Small Crack, Big Boat Job - An Insurance Dilemma Welcome back to Trinidad, our catamaran and a new round of boat work. This week we're throwing ourselves into a big job to solve a small problem. During our insurance survey, cracks in the weld that hold the bushings in place for the cross bar were deemed unfit for purpose. Although these cracks predate the ownership of our floating home, this time the message was clear no repair no insurance. It's an insurance dilemma. To repair the weld we need to remove the forestay and disconnect the crossbeam. A big job to correct a small problem. When you look at the numbers it leaves us questioning, is the peace of mind this brings worth the price? Music Musicbed.com Thank you very much for supporting our channel. Five hundred miles offshore, making our way across the Atlantic aboard Osprey, and we've encountered a weather system that's forcing us to reconsider our routing options. Every routing solution seems determined to send us hundreds of miles north, some almost as far as St. John's, Newfoundland, adding perhaps five hundred unnecessary miles to our passage. The problem is that the routing software is missing one very important option: the ability to stop. So that's exactly what we've done. With winds of thirty-five to forty knots, we've stopped the boat and settled into a much more comfortable and stable situation. Instead of pushing the boat and crew through difficult conditions, we're allowing the weather to move through while we take the opportunity to rest, attend to personal equipment, catch up on small jobs and recover some energy. We'll probably spend around twelve hours like this. When we get moving again, the crew will be refreshed, the boat will have avoided unnecessary punishment, and the weather should allow us to pick up a much more direct route towards Lanzarote, closer to the great circle. We also take a look around below decks and discuss our freshwater arrangements. Osprey's original water tanks are showing their age, with scale and contamination concerns making them unsuitable for drinking water. It's another practical challenge of operating an older offshore racing yacht, and one that requires careful management. But the bigger message of this episode is about seamanship. Knowing when and how to stop a sailing boat is every bit as important as knowing how to make it go fast. Whether that's heaving to, lying ahull or deploying a parachute sea anchor, the appropriate method depends on the boat and the conditions. Understanding those options, practising them and knowing how your own boat behaves can make an enormous difference when difficult weather arrives. Stopping isn't necessarily losing time. Sometimes it's the most efficient route forward. And perhaps more importantly, it gives both the boat and the people aboard the opportunity to recover, physically and psychologically, before continuing the voyage. Out here, five hundred miles offshore, that's exactly what we're doing.SAIL ABOARD OSPREY IN 2027 We're inviting sailors and supporters to join us aboard Osprey for a programme of offshore racing and ocean passages in 2027. Our planned events include: RORC Transatlantic Race — Lanzarote to Antigua, January 2027. RORC Caribbean 600 — February 2027. Antigua to Bermuda — an offshore passage through the Atlantic in April. Rolex Fastnet Race — August 2027. These are opportunities to experience genuine offshore sailing aboard a powerful 80-foot ocean racing yacht, learn from the challenges of operating her, and become part of the wider campaign. Places are available through our sailing sponsorship programme, which supports Osprey's preparation and our longer-term racing ambitions. If you're interested in joining us, please contact me through CSM The Mariner. Tell me a little about your sailing experience, which event interests you, and what you'd like to achieve. SUPPORT THE GLOBAL SOLO CHALLENGE CAMPAIGN Osprey is being prepared for the Global Solo Challenge, a solo, non-stop circumnavigation of the world. The work we're doing now, from rigging and sails to the smallest details of reliability and maintenance, is all part of preparing this extraordinary yacht for the demands of sailing alone around the planet. Alone on our Lagoon 400 catamaran in the Morro Jable marina at 44 °C: fitting two engine-room bilge pumps and a second autopilot for full redundancy before Cape Verde. Our Lagoon 400 came without bilge pumps in the engine rooms — if they flood, you either pump from the top or open a valve and let the water into the boat. So I bought two 2,000 GPH pumps and set about drilling the hull. Alone, because the blonde is in Italy. At sunset, because in the day it's 45 degrees. With Sikaflex that, it turns out, has an expiry date — mine expired in 2024 — so the only tube left was black, on a white boat. WD-40 helped. Then the engine