This time on Distant Shores we take you to one of the world's most popular sailing and bareboat charter destinations, the British Virgin Islands or BVI, where Paul and I have returned again and again throughout 40 years of international cruising. Sailing to Annapolis was a milestone for us, but life afloat brings new challenges. This week we arrive in Annapolis, wrestle with how power and water are limiting our cruising plans, and take on a few boat projects like repairing a leaky hatch. We also face two big weather events: a wild summer storm, and hurricane Erin which ended up being surprisingly uneventful. 📍 Chesapeake Bay → Annapolis ⛵ Royal Cape 500 Catamaran 🔔 Subscribe for weekly sailing family episodes. Day 15, Lots of Issues but isn’t time to give up! The Bravest Dog in the World Is About to Change It. Help Us Get There. I’m Kimmer O’Reilly — sailor, survivor, and founder of a mission that shouldn’t be possible. Two-time blood cancer nearly took my life. When I survived, I expected joy. What came instead was an identity crisis. I didn’t know who I was anymore — just that the old me was gone. Then came Casper — my service dog, my best friend, my reason to fight forward. Now, Casper and I are doing something no one believes can be done: a nonstop solo circumnavigation of the globe… starting from the wrong side. We’re sailing east, into the wind and current, through the Southern Ocean and past the Cape of Good Hope — proving that after cancer, life isn’t over. It can be better than it ever was. But we’re not just breaking records. We’re launching a nonprofit to help cancer survivors rediscover purpose, identity, and joy. This GoFundMe isn’t just to keep our sails full. It’s to build something that lasts long after we return. Donate today — not just to help Casper and me sail around the world, but to help thousands of survivors believe they can start again. Let’s show the world what’s possible. 👉 https://bit.ly/BravestDogInTheWorld

We take a look at the options the sailors took, stunning drone footage of Biotherm off the Ibiza coast, some of the conditions they encountered, interviews with Paul Meilhat and Franck Cammas after the finish, and how the leaderboard is looking after Leg 3. Join us aboard SV Reeva, our 12 m sailing yacht, as we take on one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world — the Singapore Strait. This action-packed episode is full of adventure, adrenaline, and emotional goodbyes. After a stormy night with our anchor dragging dangerously close to Singapore waters, we embarked on a 70-mile passage from West to East Johor Bahru, navigating squalls, strong currents, and hundreds of massive cargo and container ships. With favorable currents, Reeva reached a record speed of 9 knots, weaving through 400-meter tankers and fast-moving vessels. After 11 intense hours, we made a safe landfall at Senibong Cove Marina, a quiet and sheltered inlet at Sungai Lunchoo — the perfect spot to rest and recover. This episode is also a farewell tribute to our crew mates, Apoorva and Swaroop, as they return to Switzerland. From sushi nights and karaoke fun to heartfelt goodbyes, this episode captures the essence of community, adventure, and life at sea. 📺 Watch till the end for behind-the-scenes moments, storm highlights, and the unfiltered reality of life aboard a bluewater cruising yacht. This week we set sail from Milos toward the Peloponnese, facing one of the most notorious passages in Greek waters: Cape Malea, also known as the “Devil’s Cape.” For centuries, Cape Malea has been feared by sailors. The cape juts out into the Aegean where currents, swells, and shifting winds collide, often turning calm seas into chaos. Ancient mariners dreaded this headland so much that it became part of legend. Homer himself mentioned Cape Malea in the Odyssey—it was here that Odysseus was blown far off course, beginning his long and fateful wanderings. Even today, locals say: “When you round Malea, forget your home.” On our passage, the cape lived up to its name. Winds funneled around the rocky headland, accelerating in violent gusts that tested both our sails and our nerves. Yet once past the Devil’s Cape, the seas eased and we continued on a smoother course toward Kalamata, grateful for both the challenge and the reward. IN THIS EPISODE: – Departing Milos with strong Meltemi winds at our back – Sailing around Cape Malea, one of the most feared headlands in Greece – Historical insights into why the “Devil’s Cape” is legendary among sailors – Arriving safely in Kalamata, gateway to the southern Peloponnese – Reflections on why ancient wisdom about this passage still rings true today FOLLOW OUR JOURNEY: Instagram Sailing & Tech: @sailing_svgoat Instagram Lifestyle: @nobodysride Facebook: Sailing SV GOAT TAGS: #SailingSVGOAT #CapeMalea #DevilsCape #SailingGreece #GreekIslands #Peloponnese #SailingLife #Odyssey #StormSailing #SailingAdventure #BluewaterSailing #GreekMythology

