Next Dimension is in exceptional condition, well maintained with low hours and light use. She is hull 54 in this popular Nordhavn 40 series. Next Dimension is a second generation (built by South Coast in China). The consumption entry document from when she was newly imported into the US (CBP-7501) will be handed to the buyer. The first 45 hulls were built by Pacific Seacraft in California. All Nordhavn 40s are born from the same tooling, but PAE, the parent company of Nordhavn, differentiates the two versions in this series as Mark I US made, and Mark II China built. This design has generous interior accommodations (saloon and galley on the entry level, raised pilothouse and two staterooms with one head on the lower level) and a seakindly ride through the water. Next Dimension was ordered with the optional fly bridge, which provides an excellent outdoor area above the pilothouse for taking command underway or relaxing when at rest. The saloon is spacious because it is pushed out on both sides, no wasted space filled with rarely used walking side decks. The entry level merges the saloon into the galley with a set of stairs up to the raised pilothouse or down to the accommodations deck. The owner stateroom is forward, there is a shared head and shower and the guest stateroom has two bunk berths. The engine room is surprisingly spacious, benefitting from the proprietary “maintenance strakes” in the hull mold that provides additional headroom on both sides of the main engine. Systems and equipment are selected and installed for reliability and service ease. The pilothouse is arranged for optimal operation with good sight lines and easy to reach controls. The flybridge adds a second command station and the tender is mounted on the boat deck, launched by the mast and boom. For stabilization, she has both paravane outriggers and active fin stabilizers. The Nordhavn 40 is a full displacement trawler that was designed and built to transit oceans. A sistership completed a 26-week circumnavigation in 2001 (with listing broker Jeff Merrill crewing a leg). The Nordhavn 40 design is the smallest passage maker built by PAE and boasts a 3,000 mile range. Most Nordhavn 40 owners are “owner operators” who enjoy the reliability of this design and savor time aboard, planning, traveling and resting at anchor. During our overnight passage, we discovered that our navigation lights weren’t working, so we began troubleshooting to figure out whether the bulb had failed or if the wiring had corroded. After running into a bigger issue than expected, we decided to pause the project until we can get the right parts. Thankfully, we had a much more exciting reason for coming to Moorea: swimming with the humpback whales. And what a welcome distraction it was! We joined Dr. Poole for a half-day whale tour and spent hours in the water with a mother and her calf. Winter has fully set in around Arabella in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland—the harbor is freezing, ice sheets are moving with the tide, and keeping the boat safe becomes a daily task. This week we show how we protect a liveaboard sailboat in icy conditions using a deicer (bubbler system) and even a floating log to shield the hull from shifting ice. Once the boat is secured, we head out for two unique ice climbing days on Newfoundland’s west coast. First, we climb a 200-foot frozen waterfall and rappel using V-threads—leaving nothing behind on the ice. Then we top-rope surreal sea cliffs formed by freezing ocean spray at Bottle Cove, where ice crashes directly into the Atlantic below. After 73 days in the boatyard…the rudder saga finally ends. We designed them. Second-guessed them. Stressed about foam compression. Ripped off Coosa board. Glassed them. Sanded until our arms stopped working. And then realised the boat wasn’t even high enough to fit them. Classic. In this episode we’re finally finishing our DIY catamaran rudders on our 57ft abandoned catamaran - testing our bearings, setting our 6mm hull gap, bogging, fairing and doing everything we can to make sure these blades are ready for launch in 7 days. This is the last major job standing between us and the water. We’ve lived on a steel Adams 35 for five years, steel fabrication we understand. Fibreglass rudders with coosa board and H115 foam cores ? That’s been a STEEP learning curve. When your outboard engine doesn't wanna start, it can of course have multiple reasons. From experience, the carburetor is the most common. Those little nozzles can clog up quickly and practically starve the engine. Sounds difficult but no worries, it's actually pretty straight forward. In this video I show you how to take out the carburetor, open it up, clean it safely, and reassemble everything with expected result, the engine starts and runs like new! Tools required: Socketwrenchset, screwdrivers, some rags and patience. So let's fix our Yamaha 8HP two-stroke outboard together! In last week's episode, I arrived at the marina to find my Torqeedo Travel 1103C outboard had been damaged by a severe wind storm. It wasn't so much the 40 mph winds, as it was the direction of the winds directly into the marina. According to the marina staff, there were 3-4 foot waves rolling right over the breakwater and swamping all the marina docks. Several boats were damaged and the only other sailboat at the lake broke from its mooring ball and ended up against the shore. So in this episode, the replacement part arrives from Torqeedo. I teardown the Torqeedo Travel motor, install the new part, reassemble the motor and perform a function check. Overall, it was a pretty easy installation, albeit quite expensive. This incident really has me wondering if keeping my sailboat in a marina in this volatile part of Colorado is sustainable. There's a reason this marina only has 12 slips and I've been the only sailboat to ever rent a slip here. Maybe it's time to become a daysailor? New cockpit enclosure in the works!