room, which is not bigger than the ones on my body; a Victron Orion that has no power unless the engines are running; and two new cables I really didn't want to run. The pumps are in. Then the second autopilot — identical to the first, so B&G and Furuno each have their own and the whole system is redundant (you saw why in episode 119). Four cables through a protective pipe that was too tight, at 44.2 °C and 50% humidity, with a cable router designed by someone who hates people, a can of spray grease, and nobody to hold the other end. Seventy litres of sweat later: calibration, test… it's alive. In this episode, we're getting ready to take Osprey across the Atlantic, and I wanted to share three different perspectives on what goes into preparing an 80-foot racing yacht and her crew for a major offshore passage. We begin with footage of our departure from Fairhaven, Massachusetts, and a look around Osprey at the end of our second day at sea. I also talk through the weather situation we were facing before departure. With a powerful northeasterly weather pattern complicating our plans and the Gulf Stream to cross within the first 36 hours, choosing the right departure window was far from straightforward. It's a good illustration of how much thought goes into the decisions we make before we even leave the dock. Next, we go aboard for some crew safety training. I take everyone through their life jackets, with particular attention to personal AIS man-overboard beacons, how they work, and why understanding your own equipment is so important. It's a fairly detailed session and gives you a genuine feel for what training with me aboard Osprey is like. We don't just tick boxes. We explore the equipment, ask questions, and make sure everyone understands what they're carrying and how it might save their life. Finally, we go back to the evening before departure. The crew have headed off for dinner, and I take you on a walk around the boat to inspect the extraordinary amount of work everyone has been doing. One of the challenges of preparing a boat like Osprey is that so many people are working on different systems simultaneously. There's tremendous energy and enthusiasm, but somebody has to keep the whole picture together. As skipper, I need to understand every change, every installation, and every job that's been completed. Many of the improvements people are making today will travel thousands of miles with Osprey, potentially all the way around the world. That's a wonderful thing, but it also comes with responsibility. My job is to bring all those individual efforts together, tidy up the loose ends, and make sure we leave with a boat that's organised, understood, and ready for sea. It's a little glimpse into the less glamorous, but absolutely essential, side of offshore sailing: weather decisions, safety training, teamwork, and the quiet responsibility of knowing your boat. What this video is about is the tests you can do easily on a diesel engine to see if everything has been well maintained. We left our boat in Tahiti while waiting for our long-stay visa in Australia, but an unexpected marina emergency forced an urgent boat move without us on board! Welcome back to Barefoot Doctors Sailing! In this episode, our friend Trevor is boat-sitting our Nautitech 40 catamaran, LouLou, at Marina Papeete in French Polynesia. While tackling DIY boat repairs, including fixing a violently vibrating washing machine and hand-stitching our torn boom bag, the marina delivers shocking news. The pontoon where LouLou is tied up is being dismantled for urgent repairs, and the boat must leave its berth immediately. Because our passports are locked away at the embassy for visa processing, we cannot fly back to Tahiti. Trevor has to step up to captain a challenging marina move with the generous help of neighboring cruisers from SV Escapade and SV Seasential. In this episode, we pick up anchor at the easternmost island of Tonga and set sail for a more protected anchorage before the high winds arrive. Along the way, the boatyard confirms a haulout date for the following day, so we head straight to their moorings. The next morning, we attempt our first haulout using a trailer system, but challenging conditions and a trailer issue force us back to the mooring for another night. When we return the next day, the conditions are even worse, and our first experience with this type of haulout system in Tonga is more nerve-wracking than expected. Will we finally make it out of the water? After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. This is Why We Sail: Whales, Friends & Aboriginal Cave Art: Sailing to Nara Inlet Whitsundays Ep 141
