Bikini stretching, batteries, windlass charger, illness, generator starter, pork chops Join us this time for bikini stretches, batteries, a generator fix and pork chops. We’ve been down with an energy zapping virus and are finally on the mend. Even dancing was hard to manage. Karen couldn’t stand being cooped up down below and had to get out on top for some fresh air and stretches wearing a bikini. Maintenance checks on batteries lead to replacing the group 27 engine starter battery, dated 7/20, and the Windlass battery, dated 9/19. The windlass battery was upgraded from a regular group 27 lead acid to a group 31 AGM. Both were still functioning though too old for us. Group 27 batteries are a bit heavy yet Steve was able to muscle them off the boat with little trouble. Then, uh-oh, the charger to the Windlass battery wasn’t working. Yep, another replacement project. New charger, Noco Genius 10amp, is now successfully mounted and working flawlessly. Since we were checking out some of Isabella’s systems, why not start up the generator? Always a good idea to do routine start ups. Well...except this time, the generator didn’t start! It sounded like a starter issue and luckily we had one on board. After blasting and soaking a tight bolt with PB Blaster, Steve took out the old and put in a new starter. We ended the week with some delicious pork chops, brined with sea salt and rubbed with oregano, onion and garlic powders, pepper and paprika. With an added side of coleslaw it was an excellent meal. Thank you so very much to our subscribers and viewers. Your comments and views really help to keep our spirits up especially during these past two weeks. We love having you aboard with us! After ripping out every hose and fitting in our boat, we committed to completely rebuilding our fresh water pressure system from scratch. Instead of traditional marine hose, we chose a PEX-A plumbing system with expansion sleeves—a residential solution that’s marketed as being easy for DIY installers and far more reliable long term. We’re firm believers that when household systems make sense on a sailboat, they’re often the better choice. To do it right, we invested in the expensive electric PEX expansion tool (the only realistic option for working in tight hull spaces) and ordered hundreds of fittings—sleeves, elbows, tees, manifolds, valves, and couplers in both 3/4" and 1/2". We ran nearly 200 feet of PEX pipe through both hulls, from engine room to engine room, and all the way forward into the bow locker. It was one of the biggest infrastructure projects of our refit. We made the final connection, stood back, and felt confident. We were wrong. To pressure test the system, we rented an air compressor and immediately discovered far more leaks than we thought possible. We chased air hissing through bilges, engine rooms, and heads. Soapy water bubbled at fittings we were sure were perfect. What followed was seven days of troubleshooting, ten hardware store runs, and a crash course in the realities of PEX-A installation. Here’s what we learned: Technique with the expansion tool matters more than you think PEX connections don’t seal well in very cold temperatures Reusing a fitting is nearly impossible once you cut off the sleeve—one tiny score mark can cause a leak Confidence is not the same thing as a sealed system After days of cutting, re-expanding, re-routing, and re-testing, we finally sealed the entire freshwater system...or so we thought. This episode is a real-world look at DIY boat plumbing, PEX installation on a sailboat, and the kind of setbacks that come with a full refit. It’s not glamorous—but reliable onboard systems are what make long-term cruising possible. *Episode 306 | The final countdown to the haul out is here.* In this episode, we tackle some of the most massive woodwork of the entire restoration. We are building the gaff spars, the main boom, and the jaws entirely from scratch. This isn’t just carpentry, it’s a race against the clock. The moon is shifting, the tide is rising, and Yabá needs to be out of the water tomorrow. *We wish we could stop the clock to get more jobs done, but time doesn't work that way.* Join us in the workshop for a deep dive into traditional ship carpentry, the reality of shipyard stress, and the satisfying moment when the last big build is finally ready for the sea. ⚓ *Subscribe* to follow our journey: If you want to see the full haul-out and the technical challenges of maintaining a handmade wooden boat, make sure to hit that subscribe button! → https://bit.ly/3dI3hBn 💙 *Support the adventure:* 🌊 *Join our crew on Patreon* → Exclusive content here: https://www.patreon.com/sailingyaba ☕ *Send us a drink* → via PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=JEA5R5RUDJDLY 🧢 *Shop our gear* → Coolest T-shirts and hats here: https://shopsailingyaba.com/ 💌 *Receive letters from the sea* → Sign up (for free) for MP's newsletter: http://sailingyaba.substack.com ✨ *Want to sail with us?