Scopri quando è davvero utile averne uno a bordo, come utilizzarlo correttamente e soprattutto perché la manutenzione è fondamentale per non trovarsi nei guai in mare aperto. --- ### Quando si usano i motori ausiliari? I **motori ausiliari per barche** si utilizzano principalmente quando il **motore principale non funziona**. Sono fondamentali per garantire una propulsione alternativa, ad esempio per rientrare in porto in sicurezza. Sulle barche sotto i 10 metri, il motore ausiliario è quasi sempre un **fuoribordo**, spesso stivato in un gavone e montato all’occorrenza. ### Come si utilizzano? Il funzionamento è semplice: si prende il motore fuoribordo dal suo alloggiamento, lo si installa all’esterno, lo si accende e si usa per spostare la barca dove necessario. Tuttavia, è importante sottolineare che **averlo non basta**: un motore ausiliario inutilizzato da anni difficilmente si avvierà quando ne avrai bisogno. ### Motore ausiliario sì o no? This episode takes us from Carbost to Ardmore Bay, enjoying a beautiful sail until our VHF suddenly stops working. With safety in mind, we run tests to track down the fault before heading off again. The next day we enjoy a sunny, perfect sail north to the Isle of Harris, dropping anchor in a quiet bay all to ourselves. With the weather warm enough for a swim, Matt even dives down to collect fresh scallops for dinner the best kind of reward after a day on the water! But sailing life always brings surprises… the following morning our windlass finally gives up completely, leaving Matt to haul up the anchor chain by hand, injuring his hand in the process. We manage to motor round the corner to the Isle of Harris Marina, a beautiful, community-run marina with everything right on the doorstep. The staff couldn’t have been friendlier, and we even treated ourselves at the local deli. Matt takes apart the windlass, finds the culprit, and (thankfully!) manages to get it fixed. Argh! I'm repairing the exhaust hose on my Catalina 30 sailboat in this episode. We had a leak and have to diagnose & repair the problem to keep the boat from taking on water while under motor power. I had to replace the exhaust flap and hose to keep the boat dry while using the engine. We ordered the replacement exhaust flange from http://CatalinaDirect.com. With less than 24 hours to the finish in Nice, the game is still wide open. On board Malizia – Seaexplorer, the crew has been fighting through a hot and sticky Mediterranean night, sailing downwind along the northern coast of Mallorca with little to no rest. Even in light winds, there was no pause: constant trimming, headsail changes, and strategic calls kept the team on their toes. Now, fresher reaching conditions are finally offering some relief, as the crew powers north with determination and their eyes firmly set on the French Riviera. January 30-31, 2021 Welcome to La Graciosa where the population is about 700. In this episode, you join us in our first 2 full days of exploring the island. We take the North Route, where the winds blow against us and the currents are strong. We hike up both Mt Mojon & Red mt and get around on our second day of exploration on bikes on this sandy island. La Graciosa is one of the last places in Europe with no asphalted roads. Motor vehicles are strictly limited to a handful of licensed vehicles for special purposes. It is the least explored and most peaceful and serene of the Canary Islands. Tourism is the main industry along with fishing. Every year, tourists flock to the island for its tempered climate and its sandy volcanic coasts. Despite the size of this island, it has a school, a church, post office, supermarkets, medical center, pharmacy, a bank branch, bar-restaurants, bike rental and a square. Access to the island for all the non-sailors is by a 25-minute ferry crossing from Órzola on Lanzarote to the harbour in the village. In this episode of Sailing ELANE, we hike up to the top of Mt. Mojon (266 moh), climb down to the crater. -------------- While exploring Mt Mojon, we recognized many stone formations or barriers and wondered why they were there. We new we were required to stay on the trails in order to preserve the nature, but looking back, I think we were a little too lenient with the boys and might’ve broken a few rules here….Norway's "freedom to roam" law, grants everyone the right to access uncultivated nature for activities – so, all of these restrictions on La Graciosa were unnatural and new for the boys…and, we now realize that , being a protected Natural Park, this fun stone-rolling was an unnecessary way of hurting the landscape and plant life. :/ ---------------- Hiking trails in La Graciosa La Graciosa is not a big island, allowing you to get to know it by walking the trails that cross and run and lead us to those virgin, solitary beaches, which are paradise in every sense of the word. Being a protected Natural Park, a series of rules must be followed to help preserve this natural wonder so that the landscape, plant life and marine life are not affected by the presence of tourists. Therefore, we should never veer from the paths of the routes in order to avoid erosion of any particular area because vegetation might not grow again, and at the same token do not