While most Leopard 43s on the market today are still powered by their original engines with 4,000 to 7,000+ hours, Hippocampus has already undergone one of the most significant and expensive upgrades a cruising catamaran owner will ever face: a complete repower with twin Beta Marine 40hp diesel engines. Sometimes fiberglass layups just don't go as planned. In this video, I walk through how I removed a failed fiberglass and epoxy layup from my kayak after suspecting the glass cloth had been contaminated ,causing the epoxy to not bond properly. Using a heat gun, I was able to soften the epoxy just enough to peel the fiberglass cloth away cleanly. I'll show you the technique I used, what to watch for, and how to avoid damaging the kayak surface underneath. Whether you're dealing with a bad layup, contaminated cloth, or just need a do-over, this method might save your project. Episode 271 We’re in Townsville, and what started as a routine outboard fix quickly turned into an absolute mechanical marathon. 😅 First, our dinghy outboard stops passing water. We head down to a local breakers here in Townsville to grab some replacement parts, but after putting it all back together, things go from bad to worse. After years of planning, researching, sourcing parts, and redesigning, we're finally building one of the most important systems on ROAM: our DIY lithium house battery bank. Instead of purchasing pre-packaged marine batteries, we imported individual 2.3-volt lithium cells directly from China and built the entire system ourselves. Why? Two reasons: cost and space. By building our own batteries, we saved approximately $40,000 compared to equivalent marine battery systems. Just as importantly, we were able to dramatically increase our energy storage density within the limited space available aboard the boat. More power, less space, and a lot more work. Our final design consists of: 🔋 Four 48-volt batteries for the primary house bank 🔋 Two 24-volt batteries for equipment not available in 48 volts ⚡ Enough stored energy to support our goal of comfortable off-grid cruising Building the bank turned out to be far more involved than simply stacking cells together. We started by constructing a custom battery box to provide a perfectly flat and level foundation. We added anti-arc protection, a Mylar isolation layer to reduce friction, and developed a somewhat unconventional tie-down system designed to keep the cells secure even in extreme conditions. Along the way, we faced plenty of challenges. Finding room for the BMS units, bus bars, contactors, fuses, and cabling while maintaining a clean layout proved harder than expected. After changing the cell arrangement partway through the build, we had to purchase new BMS sense wires and rethink portions of the installation. The result isn't quite as tidy as we'd envisioned, but it's safe, functional, and delivers exactly what we set out to achieve. Like many parts of this refit, it's a system we'll continue refining as we move closer to launch. Anguilla should be on all sailor's lists to visit, if only for a short stay. Pristine beaches and beautiful coastlines make it worthwhile. Learn how to sail Anguilla while keeping the costs down in this video. Why did we go to Anguilla ? Anguilla is not a popular destination for sailors, but of course we had to find out why. We had heard it was simple math. Anguilla’s entry fees were unreasonably high. Anchoring in Road Bay is free. You can make it your home base and then rent a car or scooters to see the rest of the island. Or you can pay anchoring fees per night. Your rate is based on your boat’s registered tonnage. Gross Tonnage? Net tonnage? The gross tonnage is the volume of all enclosed spaces of the ship. Our Leopard48 boat weight specs 37000 pounds dry weight, and if you convert to tons 18.5. Gross tonnage is supposedly 55 – Net tonnage around 45. Remember this is a volumetric measure that has nothing to do with physical weight. Our USCG registration said 37 tons, so guess what we paid. Too much! We decided to invest for 2 nights. *Harbour Fees – yachts up to 20 tons - $50. *Cruising Permit Fees as of 2022 publication – to go anywhere other than Road Bay. **5 to 20 tons– $225 EC ($85US) /day. **Over 20 tons - $560 EC ($207US) /day. You may only anchor overnight in NON Marine Park areas. The goal is to move from a temporary setup to something more permanent and versatile that allows me to tilt the panels for better efficiency while living at anchor on Marisa. Using some stainless steel bars I had on hand, I've managed to create a much more stable and adjustable structure. Marine diesel serpentine belt upgrade kits are great in theory, and if properly made for your engine, they 'should' be easy for the DIYer to install with basic tools. Balmar is notorious for making kits and accessories at a premium price, that don't really fit the engines they are designed to fit, claiming that it's the customers fault for problems. Normally, I'm not the one installing a new kit, but I don't come across alot of these issues in the field after they have had some major failures due to poor fitment. I want to show you what I mean, so you can be prepared for some of the potential issues/fixes you may face if purchasing one of these kits! It may not be the "easy" install you were told.