You can become part of our crew over at Patreon https://www.patreon.com/c/sailingastridthewombat/posts Hi and welcome aboard @SailingAstridTheWombat We are Gav and Shezz and two and a half years ago we bought our Beneteau Oceanis 430 sailboat with absolutely no sailing experience and jumped straight into the deep end of liveaboard sailing. Our very first passage was just over 700 nautical miles, launching us headfirst into the world of bluewater cruising, learning to sail, and real life at sea. Since that moment, we’ve been fully immersed in boat life, documenting the journey of turning a production cruising sailboat into a capable, self-sufficient home for full-time liveaboard life. From major sailboat upgrades and off-grid power systems to everyday maintenance and skills building, we have been learning what it truly takes to own, sail, and live on a boat while preparing to sail around the world. We have now left the dock and our adventure has begun so hit subscribe to come along on the journey of a lifetime. If you’re into sailing adventures, beginner sailing, sailboat ownership, cruising lifestyle, and traveling the world by sailboat, our journey is all about real-time learning, ocean freedom, and realising our dream of world cruising under sail...Let's go! Leaving Shaw Island, we set sail deeper into the Whitsundays, heading for the sheltered waters of Nara Inlet on Hook Island — but this sail turns into one of those unforgettable days on the water! As we leave Shaw Island behind, we're treated to an incredible whale encounter, with whales fin slapping right beside the boat! Seeing these magnificent creatures so close while we're sailing is one of those moments that reminds us exactly why we chose this life of liveaboard sailing and travelling the world by sailboat. Our destination is Nara Inlet, one of the beautiful and protected anchorages in the Whitsundays, Queensland. After making our way into the inlet, we get a very special surprise. Waiting for us at the end of Nara Inlet is our good friend Joe, someone we haven't seen since we left Brisbane and began our journey north. After so much time apart, catching up again out here in the Whitsundays makes the arrival even more special. We're soon joined by our other friends aboard Sea Dog, and the anchorage quickly becomes a gathering place for cruising friends, stories and good times. This is one of the things we love most about the cruising lifestyle — you can travel hundreds of nautical miles, yet somehow keep running into friends along the way. While exploring Nara Inlet, we also discover some fascinating Aboriginal rock art created by the Ngaro people, the traditional custodians of the Whitsunday Islands. Seeing this ancient artwork in such a beautiful natural setting gives us a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the people who have called these islands home for thousands of years. Join us as we continue our liveaboard sailing adventure through the Whitsundays and explore more of the Queensland coast aboard our sailboat. After visiting several very different Dutch barges in the Netherlands and Belgium, I am beginning to understand what works for me, what does not and what I actually need from my future floating home. So in this episode, we are taking a break from reality and dreaming big. From a cosy living room with large windows and a wood-burning stove to separate guest accommodation, a proper workshop and enough space for my plastic recycling machine, I am putting together the wishlist for my ideal barge conversion. But this dream goes beyond a beautiful interior. I also want to explore whether an old steel barge could become a more sustainable home on the water, with solar power, natural insulation materials such as hemp, and systems for treating grey water and black water on board. Could one historic Dutch barge really combine comfortable canalboat life, practical boat work, space for guests and a more sustainable way of living on the water? And how much of this dream will survive once budgets and reality enter the conversation? After more than a decade of solo female boat life aboard my sailboat Karl, I am searching for a different kind of adventure: an old Dutch barge that I can transform into my long-term floating home. Roots on Water follows the boat search, the barge conversion and eventually the enormous DIY boat restoration ahead. The series follows me, a woman in her mid-40s, as I try to understand what I’m looking for, explore very different historic boats and eventually find Anna Maria, a 21-metre Dutch tjalk built in 1913. After buying her, I have to learn how to handle this massive old canal boat and bring her through the narrow waterways, bridges and locks of the Netherlands to Germany. Anna Maria was converted into a liveaboard barge in the 1970s, and I originally believed I could keep much of her existing interior. But as more and more problems reveal themselves, that plan begins to unravel and I make the slightly terrifying decision to tear everything apart and take on an enormous