In this episode, I tackle a full cooling system service on my boat engine — starting with the raw water (seawater) side, and finishing with the coolant system. What started as “just a quick visit” to the boat turned into: Replacing raw water hoses Flushing the seawater cooling circuit Replacing exhaust hoses Draining the coolant Emptying the water heater lines Refilling and topping up the cooling system All of this while working full-time and preparing for a work trip to Amsterdam. This is real boat ownership — not a marina fantasy. Things take time. Access is tight. Nothing is ever just five minutes. If you own a sailboat or powerboat with an inboard diesel engine, this is a real-world look at maintaining both sides of the cooling system: The raw water (sea) circuit The closed-loop coolant system Step by step. After work. Bit by bit. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 The plan: full cooling system service 01:04 Replacing raw water hoses 03:59 Flushing the seawater system 05:52 Exhaust hose replacement 11:15 First engine test – checking water flow 14:57 Draining the coolant 17:23 Emptying water heater lines 20:03 Refilling the cooling system 21:38 Quick interior trim replacement 22:49 What’s next: oil, diesel & belt 🔧 WHAT’S NEXT Engine oil change Diesel filter replacement Belt replacement Final engine run & coolant level check #BoatMaintenance #BoatEngine #MarineDiesel #RawWaterCooling #CoolingSystem #BoatLife #SailingLife #DIYBoat #ExhaustHose #EngineService #BoatOwnership Special thanks to Xavi Villanueva Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFuWfLVgIBL6JzolbRqefXw/join
JM disassembles, diagnosis, and tries to repair the motors for the automatic greenhouse vents. He discovers that they overheated, burnt up, and melted the windings. Luckily replacements can be ordered. Now he needs to adjust the limit switch system to prevent this from happening again. #greenhouse #electrical #broken #diy #workshop
We have 86 days left of our 100 day to launch challenge. Despite many heavy hail showers we made great progress. Both forecabin windows are fully bolted in. The first forward heads window is fully dry fitted. The boards to hold in the insulation are marked. Also we have had a big clear up and the forecabin is full as organised storage. We are now living aboard our Rival 38 Centre Cockpit full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. We have a frequently updated blog at https://sustainablesailing.net with membership options and a weekly newsletter at £2 per month for Early Bird Supporters. Our free Sustainable Sailing book is at: https://sustainablesailing.codeberg.page/ Or visit our shop at https://sustainablesailing.teemill.com/ for great hoodies, t-shirts and bags. When we bought Vida in August 2019 she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all-electric (motor, cooking etc). Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail. EPISODE 334 We're back from Australia, the cook hook is installed, and we're heading deeper into Fiji's outer islands. But this episode isn't about big projects or dramatic sailing. It's about the everyday life aboard our sailboat that we don't always show. Living on a boat full time means doing all the same things you do at home: laundry, meal prep, cleaning, maintenance. Just a little differently. When you're planning to be in remote anchorages for weeks without access to a grocery store, food preservation becomes essential. Bananas and pineapples get cut up and frozen. Fresh produce gets organized and prioritized. We have a washing machine on the boat (yes, really). Laundry day looks pretty similar to life on land, just with more salt air and sunshine. Instead of mowing the lawn, I polish stainless steel to combat the constant salt spray. Instead of running to the hardware store, Warren works through his ongoing maintenance list: checking systems, keeping everything running smoothly. We're the same as everyone else, really. We just happen to be doing it on a sailboat in the middle of the Pacific during cyclone season. And that means being strategic about where we anchor, balancing the desire to explore remote islands with the need for protected anchorages if the weather turns. This is what a normal week looks like for us. The routines, the chores, the systems that keep our floating home comfortable and functional when we're miles from civilization. Not every week is flying to Australia to build boat parts. Most weeks are just... this. The day-to-day life that keeps everything working. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ⚓ Thanks for watching! Give it a thumbs up if you liked this episode! Boat finally at the new yard, customs still dragging, and somehow we end up testing a gloriously dodgy kite-cam setup in 35-knot gusts. 