* We’d love to share an adventure with you! But this wasn’t always our life. In 2020, we found Yabá abandoned, sinking, and on the verge of being lost forever. We had no experience in boatbuilding, only a wild dream and the determination to make it happen. We worked relentlessly, learning from the best local shipwrights and pouring everything we had into this rebuild. It took four years of sweat, setbacks, and unwavering commitment, but today, Yabá is more than just a boat, she’s our home, our biggest adventure, and the proof that crazy dreams can come true. In this special episode of The Art of Boatbuilding, we follow the incredible story of a man reconnecting with the boat he built as a teenager. After six decades in storage, the DN ice boat emerges from the dust of the barn and heads back to where it belongs gliding across the frozen surface once again. With perfect ice conditions on Lake Geneva, the moment finally arrives. What started as a teenage project becomes a lifelong story of craftsmanship, patience, and unfinished dreams finally realized. This is more than a boat launch. It’s a reunion between a builder and the work of his hands, 70 years in the making. “If you’re going to make it, make it beautiful.” Bob Emser As an advocate for backyard boat builders I offer a free 30 minute chat about your project. Life on a sailboat means learning how to fix things yourself… sometimes the hard way. In this episode of Stella Overboard, we haul our 39-foot sailboat Stella out of the water in Langkawi, Malaysia and take on one of the most important upgrades a boat owner can do — replacing every thru hull fitting and seacock on the boat. Old thru hulls can be a major safety risk offshore, so while Stella is on the hard stand we decided it was time to upgrade the entire system. With the help of Marine Supplies Asia and TruDesign, Jesse and I tackle the job ourselves — removing old fittings, installing brand new TruDesign composite thru hulls and seacocks, and learning a lot along the way. No boatyard crew. No professionals. Just two sailors figuring it out as we go. This refit is all part of preparing Stella for our next big adventure sailing through Indonesia in search of remote islands and surf breaks. If you're curious about sailboat maintenance, thru hull installations, or what life in a boatyard is really like — this episode is for you. ⚓ Boat: Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 39i 📍 Filmed in Langkawi, Malaysia Big thanks to: Marine Supplies Asia TruDesign 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. Changing a forestay on a catamaran without dropping the mast — is it even possible? We did it, and here's exactly how. Our forestay on SV GOAT (Lagoon 400) was overdue for replacement. The "right" way means unstepping the mast — a boatyard job, serious cost, serious hassle. We did it the hard way instead: at anchor, with the mast standing. In this episode we walk you through every step: rigging temporary support, managing tension, swapping the stay, and staying (pun intended) safe throughout. No yard. No crane. Just two people, the right tools, and a plan. What we cover: Why we chose to do it with the mast up Tools and hardware you'll need Step-by-step process from start to finish Mistakes to avoid (we made a few) Cost breakdown vs. having a yard do it Whether you're on a Lagoon, a monohull, or any cruising sailboat — if your forestay is due for replacement, watch this before you call the boatyard. SV GOAT is a Lagoon 400 catamaran currently cruising the Mediterranean. We document the real side of live-aboard sailing — maintenance, passages, and everything in between. In this video I show how EV chargers (often called wallboxes) communicate with the car using the Control Pilot signal. We look at the PWM signal, duty cycle, resistor states (A/B/C) and the diode safety check that tells the charger it’s really connected to a vehicle. To demonstrate this, I built a simple DIY EV charger tester that simulates a car so you can safely observe the charging handshake on an oscilloscope. This project is great if you want to understand: • how EV charging actually works • how the control pilot signal communicates current limits • why a diode is required for safety • how the PWM duty cycle controls the allowed charging current ________________________________________ Parts used in the DIY EV Tester WAGO Lever Nuts (wire connectors) WAGO 221 Lever Nuts 90pc Assortment https://amzn.to/40ioxF5 WAGO 221 Lever Nuts 28pc Assortment https://amzn.to/4rfHrYc Electronics Components Resistor Kit https://amzn.to/4rlecDo 1N4007 Rectifier Diode https://amzn.to/4rlevhw ON/OFF Round Rocker Switch https://amzn.to/4litZ4r Heavy Duty Rocker Toggle Switch https://amzn.to/46MHBPD Indicator LED Light 110V / 120V https://amzn.to/4stPQbo ________________________________________ Tools used in the video OWON Oscilloscope / Multimeter () (I am using the HDS2102 with 100MHz) but the 2CH 25 MHz is more then sufficient for this job https://amzn.to/46NlsR5 ________________________________________ EV Charging Test Equipment Triplett TEV300 Electric Vehicle Charger Test Kit https://amzn.to/4udFcau DEWALT Level 2 EV Charger https://amzn.to/40jTKYB ________________________________________ Affiliate Disclaimer Some of the links above are affiliate links. Hi and welcome aboard @SailingAstridTheWombat We are Gav and Shezz and two and a half years ago we bought our Beneteau Oceanis 430 sailboat with absolutely no sailing experience and jumped straight into the deep end of liveaboard sailing. Our very first passage was just over 700 nautical miles, launching us headfirst into the world of bluewater cruising, learning to sail, and real life at sea. Since that moment, we’ve been fully immersed in boat life, documenting the journey of turning a production cruising sailboat into a capable, self-sufficient home as we prepare for full-time liveaboard life. From major sailboat upgrades and off-grid power systems to everyday maintenance and skills building, we’re learning what it truly takes to own, sail, and live on a boat while working toward our goal of sailing around the world. If you’re into sailing adventures, beginner sailing, sailboat ownership, cruising lifestyle, and traveling the world by sailboat, our journey is all about real-time learning, ocean freedom, and building the confidence to chase long-term world cruising under sail. After spending three unforgettable days at an incredible anchorage, it’s time to pull up anchor and sail back across the bay — and this passage turns out to be anything but ordinary. In this episode of our liveaboard sailing adventure, we say goodbye to crystal-clear waters, peaceful anchor life, and off-grid living before setting sail once again aboard our home on the water. Life as liveaboard sailors preparing to sail around the world is never predictable, and this sail proves exactly why. On our way back, we encounter an unexpected visitor — a large sea snake swimming alongside the boat — a reminder of just how wild and alive the ocean can be when you choose the sailing lifestyle and slow travel by sailboat. As full-time sailors, every trip teaches us something new about comfort, safety, and making life onboard more practical. During this passage, we also tackle a real-world sailing challenge: improving visibility at the helm. Sitting comfortably while maintaining proper visibility and control is essential for long passages, so we work on a clever helm solution that makes steering easier and safer — a small upgrade that makes a big difference for everyday sailboat living. This episode captures the true rhythm of liveaboard boat life — peaceful anchorages, unexpected wildlife encounters, problem-solving at sea, and the constant learning that comes with preparing for long-distance cruising. Whether you’re a beginner sailor dreaming of ocean travel, a sailboat owner looking for practical ideas, or someone inspired by the idea of travelling the world by sailboat, this is real sailing life behind the scenes. Join us as we continue documenting our journey toward full-time world cruising, sharing honest moments of off-grid sailing, boat upgrades, sailing adventures, and life afloat. Subscribe and follow along as we prepare our sailboat for global adventures, learn new sailing skills, and embrace the freedom of slow sailing and liveaboard life. Facing the challenges of solo sailing as a female sailor, I navigated the highs and lows of single-handed sailing while tackling DIY boat repair projects, from engine fixes to full boat refits on a budget. My life aboard was a mix of adventure and reflection, shaping an independent woman’s story of resilience, personal growth, and embracing the sailing lifestyle. Along the way, I became an ocean conservation activist with In Mocean, stumbled across my dog Boga, and discovered the joys and challenges of sailing with a dog. Now, I’m exploring a new chapter, having jumped aboard my partner’s Hallberg Rassy Rasmus with Boga and his Australian Kelpie, Jango. Let's take an in depth look at how the marine diesel raw water system works on board your boat! A basic, very very critical system that requires attention from time to time! If you understand this system, maintenance and diagnostics become easier!
