Life at the Marina While the Captain Is Away | Townsville Cruising | Sailing with the Jameses Ep.165
While Sam is away in Vanuatu, we’re holding down the fort and settling into marina life in Townsville. In this video we take you along for a look at what day-to-day life is like at the Breakwater Marina — from cruiser-friendly facilities and family-friendly attractions, to markets, cafés, swimming spots, and easy ways to keep kids entertained while living aboard. Marina stays are often short and busy for cruisers, filled with maintenance, provisioning, and catching up on life admin — so Townsville has been a great place to pause, reset, and enjoy some shore-based comforts while still living the cruising life. If you’re a cruising family, planning a stop in Townsville, or just curious what marina life looks like when one half of the crew is away, this one’s for you. --------------------------------- 🎉 WANT TO KEEP VIDEOS COMING? Life on a liveaboard sailboat isn’t just sunsets and smooth sailing — it’s constant maintenance, problem-solving, and a never-ending list of boat jobs. In this episode, we take you behind the scenes of real liveaboard sailing life as we tackle the everyday jobs that keep our sailboat moving, safe, and ready for long-term cruising. From fixing small issues that pop up without warning, to staying ahead of preventative maintenance, this is what full-time sailboat living really looks like. When you live on a boat, you quickly learn that every system matters — electrical, rigging, plumbing, deck hardware, and everything in between. There’s no calling a tradesperson when you’re anchored out, so you become the mechanic, electrician, and problem-solver all in one. We also dive into our solar upgrade plans, a crucial step toward energy independence for anyone living aboard or planning to sail around the world. Reliable solar power on a sailboat means fewer engine hours, quieter anchorages, and the ability to live off-grid for longer. We talk through why we’re upgrading, what we’re hoping to achieve, and how improving our boat electrical system supports long-term cruising and life at anchor. If you’re interested in liveaboard sailing, sailboat maintenance, cruising upgrades, or learning what it really takes to travel the world by sailboat, this episode offers an honest look at the work that happens between passages. These are the jobs that don’t make the highlight reel, but they’re essential for safety, comfort, and self-sufficiency at sea. Whether you’re a beginner sailor, a sailboat owner, or someone dreaming about quitting land life to live on a boat, this video will give you realistic insight into the lifestyle. Boat projects, upgrades, and maintenance are all part of the journey — and they’re just as important as the sailing itself. Thanks for joining us as we continue preparing our sailboat for long-term cruising and life as full-time liveaboard sailors. If you enjoy real sailing content, boat projects, and honest cruising life, don’t forget to like, subscribe, and follow along as we sail toward our goal of exploring the world by wind power. It's been two years since our first sail in @SailingAstridTheWombat actually that means it's been a year and a half since our first sail ever. That's right a year ago we bought this Beneteau Oceanis 430 and pulled the sail up for the first time ever when we brought her home. A sail that stretched 700 nautical miles from Townsville in Far North Queensland Australia to Moreton Bay in Brisbane Queensland. We are now preparing to move onboard and to sail around the world. Join us to see the challenges as we continue to learn to sail, prepare our boat and make changes so our boat feels like a home. We are moving onboard in just a few weeks so our sailing dream is getting closer and closer. Each experience we have and each new sailing skill learnt just keeps bringing us closer to taking off to sail around the world in our Beneteau Oceanis 430 @SailingAstridTheWombat living our boat life dream. We are Gav and Shezz an Aussie couple with a dream to sail and scuba dive around the world. We bought our Beneteau Oceanis 430 in October 2023 with zero sailing experience but the belief that we can do this. We have filmed our journey from looking for boats, buying the boat and downsizing our house so we can liveaboard and all the messy wonderful life stuff in between. Join us now as we start to get our boat prepared for liveaboard life. As new sailors we want to share all of our learnings and keep it real in our videos. We want to show step by step what it takes to choose a boat, buy the boat and learn how to sail. Our sailing learning curve is steep so come along with us as we learn and grow as liveaboard sailors. In this video, Capt. Jay Williams of David Walters Yachts (DWY) walks through the winter shrink-wrap process for a motoryacht—why it matters, how it’s done properly, and the key details that protect your investment through the off-season. You’ll see how a professional shrink-wrap