😅⛵🪁 In this episode of Sailing into Freedom, I head out to the new factory on the edge of Saigon to check on hull 2 and the long-delayed imported gear that’s still trapped in paperwork limbo. It’s a huge moment seeing the boat in her new home at last – a peaceful, green shipyard surrounded by waterways and rice fields – and knowing the real work can finally restart. Then things go full Sailing into Freedom: I rig up a homemade kite camera mount, use a bit of beach foam and some quick maths to fix the camera angle, and immediately discover what happens when impatience, gusty wind and bad ideas meet offshore. There’s also a brutally honest take on GoPro vs DJI Osmo Action, based on actual use in kitesurfing and underwater filming – no fluff, just what failed and what worked. If you’re into catamaran builds, sailing vlogs, DIY boatyard problem-solving, kiteboarding camera setups, and real-world gear reviews from someone who actually abuses the equipment, this one’s for you. #sailing #sailingintofreedom #catamaran #boatbuilding #kitesurfing #actioncamera #gopro #djiosmo #sailingvlog #liveaboard Get your Sailing Into Freedom Crew T-shirt: https://teespring.com/stores/sailing-into-freedom Want more? A Seawind 1260 Circumnavigation A story from a European couple who set out with big sailing goals and a brand new Seawind 1260, inspiring those who dare to dream... If you're wondering "could this be us?" ...then this interview is for you. Klaus and Andrea didn’t grow up crossing oceans. Before taking delivery of their Seawind 1260 in Vietnam in 2022, their sailing background was limited to short seasonal trips and sailing charters. Yet they made a bold decision: Set sail around the world and place their trust in a proven vessel designed to be a silent partner through the steap learning curve they were taking on. Perhaps what they lacked in years of sailing experience, they made up for in planning, preparation, persistence, teamwork, and ultimate confidence in the platform beneath them. This is not “fun in the sun” cruising. This is real bluewater sailing and a reminder that you don’t need to be born an ocean sailor to become one when you have big dreams, the right mindset and the right boat to turn it all into reality. If you’ve been dreaming about offshore passages but questioning whether you’re ready enough, this story might be the perspective you need. It proves that with the right partner on the water, the transition from coastal dreamer to global explorer is within your reach. In this episode of our sailboat refit, we tackle the prep work for installing new LED lighting throughout the boat, and like most projects on a refit, it turned into more work than expected. To start, we removed two stainless steel light strips in the salon—each holding eight fixtures—and enlarged every mounting hole to fit the new lights. For this, we tried a new tool: a Vevor punch-out tool, which made quick, clean work of resizing the holes and turned out to be a game changer for this kind of job. From there, we worked our way around the perimeter of the salon, widening additional light cutouts and even removing a hanging cabinet to gain access and properly modify the openings. With the holes prepped, we installed new wire harnesses throughout the interior, setting the stage for a clean and reliable lighting system. The cockpit lights got the same treatment, where we used fish tape to run new wiring through tight spaces. The most challenging part of the entire project was feeding wires for the salon’s perimeter lights—tight, hard-to-reach areas that required patience, a flexible fish tape, and a grabber tool to finally get everything in place. This episode is a real look at the behind-the-scenes work required for upgrading sailboat lighting, including cutting, wiring, and problem-solving in confined spaces. It’s not glamorous, but it’s a critical step toward making the boat feel functional, comfortable, and liveable again. With all wiring run and holes prepped, and new LED lights installed, we’re finally ready to reinstall the ceiling panels and bring the interior back together—and that’s a huge milestone after months of teardown. If you’re into sailboat refits, marine electrical projects, DIY boat upgrades, or LED lighting installs, this episode walks through the process, tools, and lessons learned along the way. ⛵💡 00:00 Intro to project 00:33 Channel intro 00:51 Remove stainless steel sheets 01:19 Vevor punch-out tool 04:23 Enlarge holes in wood supports 06:22 Prep lights for installation 07:59 Build wiring harnesses 09:01 Reinstall stainless steel sheets 12:20 Overhead cabinet holes and wires 15:39 Enlarge holes for perimeter lights 17:09 Fish wires through perimeter and cockpit ceiling 18:30 Install lights 19:49 test lights 21:23 Wrap up 22:02 Like, Subscribe, Emoji, Bye! 22:23 End Card ☝More about us, our adventures, and how we do all this on our website.More about Roam here ⛵️https://sailingroam.com/our-sailboat/ 📲 Keep up with us on social FACEBOOK: https://facebook.com/sgsailingroam INSTAGRAM: https://instagram.com/sailing_roam ----------------------------------------------------------- WE'RE GERI AND SHAWN. Boat life isn’t always turquoise water and smooth sailing… sometimes it’s project after project 😅 In this episode, we tackle a long list of upgrades and repairs—finishing our epoxy countertop, varnishing the fridge top and installing a new gasket, making new dinghy cushions, repairing our