exploring hope town by land air and sea 49 sailing saoirse We leave Marsh Harbor for a short sail to nearby Elbow Cay to visit Hope Town. It feels like you are transported into New England. Which makes sense, because British Loyalist settled the area after fleeing America after the Revolutionary War. We visited the iconic candy stripped lighthouse, which is the last kerosene burning lighthouse in the world. What a view from the top! We were able to spot Saoirse because of her solar panels off in the distance floating in the crystal clear water. We take Oona for a walk around town. Most of the town is block from cars, so we only had to worry about the golf carts and bicycles! Our join our friends from Sailing Uma, Dan and Kika, for a GORGEOUS dive on one of the reefs nearby. and saw the most beautiful spotted eagle ray! Firefly is the prototype of a new one-design race-classic called the F-class. She is developed as a high-performance racer and optimised to race in the Spirit of Tradition class. The design brief called for "a yacht to be fast on all points of sail, both in light and heavy winds and be able to perform as well as a J-class yacht or better”. With a displacement of just below sixty tonnes and a draught of 5.2 metres, the design is extremely powerful. While the one-design class developed under the auspices of the F-Class Association allows for a lifting keel to be used, the prototype was built with a fixed keel. The deck layout can be customised. The interior of the first yacht is minimal, although a more common interior layout is also possible and accepted under the Class rules. At the event, Livorno residents and a host of yachting enthusiasts had the chance to admire first hand the Benetti and Lusben shipyards, which opened their doors to sports lovers and visitors, including many families with children, to mark the occasion. The festive spirit of Half Marathon Sunday proved to be a big win for the city of Livorno as a whole. Against the backdrop of high attendance, the Benetti shipyard threw open its doors to welcome numerous visitors in what is rapidly becoming a sporting tradition for the city. For the second year running, the committee of employees who work at the Benetti and Lusben shipyards decided to contribute to the event by organising an open day at the Company’s Livorno production site. A guided itinerary wove its way through the industrial sheds and megayachts, offering visitors the chance to visit the areas where the mega and giga yachts that have made Livorno and Tuscany a center of yacht building excellence on the world stage are created and come to life. Part 8 of a series: Sailing Miami to Key West. We anchor our trailer sail boat in very shallow water on the beach of Pace Picnic Island in Miami. I rename it "Party Island". We walk the beach and take in the view. After the party people leave, we have the island all to our self. The bright lights of Miami are beautiful at night. Workers come to the Island in early morning to pick up garbage. Ashley and I walk the entire island in the morning and decide to pull anchor and continue south.

On this Episode we hit some incredibly beautiful French islands here in the Caribbean. The underwater life is as stunning as above the waterline. We struggle with a repair of our generator and the kids start a new school year. We are the Robbins family sailing on our boat named Nikau. We are a family of 5. Our 3 kids are doing NZ correspondence school on board. They are growing to love it! What's not to love about 3 hours of school a day and then a different playground for the afternoon every day! Last week I had the pleasure of visiting the UK's most prolific boat builder, producing nearly 1000 units per year. In spite of the typically British weather, I enjoyed a day that shall stay in my memory for a very long time. The story of WILLIAMS is not just a story of how these jet tenders are built, but also a story of entrepreneurship at it's very best. The WILLIAMS factory was full of busy workers who clearly took great pride in their product...which is just as well since they can hardly build these boats quickly enough to fill the orders that are flooding in!

Getting ready for a large festival in Urzelina, us and s/v Calico Skies move our boats down from Velas. The wind seems pretty non-existant, but that's a good thing for us once we drop anchor. Because there were no sandy patches and we anchored on rocks, the chances of dragging went down and we felt comfortable to spend one night there. While on anchor watch before going to the local festivities, I cooked up some of the fish Matt had speared a few days before, and tried to make fish cakes. Without any previous skills or instructions. They did not work out well. Once on shore though, our evening was much improved as we enjoyed groups of locals dancing coreographed numbers through the street, each highlighting something special about the area. The next day we joined Fillip's family again for lunch at their man cave, before being shuttled out to his father-in-law's house, where he also grows all kinds of fruits and vegetables.
