If you’re interested in joining a sailing experience on the frigate Shtandart, you can find different options on their website: https://shtandart.eu They take volunteers, trainees, and also regular participants for voyages. There are also opportunities to take part in ship maintenance when the vessel is in port. This video is probably the one I worked on the longest before releasing it. I had to rewrite it many times because I really wanted to capture what I felt during that week, but every version kept coming out too cheesy) It’s not easy to talk about something powerful without it turning sentimental. The moment you try to put it into words, it easily becomes too much. But I hope, I've found the right words🙂 See you soon! We get the aft solar in and working, then we take it apart to upgrade the leg articulation. It's close to awesome! After years of planning we are well into building the ultimate solar panel installation for an electric yacht conversion with a narrow stern and a mizzen to make it more difficult. We are now living aboard our Rival 38 Centre Cockpit full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. We have a frequently updated blog at https://sustainablesailing.net with membership options and a weekly newsletter at £2 per month for Early Bird Supporters. Our free Sustainable Sailing book is at: https://sustainablesailing.codeberg.page/ Or visit our shop at https://sustainablesailing.teemill.com/ for great hoodies, t-shirts and bags. When we bought Vida in August 2019 she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all-electric (motor, cooking etc). In this episode, I roll my 2010 Precision 18 pocket cruiser "Mandatory Fun" out of storage for the first time in over 8 months. I brought the boat home from the marina in mid-September, and she's spent the off-season in the garage. During our long and unseasonably warm Fall, I day-sailed our 1987 Precision 16 sailing dinghy "Boondoggle". The boat gets surprisingly dirty just sitting in the garage. The area where we live is very windy and there's a ton of blowing dirt and dust that gets into everything. This episode covers all the basics of preparing the boat to be rolled out, removing scuffs and scratches, applying UV protectant to plastic and nylon parts, protecting the window gaskets with rubber seal conditioner, vacuuming out the cabin, scrubbing the cabin sole, and charging all the batteries. It's been over three months since I decided to pull the plug on YouTube. To be honest, I've really enjoyed the break. Stepping away from the constant cycle of filming, editing, publishing, and trying to appease ever-changing algorithms has been incredibly liberating. For the first time in a long while, I was able to simply enjoy our journey without feeling the pressure to document every moment or turn every experience into content. During that time, I've done a lot of reflecting. And I've come to realise that while I no longer want YouTube to dictate how we live our lives, I do still want to share this adventure. So, I've decided to start creating content again. That said, things will be very different moving forward. I want to be upfront about that from the outset. I will never allow YouTube to consume the amount of time, energy, or headspace that it once did. I won't let it take away from my happiness, interfere with our family life, or distract me from the very experiences we set out to have in the first place. My family will always be my number one priority. Brendan and I both work remotely to fund this lifestyle and continue our journey towards completing our circumnavigation. Between work commitments, homeschooling, boat maintenance, passage planning, and simply living life aboard, our time is precious. I hope our loyal followers, family, and friends understand that reality. I won't be chasing algorithms, obsessing over views, or feeling pressured to maintain an upload schedule. I won't be a slave to YouTube, nor will I spend my days constantly plugging our channel or social media platforms. What I will do is continue sharing our journey—warts and all. The good days, the difficult days, the unexpected challenges, the breathtaking anchorages, the family victories, and the occasional mistakes. The real story. Because at the heart of it all, that's why we started creating these videos in the first place. Yes, I love connecting with those of you who have followed our adventure and supported us over the years. But I also want our children to be able to look back one day and relive this incredible chapter of their lives. This journey has required enormous sacrifice from all of us, and these video logs have become a record of memories that can never be replaced. So, while content will likely be less frequent and perhaps a little less polished than before, it will be genuine, sustainable, and created on our terms. Thank you to everyone who has continued to support us, even during our silence. Your messages, encouragement, and patience have meant more than you know. We're not finished with this adventure just yet. So, if you'd like to come along for the ride, strap yourselves in. I'm picking up right where we left off—in the mighty Maroni River, French Guiana. The journey continues. Onwards and upwards, Sarah x

