Our sail from Puerto Rico to the US Virgin Islands started off absolutely perfect… warm winds, beautiful seas, and another unforgettable Caribbean passage aboard SV Wildly Intrepid. But once we arrived in St. Thomas, things got interesting fast. We explored the abandoned tunnels of Fort Segarra on Water Island, tucked deep inside a hidden military bunker overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Then we escaped strong easterly winds in the crowded anchorage of Christmas Cove before sailing into the heart of Charlotte Amalie — one of the most historic and pirate-filled towns in the Caribbean. From riding local dollar safari buses to climbing up to Blackbeard’s Castle for incredible harbour views, this island had so much character. But one hike turned into a total disaster when we ended up bushwhacking through sharp thorns in the blazing heat… definitely not the adventure we planned. We got a lot accomplished today, and it's a good thing because we're only 6 days from splashing! Shawn commissioned the Victron gear which means we have AC power! That means our appliances work! We also started to pretty up the boat before she goes back in, and after an entire day of work, the starboard hull below the chine is shiny and reflective. Big improvement!

Finally back to sailing videos! In early September of 2025, we departed Tahiti with our dependable crew Mike for our sail to Tonga, which is approximately 1,500 nautical miles. This trip is notorious because there is a squash zone in the middle where low pressures coming east from New Zealand trip up the trade winds and can bring some wild weather to this area. We danced with the low-pressure systems by going north and south a hundred miles frequently along this westbound route with our trusty weather routers' advice. Salut les loulous ⚓⛵ Le vent s’est levé aujourd’hui avec des rafales à 25 nœuds. À l’arrière du bateau, les déferlantes de 2,50 m se succèdent sans relâche. L’air est chargé d’une poussière rouge venue du désert, qui finit par se déposer partout sur le pont, donnant au bateau une étrange teinte ocre. Je profite d’un moment plus calme pour vérifier l’ancre : tout est nickel, elle ne bouge pas. Petite intervention ensuite sur l’alternateur ; un fil s’était dévissé. Rien de grave, mais il valait mieux s’en occuper rapidement. Je tente aussi une nouvelle expérience à bord : la fabrication d’un pain de 250 g. Le résultat est encourageant, même s’il reste encore quelques progrès à faire. En fin de journée, je prépare un apéritif à partir d’une recette qu’on m’a donnée : un mélange de rhum, de jus d’orange et de sucre de canne. Simple et parfait . Plus tard, balade sur l’immense plage de Sal Rei. Le lieu est splendide : une eau turquoise, un sable éclatant et une impression d’espace infini. Le lendemain, départ pour une promenade au nord de l’île jusqu’à une petite chapelle isolée. After multiple failed attempts last season, we finally get our weather window and set sail for Lady Elliot Island – a destination that’s been just out of reach for far too long. Departing from Rooney Point, we take on the 51-nautical-mile passage with high hopes… but the wind doesn’t exactly cooperate. What should’ve been a clean sail turns into a bit of a test of patience as we motor-sail our way north. But getting there was only part of it. Once we arrived, we made a call that went against what the sailing apps were telling us – choosing to moor on the northern buoy based on local advice from a dive skipper. Time will tell if that was the right move… With ARGO secured (for now), we celebrate finally making it here the only way that made sense – an 80s disco party onboard. But beneath the surface, there’s more waiting. We’ve heard this place is teeming with life – turtles, manta rays, and more – and tomorrow, we’re getting in the water to see it for ourselves. This is Part 1 of our Lady Elliot Island adventure – the journey, the decision, and the anticipation. Toni’s surgery in Baltimore meant it was time to start making our way north. With no good weather window to run Moments in Time all the way to the Chesapeake in the time we had, we turned our bows toward Charleston, South Carolina—just 160 miles up the Atlantic Coast. We’d spent the winter in Fernandina Beach, an unexpected detour from our original plan, but one that wrapped itself around us. Leaving is bittersweet. We’ve grown to love this town—its restaurants, pubs, parks, beaches, and most of all, its people. We’ll miss the friends we’ve made here. But health comes first. We’ll tackle these challenges head‑on and return ready to continue our adventure south next season. And as we raised our sails, it felt good—right, even—to be underway again.