DIY boat refit. From searching for a floating home to navigating Anna Maria and rebuilding her from the steel hull up, this is an honest, developing story of canal boat life: difficult decisions, new skills, unexpected setbacks and the small victories that keep me moving forward. ⇩ FOLLOW THE JOURNEY ⇩ ► INSTAGRAM: http://www.instagram.com/WhiteSpotPirates ► FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/WhiteSpotPirates ► WEBSITE: http://www.whitespotpirates.com ⇩ START AT THE BEGINNING OF MY SOLO-SAILING STORY ⇩ Before Anna Maria, there was Karl: the sailboat I bought, rebuilt and eventually sailed away on alone. Sailing Sacred Seas | Episode 16 – Tunisia D | Boatyard Repairs & Our New Hardtop! Welcome back to Sailing Sacred Seas! ⛵ Last week, we tackled some winter maintenance on KAIA and started construction on our custom-built fibreglass hardtop, being made right here in Monastir, Tunisia. This week, Vika is back aboard, and we’re moving KAIA a short hop down the coast to Port de Pêche boatyard. It’s time to haul her out of the water and get stuck into some much-needed maintenance and upgrades. With KAIA on the hard, we tackle some regular saildrive maintenance, clean the underwater hardware and change the oil. We also investigate a vibration in the starboard Yanmar engine, which we suspect could be caused by a damaged propeller on our SD50 sail drives, with help from local mechanic Youseff. Meanwhile, our custom fibreglass hardtop is really starting to take shape! We head into the boatyard to see the progress made by the local craftsmen and take another big step towards transforming KAIA’s flybridge. We also continue planning our new solar arch, an important upgrade that will eventually give us a whopping 3,000 watts of solar power for more independence when we’re back out cruising. It’s another busy week in the Tunisian boatyard, with maintenance, repairs and some exciting changes taking shape aboard KAIA.

Most yacht owners have insurance. But how many really know what their policy covers, where that cover applies, or what will happen when something actually goes wrong? In this episode of the Berthon Podcast, Sophie Kemp is joined by Marcel Herrera, Chief Executive Officer of CompareYachtInsurance.com, for a practical look at yacht and boat insurance, without getting lost in the jargon. Marcel brings an unusual perspective to the subject. Before building his career in marine insurance, working across Lloyd’s brokers, MGAs and syndicates, he was a professional yacht racer competing internationally in both inshore and offshore events. That combination of sailing and insurance experience makes this a conversation firmly centred on the realities facing yacht owners. They begin with a deceptively simple question: what does it actually mean when somebody says their yacht is “fully insured”? Marcel explains the difference between Hull & Machinery, third-party liability and P&I, as well as agreed value, exclusions and the importance of looking beyond the premium when comparing policies. They also discuss why yacht insurance is very different from car insurance and why two apparently similar policies may provide very different protection. The conversation then moves into some of the situations owners may not think about until they become important. What happens if you retrofit lithium batteries? Can you lend your yacht to a friend? Does your insurer need to know that you're racing or sailing single-handed? What happens if you leave the yacht on a swinging mooring throughout the winter? And when should modifications, maintenance or changes in value be reported? For owners planning to cruise further afield, Sophie and Marcel explore how dramatically the insurance picture can change once you leave familiar waters. A policy suitable for cruising the UK and northern Europe may not necessarily follow you across the Atlantic, into the Caribbean or towards more adventurous destinations such as Patagonia, Svalbard or Antarctica. Marcel explains why cruising grounds, repair facilities, hurricane exposure, licensing and even geopolitical events can influence whether cover is available and what it costs. They also look at the owner themselves. Does an RYA qualification make a difference? Is experience more important than certificates? Can you buy a yacht that is simply too large for your experience? And could an insurer require a professional skipper until you've built up enough time aboard? Then comes the part nobody wants to experience: making a claim. From stolen tenders and marina collisions to groundings, fires and total losses, Marcel explains what happens after the phone call to the insurer, who surveyors and loss adjusters are, how insurers establish the cause and cost of a loss, and why owners should “act as if uninsured” when dealing with an emergency by doing what is necessary to