A big job today as we fit the new deck beam to strengthen the bulkhead where for the inner forestay and windlass loads. We are now living aboard our Rival 38 Centre Cockpit full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. We have a frequently updated blog at https://sustainablesailing.net with membership options and a weekly newsletter at £2 per month for Early Bird Supporters. Our free Sustainable Sailing book is at: https://sustainablesailing.codeberg.page/ Or visit our shop at https://sustainablesailing.teemill.com/ for great hoodies, t-shirts and bags. When we bought Vida in August 2019 she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all-electric (motor, cooking etc). In this sailing vlog, we take you behind the scenes of what it really takes to prepare a boat for an ocean passage across the Indian Ocean. Before departure, we explored local markets and some very unusual shopping spots while provisioning the boat. Along the way, we discovered fascinating and sometimes surprising local habits that made the experience even more memorable. Just when we thought we were ready to go, a last-minute decision to inspect the propeller revealed a serious problem — a thick rope tightly wrapped around it. Luckily we caught it before leaving the harbour. Once underway on our passage to the Maldives, the trip quickly turned challenging. Strange noises started coming from the steering mechanism and we began experiencing steering problems. To stay safe, we ended up hand-steering the rest of the journey across the ocean — a real test of endurance and teamwork at sea. After the long passage, arriving in the Maldives felt incredible. Our agent met us at the boat along with officials from the different authorities to complete the formal arrival procedures — a unique part of entering this beautiful island nation by yacht. Join us for the full story of preparation, unexpected problems, and the rewarding arrival after an unforgettable offshore passage. Most wooden boat spars aren’t straight tapers — they’re elliptical. And laying one out is way easier than you think. Building a wooden sailboat mast, boom, or yard? Here’s how to lay out a proper elliptical spar taper — the traditional shape used on real wooden boats. In this video, Mark from Nomad Boat Building walks you step-by-step through the simple layout method used to create an elliptical taper on wooden spars. Whether your boat plans give you full dimensions or just major and minor diameters, this technique lets you accurately draw and cut a fair, traditional taper using basic tools and a scrap of wood. This is an essential skill for wooden boat builders working on masts, booms, and yards — and it’s much easier than it sounds. 🌐 Website: https://www.nomadboatbuilding.com 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nomadboatbuilding 🛠 Support these builds on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/nomadboatbuilding If these videos help you with your own boat project, consider supporting the channel on Patreon — it helps keep these traditional boatbuilding skills alive and more tutorials coming. ⏱ Chapters: 00:00 Who This Video Is For 00:12 What Is a Spar Taper? 00:27 Why Spars Have Elliptical Tapers 00:33 What Boat Plans May (or May Not) Include 01:23 When You Have to Figure It Out Yourself 01:49 Tools Needed for Layout 02:09 Establishing Reference Lines 02:42 Major vs Minor Diameter 03:02 The Concept of Stretching a Circle 03:21 Dividing the Circle into Equal Parts 04:20 Transferring Measurements to the Spar 05:26 Connecting the Dots for the Elliptical Curve 06:16 Using a Batten to Fair the Line 06:35 Important: One Face of a Spar Is Often Straight 07:27 Real Example from Boat Plans 07:52 Rounding the Spar (Teaser for 7-10-7 Rule) #boatbuilding #woodenboat #sailboatbuilding #traditionalboatbuilding #woodworking #marinemaking #diyboat #boatbuilder #sparmaking #mastbuilding

Exercise, sewing, squirting, amplifier, bimini tent Jump on aboard and join us at Sailing Intermission. Karen is feeling better and back in the swing of things with jumping jacks, weights and dancing. She squirts the bimini as she and Steve get Isabella all wet and clean. We venture into the marina’s parking lot with a large piece of used sunbrella. Why? It’s an old deck cover that we’re going to cut down to a smaller size to make a tent that will protect the bimini and partially shade the deck and salon area below. Steve whips out the trusty 237 Singer Sewing machine circa 1957. That baby just sews through pretty much everything; especially after being tuned by a local sewing center. After several feet of stitches, a needle battle wound and some well placed grommets, we’ve got our bimini tent and are ready for the spring and summer sun load. Ya’ll know how we love dancing and music. The Kicker speakers in the salon sound good and yet there are times they don’t inspire us to cut a rug. Steve begins the process of fishing wires to install an additional amplifier. That DIY project is to be continued. We can’t wait to hear boosted tunes down below soon. We truly appreciate all who watch our journey through boat life. Subscribers, can’t tell you enough how much we love ya’ll and how much you keep us going. In this episode