Hi everyone! The 26th of January at 10 o'clock I set sail again to cross the furosious North Sea for Shetland to experience the Up Helly Aa vikingfestival. Strong winds up to 40 knots, heavy snow and a very long periode of complete dark rushed my little boat through huge waves all the way to landfall Shetland in 32 hours. It was an amazing experience to be in the middle of this and feel the real wrath of Mother Nature breathing heavely down my neck, making it very clear whos the boss out in these waters. And its not me. I hope you enjoy this as I hope you get the feeling of what its like to be in a small boat, listen to the threatening sounds of the wind and waves as the snow wips your face until you just get ice cold. This is big money in the Louisiades and so important to the locals for a way of earning cold hard cash. Beche de Mer season was upon the Louisiades and Wow what a vibe! The guys were out diving daily collecting their loot. The outer islands, normally uninhabited, had fishing camps everywhere. These guys were good too. They can stay down for upwards of 5 minutes and they are pros at harvesting these slimy beasts. There were racks and racks of disgusting looking sea cucumbers drying it out in preparation for the buyers. Learning to sail is an exciting journey. However, grasping the basics without expert instruction can lead to frustration. Here's a short step-by-step guide to understanding the wind, the sails, and the points of sail. This clear instructional video is the best explanation of the basics of sailing. There are three main points of sail: upwind (close-hauled), reaching (beam reach), and downwind (running). Understanding these points is crucial for controlling your boat effectively. Close-hauled is when you sail as close to the direction of the wind as possible. Reaching involves sailing across the wind. Running is sailing downwind with the wind at your back. Before setting sail, grasp the concept of wind direction and its impact on your boat. You'll need to pay attention to the wind's behavior, as it will dictate your course. Start by observing flags, ripples on the water, and the direction of smoke if present. This awareness will guide your decisions while sailing. Onboard our yacht we also have wind instruments and a wind arrow at the top of the mast to help us. Proper sail trim is vital for maximizing your boat's performance. Adjust the angle of your sails according to the wind direction to achieve the desired speed and direction. Experiment with different sail positions to find the most efficient setup for the current conditions. Manuel Cousin sera au départ de la Bermudes 1000 Race en 2019 sur l'IMOCA Groupe Sétin. Cette grande course en solitaire reliant Douarnenez à Brest en passant par les Açores et le Fasnet, est qualificative pour le vendée Globe 2020. Elle figure également au Championnat du Monde IMOCA.

As a liveaboard sailing family, our seemingly simple chores have a way of turning into full-blown MISSIONS that must successfully be accomplished for the continued safety and comfort of the crew. Take REPLENISHING YOUR WATER SUPPLY, for instance... That's something that most land-based folk don't even think about - just open the tap and a never-ending stream of water magically flows out. It's not so carefree on a boat! Your finite supply WILL run out. In some areas, we have to transport jerry cans, by dinghy, to a public water supply, and ferry water back and forth to fill our tanks. This backbreaking chore can easily take the bulk of a day depending on a variety of factors. Then consider WASHING YOUR CLOTHES... On land, it's everyday's business to have our clothes washed and dried by a pair of convenient, mostly automatic machines. Even on land, isn't it funny how we procrastinate with such WORK? On a boat, this chore is 10x more difficult. You can either wash the clothes by hand, using up a sizable portion of your precious water supply, or you can pack up all your dirty laundry, dinghy to shore, and hike to the nearest laundry facility to wash your clothes. Of course, the job is only half way done at that point because you still have to get back. Hope it's not raining! The simple truth of the matter is that simple "boat errands" have a way of turning into CRITICAL BOAT MISSIONS. Thanks for watching!! At this point, we’re about halfway into our river journey from Lake Michigan to the Gulf of Mexico. We’ve transited several locks thus far, but no other part of the route has as many locks as Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. It’s one lock right after another on the Tenn-Tom. Some are more memorable that others, making weird squeaks and screeches we’re not used to. We transit the tallest lock on our entire route, Jamie Whitten Lock (84’), where water spews from the sides of small doors in the lock wall, unnerving us both.