protect people and the yacht rather than waiting for permission. The discussion also covers chartering, surveys, ageing yachts, standing rigging, saildrive seals, VAT and flag-state complications, before looking towards the future. Could yacht insurance eventually resemble modern car insurance, with onboard monitoring showing battery voltage, bilge activity, shore power and how the yacht is actually being used? Some insurers are already moving in that direction. Whether you're buying your first yacht, preparing for an Atlantic crossing, moving up to a larger boat or simply renewing the policy you've had for years, this episode asks one question worth answering before you cast off: Are you actually covered? Before taking Osprey offshore, it's time to go through the details that can make all the difference at sea. In this episode, I take you around the forward 30 feet of Osprey, our 80-foot ocean racing yacht, checking the equipment, fittings, lashings and arrangements that need to be secure before we head out into the Atlantic. Chafe is the enemy at sea. A line or fitting that looks perfectly satisfactory at the dock can become a serious problem after days of constant movement and loading. It's the small details that matter, and preventing trouble before it starts is a fundamental part of good seamanship. We then head below and consider an interesting question about collisions at sea. If you're unable to avoid hitting something, is it better to strike it head-on or turn and risk opening up a much larger section of the hull? The sinking of Titanic provides an interesting historical example, and we explore the practical considerations behind that decision. At approximately 15 minutes, we change scenes and take Osprey through the Cape Cod Canal during our passage towards Mattapoisett, Massachusetts. Taking a yacht of this size beneath fixed bridges requires careful attention to air draft, water levels and available clearance. With Osprey's mast towering above the deck, there's very little room for mistakes. It's an opportunity to see some of the practical considerations involved in moving a large ocean racing yacht through restricted waterways. SAIL ABOARD OSPREY IN 2027 We're inviting sailors and supporters to join us aboard Osprey for a programme of offshore racing and ocean passages in 2027. It's a substantial undertaking, and your support makes a real difference. PATREON If you'd like to help make the Global Solo Challenge campaign possible, support the ongoing work on Osprey, and follow the project more closely, you can join us on Patreon. https://patreon.com/themariner THE MARINER'S LIBRARY A collection of classic sailing and maritime literature, bringing some of the greatest stories of the sea to life. https://themarinerslibrary.podbean.com THE MARINER PODCAST Conversations about offshore sailing, seamanship, ocean racing, adventure and the practical realities of life at sea. https://www.themarinerpodcast.com CSM THE MARINER Our website is being updated and will soon provide more information about Osprey, the sailing programme, and the Global Solo Challenge campaign. https://csmthemariner.com

Vi nåede at få kølprojektet færdigt inden søsætning! ⚓ Vi er Just Oceans, og vi bor fuldtid på vores sejlbåd Vela sammen med vores to hunde. Whether you're a first-time sailboat buyer, a new boat owner, or an experienced cruiser looking to reduce maintenance costs, understanding the true workload of sailboat ownership is essential. The purchase price is just the beginning. One of the biggest hidden costs of boat ownership is the ongoing maintenance required to keep your boat safe, seaworthy, and ready for another sailing season. Haul outs should take place every year or two, and when it's time to haul your boat out of the water, every day on land can cost you money. Most boatyards charge a daily rate while your boat is on the hard, meaning poor planning, forgotten supplies, and unexpected repairs can quickly turn a routine haul-out into an expensive project. So, what actually needs to be done when a sailboat comes out of the water? And how can you prepare ahead of time to avoid wasting money? Steal our list of the 10 things we check during EVERY haul out that we use to maintain our fleet of 20+ yachts & minimize boatyard expenses: 1. Prep & Paint the Bottom 2. Replace the Zincs 3. Clean, Polish & Coat the Propeller 4. Inspect & Service the Thru-Hulls 5. Check the Cutlass Bearing 6. Inspect the Shaft Packing or Saildrive Seals 7. Service the Bow Thruster 8. Inspect the Anchor Chain & Ground Tackle 9. Inspect the Rudder & Joints 10. Drain & Dry the Rudder — The “Secret” Final Tip ⚓️ABOUT US⚓️ The Sailing Academy is an ASA sailing school for those who want to learn to sail, cultivate sailing skills, or begin a lifelong sailing adventure. Join us aboard our cruising vessel, MV Raiatea, as we explore