In this week's episode, the wind picks up and I get the boat moving fast under a double-reefed mainsail. After tooling around the lake under light winds for several hours in the morning, I was really glad to see the breeze start to pick up in the afternoon. In this video, I push the boat as far as I'm comfortable under full sails, and then briefly go hove-to to tuck in a double reef. I sailed for 4 hours under a double-reefed mainsail enjoying some strong and gusty breeze. The highest gust reported by the nearest weather station while I was out sailing was 26 mph. During this sail, I had no plan, no agenda, and no goals for the day. I just spent the day enjoying wherever the wind took me. Greece marked its fishing nets with something red or white. Sicily improvised — an oil jar, but at least an orange one. In Spain a fisherman once used a life jacket, and the coastguard went full rescue mode thinking somebody was in the water. Portugal uses a single green plastic water bottle, floating flat, invisible to the eye and too small for the radar to see. Portugal is the final boss. This is the week we crossed the border. We left Mazagón at eight in the morning, spent nine hours dodging fishing gear and watching for fins, and somewhere off the coast went from one country to the next — which mostly meant an hour back on the clock and a green-and-red flag going up at the spreader. Then the entrance to Faro, a channel with tides, not much water and a plotter reading single figures. Two days on Ilha do Farol, an island of white houses and a red-and-white striped lighthouse you can see from the anchorage. Then the run to Portimão, which is the one that needed thinking about: the best orca ground sits right there, and about a hundred metres inshore of it the chart goes to three metres, then one. There is no comfortable line. This is the day the catamaran earned its keep. And then the job this whole leg has been waiting for. Our watermaker has been dead since Spain — no showers for a week, buying drinking water ashore. The new pumps were shipped to a yard that said they could fit them and then said they couldn't, so I did it on the cockpit table: one pump full of corrosion with the bearing ring destroyed and the rotor chewed up, one still working and going into the spares box. At half past one in the afternoon the pressure came up to six, and fresh water came out of the tap. Next week we head out into the Atlantic for Porto Santo. Ever have trouble getting it up? Well, yeah we did. In preparation for our move to Texas, we are checking out all essential systems. One of those being our Lofrans Falcon 1700 watt windlass and maneuvering the anchor. The anchor deployed nicely but the windlass couldn’t get it up easily. More to diagnose, more to fix and to be continued. We’ve mounted our new Garmin 8610xsv chartplotter turning our cockpit into a starship helm. Just kidding, but it will be really nice having two chartplotters for obtaining cruising and weather information. Unfortunately, at first there was a bit of an issue with the NMEA 2000 network. Not all the devices were showing up on the chartplotters. After several lengthy diagnostic sessions, Steve figured out there appeared to have a ground loop. It’s all been corrected, all devices appearing on the chartplotters and they look great. The NMEA 2000 network also got a new look. Using two Garmin NMEA 2000 4-Port T-connectors several single T-connectors were replaced. Steve attached the network backbone to a custom made wooden mounting board and secured it in place. It is a much cleaner installation and will still provide easy access for maintenance and future additions. Still working on our Salsa steps. Isabella is a sailing ketch and is considered a 1990/2010 model. It has four private cabins, an engine room, salon, galley, and three heads with two separate shower stalls. The hull is fiberglass and is considered a bluewater cruiser. Isabella has an excellent capsize ratio of 1.68 and a very good comfort ratio of 42.19. She is equipped with Garmin / Raymarine electronics and has hydraulic steering. The naval architect was Michel Bigoin who also designed the largest sailboat in the world which was manufactured in 1976 and called Phocea. It was a 246 foot four masted steel schooner and was considered the largest private sailing yacht in the world until 2004. I have to say that while I did literally close to everything wrong, the @TotalBoat paint still performed amazingly. If it performs this well when you do everything wrong, it must be a legendary product when you actually follow the instructions! I also went ahead and opened up the boat to prep Desperado for more work. After two years in the boatyard, we’re finally tackling one of the nastier pieces of old equipment aboard ROAM: our rusty, galvanized anchor chain. We’re replacing it with Cromox stainless steel anchor chain, and in this episode we take you through the entire process—from removing the old chain and picking up the new chain at the warehouse to marking it, deploying it, and putting it into service in a very tight Chesapeake anchorage. But this isn’t just an installation video. Stainless steel anchor chain is controversial among sailors, and we understand why. There are legitimate concerns about corrosion, strength, and long-term care. We discuss those concerns and explain why, after doing our research, we decided this was the right chain for ROAM. The Chesapeake is notoriously dirty, and our new stainless chain quickly developed the ugly tan staining caused by tannins and other contaminants in the water. Stainless steel isn’t maintenance-free, and proper care is critical. Regularly rinsing the chain with fresh water helps remove salt and contaminants and keeps the chain looking—and hopefully performing—its best. To clean the staining, we used a very dilute oxalic acid solution, followed by a thorough fresh-water rinse. It’s a simple process, but it’s an important reminder that stainless chain still needs attention if you want it to stay in good condition. In this episode, we show: ⚓ Removing our old, disgusting galvanized anchor chain 🏭 Traveling to the warehouse to pick up our new Cromox chain 📏 Measuring and installing anchor chain markers 💥 Discovering that our first set of markers didn’t survive 🌈 Replacing them with simple colored zip ties 💦 Cleaning Chesapeake tannin staining from the stainless chain Marking the chain turned out to be more complicated than expected. We wanted to work from the boat end down, using the dinghy to feed the chain out while measuring each section. Because we’re sitting in a very tight anchorage with