setup helps safeguard exterior finishes, keeps the boat clean, reduces UV exposure, and—when done correctly—maintains ventilation to minimize moisture and mildew issues during storage. If you’re preparing your yacht for winter layup (or evaluating a boat that’s stored under wrap), this is a practical, real-world look at what “done right” actually looks like. This episode covers my 7th outing in the new-to-me 1987 Precision 16 sailing dinghy I purchased locally for $800. This time I return to beautiful Aurora Reservoir in Aurora, Colorado on an unusually warm November day. Aurora Reservoir is a city park in the City of Aurora, CO. The park features a sandy swim beach, modern 3 lane boat ramp, clean restroom facilities and nice picnic areas. The reservoir permits electric motor and hand-powered watercraft only...no gas outboards permitted. The reservoir is open to boating until 1 December. The Precision 16 is a lightweight Stephen Seaton-designed un-ballasted centerboard sailing dinghy with a planing hull manufactured from 1982 until the mid 90s. It was superseded in 1995 by the smaller Jim Taylor-designed Precision 15 (P-15CB and P-15K). Subscribe and follow @ColoradoSailing on YouTube for more original sailing videos, gear, boat maintenance, sailing tips and travel content as I sail my Precision 18 trailer sailer and Precision 16 sailing dinghy in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and South Dakota. #sailing #sailingdinghy #coloradosailing #mountainsailing #AuroraReservoir #sailingvideo
An overcast sky did not diminish a great day on the water. Winds started out of the ESE and took a swing to the South throughout the day. The wind speed increased throughout the day from 5 to 10 to 10 to 15 as predicted. We sailed south along the west coast of Southern Door County to Red River County Park and then back. Join us as we sail into Thailand and walk through the full check-in process for arriving by boat. Phuket makes the formalities surprisingly efficient, with Immigration, Customs, and the Harbour Master all located in the same building. After clearing in, we continue north to Yacht Haven Marina, where we begin the long wait for our new solar panels for a 'yacht in transit'. What seems like a straightforward upgrade turns into a drawn-out process filled with logistics, approvals, and unexpected delays. During our time at the marina, we take advantage of the wait to tackle a long list of boat projects, maintenance tasks, and onboard improvements. We also explore the Thailand International Boat Show, a major highlight of the region’s marine calendar. The event draws an impressive lineup of superyachts and showcases the latest in marine innovation, offering a glimpse into why Thailand has become a leading destination for the global yachting community. If you’re planning to sail into Thailand, curious about the realities of yacht maintenance abroad, or interested in the vibrant marine scene in Phuket, this video offers valuable insights and an inside look at life afloat in one of Southeast Asia’s premier boating hubs. Stuck in the marina but want to use your boat's solar power first? Tired of paying for shore power while your panels sit idle? In this video, we reconfigure our Victron MultiPlus inverter/charger to PRIORITISE our solar and battery bank, making grid power an automatic, conditional backup. We’ll walk through the two key advanced settings: AC Input Control and Prioritise Other Energy Sources. Learn how to set load and voltage thresholds so your boat runs as an independent "island," only tapping into shore power for heavy tools or when batteries are low. We even do a live test with a vacuum cleaner to show the seamless switchover in action. Every year, workers are seriously injured or killed during confined space entries — and most people don’t realize how dangerous tank inspections actually are. In this video, I take you inside a Ship's Water ballast tank inspection to show what we professionals deal with on site. Limited space, low oxygen, poor visibility, and zero room for error make this one of the most dangerous environments to work in. This isn’t a movie scene. This is real inspection work, real safety procedures, and real risk. If you work in: • Industrial plants • Oil & gas • Fire & safety • Engineering & maintenance • Confined space operations …this video is for you. #ShipWaterBallastTankInspection #BallastTankInspection #MarineInspection #ShipMaintenance #ShipInspection #MaritimeSafety #ShipRepair #WaterTankInspection #VesselInspection #ShipsAndVessels #MarineEngineering #CargoShipInspection #BallastWaterTank #ShipSurveying #MaritimeEngineering #ShipOdyssey #VesselMaintenance #ShipLife #ShipSafety #MarineInspectionVideo #ShipFleetManagement #ShipSurveyors #Shipowners #NavalEngineering #ShipTechnology #ShipInspectionRoutine #MarineVesselInspection #ShipUpkeep #WaterTankCheckup #MarinerLife ⚠️ Remember: Confined space entry without proper training, gas testing, ventilation, and PPE can be fatal.
