After nearly a year of planning and waiting, we finally begin building out the heart of our onboard electrical system ⚡⛵ In this episode, we tackle a major refit milestone by designing and installing the core power infrastructure for our catamaran. We’re building a native 24V and 48V electrical system, and the first big decision was relocating critical power equipment out of a deck locker that posed a serious water intrusion risk. Instead, we converted the forward captain’s berth/office into a dedicated utility room — safer, drier, and far more serviceable. To support the electrical gear, we built a custom structural wall using 1-inch Coosa board laminated with 1/4-inch fiberglass for strength and rigidity. As we mocked up the layout, we discovered that not everything would fit as planned — the large inverters had to be moved to an adjacent wall, forcing a rethink of the design before final installation. With the wall bonded in place using bolts and Sikaflex, we mounted a significant portion of our power system, including: Victron inverter and transformer Two battery chargers DC/DC charger 24V and 48V DC bus bars AC electrical panel(s) This Victron equipment has been stored away for nearly a year while other refit priorities took precedence, so finally getting everything mounted and positioned feels like a huge win. The system is coming together, and the next major step will be wiring and commissioning the power plant. This is volume 1 of two volumes which details the work done on the boat while in Anacortes in Sept/Oct 2025. This came after the trip to Alaska and upon return to Washington, before our run South to Mexico. There was extensive work carried out. Some planned and some not planned. For those who like to see the upgrades and maintenance work on a boat this is a perfect viewing opportunity.

This episode documents the removal of a leaking forward deck hatch aboard Paikea and the process of filling and structurally rebuilding the opening. The hatch over Harry’s bunk had been a long-term source of water ingress. Rather than replacing it like-for-like, we decided to remove the opening entirely and move ventilation to a side port light positioned under the gunwale, where it’s protected from direct rain and green water. Tom Thorne from Ancasta Yacht Services talks through the essentials of antifouling and why it is such an important part of boat maintenance. He explains how keeping your hull properly antifouled helps extend the life of your boat, prevents weed growth that can clog bow thrusters, and reduces drag that would otherwise harm fuel efficiency. Tom also covers the key preparation work needed before applying antifoul. From ensuring the hull surface is ready, to wearing the correct protective gear such as overalls, a face mask, goggles and gloves. He highlights the tools required, including a sander, hoover and grip disc, and the importance of taping waterlines, shafts, engines and skin fittings. The video explores the different types of antifoul, noting that motorboats typically use harder formulations than sailing boats, and why applying two coats is generally recommended.

Bulkhead reinforcement isn’t about adding more fibreglass—it’s about understanding how loads actually move through a boat. This episode marks the end of our Canary Islands chapter — for now. After sailing through the archipelago, we arrive on El Hierro, the westernmost island of the Canaries and our final destination before pressing pause. From the marina in La Estaca, we set out to explore two more places that feel important to share. We travel south to La Restinga, a small fishing village. A place where celebration, tradition, and global realities meet. We also visit El Julan in the Valle de El Julan, one of the island’s most important pre-Hispanic sites, offering a quiet glimpse into El Hierro’s deep history.