we continue with the blister repair work, as we are finally ready to start spraying some gelcoat. We also carry on rebuilding our rudders, by filling them up with expanding foam, so that we can shape them later and glass over the whole thing. It’s all pretty experimental! After two months away visiting family in Canada, we finally return to our sailboat in Luperón, Dominican Republic. Leaving your boat unattended in the tropics is always a gamble, so we were relieved to find her looking surprisingly good when we arrived back. Of course, boat life means there’s always something to do. We start the process of bringing the boat back to life with a good clean and a few projects. One of the bigger ones in this episode is transforming our worn countertop by sanding it down and creating a beach-inspired epoxy finish. Coral and Kai are entertaining each others a lot more which makes it all easier. But life in Luperón isn’t just about boat work. This cruiser town has a unique community vibe. We enjoy local restaurants, movie nights with other sailors, and shopping for fresh local food around town. It feels good to be back aboard and settling into Caribbean cruising life again. What we thought would be a simple one-week haul out quickly turned into something much bigger… In this episode of Stella Overboard, we haul our sailboat Stella out of the water at Rebak Marina in Langkawi, Malaysia to begin some major maintenance and upgrades before continuing our sailing adventure across Southeast Asia. But almost immediately, things start going wrong. Within the first hour on the hard stand, we discover that removing a propeller is not nearly as simple as it sounds. After hours of hammering, heating, and pulling, we finally get it off — only to realize that we also need to remove the rudder before we can slide the prop shaft out. With the help of the amazing Rebak Marina team, our boatyard neighbors, and friends at Yacht Supplies Malaysia, we lift Stella back into the travel lift to drop the rudder — a job that turns out to be much bigger than expected. And just when we think we’re making progress… another problem appears. After removing our old cutless bearing and spending hours installing a brand new one, we discover the shaft won’t fit back through it, forcing us to cut the brand-new bearing back out again. Now we’re stuck without the part we need — and the only solution might be flying to Australia to pick up a custom one. Boat life isn’t always tropical anchorages and sailing into sunsets… sometimes it’s boatyard chaos, unexpected repairs, and learning everything the hard way. But every step brings us closer to getting Stella back in the water and ready for our next big adventure. ⚓ In this episode: Hauling Stella out of the water Travel lift and hard stand process Removing the propeller and prop shaft Dropping the rudder Cutless bearing replacement Boatyard life in Langkawi DIY sailboat maintenance ⛵ About Us We’re Camille and Jesse, a young couple who worked in the Australian mines to save enough money to buy a sailboat and chase a life of adventure at sea. We’re installing the LP SmartSide siding in Part 9 of our Mountain Home build, and staying healthy is key for this stage of construction. Head to https://drinkag1.com/atticus to get an AG1 Flavor Sampler and a bottle of Vitamin D3+K2 FREE in your Welcome Kit with your first AG1 subscription (a $72 value!). Building a house on a mountain comes with a specific set of problems—mostly involving gravity. In this episode, we tackle the most difficult wall of the build so far. With a steep bank and almost zero clearance for scaffolding, getting the LP SmartSide up was a logistical puzzle that really showed me the value of working with a professional crew. While the exterior is finally getting its "skin," we’re also heading inside to finish up the interior wall framing. Moving from my experience building a DIY shed to framing an actual home has been a massive reality check. I’m learning that in the world of professional construction, "perfect" is often secondary to "practical," and I’m sharing every revelation I pick up from the pros along the way. Huge thanks to the crew who helped make this happen — links to everyone involved below. In this video, we give our dinghy outboard a full spa treatment from start to finish. We cover everything from changing the gear oil and zinc to greasing the propeller, tapping out the tiny roll pin, accessing the lower unit to replace the hard-to-reach impeller, and wrapping it all up by greasing the fittings. This is a one-of-a-kind guide—there aren’t any other YouTube videos that walk through all of these critical maintenance steps in one place. If you want your outboard to stay reliable and running strong, you won’t want to miss this. #dinghyoutboard, #outboardmaintenance, #outboardmotor, #impellerreplacement, #lowerunitservice, #gearoilchange, #marineengine, #boatmaintenance, #sailinglife, #cruisinglife, #liveaboard, #smalloutboard, #outboardrepair, #boatlife, #sailingyoutube #tohatsu #twostroke #2stroke NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. Our shakedown cruise on Little Nutshell finally begins as we leave Shotley Marina and head out for our first night aboard. What starts