PEGGY BAWN is a rare thing indeed. The number of surviving vessels from pioneering Clydeside yacht designer George Lennox Watson’s lifetime (1851-1904) can be counted on a careless carpenter’s fingers. Long gone are his huge America’s Cup challengers and “Big Class” racing yachts, and only two of the fleet of palatial steam yachts – the superyachts of their day – from his Glasgow drawing boards are known to survive, in fabulous condition although barely recognisable from their original appearance. https://www.sandemanyachtcompany.co.uk/yacht/302/PEGGY%20BAWN It is left to PEGGY BAWN to carry the flame for Watson’s groundbreaking mid-1890s work in setting the standard for moderation in sailing yacht design, work that has never been challenged – only endorsed by those who followed his lead through the 20th century, especially Olin J. Stephens, who was a self-confessed Watson fan. PEGGY BAWN’s gilded “fiddle” bow was anachronistic even at her launching in 1894, partly a past fad, partly practical, undoubtedly beautiful – an interim stage in the development of extending immersed waterlines for faster sailing when heeled with a more buoyant hull – but it conceals the fact that when her award-winning restoration team began assessing what they’d found in a County Waterford hay barn in 2003, they quickly realised that the “numbers” – yacht designer speak for the various ratios that define a hull – were simply a scaled-down version of those for Watson’s famous royal racing cutter Britannia of 1893. Her name gave rise to the so called “Britannia Ideal”, as she was and is considered the epitome of sea kindliness. PEGGY BAWN's present owner can vouch for that from fourteen seasons of racing and cruising aboard her in northern and Mediterranean Europe, and east coast USA. PEGGY BAWN is quite simply the best behaved yacht any of them had had the pleasure to sail. And her rebuild and restoration set new standards for documentation and authenticity. She's special.

Few British pre-war cruiser-racers have had so much love and care lavished on them, but this striking 50 ft classic yawl - Fred Shepherd’s last design - thoroughly deserves it. https://www.sandemanyachtcompany.co.uk/yacht/775/fred-shepherd-50-ft-yawl-19392025 AMOKURA's story is remarkable and her ability legendary. Almost as if she demanded it, her few owners over more than 80 years have always let her off the leash as a long-distance cruiser and passage racer; in present ownership she has completed the past two Fastnet Races and cruised extensively. Through the lessons learned during voyages that offer time to think, AMOKURA has been refined and improved to the extent that she is most probably a more able yacht than when launched by Moody's in 1939. Yet she is doing exactly what her designer and commissioning owner envisaged. Down below that is achieved with rather more comfort than the 1930s sailor accepted, but with no loss of charm and period feel. AMOKURA is very special, and, of course, she doesn't need to be sailed far away to be enjoyed and to give back.

It might be quite difficult to write something new about Jack Laurent Giles’s legendary Vertue design, the subject of many books and articles over 90 years, often about intrepid voyages. https://www.sandemanyachtcompany.co.uk/yacht/769/TOM%20THUMB But TOM THUMB has always been a special Vertue, because of the astonishing quality of her original build by renowned artisans Harold Kimber and David Blake – its specifications, and raw materials, under Lloyd's ✠100A1 supervision – and now also because of the honourable restoration treatment in present ownership undertaken by Stirling & Son. All ferrous metal, often the usual suspect in denying longevity in these boats, was removed and replaced with bronze; she got a replacement deck, cockpit and enchanting interior; and, very recently, a new engine. Subsequently TOM THUMB has been well proven cruising Baltic and Hebridean waters, and is very ready for more.

When we last listed BOJAR for sale we claimed she was a yacht that might even define the term ‘classic yacht’; visiting her recently on her mooring - nothing has changed! https://www.sandemanyachtcompany.co.uk/yacht/770/BOJAR I would not be surprised if the sheerline Johan Anker drew in 1937 has not moved a single millimetre such was the quality of her original build and the caring ownerships this boat has enjoyed. Her beauty remains effortless and totally unspoilt. BOJAR’s race record is impressive - although she has never competed on the Mediterranean classic race circuit, you have to wonder… With her ballast ratio at approximately 50% and very little to compromise her authenticity coefficient, what fun she could be as the new girl in sunny town!?