This week in Newfoundland, Steve and Carter finish their Baker’s Brook Pond recon with one more attempt to cross the ice and reach the big climbing terrain they came to scout. After backing off the previous day due to warming temperatures, they return with colder conditions, a better plan, and a clear strategy for managing the risks of crossing a frozen pond in the backcountry. They test ice thickness, spread out their weight on skis, rig ropes and backup systems, and work through the real decision-making that goes into moving safely across uncertain terrain. After exploring the far side of the fjord and confirming what’s worth coming back for, they return to Arabella to find a few new winter problems waiting at the dock. Back aboard the boat, Steve tracks down an electrical short that knocked out the bubbler, then tackles another liveaboard winter issue: Akiva’s dog hair clogging the electric heaters. From frozen ponds and backcountry route finding to troubleshooting life aboard in a Newfoundland winter, this episode is all about solving problems as they come. -------------------------- Episode #380 Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! This week on Escapade, we continue rebuilding the port side of our saloon — and it’s finally time to tackle the flooring. The old teak and holly had seen better days. After ripping everything out, we start fresh using three new sheets of teak and holly from World Panel Products. From templating and cutting to sanding and multiple coats of varnish, this job was a full process — and definitely not a quick one. And when we finally step back for the reveal? The new cabinetry paired with the fresh teak and holly completely transforms the space. Escapade honestly looks like a different boat. If you’re into boat refits, DIY sailing projects, teak and holly flooring installs, or behind-the-scenes sailboat life — you’re in the right place. Products we used in this project: Teak & Holly Panels: World Panel Products American Style Teak & Holly Plywood Veneer Website: https://www.worldpanel.com Location: Riviera Beach, Florida (but they ship all over the place) Phone: +1 (561) 840-0509 Varnish used on the flooring and cabinetry: TotalBoat Gleam Marine Spar Varnish – Amber Finish We used both Gloss and Satin to build up the coats and finish the look. In this episode, I tackle the job of replacing some of the original stumps supporting our beautiful old timber house. She has been slowly slumping for a while now, needing a bit of TLC. Restumping an old house is never just about swapping out timber. It is about working carefully, thinking ahead, and respecting a structure that has been standing for nearly ninety years. There were challenges, adjustments, and a few moments that required a different way of thinking to keep things moving in the right direction. If you are interested in restoring old homes, timber house foundations, or the realities of maintaining a 1930s weatherboard house, this one is for you. DIY Retractable Solar Panels on Speed Rail Arch - Cape Dory 30 Refit Part 4. To maximize solar power in the restricted space on this 30-foot Cape Dory cutter (with electric propulsion), we designed this no-weld/no-bend method for a DIY retractable solar array arch built from Speed Rail fittings, aluminum pipe, and heavy-duty stainless-steel drawer slides. The two extendable panels stow flush under the two fixed upper panels while maneuvering in a marina or for low windage when sailing offshore in heavy weather. They slide out on tracks to deploy when needed at anchor or in moderate conditions offshore. The arch is done but the wiring will be covered in a future video. Subscribe to follow the refit. For more sailboat projects, visit AtomVoyages.com Parts List: Eight pieces 6463-T66 schedule 40 polished anodized 1.25" pipe sold in two pieces 23' stock length. (we used about 36' total) $270 total. It's easiest to cut the pipe and angle on a chop saw but you can also cut it with an angle grinder or hack saw. We purchased two pieces 1.25" polished 6463 grade aluminum schedule 40 pipe in standard 23' lengths from our local wholesale supplier. At $135 each it was cheaper than ordering 8 pieces of cut lengths online. Bright polished anodized aluminum pipe is twice as expensive as 6061 non-anodized and if you don't have a local wholesaler then anodized pipe cost could be prohibitive, which