as a simple system check quickly turns into a crooked night on the hard, a muddy hull clean and a whole lot of learning. Join us for boat maintenance, marina mishaps and the real start of our cruising adventure. Magnus installs the battery monitor on the dash and tidies up the electrical cables underneath before we cast off. We finally leave Shotley Marina and begin the first day of our shakedown cruise on Little Nutshell. The plan is to anchor out for the night and check her systems. We head into Tichmarsh Marina to visit the chandlery, as the harbour master has kindly let us pull up alongside. Then it’s out again and onto a mooring for the night, although we still don’t get to test our anchor. We check out the scrubbing poles at the marina, where we plan to head in the early hours of the morning to inspect Little Nutshell’s hull and give her a good clean so we can work out whether she needs antifouling or new anodes. Our calculations aren’t quite right and we end up sitting on the very end of the concrete footings for the scrubbing poles. It’s a crooked night from then on. We check her bottom and she’s in good nick. There aren’t too many barnacles on the hull, but the propeller is smothered in them. Magnus is a real gentleman and does the majority – actually, all – of the cleaning and scrubbing. It’s muddy, slippery and not the most pleasant job. Then it’s back out of the marina and onto a mooring for the night. Hope you enjoy the episode. Until next time, Wendy and Magnus HYPE US! Hi and welcome aboard @SailingAstridTheWombat We are Gav and Shezz and two and a half years ago we bought our Beneteau Oceanis 430 sailboat with absolutely no sailing experience and jumped straight into the deep end of liveaboard sailing. Our very first passage was just over 700 nautical miles, launching us headfirst into the world of bluewater cruising, learning to sail, and real life at sea. Since that moment, we’ve been fully immersed in boat life, documenting the journey of turning a production cruising sailboat into a capable, self-sufficient home as we prepare for full-time liveaboard life. From major sailboat upgrades and off-grid power systems to everyday maintenance and skills building, we’re learning what it truly takes to own, sail, and live on a boat while working toward our goal of sailing around the world. If you’re into sailing adventures, beginner sailing, sailboat ownership, cruising lifestyle, and traveling the world by sailboat, our journey is all about real-time learning, ocean freedom, and building the confidence to chase long-term world cruising under sail. In this episode of our liveaboard sailing journey, we dive into the real side of boat life — improving comfort onboard, tackling unexpected problems, and sharing the experience with friends as we continue preparing our sailboat for sailing around the world. Life on a cruising sailboat is never just about sailing; it’s about constantly adapting, upgrading, and learning as full-time liveaboard sailors. One of the biggest projects in this episode is upgrading our onboard comfort by measuring and fitting a new mattress for our sailboat. When your boat is your full-time home, sleep matters, and creating a comfortable living space is a huge part of sustainable liveaboard life. We walk through the challenges of working with limited space, unusual boat shapes, and the practical realities of improving life aboard a cruising sailboat. But as every boat owner knows, one job often leads to another. While preparing the cabin, we uncover something many sailors eventually face — mould on a sailboat. Dealing with moisture, ventilation, and condensation is a constant challenge in liveaboard sailing, and discovering mould means turning the boat inside out to clean, investigate, and prevent bigger issues down the track. This episode shows the honest reality of sailboat maintenance, problem-solving, and the behind-the-scenes work that keeps a boat safe and comfortable for long-term cruising. Amid the projects and cleaning, we also welcome visitors onboard, sharing a glimpse into the social side of liveaboard cruising life. One of the best parts of living on a sailboat is the community — friends stopping by, sharing stories, and experiencing life afloat together, even while the boat is mid-project. If you’re interested in sailboat living, beginner sailing, boat ownership, or dreaming about traveling the world by sailboat, this episode highlights both the rewarding and challenging sides of the cruising lifestyle. From boat upgrades and maintenance to everyday moments onboard, this is real life at sea — not just the anchorages and sunsets, but the work that makes those moments possible. Follow along as we continue transforming our sailboat into a comfortable, self-sufficient home ready for bluewater cruising and long-term adventure. Every upgrade, every challenge, and every lesson brings us one step closer to our goal of liveaboard sailing around the world. In this episode of Sailing Seabird, Stuart takes on one of the final steps of our engine rebuild… servicing the Yanmar KM35P gearbox. The problem? He has absolutely zero experience doing it. After months restoring the engine on our €1 abandoned sailboat, this gearbox service could either bring everything together… or ruin the whole rebuild. No pressure. We always say that if you only had one place you can visit on a boat it should be the engine room. The engine room can tell you a lot about the design and function of the vessel, and aboard the Korvet it’s obvious just how important this area is. The full-beam, walk-in engine room is accessed through a proper door—not a hatch—providing exceptional ease of use and maintenance. Generous dimensions allow for twin diesel engines, additional filtration systems, and a generator all in a sound-proof compartment. The result is a vessel engineered from the inside out for easy access to all systems, and serious passage making. 