This week aboard our sailboat, we were racing the clock to prep our bare mast for restepping — and winter had other ideas. With a hard deadline looming, we took on an ambitious list of mast projects, working in cold temperatures, late nights, and even falling snow. Our goal was to get the mast fully ready to go back in the boat. That meant installing the mast track, running all electrical wiring and lines, and mounting critical hardware including pad eyes, blocks, the gooseneck, and radar. We also upgraded the deck hardware by switching from traditional mechanical rope clutches to constrictor clutches, a less common setup in the cruising world that offers a cleaner, simpler approach. While prepping the mast, we cleaned up the standing rigging and ran into an unexpected setback while servicing the furler — discovering a bent extrusion. We ordered a replacement, only to have the wrong size arrive, pushing us further behind schedule. To finish the masthead, a friend stepped in to help weld a custom plate that will support the VHF antenna, anchor light, and weather station. On the day of the weld, the weather turned brutal, with snow dumping down as we worked. Despite the long days and hard push, we ultimately missed our deadline and had to reschedule the mast stepping for another month out. We’re still waiting on the correct furler extrusion and new turnbuckles, but we’re confident that next time, we’ll be ready. ⛵ In This Episode: Mast prep for restepping Mast track, wiring & line runs Pad eyes, blocks, gooseneck & radar install Constrictor clutch upgrade Standing rigging cleanup Furler extrusion setback Custom masthead welding Cold-weather and night work realities Refit deadlines vs real life If you enjoy real-world sailboat refits, technical mast work, and honest sailing life — setbacks included — this episode is for you. 00:00 We have a date 00:18 Channel intro 00:36 Hardware 01:08 PSA 01:49 Mast track 04:10 Wires and cables 09:17 Pad eyes, gooseneck, and blocks 11:26 Running rigging 13:32 Standing rigging 14:19 Radar 17:39 Clutches 19:34 Furler 21:32 Mast top plate 23:02 Wrap up 24:57 Like, subscribe, comment, emoji 25:21 End card #SailingLife #BoatRefit #SailboatMaintenance #CruisingLife #Rigging #MastWork #DIYBoatProjects #SailingCouple #SailboatRestoration #LiveaboardLife ----------------------------------------------------------- #SailingLife #BoatRefit #SailboatMaintenance #CruisingLife #Rigging #MastWork #DIYBoatProjects #SailingCouple #SailboatRestoration #LiveaboardLife © Sailing Roam 2025

In this video, I show how I prepare my sailboat for bad weather when the forecast confirms strong wind approaching. This is the simple routine I follow every time in the marina to keep the boat safe and reduce the risk of damage: checking the mooring lines, adjusting the fenders, verifying the docking setup, and securing anything that might move when the wind starts picking up. After weeks of sailing through the Canary Islands, we arrive on El Hierro — the westernmost island of the archipelago and one that instantly captured our hearts. In this episode, we explore the island’s incredible contrasts: from the lush cloud forest (laurisilva) high in the mountains, down to the rugged coastline and the striking red sands of Playa del Verodal. El Hierro’s dramatic landscapes, powerful winds, and quiet beauty make it a unique stop on our sailing journey. Whether hiking through misty forests or standing on volcanic shores, this island reminds us just how diverse sailing destinations in the Canaries can be. We are a sailing couple living life on a sailboat, documenting our journey as we continue sailing the world and cruising the Canary Islands full time. Our channel shares the realities of the sailing lifestyle — the freedom, the challenges, and the connection to nature that comes with traveling by sailboat. My life aboard was a mix of adventure and reflection, shaping an independent woman’s story of resilience, personal growth, and embracing the sailing lifestyle. Along the way, I became an ocean conservation activist with In Mocean, stumbled across my dog Boga, and discovered the joys and challenges of sailing with a dog. Now, I’m exploring a new chapter, having jumped aboard my partner’s Hallberg Rassy Rasmus with Boga and his Australian Kelpie, Jango. Dirt-cheap Winter Insulation for Liveaboards: https://www.practical-sailor.com/boat-maintenance/dirt-cheap-winter-insulation-for-liveaboards In this video, we dive into one of the most important — and most ignored — parts of boat ownership: thru-hulls and seacocks. These tiny fittings decide whether your boat stays floating or becomes an unplanned submarine, and most sailors never give them a second thought. We cover everything you need to know to keep your boat safe, including: • What thru-hulls and seacocks actually do • The #1 cause of below-waterline failures • Why some materials fail (brass, stainless, composites, bronze) • How to inspect your system • Common installation mistakes • Which hoses and clamps are actually safe • What to replace, when, and why • Simple monthly maintenance you should be doing • Real-world failure scenarios • How to make sure your boat never sinks from a preventable leak Whether you’re a new boat owner or you’ve been sailing for decades, this guide will help you understand the most important valves on your boat — and how to keep the sea on the outside where it