poor holding, we really didn’t want to pull the anchor that was holding well. So we found a way to do the entire job while remaining anchored. Why stainless steel? There are plenty of sailors who would never put stainless steel anchor chain on a cruising boat, and we understand the concerns. In this video, we explain what we considered, what we researched, and why we ultimately decided to trust Cromox for ROAM. We’re also very clear that stainless steel doesn’t mean maintenance-free. Regular fresh-water rinsing, inspection, and appropriate cleaning are all part of caring for the chain. Full disclosure: Cromox provided this chain to us as a marketing partner. We want to be completely transparent about that relationship. They supplied the product, but the opinions, experiences, and concerns discussed in this video are our own. We were running hot in Georgetown, and so were the Volvos. The only thing harder than cooling ourselves off was finding coolant for the engines. We’re anchored in Kidd’s Cove, searching Georgetown for strangely elusive coolant for our long-suffering Volvo Penta diesels. Back aboard Dark Angel, we install the new furling line we found at Brown’s Marine and the pennant halyards we sourced at Top to Bottom. We move to Flip Flop Beach, where I dive the anchor in very shallow water and discover the holding is far from ideal, but good enough for the day. With the heat building inside our un-air-conditioned boat, we take the paddleboards along the shoreline to the northern tip of Stocking Island. The sun is hot, the water is warm, and the Exumas are gorgeous. After spending the monsoon in Krabi, Thailand, living at anchor on our 42-foot sailboat, SV Reeva, we are finally preparing to check out and head back out to sea. But what do you actually do when you're living on a sailboat and the monsoon keeps you anchored in one place for over a month? For us, it meant slowing down. For 45 days, we lived at anchor in the sheltered waters of the Krabi River, which provided a safe harbour during some of the worst monsoon weather. What starts as a straightforward escape from bad weather quickly turns into another unexpected challenge when we begin experiencing problems with our boat’s electrical and power systems. In this episode of our liveaboard sailing adventure, we leave Great Keppel Island and make our way to Rosslyn Bay Marina, looking for a safe place to wait out the weather. Sailing the Queensland coast means constantly watching the wind, swell and forecast, and sometimes the best sailing decision is knowing when to get off the water. Once safely inside the marina, however, our problems aren’t over. We start experiencing issues with our boat batteries, inverter and electrical system, leaving us trying to work out what has gone wrong. After troubleshooting the problem, we discover that our inverter needs to be replaced — another unexpected expense and another reminder that living aboard a sailboat means constantly maintaining and repairing your home. We’re hoping YouTube can help us find the previous owner who built it and finally solve the mystery! Graham then tackled plumbing, drainage, rust, floors, walls and more, while Rachel worked on my jungle-themed bathroom panels. After nearly a year in Canadian waters, it's finally time for Arabella to say goodbye to Newfoundland and begin the long journey south. But there is still one adventure left. Steve returns to the Nuddick for a final attempt at establishing a new multi-pitch climbing route, this time with his longtime climbing friend Kate. Between difficult weather, wet rock, and a rapidly closing window, they have to accept that the five-pitch route they've been working toward may have to wait for another trip. Then comes the bittersweet farewell. After months exploring Newfoundland's remote south coast, Arabella leaves Francois and Burgio behind and begins the passage back to Maine. Robin and Akiva head south by land while Steve and Felix sail Arabella toward the United States. But this passage carries more weight than most. Steve's grandfather—the man who helped inspire Arabella and played an enormous role in her construction—passed away just days before they left Newfoundland. With hundreds of miles still between him and home, Steve reflects on growing up beside his grandparents, working alongside his grandfather, and how watching him build with his own hands planted the seed for a project that would eventually become Arabella. Ao calcular o custo do diesel para uma viagem de Paranaguá a Angra, a conclusão foi rápida. Como ele mesmo disse, com um cálculo de pão-duro, ele percebeu que "um veleiro é uma grande opção", afinal, ele vai no vento. A economia falou mais alto e o sonho ganhou uma vela. Mas a busca por um veleiro pronto esbarrou em dois problemas clássicos: o orçamento baixo e a altura de Júnior, que não se encaixava nos barcos que encontravam. A solução? Uma que parecia loucura: construir o próprio veleiro. Inspirados por um blog, e com a experiência prévia de ter construído apenas um galinheiro torto, eles mergulharam no projeto de uma vida. Essa filosofia de fazer com as próprias mãos se estende para a tecnologia a bordo. Em vez de comprar um chartplotter caro, Júnior montou o seu próprio sistema usando um Raspberry Pi, um pequeno computador que roda todas as cartas náuticas, GPS, AIS e profundímetro, compartilhando tudo via Wi-Fi com um tablet no cockpit. Boat jobs, boat problems… and apparently sheep-proofing a cottage! This week on Sailing Melody, we're back working on Ocean Melody and tackling one of those jobs that starts off simple and quickly turns into something much bigger. I start by cleaning out the engine bilge and trying to track down an annoying oil leak. But while investigating, we discover something we definitely weren't expecting — the alternator has been rubbing against and wearing through one of the bilge pump pipes. That means the bilge pumps have to come out, and now we're looking at replacing the damaged pipework. If you're experienced with marine bilge systems, let us know in the comments what type of pipe you'd use as a replacement! We also get the starter battery moved as we continue working our way through the never-ending list of jobs aboard Ocean Melody. Then it's time to head up to the off-grid cottage project. The cottage has been open to the elements for years and, unfortunately, the local sheep have discovered that it's basically a luxury sheep hotel! 🐑😂 So today's job is a simple one — cutting down a wooden door to stop the sheep getting back inside. Two projects, two very different sets of problems… and plenty still to do!