The end of a sailing season is always emotional. Saying goodbye to friends at the Marina. Preparing the boat for its last voyage of the season. And beginning to re-think through the process of stripping the boat down and getting it ready for indoor winter storage. Come along for our final ride of the 2025 season and begin the process of preparing BOOMERANG for the upcoming winter season. Again, we really do appreciate that you've taken the time to watch this video. Thank you. And again, we could use a little help with our views. This 2004 Zodiac Hurricane inflatable with a jet drive is an exceptional vessel for exploring the rugged and remote wilderness of British Columbia. Built with military-grade durability, its heavy-duty Hypalon tubes and rigid hull offer strength, buoyancy, and safety even in unpredictable coastal or river conditions. The compact design allows easy trailering and launching from remote beaches, forest access points, or shallow tidal creeks that larger boats can’t reach. The jet drive propulsion delivers outstanding maneuverability and safety in shallow or debris-filled waters such as estuaries, glacial rivers, and inlet backchannels. Without an exposed propeller, it can glide over submerged logs or rocky shoals that define much of BC’s wild coastline and freshwater systems. This makes it ideal for wilderness photographers, anglers, or adventurers seeking hidden coves and untouched terrain. Lightweight yet incredibly stable, the Zodiac handles swells and chop efficiently, while its fast planing performance reduces travel time between remote anchorages. The simple, low-draft setup also requires minimal maintenance compared to traditional boats. Whether navigating the misty fjords of the North Coast, the salmon-rich rivers of Haida Gwaii, or the serene stillness of Desolation Sound, the 2004 Zodiac Hurricane jet offers unmatched versatility and confidence in Canada’s wild waters. The pontoons have recently been serviced in 2022, with new VHF, AIS, chart plotter and radar in 2022 as well. Boat also includes a triple access trailer. On the move to find a swimming spot, we head South & wait out the front of Lefkas for the bridge to open. We are near the front of the pack and pass so many boats coming from the opposite direction. Lilah and I paddle over the the beach where goats have gathered and Hugh is surrounded by hundreds of fish off the back of the boat. A little hop to the next spot for some minor boat maintenance, ending with the kids celebrating Shane for Fathers Day. Want early access to our videos? In this episode, we continue our Boatyard Blues series as Te Tāiko’s rudder rebuild enters its final stages. After discovering significant corrosion in our rudder stock, what began as a routine maintenance haul-out turned into one of our most stressful boat repairs we’ve faced since setting sail through the South Pacific. Join us as we make progress on the new rudder stock, complete electrical continuity testing to ensure the rudder is connected to a sacrificial anode for corrosion protection, continue antifouling the hull, reinstall the rudder, and prepare for splash day. Behind every ocean passage, remote anchorage, and new destination is the maintenance, planning, and problem-solving that keeps a cruising yacht safe and seaworthy. Before you list it on YachtWorld, Boat Trader, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or with a yacht broker, there are several things you should do first if you want your boat to sell faster and avoid losing thousands during survey and negotiation. In this Practical Sailor episode, we walk through a complete sailboat seller’s checklist, including how to price your used sailboat, whether to sell privately or use a broker, what paperwork and maintenance records to gather, what to clean, what to fix, how to prepare for survey and sea trial, and how to write a better boat-for-sale listing that builds buyer confidence. Whether you’re selling a Catalina, Hunter, Beneteau, Jeanneau, Island Packet, Tartan, C&C, Pearson, Sabre, or any other used cruising sailboat, this guide will help you prepare your boat before it goes on the market. We cover sailboat staging, decluttering, engine presentation, bilge cleaning, listing photos, disclosure, survey issues, price negotiation, included gear, and closing paperwork so buyers know exactly what they’re looking at. If you’re getting ready to sell a sailboat, list a used boat, work with a yacht broker, or prepare for a marine survey, this checklist will help you make the boat easier to trust, easier to inspect, and easier to buy. Practical Sailor is your trusted resource for reviews of sailboats and sailing gear. https://www.practical-sailor.com Chat with us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/PracticalSailor/