SAILING ILLUSTRATED #861 (Fri 29 Aug 2025) — With the start of the RC44 World Championship Thursday off Scheveningen (NED), the Netherlands lived up to its reputation for being able to offer four seasons in one day. The start of racing was first delayed by an hour waiting for the wind to fill in. Out on the water a massive rain cloud descended on the fleet providing everyone with a thorough soaking. Then, in its aftermath, came wind, sun and the first race. We'll have the latest, and much more. This episode kicks off with a BIG surprise you won’t want to miss.. 🐠 Become a Patreon + help save the ocean 🌊👇 https://www.patreon.com/c/SailingAmi After some time apart, we’re finally back together on the boat - but not before a few unexpected repairs slow us down and keep us on our toes. We then head to a remote island steeped in shipwreck history - including the infamous SS Gothenburg, wrecked in 1875. The story is a powerful reminder of just how ruthless and unpredictable the sea can be. And lastly, we stumble upon a hidden waterfall tucked away in a secret spot. With no one else around, a spontaneous skinny dip was pretty much unavoidable.. 0:00 - SURPRISE! 0:28 - Intro 1:37 - Leaving Airlie 2:29 - It's Broken.. 3:59 - Sailing to Holbourne Island 6:09 - SHIPWRECK STORIES 8:53 - Sailing to Cape Upstart 10:32 - We Found a SECRET Waterfall? 15:53 - Coconuts! 16:15 - Sailing to Magnetic Island 16:55 - Next Week! #sailboat #sailing #shipwreck

After a break in the US we're back in Trinidad, getting things done aboard our sailing home! This episode we tackle one of the insufficient boat repairs from our extended warranty haul out, using fiberglass and epoxy to reinforce a bulkhead. To do the repair we were lucky enough to get input from Rolf, who you may have seen on Spear It Animal or Huub Vlogs. Welcome aboard for Episode 134 of the Sunny Sailor! 🌞⛵ This week I’m in beautiful St. Thomas, USVI, tackling life afloat with my usual dose of trial, error, and laughter. In this episode: ✅ I take on repairing my dinghy — even though I’ve never done it before! So instead of a “how-to,” this turned into a “how-I-do” repair video — quirky, messy, and maybe not textbook… but it works! ✅ I discover the *ancient art* of opening a can with… a spoon (yes, really). Cue the awkward fumbling, bad jokes, and more determination than skill ✅ I prove that boat life comes with endless laughs, fails, and naughty jokes that might remind you of the humor of a 12-year-old boy. It’s quirky, it’s funny, it’s sailing life as it really happens here in the Caribbean. #SailingLife #DinghyRepair #BoatLife #CaribbeanSailing #StThomas - This Episode is a reduced version for YOUTUBE of our original. you can see the full movie on: https://thesunnysailor.com/my-entry/rent-or-buy-now/ I'm sorry to have to censor some scenes to adapt this YOUTUBE version, but it is required by the very restrictive YouTube Community Norms about nudity and adult content. Join us on another chapter of our liveaboard sailing journey around the world as we set sail in search of a new, calmer anchorage. After spending time in a stunning but very rolly anchorage, it’s time to weigh anchor and move on to find a more peaceful spot to drop the hook. This sailing episode is filled with the beauty and unpredictability of life at sea. Along the way, we’re treated to an incredible surprise – a playful pod of dolphins swimming alongside our sailboat. These magical encounters are one of the many reasons we fell in love with cruising full-time. In this video, you’ll experience: - Sailing techniques for relocating anchorages - Tips for choosing a safe, comfortable anchorage - Scenic views of coastal cruising - Unforgettable dolphin encounters at sea - The real-life ups and downs of off-grid sailing Whether you’re a beginner sailor learning the ropes, a seasoned bluewater cruiser, or simply love watching ocean adventures, this episode is packed with inspiration and practical insight into the liveaboard lifestyle. From raising the anchor to reading the weather, we share what it’s really like to be sailing full-time. Our mission is to explore the world by sailboat, one anchorage at a time, while sharing the freedom, challenges, and beauty of life on the water. If you dream of travelling the world by sailboat, discovering hidden bays, and embracing the simplicity of life afloat, you’ll love this sailing vlog. Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and join our crew as we chase horizons, find new anchorages, and live the adventure. It's been a year and a half since our first sail in @SailingAstridTheWombat actually that means it's been a year and a half since our first sail ever. That's right a year ago we bought this Beneteau Oceanis 430 and pulled the sail up for the first time ever when we brought her home. A sail that stretched 700 nautical miles from Townsville in Far North Queensland Australia to Moreton Bay in Brisbane Queensland. We are now preparing to move onboard and to sail around the world. Join us to see the challenges as we continue to learn to sail, prepare our boat and make changes so our boat feels like a home. We are moving onboard in just a few weeks so our sailing dream is getting closer and closer. Each experience we have and each new sailing skill learnt just keeps bringing us closer to taking off to sail around the world in our Beneteau Oceanis 430 @SailingAstridTheWombat living our boat life dream. Try Captain's Salve — handcrafted skin balm for the wild life: https://captainssalve.com Sailing to Andros, Greece, we expected wild winds — but instead we motored across glassy seas through one of the windiest passages in the Aegean. Along the way, we explore abandoned villages, ancient stone bridges, crystal clear beaches like Tis Grias to Pidima, and mysterious caves hidden along the coast. We discover terraced hillsides built thousands of years ago, avoid venomous vipers, and even stumble across a tiny octopus living just feet from our anchor that gave a unique insight to octopus life. This is a poetic and rugged look at a Greek island rarely shown in this light — full of magic, mystery, and beauty.