EP64 of Sailing Roam is full of surprises! What started as prepping the anchor chain became a complete windlass replacement. Watch Geri and Shawn clean, repair, and upgrade their cruising catamaran in this hands-on refit episode. After nearly 18 months of refit work, it was finally time to tackle one of the last untouched systems on our sailboat refit: the windlass and chain locker, all in preparation for a shiny new anchor chain. In this episode, we dig into inspecting our existing windlass and gypsy to see if they were still serviceable—or if repair, maintenance, or full replacement was unavoidable. What we found was worse than expected, and honestly a little scary: the windlass was in such poor condition that we’re lucky it hadn’t failed on us already. As Shawn wrestled with removing the windlass, we uncovered another major issue hiding in plain sight—a rotten wood bulkhead inside the chain locker. Years of rust, dirt, and debris from the old galvanized anchor chain had turned the chain locker into a filthy, neglected space. Geri took on the big cleanup job, sanding and cleaning the chain locker down to bare surfaces, while Shawn cut out the rotten bulkhead entirely. To make sure this problem never comes back, we replaced the failed wood with Coosa board, a rot-proof composite material ideal for marine environments. We tabbed the Coosa in with fiberglass, creating a strong, permanent structural repair. After the glass work cured, Geri sanded the resin drips, applied epoxy primer, and finished the space with bilge coat paint. The transformation is incredibly satisfying—watching a grimy, rust-stained chain locker become a clean, bright, and beautiful space again. The locker is now fully prepped and ready to receive new anchor chain… just as soon as the new windlass arrives. This episode is a perfect example of refit life: one project leads to another, unexpected problems surface, and in the end the boat is safer, stronger, and better than before. Can You Really Sew a Sail Yourself? Sure! Removing and repairing a genoa isn’t exactly a small job – especially when you’re doing it yourself. In this episode, Jason takes on the first challenge solo: figuring out how to remove the genoa and get it off the boat with no help! Once it’s down, good mate, Jim, steps in and the real test begins – resewing the sunshade protection using a Sailrite sewing machine neither of them had ever used before. What could possibly go wrong? Armed with the instruction manual (and a fair bit of optimism), the boys tackle the stitching and, against the odds, end up with a seriously solid result. No ball gowns will be sewn anytime soon, but the genoa is repaired, the stitching is strong, and ARGO is ready to go sailing again – all with minimal swearing. With the boat buttoned up for winter, it’s finally time to head into the mountains. In this episode, Steve, Robin, and Carter take the new DIY pulk sled bags into the backcountry for a winter camping and ski reconnaissance trip just north of Corner Brook, Newfoundland. Before heading out, Steve walks through how the winter tent over Arabella has transformed life aboard—cutting down condensation, blocking wind, and making cold-weather living far more comfortable. After waiting out uncooperative weather, the crew loads the sleds with gear, including a compact wood stove, and sets off toward the Blow Me Down Mountains along the Humber Arm. Thin snow, exposed trail sections, and heavy sleds make the approach more challenging than expected, forcing off-trail travel through tuckamore and careful terrain choices. The trip becomes less about skiing steep lines and more about learning the land—scouting bowls, gullies, avalanche paths, and access routes for future trips when conditions improve. Lofting can be intimidating, but breaking down the math makes it simple. I will show you exactly how to take your line drawings and adjust them so your station molds are the perfect size for your planking thickness. We are the only boat builder with this method, and you are welcome to copy our method. This video explains a unique method for calculating a new table of offsets with deductions for hull planking, as demonstrated by JungleRanch. It shows how to use polynomial regressions, including 2nd and 3rd-degree equations, to achieve this, using numerical methods and data analysis to improve accuracy.