disturb the marine wildlife or tear out wild plants, as many species are endemic, ie – this is there one and only home. Depending on the hours available to spend on the island, recommended routes vary because if you’re restricted by boat timetables back to Lanzarote you will have to be selective over which route to choose in order to make the most of the beaches, sun and the island. La Graciosa is pure volcanic landscape where there are no trees or shade to shelter from the sun on the paths. There is also no possibility of replenishing food or water on the routes and beaches, so a good hat or cap, sunglasses, enough food and water, and sunscreen should not be missing in any backpack on the routes, as well as proper footwear of course. This is your weekly Global Sailing Highlights show, the World on Water, for August 29 2025. The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup was launched in 1980 by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, and welcomed Rolex as a Title Sponsor five years later. In 2025 the prestigious club will pay tribute to its founder, His Late Highness Aga Khan IV, who passed away in February, but whose forward-looking vision led to the creation of an institution that has become an international benchmark in yachting. An International Jury has awarded redress to Team Holcim-PRB after their Leg 1 collision with Allagrande Mapei Racing in Kiel Germany. Both teams retired from the opening stage, but Holcim-PRB will now earn Leg 1 points based on their average performance across Legs 2–5. No further penalties were issued, and both crews say they’re eager to put the incident behind them and focus on the race ahead. The seven IMOCA teams left the ancient port city to begin the 650-nautical-mile leg 3the Mediterranean to Nice France. The fleet set off in 12 to 17 knots of north-easterly breeze, tacking along the Spanish coast toward the first scoring gate at Cabo de Palos. The conditions on leg 3 are expected to be complex, with a low-pressure system moving into the western Mediterranean that could produce anything from strong upwind battles to fast downwind runs. On the morning of Monday, August 25, the yachts participating in the Aegean Regatta set sail for Agios Efstratios, in the 24th edition of the international sailing race that continues to make history across the beautiful Aegean Sea. Dublin Bay delivered a full test of stamina and skill on day two of the 2025 Ilca Under-21 World Championships, with some clear leaders beginning to emerge. South-east winds gusting up to 25 knots brought exhilarating downwind surfing and short, steep two-metre seas, putting fitness and hiking technique firmly to the test. Tired but upbeat sailors came ashore looking forward to recovery time before more fresh conditions in the coming days. Doug DeVos' American Magic Quantum Racing emerge with a slender one point lead overall at the end of a long mentally and physically demanding three race programme on Day 3 on the Bay of Palma at Puerto Portals 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week in Mallorca. The 2025 Fireball World Championship kicked off in record-breaking style, hosted by Circolo Vela Arco and running on the waters of Lake Garda – Trentino until Friday, 29 August. This major international event will be followed in early September by the Italian Single-Handed Championships. A total of 136 boats from 14 nations are competing, the largest Fireball fleet ever assembled outside the Anglo-Saxon countries in the class’s history.

“At one point we were at 30knot average…just incredible” - Paul Meilhat - Biotherm “I don’t think we could do better than that..we are in our place” - Franck Cammas - Holcim PRB There were no shortage of big statements from exhausted offshore rock stars at the finish of Leg 2 of the Ocean Race Europe. This might have not been a lap of the planet for these highly accomplished sailors and their crews, but there was no doubt that as the longest leg so far it was also the most complex and, as it turned out, the most stressful too. From straight line blasts to full on park-ups, the leader board took several major shuffles and ensured that few of the crews got much sleep at all during the 1,400 mile leg. What was in plentiful supply was some fantastic footage sent back from the boats that took us onboard and to the heart of the action in this complex two stage leg. Once they were off from the dock in Portsmouth we headed to the finish in Cartagena, Spain to see the teams in and find out at first hand how the leg had been. Long range, low running costs and incredible living spaces are just some of the reasons why I can see the Omikron OT-60 becoming the boat of choice for people who otherwise thought they needed a catamaran or a trawler. I think it's fair to argue that this design makes more sense than a catamaran or trawler from an operational and living perspective in many of the worlds busy cruising grounds. I accept if you want to cross the Atlantic then this isn't the boat, but for many of you who are sticking to the Med or Caribbean then this boat is actually better and more user friendly in so many ways. If you're serious about spending some extended time on the water then this boat is worthy of a deep dive.
