With no racing possible on the final day of the Odzala Discovery Camps 52 SUPER SERIES V&A Waterfront Cape Town regatta, the 2019 circuit champions Azzurra lift the first series title of the 2020 season. Racing in South Africa for the first time ever represented something of a voyage of discovery for the 52 SUPER SERIES owners and crews, but the 10 teams from eight nations were rewarded with good racing in a variety of wind conditions, including a visit from the strong Cape Doctor wind, all set against the spectacular backdrop of Table Mountain and the Lion's Head, whilst embracing the lively, colourful, friendly welcome at the city's V&A Waterfront. Victory for Azzurra was underpinned by a dream debut for new tactician Michele Paoletti, the Italian-Argentine team actually winning their first series regatta since September 2017. After finishing runners up at four of last year's five regattas, the Azzurra team were delighted to prove they can win regattas as well as secure the season long championship, which they have won four times.

As predicted, the Cape Doctor, Cape Town's renowned strong, local south-easterly wind came in for the penultimate day of racing at the first event of the 2020 season - the Odzala Discovery Camps 52 SUPER SERIES V&A Waterfront Cape Town regatta - to produce some thrilling racing. With Morgan Larson steering, Jonathan McKee on tactics aided by Alberto Barovier on strategy, Bronenosec won the only race of the day after making the best of a significant wind shift on the first run and choosing the favoured turning mark at the leeward gate. But while the Russian-flagged team ran out winners ahead of Quantum Racing, a fourth for Hasso Plattner's local favourites on Phoenix ensures the South African team - steered by the hugely experienced Plattner - closes the gap on regatta leaders Azzurra. The defending champions lead into the last day by seven points.

Racing on their own home waters, Hasso Plattner's Phoenix 11 made a dream start to the Odzala Discovery Camps 52 SUPER SERIES V&A Waterfront - Cape Town regatta, the first event of six that comprise the 2020 52 SUPER SERIES. Local knowledge and a protracted spell of training late last year and before this season's curtain raiser played its part as Phoenix completed a textbook first race that they won comfortably. Then, after a less than perfect start to the second contest, Phoenix battled from the bottom third of the fleet to deliver a valuable third place finish. Plattner's crew lead the regatta by two points from the 2019 champions Azzurra who returned a fourth and a second, a solid debut day for new tactician Michele Paoletti. In the south westerly breeze, which picked up to 16kts for the second start and averaged 10-13 kts for the day, conditions were not easy to read - consistency proving particularly elusive. Phoenix 11, the newer of the two Plattner family TP52s, were undoubtedly the class act delivering for the home support.

Technical breakdowns unsettled Hasso Plattner's Phoenix 11 team as the 2019 circuit champions Azzurra maintained their consistent form to overhaul the local Cape Town favourites who drop to second place after four races have been sailed at the Odzala Discovery Camps 52 SUPER SERIES V&A Waterfront - Cape Town regatta. After a solid win in Race 3, the first of today, Phoenix 11 maintained their points advantage over Azzurra, which finished in second. But a pedestal winch gearing breakdown between races unsettled the local team who suffered a breakage of their aftmost port side stanchion to further compound their problems. The resulting seventh sees Plattner's crew drop two points behind the Roemmers family's Azzurra, which has sailed three second places from four starts and seems to have maintained the consistency that served them well last season, even after integrating new tactician Michele Paoletti.

After a very disappointing opening to the Odzala Discovery Camps 52 SUPER SERIES V&A Waterfront - Cape Town regatta, Harm Muller-Spreer's world champions Platoon bounced back to record a second and first today as the top scoring boat in the fleet. But, after six races have been sailed off Cape Town, it is still the 2019 overall title holders Azzurra who lead, today extending their cushion to ten points. Azzurra's consistency, posting a 3.5 point average for the day, is the result of patience, minimising risk and obviously good boat speed, while Platoon's three-points aggregate for this third day of five planned racing days, moves them to within three points of second-placed Phoenix 11. But to date all of the races have been sailed in light to moderate breezes, often one-sided drag racing off the start line. All that is widely expected to change tomorrow, Thursday, as the brisk south-easterly 'Cape Doctor' is forecast to arrive, for one day only. This could prove a decisive day in terms of shaking up the leaderboard.

If it was a red letter day for Takashi Okura's Sled, sailing to a second followed by two wins, to take themselves to the cusp of their first regatta title in more than five years on the 52 SUPER SERIES circuit, the heavyweight title match between Azzurra and Platoon swung two and fro during three exciting windward-leeward contests. With Olympic champion Santi Lange calling tactics for skipper-helm Guillermo Parada, Azzurra seemed to falter in the first light wind race, finding themselves on the wrong side of the course and seemingly unable to match Platoon for speed. At the first top mark, Harm Müller-Spreer's German-flagged world champions led and Azzurra were eighth and ninth at the first top windward mark. A strong run got them to sixth but in the busy traffic they lost two places. So Platoon immediately wrestled six points back from the 11 point cushion the jittery looking home team had taken on to the water this morning.

After a spirited head-to-head against Platoon, which spanned three, intense, three-race days, