Robert Youens is a unique adventurer. North America’s premier cruising adventures like the Inside Passage, Northwest Passage, and Great Loop usually inspire large, stout craft choices, but Robert has done all three of those routes solo in an open jon boat! His next goal is to break the Great Loop elapsed time record with a partner. This video focuses of the fauna that we saw and visited in the Southern Ocean, mainly in the Falkland Islands and also in Antarctica. Although a good part of the Antarctica fauna is described and shown in a previous video and we don't repeat here. The video describes the key aspects of the behavioral patterns of 10 different species: 5 species of penguins, brown browed albatrosses, emperor or king shags (cormorants), Peales and Commerson dolphins, Leopard Seals, Weddell Seals and Southern Elephant seals.

In diesem ersten Teil der Nepal Expedition begleitet ihr Claudius und das Team auf eine der abgelegensten Trekkingrouten der Welt, den Weg zum Kanchenjunga Base Camp im Osten Nepals. In Kathmandu trifft die Gruppe erstmals aufeinander: Roman, Luggi, Kati, Andi sowie die lokalen Guides Ganesh & Nabin und die Träger, die diese Expedition überhaupt möglich machen. Kurz darauf geht es mit einem spektakulären Inlandsflug raus aus der Großstadt und direkt hinein in die Berge des Himalayas. Schon die Anreise wird zum Abenteuer. 8 Stunden Jeepfahrt über zerstörte Straßen, kaputte Brücken und Schlammpisten zeigen die rohe Realität Nepals. Erdbeben, Unwetter und Wassermassen prägen viele Regionen bis heute. Dann startet endlich das Trekking. 17 Tage zu Fuß durch eine der wildesten Landschaften Nepals, vorbei an gigantischen Bergen, abgelegenen Dörfern und unglaublichen Ausblicken. Weil mehrere Brücken weggeschwemmt wurden, muss das Team immer wieder improvisieren und Umwege nehmen. Mit jedem Tag steigen Höhe und Kälte. Ab Tag 5 wird die Expedition spürbar härter: eisige Nächte, dünne Luft und immer extremere Bedingungen. Beim Restday auf 4700 Metern frieren nachts sogar die Thermoskannen ein, bei Temperaturen bis zu -10°C. Dort beginnt die wichtige Akklimatisation für den weiteren Weg Richtung Kanchenjunga Base Camp. In this segment, expectations are well defined: ease of use, range and reliability. Today started with a 48-minute workout: 💪 Resistance bands 🔥 10-minute battle rope burnout 🚶‍♂️ 58-minute fast walk 💧 3 litres of water already down this morning 🦵 Knee swelling finally improving The battle ropes are becoming one of my favourite workouts, although poor Jen’s arms were shaking so much afterwards she struggled opening a carton 😂 The biggest lesson from Day 30? As many know, I don't just design and sail multihulls. I am also a keen dinghy sailor, having been racing in a huge variety of different singlehanders for over 60 years. For the last 5 years or so I've been racing a singlehander with an asymmetric spinnaker - as seen in the heading photo. But as I'm now well into my 70s I found it a bit too challenging in winds over 15 knots. I bought a 13ft Solution dinghy at the end of last summer. This video is on one of my early sails, before I had got used to the boat and had set it up as I wanted. I hadn't taken any video from a dinghy for a few years and so this one was a bit of a test for a suitable setup. It wasn't great having the mount by the shrouds, even though it was out of my way. So I had to handhold the camera for a while. Anyway, at least it shows you my sailing/racing area, near the mouth of the river Tamar in Plymouth.
