demolition & Reconstruction: We’ve ripped out the old liner and are rebuilding the galley, companionway steps, and a MASSIVE new pantry. Upcycled Lockers: Harry is building out his cabin with lockers from the Volvo Ocean Race boat, Trifork/Ericcson 4. Aft Cabin & Shower: The shower/toilet area is finally taking shape! We’re fitting a carbon sink we’ve been saving for years and building a custom floor. Smart Plumbing: We’re installing a gravity-fed black water system to minimize pumps and complexity. Plus new hatches, stanchions etc. We’re getting there! From the "oh sh#t" phase to the "okay, we’re getting there" phase, I definitely think there is a bit of crazy here on Paikea. ⚓ Seguimi su Instagram: @inbarcacondario ⚓ Seguimi su Facebook: IN BARCA CON DARIO 📩 Collaborazioni: inbarcacondario@gmail.com #barcaavela #varo #varobarca #cantierenautico #refitting #manutenzionebarca #navigazioneavela #velaitalia #nautica #barcheavela #ritornoalmare #diporto #vitainbarca #OutInNano ___________________________________________________________ The boat leaves the shipyard and is finally ready to go back in the water. In this video I take you with me through the launch and the navigation back home, after maintenance and refit work.