Hi and welcome aboard @SailingAstridTheWombat We are Gav and Shezz and two and a half years ago we bought our Beneteau Oceanis 430 sailboat with absolutely no sailing experience and jumped straight into the deep end of liveaboard sailing. Our very first passage was just over 700 nautical miles, launching us headfirst into the world of bluewater cruising, learning to sail, and real life at sea. Since that moment, we’ve been fully immersed in boat life, documenting the journey of turning a production cruising sailboat into a capable, self-sufficient home as we prepare for full-time liveaboard life. From major sailboat upgrades and off-grid power systems to everyday maintenance and skills building, we’re learning what it truly takes to own, sail, and live on a boat while working toward our goal of sailing around the world. If you’re into sailing adventures, beginner sailing, sailboat ownership, cruising lifestyle, and traveling the world by sailboat, our journey is all about real-time learning, ocean freedom, and building the confidence to chase long-term world cruising under sail. As liveaboard sailors preparing for full-time cruising, this boat show visit was more than just a fun day out. We were on a mission to gather information, advice, and parts to finally get our water maker system up and running on our sailboat. Reliable fresh water production is one of the most important systems for long-term liveaboard life, offshore sailing, and world cruising, so we dive deep into the world of marine desalination, water maker maintenance, and boat systems while speaking with experts at the show. If you love sailing, boats, cruising, yacht life, liveaboard living, or dream of travelling the world by sailboat, this episode is packed with inspiration, useful information, and an inside look at one of the top international boat shows in the boating industry. ► A graduate of Sciences Po Paris, 31-year-old Nicolas Marcillaud could have become a senior civil servant… but in the end, it was his taste for adventure, combined with a strong fascination for ice, that led the young man toward a particularly ambitious project: sailing around the Arctic. ► In other words, a mini circumnavigation of 9,000 miles by linking the Northwest Passage and the Northeast Passage. Each route has already been sailed individually, but never both in a single season. That is precisely the challenge Nicolas has taken on. ► With a set of specifications requiring the ability to beach the boat - or even haul it onto the ice - while still prioritizing seaworthiness for ocean crossings, light-air performance, and ease of maintenance, the adventurer chose Paradox, a 10-meter trimaran. Extremely light (2 tons) and minimalist (no engine), this multihull was built in 1997. We discovered her at the end of a refit in Hennebont, near Lorient. Nicolas opted to reuse numerous components to reduce costs, of course, but also as part of an environmentally conscious approach. ► After an initial trial voyage in the ice this summer, Paradox will set off again in 2027 to complete her sailing circumnavigation of the polar world. ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! To get a quote for your yacht or boat from Keane Specialty Insurance: https://keanespecialty.com/get-a-quote?pid=DSY And to see the podcast with Toni Clarke of Keane Specialty: https://youtu.be/l15GZ4BrgNA Is yachting actually dangerous? It’s a question that tends to surface whenever dramatic footage appears online, fires, groundings, collisions, yachts making headlines for all the wrong reasons. But what does that really tell us about the industry as a whole? In this episode, we step back from the noise and look at the bigger picture behind yacht safety. Not boating, but yachting. The world of professionally run vessels, trained crew, structured procedures, and serious ownership standards. We look at how incidents are reported and why visibility often distorts perception. We also compare large yacht operations with other transport industries and consider what the available data actually suggests about risk at this level. Along the way, we touch on what really matters onboard: crew experience, maintenance, decision-making, and the relationship between owner and captain. If you are thinking about yacht ownership, or simply follow the industry closely, this is a useful lens through which to view the conversation. In this episode, I sail back from the shallow north end of Eleven Mile Canyon Reservoir in central Colorado where I was repeatedly fouled by Eurasian water milfoil (an invasive aquatic plant species). As I'm making my way back to the marina, a storm comes in and the winds really pick up. The wind shifts to the south, so I end up sailing to windward double-reefed which is challenging and slow. But it was an exciting sail with large waves (for a lake) and whitecaps. Teak rubrail restoration happens in this video...and then adding some bling! The bling is of course her stainless rubrail, which is fixed atop her teak! We began this project approx 25months ago, with our dear friend Jason. We HAD to remove her rubrails to access her chainplate bolts...remember? Well, in this episode we wrap that up, it has been a LONG time coming! @FishUnderSail We touch base at the end of the episode, and a "Cockpit Confession" is coming soon!