0:00 - Introduction 0:40 - Steering System 1:05 - Technical Room 3:45 - Engine Room Learn more about Korvet Trawlers: https://korvettrawlers.com/ Built by Deep Water Yachts: https://www.deepwateryachts.com/ #trawlerlife #aluminumboat #trawler #selene #nordhavn #aluminumyachts #trawlerfest #gonewiththewynns

⛵ Buon vento! The sails open, the boat comes alive, and she goes back to doing what she was built for: sailing. In this video I cast off the lines and head out for a short sail, just enough to stretch the sails, feel the wind again, and reconnect with that feeling only the sea can give. In today’s video, I replace the engine battery on the boat and walk you through the full process step by step. What should be a simple job on land is never quite that simple on a boat. From disconnecting the old battery to securing the new one properly so it won’t move in rough conditions, everything requires extra care. A loose battery at sea is not an option. After installation, we check the charging voltage to make sure everything is working correctly — and we’re getting a healthy 14.27V, so the alternator is doing its job. Along the way, I also talk about another postponed project: replacing the marine waterproof carpets. After checking prices, I decided that for now it’s better to clean and maintain what I have and prioritize more important mechanical investments. There’s plenty of winter work ahead: Full engine maintenance Possible exhaust hose replacement Cleaning the exhaust elbow Replacing the anchor chain due to corrosion Boat life means constant maintenance, but every small job done properly brings peace of mind. The last few steps before we get back into the water, phew. Between sanding, painting, and tackling those inevitable DIY jobs, I even end up making some pretty big holes in the boat. Candice lets slip a secret: she actually enjoys boat work... And then the time comes to splash for our third season onboard our little electric catamaran!

Thinking about buying a boat on finance? Financing a boat is the fastest way to start hating boats and turn a dream into a financial nightmare. In this video, we dive into the top reasons why you should never buy a boat with a loan. Here is what you need to know before making a huge mistake: Depreciation vs. Debt: A boat loses value immediately, but your debt doesn't. It is a continuous expense, not an investment, and you could easily end up owing much more than the boat is actually worth. Paying without sailing: You will be forced to pay your monthly loan even during months when bad weather, work, or breakdowns keep you off the water. Plus, the bank doesn't finance all the extra hidden costs of owning a boat, like mooring, insurance, maintenance, and fuel. Loss of control: Life is unpredictable. If you ever lose your job, or your family simply changes hobbies, selling a financed boat is a slow, complicated, and painful process. Instead of finding freedom, you end up trapped in a "floating cell" controlled by the bank, paying extra interest for the privilege. Watch the full video to find out why owning your boat outright is the only true way to enjoy the sea! 00:33 - The Boat Depreciates, the Debt Doesn't. 01:26 - You Pay for the Boat... In this episode, I sail through a 36 mph (31 knot) gust on a high-altitude (8,601 ft) Rocky Mountain lake in central Colorado. My small and lightweight (1,100 lbs) Precision 18 sailboat is not really designed for sailing in this kind of wind, but she sailed through it pretty well. I've made several modifications and upgrades to the boat to include adding a second reef to the mainsail, adding a hanked-on #4 (80%) severe weather jib to my sail inventory, adding additional blocks to the factory outhaul setup to flatten the mainsail, and a 4:1 backstay tensioner to add mast bend and flatten the top third of the mainsail. It's also taken a couple of years for me to build the skills for sailing in this much wind. At my mountain lake, 25 to 30 knot gusts are an almost daily occurrence throughout the summer sailing season. To further reduce heeling in the Precision 18, you can also raise the centerboard all the way up and just sail on the shoal draft keel which is a NACA foil (I did not do this for this sail) or you can add additional crew weight on the rail. For more severe weather sailing tips and tricks, check out my video "Storm Tactics for Inland Sailors" available at this link and also linked at the end of the video: https://youtu.be/Hixd4KHzCzs?si=JD8LmcgkB9x9ABwO Subscribe and follow @ColoradoSailing on YouTube for more original sailing videos, gear, boat maintenance, sailing tips and travel content as I sail my Precision 18 trailer sailer and Precision 16 sailing dinghy in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and South Dakota. #sailing #lakesailing #mountainsailing #saillife #sailingchannel #coloradosailing