is why most DIY builds choose non-anodized. In that case be prepared to let it weather into that dull oxidized appearance. Note that pipe (like this Schedule 40) is measured by its Nominal Inside Diameter (ID), while stainless steel tubing is measured by its Outside Diameter (OD). This 1.25-inch pipe has an OD of 1.66 inches. If you’re building a larger arch, you'll want to use 1.5-inch pipe (1.9" OD). We used Schedule 40 because it’s plenty strong, lighter, and less pricey than heavy-walled Schedule 80. Two pieces 6061-T6 3/16" x 2" x 62" angle bar (NOT anodized) sold in one piece 25' stock length $87. Anodized angle bar is hard to source and in this build it is not in a highly visible area so doesn't matter if it becomes oxidized on the surface. A stock 25' piece of angle bar is double what we needed but at $87 it was cheaper than buying two shorter pieces online. And we can use some of the leftover on other projects. Speed-rail fittings: 1. Four pieces 1.25" Tee-E $16.48 each https://www.buyrailings.com/shop/variant/07060-5e-tee-e-aluminum-magnesium-1-1-4-ips-12794 2. Four pieces 1.25" elbows $21.16 each https://www.buyrailings.com/shop/variant/07020-3-elbow-aluminum-magnesium-1-1-4-ips-12035 3. Four pieces 1.25" Rectangular Base Flange $22.34 each https://www.buyrailings.com/shop/variant/27170-47-rectangular-base-flange-aluminum-magnesium-1-1-4-ips-12476 4. Two sets stainless steel drawer slides, 27 9/16" closed length. McMaster-Carr Model: 13875A21 $80 each. Solar panels: Two 200 watt and two 100 watt N-type BougeRV 200w bi-facial panels. Because these are N-type bi-facial, shade tolerant, and wired in parallel, they will cope with partial shading better than standard single-sided P-type panels. Clamps and fasteners: We used two Garhauer Dinghy Davit Stern Rail Clamps 1″ to 1.25″ DD-SRC 1-1.25 $75 each. These tube clamps are not a perfect fit to 1.25" pipe but are still useable. You can special order these clamps for 1.5" tube for a better fit (model DD-SRC 1-1.5) or look elsewhere for different style cheaper clamps. Fasteners: 16 sets 3/8" stainless hex bolts sized for deck thickness and backing plates, nuts and washers for bases 12 pieces 1/4" x 3/4" flat head stainless machine screws for angles to pipes 20 pieces #10 x 1/2" flat head stainless machine screws for Tracks to angle bars 20 pieces #8 x 3/4" flat head stainless machine screws, nuts and washers, for tracks to solar panels 24 pieces 3/8-16 x 1/2" Allen head stainless cone point set screws to replace Speed Rail zinc-plated steel set screws AtomVoyages.com #DIYBoatProject #SailboatSolar #Speedrail #AtomVoyages

In this episode I cover the recurring checks I do on my two boat trailers. If you're like me and you keep your boat in a marina, then it's a good idea to take the opportunity to do a thorough inspection and make any repairs while the boat is not on the trailer. However, with the exception of bunk repairs, most of these items are easily addressed even with the boat on the trailer. It's always a good idea to have a regular routine of pre-towing checks and annual inspections for your boat trailer. I hope you find this information helpful. So you found a $5,000 sailboat. It floats. It has a mast. The owner says “just needs a little TLC.” What could possibly go wrong? In this episode of Lady K Sailing, we break down the real numbers behind “cheap” sailboats. Standing rigging replacement, new sails, chainplates, soft deck repairs, bulkhead tabbing, and what it actually costs to repower with a small diesel like a Beta Marine. The purchase price is often just the down payment. If you’re shopping for an older 30-foot sailboat like a Catalina 30, Pearson, C&C, Ericson, Hunter, Tartan, or similar cruising boat, this video will help you understand the true cost of ownership before you write that check. We’ll talk about: • How much standing rigging really costs • The price of new sails for a cruising sailboat • What happens when decks need recoring • Chainplate replacement and structural repairs • Diesel repower costs on older sailboats • Why deferred maintenance is so expensive • When a cheap boat is actually a good deal • When it absolutely is not Cheap sailboats aren’t bad. Small sailboats aren’t bad. But old boats with tired systems can quietly turn a $5,000 purchase into a $40,000 project. If you’re buying your first sailboat, upgrading to a cruising boat, or dreaming about sailing to the Bahamas or the Caribbean, this is the math you need to understand before you commit. Lady K Sailing is all about helping more people get sailing more easily, and that starts with making smart buying decisions. If you’ve ever bought a “cheap” boat, drop your experience in the comments. We haven't touched a dock in over 14 months. Logic says we should be out of water, power, and patience, but the reality is we’ve dialed in the system. On SV Agua Azul, we don’t have the luxury of a shore power cord. If the solar or the logistics fail, the party’s over. This is the blunt truth of long-term off-grid survival. The secret to staying off-grid isn't just big batteries; it's managing the "Island Squeeze." From battling chop in a 20-year-old plastic dinghy to grab Amazon packages, to knowing which butcher has the "feet meat" and which doesn't—it’s all about the supply chain. We’re showing you how we manage 800Ah of lithium and bifacial solar to keep the bacon frying and the watermaker humming without ever needing a marina. 10:15. The mission shifts from maintenance to a logistics nightmare. We’re prepping to leave the boat and get Bella back to the States, and between crate training a high-anxiety dog and international "paperwork," we’re hitting a hard limit. THE BUTT PUCKER RATING: 1/5 (Mostly just annoying logistics, unless you count the raw sewage on the streets). VETERAN & SAILOR DEBRIEF: We leave our eggs out and put potatoes in paper bags—standard island logic or asking for trouble? I’m checking the logs and replying to the Crew for the first 24 hours. How Much Does It Cost to Live on a Boat? In this episode, we share our honest numbers. We’ve been asked this question a lot – how much does it actually cost to cruise full-time? In this episode we break down the real annual cost of living aboard ARGO and share exactly where the money goes. From everyday running expenses to the bigger one-off upgrades, we’re opening the books and sharing the numbers. There were definitely a few surprises along the way, but overall we discovered we sit around the mid-range of what many cruising sailors spend. Whether you’re dreaming about sailing full-time or just curious about the reality behind the lifestyle, this is a transparent look at what it really takes to live on the water. In this episode we cover our 9 key cruising expenses: • Maintenance • Provisions (food & groceries) • Insurance • Alcohol (because… boat life 🍷) • Fuel • Subscriptions & connectivity • Eating out • Marina & mooring fees • General day-to-day spending We also talk through some of the bigger one-off costs we faced during the year – including major upgrades that every cruising boat eventually needs. If you’ve ever wondered what full-time sailing costs in the real world, this one’s for you. Thanks for watching. We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. How to Replace Sailboat Plexiglass Windows: A DIY Guide: https://www.practical-sailor.com/boat-maintenance/diy-projects/how-to-replace-sailboat-plexiglass-windows-a-diy-guide/ Do you—or someone you sail with—hate heeling? You’re not alone. For many sailors, excessive heel is the single biggest reason people feel uncomfortable on sailboats or stop sailing altogether. In this Practical Sailor–style deep dive, we ask a simple question with a surprisingly technical answer: which sailboats heel the least? Using real design data from popular cruising sailboats between 38 and 42 feet, we break down the key factors that influence heel, including sail area to displacement ratio, ballast ratio, displacement length ratio, and overall stability characteristics. We compare conservative heavy cruisers to modern production boats and explain why some designs feel calm and steady while others feel lively—or even intimidating—at the same wind speed. This isn’t about speed or racing. It’s about comfort, confidence, and keeping people sailing. If you’ve ever sailed with a nervous partner, a hesitant family member, or if you yourself dislike the feeling of a boat leaning too far, this video will help you understand which designs tend to sail flatter and why. We also explain an important truth many sailors miss: heeling isn’t just about the boat—it’s about sail power, reefing habits, and how a boat is sailed. Some boats are naturally harder to knock over, while others reward early reefing and careful trim. Boats discussed include popular cruising designs from Pearson, Hallberg-Rassy, Island Packet, Catalina, Beneteau, Jeanneau, Bavaria, and Dufour. If you’re shopping for a sailboat, sailing with a reluctant crew, or simply want a calmer, more comfortable experience under sail, this video is for you. Practical Sailor is your trusted resource for reviews of sailboats and sailing gear. https://www.practical-sailor.com Chat with us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/PracticalSailor/