belongs. It’s time to leave Arabella for six weeks as Steve and Robin head back to the United States for the holidays—but not before getting the boat safely settled for early winter in Newfoundland. With the cover on, heaters set, and friends keeping an eye on things, Arabella is ready to rest while the crew visits family. This episode follows the transition from boat life to shore life and then dives into something special: a full behind-the-scenes look at the complete teardown, inspection, cleaning, and rebuild of Arabella’s feathering propeller at AccuTech in Dover, New Hampshire. From seized blades and marine growth to German-engineered brake rings and precision pitch tuning, you’ll see exactly what goes into a proper feathering prop service—and why it matters. Whether you’re here for winter prep, travel days, or deep mechanical nerdiness, this episode has a little bit of everything. In this episode: • Preparing Arabella for six winter weeks alone • Holiday travel on the ferry back to the States • Limited-run Arabella merch clean-out • Searching for affordable boat insurance • Full feathering propeller teardown + how it really works • Pitch tuning, brake rings, and expert maintenance tips • What causes prop damage—and how to avoid expensive mistakes • Before-and-after transformation of the prop -------------------------- Episode 374 Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! ► We didn’t manage to catch up with Honda at Metstrade, due to conflicting schedules, but their major new product, a new V6 engine, was unveiled at the show. We finally got to see this new outboard at the Paris Nautic Show with Thomas Delavenne, regional manager of Honda Marine France. ► The engine, available in 200, 225, and 250 horsepower versions, features a completely redesigned look. Understated, more contemporary, and now consistent with the more powerful BF350, the new V6 significantly modernizes the range. While the engine is very attractive, it’s the internal evolution that really makes an impression. Honda has reworked the injection system, which historically could have been improved in certain generations. The result is enhanced acceleration, smoother power and, according to the brand, up to 20% less fuel consumption in certain speed ranges. The exhaust has also been optimized, significantly reducing noise, a sensitive issue on family boats and outboard-powered multihulls. ► Another notable advance is full compatibility with the BF350’s rigging. Controls, wiring harnesses, and electronic logic are harmonized, simplifying original equipment installation and refining twin-engine setups. ► Honda also emphasizes accessories, a feature that Thomas is keen to highlight. The new electronic controls offer a more precise and fluid feel. The electronics now include useful features such as trim support, which automatically adjusts the trim according to speed, and auto-tilt, which raises the engine with a double click without remaining pressed. These are small improvements, but they really change life on board. ► The Honda Pro range of oils and consumables now accompanies these engines, designed to stabilize performance and facilitate maintenance. ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! Welcome aboard Tangaroa — Blaine & Janis' legendary aluminum trawler-style liveaboard, also known as The Never Ending Sea Trial. We spent the day exploring every corner of this boat: • the extended aft deck packed with fuel, water & storage • their winter-ready enclosed back deck and wood stove • the remodeled galley and pilot house • crew quarters, workshops, and hidden spaces • and finally… one of the wildest DIY engine rooms we’ve ever seen Blaine replaced the original Detroit Diesels with two Cummins truck engines, engineered custom systems, built his own charging setup, installed a huge lithium bank, and created a mechanical masterpiece below deck. If you’re into boats, engines, creative problem-solving, or long-range liveaboard life, this tour is pure inspiration. Inspecting a previous repair on my 2010 Precision 18 sailboat after finishing the sailing season in Colorado. Last year, I noticed my stern horn cleats were loose, the sealant at the deck had been broken, and they needed to be re-bedded. All boats require regular maintenance and re-bedding horn cleats, chain plates and other deck hardware is just a normal part of sailboat maintenance and ownership. Since the factory installation of the horn cleats only used stainless steel washers as backing, I decided to add a 1/2" HDPE board as a backing block to help strengthen the mounting location. I used JB Marine Weld epoxy and 3M 5200 sealant along with new stainless bolts, washers and lock nuts for this project. #lakesailing #mountainsailing #sailing #boatmaintenance #howto #boatrepair