Making the frame for our sliding solar panels lighter. Also yesterdays dinghy adventure was more exiting than we anticipated. After years of planning we are well into building the ultimate solar panel installation for an electric yacht conversion with a narrow stern and a mizzen to make it more difficult. We are now living aboard our Rival 38 Centre Cockpit full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. Before the epoxy, before the stain, before the water, there is the fairing. That long, quiet conversation between the builder and the hull. As a sculptor I've always felt more at home reading a surface with my hands than my eyes. The block plane finding its voice, the rhythm of the longboard, the moment when the tool disappears and there's nothing left but the wood telling you the truth about itself. 1,800 miles from the nearest road, my autopilot exploded into pieces on my lap. Three and a half days into an 18-day crossing from Ecuador to Easter Island, on a light catamaran with small rudders and no displacement, the wheel pilot's ring snapped, the belt cut itself in four places, and the ball bearings went everywhere. No bailout. No spare. Pitcairn was 1,200 miles west. Antarctica was south. We had to make it work with what was on board. This technique is explained in detail in chapter 6E of my book: https://bethecaptain.com/ This is the story of how bungee cords got us to Easter Island, and how a decommissioned road sign got us out of it. In this video, I break down: - What actually failed on the ST4000 wheel pilot, and why it failed in benign conditions - The fiberglass repair attempt that worked for three hours before exploding again - Sheet-to-tiller theory and why it doesn't translate directly to a light cat - The bungee-cord rudder balance technique I've now used on every boat I've owned since - Why I always carry four new bungee cords in the package on every passage - The Easter Island repair: clamping a linear drive arm to the rudder shaft using a road sign from the Department of Transportation, fire hose, and a homemade quadrant - The mindset shift that turns a catastrophic failure into a win The bungee technique is written up in full in Chapter 6E of Be The Captain. If you want the diagrams and the step-by-step on how to tune it for your own boat, grab the book: https://bethecaptain.com Coming next: the full Ecuador to Easter Island passage breakdown — routing, weather, the seven anchorages, check-in procedure, and what to bring. Subscribe so you're there when it drops. Lessons from this one: 1. Carry a real autopilot. Wheel pilots are not offshore gear. 2. Bungee cords, fire hose, and an open mind solve more problems than spare parts. 3. Sit with the problem. The solution is always there. You just have to think. 4. Ask for help. The cruising community runs on it. This week Impavidus comes out of the water for the usual haul-out jobs — cleaning back the Coppercoat, polishing the topsides and checking everything underneath the boat. But while inspecting the underwater gear, we discovered something that genuinely surprised me. One set of anodes was disappearing far faster than expected… and the reason turned out to be something I suspect many saildrive and shaft-drive owners may never even have considered. In this video we look at: ⚓ Saildrive and propeller anodes ⚓ Zinc vs aluminium anodes ⚓ Rope cutters and electrical continuity ⚓ Galvanic corrosion explained simply ⚓ Why some anodes disappear much faster than others ⚓ The importance of electrically isolated propellers We also explain how certain rope cutter and shaft arrangements can unintentionally create an electrical path between underwater components, dramatically changing how the protection system behaves. As always, this is a real-world investigation aboard SV Impavidus — practical engineering, diagnostics and problem-solving aboard a liveaboard cruising yacht. ⛵ Support the channel & get early ad-free access: Patreon: www.patreon.com/svimpavidus ☕ If you'd like to support the channel: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/svimpavidus #sailing #boatmaintenance #anodes #galvaniccorrosion #liveaboard #saildrive #boatwork #coppercoat #sailinglife Sail Safe Guys, Ant & Cid XX 🇬🇧 ⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️ =================================================== 👋 We’re Ant & Cid aboard SV Impavidus – two adventurers sailing full-time since 2018. Episode 269 From hardware headaches to mountain top views! ⛵️⛰️ This week, we’re in the stunning Whitsundays tackling a frustrating watermaker repair. Despite new parts and hours of work, it’s still not playing ball. To shake off the disappointment, we grab the bikes to explore the local town before setting sail for the islands. After two years of planning, fabricating, redesigning, and chasing down welders, our sailboat finally has a massive new solar arch—and we couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. In this episode of our catamaran refit, we install a custom stainless steel solar arch capable of supporting 4 x 575W bifacial solar panels, plus an additional two panels mounted on the coach roof for a total of 3,450 watts of solar power onboard. Getting to this point was anything but easy. We had three different welders flake out on us before finally finding someone willing to take on the project for a reasonable price. By the end, we were deeply involved in the build ourselves—designing the arch, cutting and fitting the stainless supports, and acting as the welder’s extra hands throughout the fabrication process. This wasn’t a simple bolt-on project. We handled all the heavy lifting ourselves and completed the installation without any help from the boatyard. Along the way, we also: Reused and integrated the original safety rails Added a cockpit shower and foot wash Built a strong, clean structure capable of supporting serious off-grid power generation The final result completely transformed the back of the boat. Not only does the arch look incredible, but it’s also a huge step toward our goal of building a fully self-sufficient cruising catamaran capable of running comfortably without relying on marinas or a generator. This project has been nearly two years in the making, and finally seeing the solar array mounted and complete feels like a massive milestone in our sailboat refit journey. If you’re into: Sailboat refits DIY boat projects Off-grid solar systems Catamaran upgrades Liveaboard cruising preparation Marine electrical systems …this episode is packed with real-world fabrication, problem-solving, and major progress. ⛵ One step closer to sailing. 00:00 Recap countdown 00:31 The plan 00:43 Channel intro 01:01 Coach roof panels 01:35 Measure for new arch supports 05:13 Cutting stainless 07:40 Cleaning up 08:34 Yep, still cutting stainless 10:09 Polish and reuse safety rails 11:33 Welding Day(s) 12:33 Pulling wires 12:59 Raise the panels 13:54 Shower box 14:01 Wrap up 15:03 Like and subscribe 15:25 End card ☝More about us, our adventures, and how we do all this on our website.More about Roam here ⛵️https://sailingroam.com/our-sailboat/ 📲 Keep up with us on social FACEBOOK: https://facebook.com/sgsailingroam INSTAGRAM: https://instagram.com/sailing_roam ----------------------------------------------------------- WE'RE GERI AND SHAWN. Outboard or inboard? It’s one of the biggest decisions when spec’ing a Targa 32 or below, and in this video, Andrew Porter from East Coast Yacht Sales breaks down the real-world differences between both engine packages on a Targa 27.2 outboard & inboard boat. We take a detailed look at two 2026 Targa 27.2 models: • Twin Mercury 300 Outboards • Single Volvo D6 400 Diesel Inboard From swim platform usability and cockpit layout to engine room space, maintenance costs, cruising performance, fuel burn, efficiency, range, and overall ownership experience, this video compares how each setup completely changes the feel of the same boat.