headsail, cleaning the heat exchanger, and even bringing our water pump in to get fixed. But it’s not all work. We take breaks to enjoy life in Luperón—horseback riding along Playa Grande, swimming at Playa Chiquita, exploring local restaurants, and celebrating Christmas with friends 🎄 And the best surprise? Our buddy boat finally shows up in Luperón, making it all feel a little more like home. Every builder should appreciate a traditional Kiridashi marking knife. In this video on The Art of Boat Building, I step away from the hull and into the workshop to craft a traditional Kiridashi marking knife. Starting with raw steel, I walk through the full process of shaping, grinding, heat treating, and sharpening this deceptively simple but incredibly precise tool. The kiridashi has long been valued for its clean, accurate lines perfect for joinery, layout work, and the kind of detail that defines true craftsmanship. This build isn’t just about making a knife it’s about honoring the tools that make fine work possible. Whether you’re building boats, furniture, or anything in between, the right marking tool can elevate your accuracy and your results. If you enjoy craftsmanship, hand tools, and the process behind the build, you’re in the right place. “If you’re going to make it, make it beautiful.” Bob Emser As an advocate for backyard boat builders I offer a free 30 minute chat about your project. Leaping Into Lithium: https://www.practical-sailor.com/marine-electronics/leaping-into-lithium/ Lithium batteries are one of the most popular sailboat upgrades today—but they’re also one of the most misunderstood. In this Practical Sailor Saturday episode, we break down the three biggest mistakes sailors make when installing lithium batteries on sailboats, and why these errors can lead to damaged alternators, shortened battery life, and unexpected electrical failures. This is not a lithium sales pitch. It’s a reality check. We cover: • Why lithium batteries are not a drop-in replacement for lead-acid or AGM • How lithium charging can silently destroy alternators and regulators • Why cold-weather charging permanently damages lithium batteries • The truth about Battery Management Systems (BMS) and what they really protect • When lithium makes sense—and when it absolutely doesn’t If you’re considering a lithium upgrade, already have lithium on your boat, or are trying to decide between lithium and AGM, this video will help you avoid expensive mistakes and design a safer, more reliable electrical system. Topics sailors are searching for: lithium batteries on sailboats lithium vs AGM marine batteries sailboat electrical systems marine lithium battery mistakes alternator overheating lithium boat battery upgrades Subscribe for more Practical Sailor videos focused on real-world boat ownership, maintenance, and systems—without the marketing hype. A Ferrari engine for my sailboat? Not really. But the transformation Celina´s engine has gone through is amazing. Countless parts were corroded and the work I put into this engine was a lot. Air grinders, sand blasters, hot air guns and lots of Coca Cola helped to make this engine shine again. #sailing #bluewatersailing #diy #sailboatrestoration #blauwassersegeln #segeln #sailingaroundtheworld
It’s haul-out time for ARGO. In this episode we lift ARGO out of the water and onto the hard stand for her annual maintenance. After a good power wash, Jason gets started on what should have been a simple job – changing the sail drive oil. But things quickly take a turn. When the oil comes out milky, it’s a sign every boat owner dreads – water has entered the sail drive, and that usually means an expensive repair. Thankfully we find a fantastic marine mechanic on site who helps track down the problem and get things sorted. While he’s at it, we finally solve a nagging issue we’ve been having with the anodes. Not exactly the start we planned for this haul out… but that’s boat life. In the next episode the real work begins – Jason takes on sanding the hulls himself in preparation for antifoul and Prop Speed. The pressure is on to get a professional result. Thanks for watching. Facing the challenges of solo sailing as a female sailor, I navigated the highs and lows of single-handed sailing while tackling DIY boat repair projects, from engine fixes to full boat refits on a budget. My life aboard was a mix of adventure and reflection, shaping an independent woman’s story of resilience, personal growth, and embracing the sailing lifestyle. Along the way, I became an ocean conservation activist with In Mocean, stumbled across my dog Boga, and discovered the joys and challenges of sailing with a dog. Now, I’m exploring a new chapter, having jumped aboard my partner’s Hallberg Rassy Rasmus with Boga and his Australian Kelpie, Jango. Together, we face the unique dynamics and challenges of sailing as a couple, balancing off-grid life, sustainable sailing, and the demands of long-term cruising. If you’re interested in remote sailing adventures, authentic sailing stories, and the realities of living on a sailboat, this channel offers a glimpse into the world