We’ve officially brought the old crew back together. Brett, Ayanna, me (Jade), plus our salty sea dogs Dingo and Penny — five souls, two days across the Atlantic, with about seventeen more to go before we reach the other side where Ayanna’s newly purchased boat is waiting for her. We’re uploading these videos in near real time from the middle of the ocean. As you watch this, we’re still somewhere out here on the deep blue, rolling with whatever today throws at us. No polished edits. No retakes. Just raw life at sea — sleep-deprived shifts, wing-on-wing sailing, dog ear surgeries, laundry strung across the cockpit, fishing attempts, spa day braids, DIY safety gear, and the daily dance with the weather. Today’s episode is a full window into what it really looks like to sail across an ocean with your best friends, your partner, and two adventure-loving pups. You can find our live tracker in the description below — hop aboard as ghost crew and follow along with our crossing. If you haven't already, hit subscribe so you don’t miss a single sunrise, problem-solving session, or moment of boat-life chaos. What the hell happened to catamarans? The multihull market is falling off a cliff. Boats that once sold in a bidding frenzy are now sitting idle—collecting dust and dropping prices like dead weight. This isn't a dip; it's a full-on market crash. We're diving into 5 brutal reasons why catamaran prices are suddenly CHEAP and why the "floating condo" dream turned into a financial bust: The Post-Pandemic Hangover: Why thousands of new owners are now dumping lightly used cats. Ownership Costs Catching Up: Why two hulls mean double the maintenance (and expensive, specialized slips). Brutal Depreciation: Why these luxury vessels suffer car-level depreciation, losing massive value in just 2-5 years. Sailboat Rudder Types Explained: Skeg-Hung, Spade, Twin & Aperture Rudders (with Capt. Jay Williams)
Join Capt. Jay Williams for a clear, real-world breakdown the major sailboat rudder designs: skeg-hung, spade, twin rudders, and aperture/keel-mounted rudders. Whether you’re evaluating a bluewater cruiser, buying your first sailboat, or simply want to understand how rudder design impacts safety, handling, and performance, this episode gives you the knowledge every sailor should have. Jay draws from a lifetime at sea—cruising, running commercial vessels, managing shipyards, and overseeing new builds—to explain how each rudder type performs in real conditions: offshore swell, tight maneuvering, grounding scenarios, and heavy-weather helming. This is the practical, experience-based insight you won’t get from a textbook. ⚓ What Jay Covers in This Video The structural and performance differences between skeg-hung, spade, twin, and aperture rudders Which designs offer the best protection, steering feel, efficiency, and redundancy How rudder type influences offshore reliability and maintenance requirements Why some modern performance cruisers favor twin rudders How older full-keel and aperture designs behave under sail and power This video is essential for sailors considering a long-range cruiser, passagemaker, performance yacht, or classic full-keel sailboat — and for anyone who wants to understand the most critical steering component on a boat. If you have questions about sailboat systems, offshore readiness, or purchasing the right yacht for your goals, contact Jay Williams at David Walters Yachts. 📞 Jay Williams – David Walters Yachts: 305-788-1121 📧 Email: jay@davidwaltersyachts.com 🌐 davidwaltersyachts.com – Search all listings and market reports Sailboat rudders, skeg hung rudder, skeg rudder, spade rudder, twin rudders, aperture rudder, keel hung rudder, rudder design, rudder types explained, bluewater sailboat design, sailboat steering, boat rudder maintenance, offshore cruising safety, sailboat survey tips, cruising yacht design, yacht rudder failure, rudder bearings, sailboat handling, modern performance cruisers, full keel boats, sailboat basics, sailing education, Captain Jay Williams, David Walters Yachts

Sailboat Buyers BEWARE: That dreamboat can turn into a very expensive floating regret faster than you can say “seacock.” We expose the 5 big mistakes new buyers make—all of them completely avoidable if you know what to look for. This video walks you through the harsh realities of boat ownership, covering what sinks more dreams than storms ever could: The "Instagram Boat" Trap: Why falling for charm and varnish leads to endless maintenance. Cost Underestimation: Why you must budget 10% of the boat’s value annually for upkeep. The Surveyor’s Warning: Why skipping the marine survey or ignoring the red flags is a catastrophe waiting to happen. Lifestyle Mismatch: Choosing the wrong boat for your actual life, not your fantasy life. Neglecting the Learning Curve: Why buying a 40-footer and trying to "figure it out as you go" is a recipe for disaster. Buy the boat that lets you live the dream without destroying it in the process. ⏱️ CHAPTERS: 00:00 Intro: Expensive Floating Regrets 00:48 1. Falling for the “Instagram Boat” 02:09 2. After weeks of heavy boat work in the yard—and a visa overstay to prove it—we were more than ready to get moving again. Before casting off, Darroch treated everyone on Rebak Island to a surprisingly captivating talk about ants (yes, ants!), turning a simple island hangout into a mini nature lesson. Once we finally left Malaysia, we took a moment to dive into the traditional process of making rice and wrapped up all the checkout formalities before setting sail for Thailand. Reaching a cool Thai island felt like the perfect reward, and celebrating the crossing with our friends from Best Life Sailing made it even better. A bit of science, a lot of boat work, new experiences, and the joy of finally moving on—this episode has a little of everything. #yelken #teknedeyaşam #macera #gezi #panama #bakımonarım #teknebakımı ———————————————————————————- Follow us on Instagram /basak mireli To see where we are https://share.garmin.c...