Sharp tools aren’t a luxury, they’re a quiet necessity. In this video Bob Emser, walks you through the process he uses for sharpening chisels using the VEVOR 1 x 30 Belt Grinder. This compact, affordable machine has become a reliable part of his sharpening routine, creating clean, consistent edges suitable for fine woodworking. Bob Covers: • How to set up the 1x30 specifically for chisels • Belt selection and grit progression • Establishing and maintaining a proper bevel angle • Preventing heat buildup and protecting the temper • Producing a micro bevel edge for a scary sharp chisel When you’re fitting planks, cutting gains, or dialing in tight joinery, a properly sharpened chisel makes the work quieter, cleaner, and more precise. The tool should move through the wood with intention, not resistance. “If you’re going to make it, make it beautiful.” Bob Emser Discount code with promo code VVGG8 On a Vevor 1 x 30 As an advocate for backyard boat builders I offer a free 30 minute chat about your project. In this travel vlog, we leave the coast behind and venture deep inland to explore some of Sri Lanka’s most iconic sights and hidden gems. Our journey takes us on an incredible safari through Yala National Park, where we search for wildlife in their natural habitat. We then experience the world-famous scenic train ride from Ella to Kandy, often called one of the most beautiful train journeys on Earth. The adventure continues as we climb the legendary Sigiriya Rock Fortress, learn about Sri Lanka’s renowned gemstone industry, and visit the sacred Temple of the Tooth, home to one of Buddhism’s most important relics. We also attempt the breathtaking pilgrimage hike up Adam’s Peak, but not everything goes to plan. Along the way, we face unexpected challenges — including a shocking wildfire in Ella that turns part of the trip into an unforgettable moment. In this episode of our liveaboard sailing journey, we continue our adventure at Moreton Island after sailing across the bay and anchoring near the famous sandhills. What looked like an ordinary anchorage turns into something incredible as the tide drops, revealing a stunning sand bar in the middle of the bay. This is the magic of cruising sailboat life — constantly changing landscapes, remote locations, and wildlife encounters you simply can’t experience on land. As full-time liveaboard sailors preparing for sailing around the world, these are the moments that remind us why we chose life on a sailboat. At low tide, we head off the boat to explore the sand bar, wading through crystal-clear shallows surrounded by untouched nature. Before long, we’re sharing the water with sea turtles and stingrays, gliding effortlessly over the sand beneath us. Encounters like this are what make off-grid sailing life and bluewater cruising so special. This episode captures the true essence of boat life — freedom, nature, and discovering hidden places that only sailors can reach. From anchoring in beautiful locations to exploring tidal sandbanks and swimming in remote waters, this is the lifestyle that draws so many people to liveaboard sailing and world travel by sailboat. It’s not just about passages and destinations; it’s about the unexpected wildlife, the shifting tides, and the adventure waiting just off the stern. If you’re interested in sailing adventures, beginner sailing, sailboat ownership, or dreaming of traveling the world by boat, this episode shows the incredible experiences that come with the cruising lifestyle. We share the reality of living aboard, learning as we go, and turning everyday anchorages into unforgettable experiences. Join us now as we settle into liveaboard life and get our boat ready to take off and sail around the world. As new sailors we want to share all of our learnings and keep it real in our videos. We want to show step by step what it takes to choose a boat, buy the boat and learn how to sail. Our sailing learning curve is steep so come along with us as we learn and grow as liveaboard sailors. We promise you will have a laugh! Often overlooked by travelers heading straight to the coast, Guadalajara offers some of the best food, culture, and nightlife in Mexico, and Lake Chapala delivers stunning views, relaxed vibes, and a completely different pace of life. We spent our days wandering historic streets, discovering incredible restaurants, and experiencing why so many travelers and expats fall in love with this region. Piccoli spazi, grandi soddisfazioni. When you learn to work with your prop instead of fighting it, the marina stops being stressful and starts making sense. It’s not about power. It’s about technique. Not speed—control. Tight spaces. Confident moves.