Even for William Fife III's genius, ADVENTURESS would have to rate as one of his best of the best. Her lines and the proportions of her rig are exquisite; she is a wonderful size; large enough to cruise in comfort but at 82 ft on deck she can still be considered an intimate family yacht and her interior is one of the best we have ever seen. https://www.sandemanyachtcompany.co.uk/yacht/408/ADVENTURESS Her 2012 restoration is well documented, but there have been very few of this quality where absolutely no compromises were made and with such delicate and subtle treatment to every detail. Perhaps the most successful and elegant inshore waters racer/ cruiser ever to grace UK waters, they look equally as good at rest as at play. 31 boats were built by Berthon Boat Company for UK clients between 1923 and 1933, with fleets developing at Lymington, Torbay, and on the east coast. MISCHIEF has sailed there, and much further afield including cruising Europe's western seaboard to the Mediterranean in the 1980s. She has undoubtedly benefited from having just one loving owner since 1991; very well set up for short handed cruising and occasional racing. From renowned designer Ed Burnett’s drawing board, HELENA was launched in the summer of 2018, her every detail fashioned by a small team of British craftsmen with a proud heritage of wooden boatbuilding led by shipwright Mike Ludgrove over a period spanning more than a decade. With lines echoing from the 1930s, she is every inch a classic inspiration from the Golden Age of yachting, yet combines all the advantages of watertight and modern construction and new and efficient systems. When we visited HELENA immediately after her return from the Mediterranean it was almost impossible to believe this was a boat that had sailed 9000 miles in one summer. DANCER has Bill Tripp Jr's distinctive and very attractive style written all over. His name means that sailing performance comes guaranteed; after all, she's a slightly smaller design sister to Huey Long's incredibly successful ONDINE II, also built by master yacht builders Abeking & Rasmussen in aluminium. In recent decades blue water performance cruising has been DANCER's calling, and she does this with comfortable aplomb. Always well maintained and upgraded during 35 years of previous ownership, DANCER’s current owner since 2022 has fastidiously refitted the aluminium sloop to the extent that very few items of systems and equipment date from earlier than 2023. The opportunity to follow through - from sketches (perhaps grounded in childhood), to drawings, to reality - the design of that somehow most romantic of pleasure vessels, a traditionally inspired schooner yacht, must have been a great thrill for her designer, working with a commissioning owner up for some adventure. The idea was to carry her owning family to warmer waters in some style, without fuss and anxiety. Despite what Ed Burnett might have said below, perhaps when pressed about influences, AMELIA’s hull design is clearly a gentle evolution from the highly successful late 1990s 30 ft ZINNIA design created in partnership with Nigel Irens: a very good idea indeed. Great attention would, of course, have been applied to the special requirements of a schooner’s sail area distribution - to get the ‘drag’ in the keel profile just right. But in many ways, she’s simply a double size ZINNIA, which means that she feels much bigger than she is, sails like a dream, and rewards great pride in ownership. AMELIA has now ticked all the boxes for two owners. The first did indeed sail her down the Portuguese Trades to the warm waters of the Mediterranean where she was lightly used there until entering present ownership in 2010 when her home port moved north to Belgium. In current ownership, through much experience by use, AMELIA’s rig has been gradually and relatively subtly modernised/ optimsed for both performance and ease of short-handed sailing by a couple. While down below her accommodation has been delightfully transformed from New England style simplicity to the feel of a cosy Edwardian gentleman’s club. One can imagine spending a lot of time down there while reeling off the sea miles with aplomb.

Even in 2005 it was becoming almost impossible to find an unrestored but in commission, high pedigree early 20th Century classic cruiser-racer of 50 feet and over. The Spirit 46 truly set Spirit Yachts on the right track, and no wonder; this design has many of the answers if you are searching for modern racing and cruising performance with the emotional satisfaction of an incredibly beautiful hull form, startling ease of handling, and an interior as elegant as her external lines would suggest. https://www.sandemanyachtcompany.co.uk/yacht/744/ONDINE%20OF%20IPSWICH ONDINE OF IPSWICH returned to her original builder for a meticulous 2015 refit to optimise racing efficiency and cruising comfort. In two subsequent family ownerships her cruising range has spanned the length and width of the English Channel and she has been a regular racer at British Classic Yacht Club regattas; considered one of the quickest Spirit 46s on the race track. At the 2024 Guernsey Spirit Yachts Regatta she was first Spirit 46 and third in Class 2. ONDINE OF IPSWICH is a very well proven example of a design that has captured hearts and won minds – even 007 couldn’t resist!