the Pacific Northwest. Raiatea, a 2013 Ranger Tug R-25SC, is named after our favourite island in French Polynesia. We hope you enjoy our channel and accompany us on this marvellous journey. Chapter 24: Welcome to the final chapter of our 2026 autumn trip. In this chapter, we left Poet Cove on South Pender Island and set sail on a three-and-a-half-hour cruise to Wallace Island. Visiting Wallace Island has been on our wish list ever since we first bought MV Raiatea, and it was originally meant to be our very first shakedown cruise. Due to scheduling and maintenance, that trip never happened, but we have finally managed to go after five years. During our stay, we tried stern-tying for the first time in Princess Cove and enjoyed a long walk along the length of the island, from Panther Point to Chivers Point. We do hope you enjoy this concluding part of our autumn travels. // Contents // 00:00 Preamble 00:50 Introduction 01:40 Leaving Poet Cove 02:26 Wallace Island 03:29 Princess Cove 05:41 Cabin in Conover Cove 07:27 Panther Point 07:57 Chivers Point 08:43 Sunset in Princess Cove 10:05 The next morning 10:46 Anchor Rating // Music Credits // Music used (Preamble) YouTube Music Library Sleeping Sheep - The Green Orbs Music used (Intro) YouTube Music Library The Long Night - Quincas Moreira Music used YouTube Music Library Frolic - E's Jammy Jams Music used The Wellerman by Alexander Nakarada (https://creatorchords.com) Licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Music used Meine Ostsee by tmeier1964 via Pixabay Music used Ocean Waves by MissyWhimsyArt via Pixabay

We're getting closer to departure aboard Osprey, and preparations for our Atlantic crossing from New England to Lanzarote are continuing. In this episode, we're working through some of the smaller jobs that make a real difference when you're living and sailing offshore. I take a look at waterproofing sailing jackets, and we talk about the practical business of keeping stainless steel nuts, bolts and fasteners organised aboard a racing yacht. My philosophy is fairly simple: try to keep things together and reasonably organised, but don't become too obsessive about it. A boat needs to be a working environment, not a museum! We've also got the new interior LED lighting working properly. That means we can finally say goodbye to the flickering overhead lights, which is a very welcome improvement aboard Osprey. There's also something a little different in this episode. I've included around 15 minutes of footage from our recent Newport–Bermuda Race, looking specifically at winch operations. It's an opportunity to see some of the equipment in action and discuss the techniques, practical considerations and handling of the powerful winches aboard an 80-foot ocean racing yacht. As ever, it's a mixture of practical seamanship, boat maintenance, offshore racing and the everyday reality of getting a big sailing boat ready to cross an ocean. Thanks for following the journey, and particularly to everyone supporting the Osprey campaign. Your support helps keep this project moving forward. A huge weather system sweeps past Grenada, later developing into the devastating Hurricane Melissa. Thankfully, Excelsior and her crew are safe. But life aboard our sailing boat never stays quiet for long! When the sun finally comes out, the local kids come out to play, bringing some much-needed smiles after the unsettled weather. Then it’s time to roll up our sleeves and tackle a job every boat owner knows is coming sooner or later… our dreaded haul out! This is our fourth haul out, and once again, we’re doing all the work ourselves. Paying professionals simply isn’t in our cruising budget, so it’s time for plenty of hard work, boat maintenance, and getting stuck in. We’ve chosen Tyrell Bay, Carriacou for this haul out. And just to be clear, this episode is about our own haul-out experience — not a discussion of the wider controversies or reports surrounding how some yachties have been treated here. Join us as we navigate life in the Caribbean, deal with unpredictable tropical weather, enjoy the local community, and take on another big DIY boat project aboard Excelsior. ⚓ IN THIS EPISODE: A huge depression passes near Grenada before developing into Hurricane Melissa An update on Excelsior and her crew after the unsettled weather Sunshine, local kids, and a welcome change of pace Our fourth haul out as liveaboard cruisers DIY boat maintenance because we can’t afford to pay someone else! In this episode I get my 32 foot Ericson Sailboat off the dock solo style. Each week I aim to keep my sailboat seaworthy by venturing away from the dock. This week I tackle fixing and refinishing all the Hatches on Dagny. The main hatch was the main problem and this project took weeks to complete. Let me know if you have any question about materials and what they cost.