of DIY projects, the sailing lifestyle, and life’s transformative moments on the water. Hi and welcome aboard @SailingAstridTheWombat We are Gav and Shezz and two and a half years ago we bought our Beneteau Oceanis 430 sailboat with absolutely no sailing experience and jumped straight into the deep end of liveaboard sailing. Our very first passage was just over 700 nautical miles, launching us headfirst into the world of bluewater cruising, learning to sail, and real life at sea. Since that moment, we’ve been fully immersed in boat life, documenting the journey of turning a production cruising sailboat into a capable, self-sufficient home as we prepare for full-time liveaboard life. From major sailboat upgrades and off-grid power systems to everyday maintenance and skills building, we’re learning what it truly takes to own, sail, and live on a boat while working toward our goal of sailing around the world. If you’re into sailing adventures, beginner sailing, sailboat ownership, cruising lifestyle, and traveling the world by sailboat, our journey is all about real-time learning, ocean freedom, and building the confidence to chase long-term world cruising under sail. In this episode of our liveaboard sailing life, things take an unexpected turn when a routine check leads to a sudden skin cancer diagnosis on my lip. What followed was extensive skin cancer surgery that we never saw coming while living aboard our sailboat. Life as liveaboard sailors preparing to sail around the world is usually filled with adventure, sailing, and freedom—but sometimes the journey throws challenges your way that you simply have to face head-on. Join us as we share this very real and personal chapter of our liveaboard sailing journey. From the shock of hearing the diagnosis, to undergoing skin cancer removal surgery, and finally returning to the boat for recovery, this episode shows the less talked about side of the off-grid sailing lifestyle. Living on a sailboat means adapting quickly, and recovering from surgery while continuing liveaboard boat life definitely tested us. While most of our channel focuses on sailing adventures, cruising life, and preparing our sailboat for long-term world travel, this video highlights how health and real life still happen even when you live on the water. We talk openly about the experience, the surgery, and what recovery looks like when your home is a liveaboard sailboat instead of a house on land. If you love sailing channels, cruising vlogs, liveaboard sailing lifestyle videos, and sailboat life content, this episode gives an honest behind-the-scenes look at life beyond the highlights. Whether you're a beginner sailor dreaming of living on a sailboat, an experienced cruiser, or someone planning sailing around the world, this is part of the reality of pursuing an adventurous life. Our channel follows our journey as liveaboard sailors preparing to sail around the world, upgrading our boat for off-grid sailing, installing solar systems, exploring anchorages, and sharing the everyday ups and downs of sailboat living. From sailing adventures and cruising destinations to boat projects and life lessons, we document the full experience of chasing the dream of world cruising by sailboat. If you enjoy content about liveaboard sailing, cruising life, sailboat adventures, off-grid boat living, and preparing a sailboat for long-distance cruising, make sure to subscribe and follow along as we continue our journey. Topics in this episode include: • Skin cancer diagnosis and surgery • Recovering from surgery while living on a sailboat • Real life challenges of the liveaboard sailing lifestyle • Preparing for sailing around the world • Behind the scenes of off-grid sailboat living Join us as we navigate both the challenges and the adventures of liveaboard sailing life while continuing to chase our dream of sailing around the world. We want to show step by step what it takes to choose a boat, buy the boat and learn how to sail. Our sailing learning curve is steep so come along with us as we learn and grow as liveaboard sailors. Link: https://balancecatamarans.com/design-for-safety/ The episode discusses key safety priorities in catamaran design, emphasizing the need to balance comfort, livability, and performance with strength and engineering details. It highlights ergonomics and visibility as critical, noting that collisions are the top global cause of marine accidents and often result from poor sightlines, so Balance focuses on visibility to all four corners and the horizon. The conversation explains safety-driven choices like a single helm station for efficient reefing, tacking, jibing, and line management; safer movement via minimal trip hazards, tall stanchions with three lines, and ample handholds; reduced deck clutter such as avoiding hatches in walking areas; and clear side-deck passageways. Additional features include emergency tiller systems, an A-frame mainsheet for safer boom control versus travelers, and keeping the boom low for easier sail handling, aided by adjustable biminis and serviceable system access planned from the start. 00:00 Safety Design Overview 00:33 Balancing Comfort Performance 01:08 Ergonomics and Helm Layout 01:31 Visibility and Sightlines 02:09 Single Helm Sail Handling 02:42 Safe Deck Movement 04:11 Rigging and Emergency Systems 04:57 Boom Height and Bimini Access 05:59 Maintenance Access by Design Link: https://balancecatamarans.com/design-for-safety/ Catamaran Conversations with Patrick Shaughnessy: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_ZKlaZSmtsRpY6CxjveL9BKi5k3mQwkx