We have found the documentation rather lacking, so it feels a big step to have built our own motor controls and got them working in the wheelhouse. Keep Birds Away from Your Boat and Dock: https://www.practical-sailor.com/boat-maintenance/keep-birds-away-from-your-boat-and-dock/ Thinking about buying a 40–45 foot cruising sailboat? Before you default to a Beneteau, Jeanneau, Catalina, or Hunter, this in-depth Practical Sailor review takes a hard, honest look at the Hanse 430E — a German-built cruising sailboat with a very different design philosophy. In this video, we break down everything buyers actually want to know about the Hanse 430E, including real-world ownership considerations, construction quality, sailing performance, and long-term durability. We take a close look at what the “E” (epoxy construction) really means, why epoxy matters for osmosis resistance and structural stiffness, and how it affects repairs and maintenance compared to traditional polyester or vinylester hulls. We also cover how the Hanse 430E compares to popular French production sailboats like Beneteau and Jeanneau, as well as American brands like Catalina and Hunter. Why do some sailors choose a Hanse instead? And why might others stick with the more common production boats? This review explains the tradeoffs clearly, without marketing hype. Topics covered in this video include: Hanse 430E specs in US measurements Epoxy hull construction explained for buyers Sailing performance and handling, including the self-tacking jib Deck layout and short-handed sailing advantages Interior layout, livability, and cruising comfort Common owner-reported issues and survey focus points What to look for when buying a used Hanse 430E Why the Hanse 430E sails differently than typical production cruisers If you’re shopping for a 43-foot cruising sailboat, planning to cruise as a couple, or trying to decide between a Hanse and a Beneteau, this video is designed to give you the big picture — the good, the bad, and the practical reality of ownership. Most people think wooden boatbuilding requires complicated math. It doesn’t. The 7-10-7 rule is a simple geometric trick that lets you turn square stock into a perfectly rounded spar — quickly, accurately, and without repetitive calculations. Square → Octagon → 16 sides → Round. Simple. Elegant. Reliable. 🌐 nomadboatbuilding.com 🛠 Support the channel: patreon.com/nomadboatbuilding #boatbuilding #woodworking #sparbuilding #handtools #traditionalcraft #geometry #DIY
The 7-10-7 Rule — An Old Boatbuilder’s Trick for Perfectly Rounding a Spar In this episode of Nomad Boatbuilding, I share a simple geometric method that replaces repetitive math when shaping spars by hand. Some people think wooden boat building requires complicated calculations. That can be true when designing boats — but building them is another story. In practice, geometry is often far more useful than math. The 7-10-7 rule is a straightforward way to divide the face of a square into proportional sections (7 units, 10 units, 7 units — 24 in total). By removing the corners at those marks, we quickly create an accurate octagon. Repeat the process and we move from square to octagon to 16 sides… and eventually to a smooth, round spar. In this video I cover: • How the 7-10-7 rule works • Why imperial rulers make scaling easy • Turning square stock into an octagon • Moving from 8 sides to 16 sides • Using (and making) a spar gauge • Applying the method to tapered spars • Why geometry beats repetitive calculation • Using the same principle for moldings, banjo necks, plugs, and even walking sticks This method works for squares, rectangles, trapezoids, and tapered spars. It’s one of those core pieces of traditional boatbuilding knowledge that makes shaping round forms efficient, accurate, and satisfying. 🌐 Website: https://www.nomadboatbuilding.com 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nomadboatbuilding 🛠 Support these videos on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/nomadboatbuilding If you value traditional boatbuilding knowledge and want to help keep these videos coming, consider supporting the channel on Patreon. ⏱ Chapters: 00:00 Introduction — What Is the 7-10-7 Rule? 00:43 Geometry vs Math in Boatbuilding 01:01 Turning Square Stock into an Octagon 01:24 How the 7-10-7 Division Works 03:56 Demonstration on a 6x6 Cross Section 06:24 From Octagon to 16 Sides 08:08 Applying the Rule to Rectangles & Trapezoids 11:17 Using the Rule on a Tapered Spar 12:37 Spar Gauges Explained 14:41 Imperial vs Metric Scaling 16:08 Making an Octagonal Plug for a Hollow Mast 17:38 Planing to the Lines by Hand 18:50 A Simple Tape Trick for Divisions 20:19 Beyond Boatbuilding — Banjos & Walking Sticks 21:14 Why This Method Works So Well #woodenboat #boatbuilding #sparbuilding #woodworking #handtools #traditionalcraft #geometry #DIYwoodworking #NomadBoatBuilding #MarkReuten
