The wind's not blowing, but we're still going! In this video, We’re breaking down how far our1971 Pearson 35 can go on an electric motor alone. After months in the boatyard, we made some serious upgrades to improve the boat's efficiency, including: -Swapping the old 2-blade sailing prop for a new 3-blade feathering prop. -Sealing up the centerboard cavity on the bottom of the keel. -Fairing the bottom of the hull for a smooth finish. With these changes, we've seen a huge improvement in speed and range under power. We'll test it all out and see just how many nautical miles we can get! The list of surprises keeps growing. This season we decide to tackle some much need love below the waterline which never had a barrier coat. This doesn't go without a few hiccups or extra things to fix should I say. The rudder comes down to fix a structural issue where it's mounted, our propeller also has to be removed in order to replace the cutlass bearing, the strut gets welded, a water tank removed and the task of sanding the hull to bare glass begins. This leads to finding an old damage and making a huge hole in our keel, not ideal. All of that between some serious cleaning after our extremely moldy and wet return. Filmed Fall 2024. This week’s episode takes us from the Isle of Harris back to the mainland, calling first into Shieldaig near Gairloch before heading to Plockton. After a quiet night there, we set off at 6am for a day sail south — timing our departure carefully to catch the tides at Kyle Rhea, where currents can run up to 9 knots against you if you get it wrong. The forecast warned of rough Atlantic weather sweeping in, and it quickly lived up to its promise. What began as a lively sail with 20+ knots of wind soon turned into something tougher. As we closed in on Ardnamurchan Point, seas grew over 2 metres with waves coming from two directions, winds gusted 30–35 knots, and everything started to go wrong: Mast leaks & chain plates dripping below deck Guard rail coming undone Boat hook nearly lost overboard Headsail sheet tangled & tender almost pulled away Bow burying under confused seas After 12+ exhausting hours at sea, we finally turned on the engine to punch into the big waves and push round the point into shelter. 14 hours later, battered and wet but safe, we tied back up in Plockton — very ready for rest (and a well-earned curry!). Sometimes the universe works in funny ways. I've been watching Technohull for years but never had an opportunity to truly study or experience the brand in person. Recently I was boating in Greece with some new mates of mine and it turns out they are buddies with Gerry the CEO of Technohull. We sail from Port Klang down the west coast of Malaysia towards Pulau Pisang, stopping first at Port Dickson for some lighthearted team-building games. We always dreamed of sailing the seas, but there are a few things that scare me. Going overboard is one of these. Practicing safe habits and being prepared can reduce these risks. Toni and I spent last season researching life vests. There is no shortage of life vests on the market ranging from tarnished pennies to shinny nickels in cost. Most boaters know that a life vest will keep you afloat if you go overboard. However, that is a short-sighted view. The true purpose of a life vest is to keep you afloat to be rescued. This is especially challenging if sailing as a couple. If you go overboard, and your partner is not aware that you went overboard, the chance of surviving goes down with each passing minute. Even if you go overboard in front of your partner, you will quickly disappear in the waves. The life vest is the last resort. Its purpose is to keep you afloat and alive to be rescued. Do not cheap out on the life vest when sailing coastal or offshore. Of course, the best survival chance is not going overboard to begin with. Rig a proper jackline, strap in at all times, and wear your life vest. Subscribe and share the adventure!