Starting window frames. Countdown 92 of 100 days to Boat Launch Challenge #BoatRefit #DIY #Challenge
A big start on the interior window frames. Worked on the two for the forecabin and preparation for others. This should stop the gel coat crazing by adding stiffness. Plus it edges and supports the insulation. We are now living aboard our Rival 38 Centre Cockpit full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. We have a frequently updated blog at https://sustainablesailing.net with membership options and a weekly newsletter at £2 per month for Early Bird Supporters. When we bought Vida in August 2019 she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). A $2,000 boat part. Weeks of waiting. Shipping to Fiji. Or... fly to Australia and build it ourselves. In this episode, we make the call that makes no sense on paper — and ends up being one of the best decisions we've made this season. Warren and Erica leave SV VA safely at a marina in Fiji and fly to Australia for a week of hands-on boat building, exploration, and time with two of the most legendary people in the sailing world: Brian and Karin from Sailing Delos. The mission: build a custom aluminium part from scratch in the Delos boatyard — the same yard where Delos 2.0, one of the most ambitious custom aluminium sailboat builds in cruising history, is taking shape. Warren gets his hands dirty with scrap aluminium and comes home with a part that costs less, fits better, and comes with a story. Sometimes the DIY solution isn't just about the money. It's about the experience, the community, and turning a boat problem into an international adventure. 🎯 WHAT'S IN THIS EPISODE: – Why we flew to Australia instead of ordering a $2,000 boat part – Behind the scenes of the Sailing Delos 2.0 custom aluminium build – Warren building a custom boat part from scratch in the Delos boatyard – A week of exploring Australia while VA waits in Fiji – How the cruising community solves problems together 📍 LOCATIONS: Fiji (SV VA) → Australia (Delos boatyard) 🔔 New episodes every Wednesday @WEsail 💛 Support us: patreon.com/WEsail #SailingDelos #Delos2.0 #BoatDIY #SailingAustralia #CustomBoatBuild #AluminiumBoat #CruisingLife #SailingFiji #LiveaboardLife #BoatBuilding #WEsail #SailingCouple #DIYBoat #BoatProjects #CruisingWorld ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ⚓ Thanks for watching! Outboard Motor Won’t Start? Check These 5 Silly Mistakes FIRST! (Kill Switch, Vent & More) Frustrated with an outboard motor that just won’t start? Before you call a mechanic or tear apart the carburetor, watch this! In this video, we cover 5 common, seemingly silly mistakes that can prevent your boat engine from starting. These are simple oversights that even experienced boaters make from time to time, but they have the power to ruin your day on the water. We’ve all been there – pulling the starter rope until your arm hurts, only to realize it was one of these quick-fix problems. Don’t worry; we’ll show you exactly how to identify and solve them in seconds. In this video, we explain: Error 1: The Kill Switch Lanyard – Why a partially attached clip means no spark and no ignition. (Hint: It's not about how hard you pull!) Error 2: The Fuel Tank Vent Screw – Physics for the clueless! Why your engine can't 'eat' if your tank can't 'breathe.' Error 3: The Primer Bulb (The Art of Priming) – Pumping gasoline isn't magic. Learn how to feel when the bulb is properly firm. Error 4: The Choke – Mastering the cold start. Why your carbureted outboard needs that little pull knob to get the right fuel mixture. Error 5: The Fuel Valve (Fuel Cock) – The frustrating 'run and die' scenario. Don’t forget to open the fuel cock! Save time, money, and headaches by checking these basic steps first. Don't be the boater lifting weights on the dock while everyone else leaves! --- 0:00 - Introduction: 5 Silly Starting Mistakes 0:19 - Error 1: Kill Switch Lanyard 0:47 - Error 2: Fuel Tank Vent Screw 1:18 - Error 3: Primer Bulb & Priming 1:39 - Error 4: The Choke (Cold Starts) 2:07 - Error 5: The Fuel Valve/Cock 2:25 - Conclusion & Final Tips Have any of these happened to you? We really struggle with applying fibreglass to the underside of things, especially when the shapes are awkward and space is tight. So today was difficult but is done - glassing in the the new deck beam to strengthen the bulkhead where for the inner forestay and windlass loads. Building a DIY 47' plywood and epoxy catamaran in the beautiful city of Toyama, Japan.
We needed a $2,000 boat part. Instead of ordering it, we flew to Australia, visited our friends building Delos 2.0, and Warren made his own.
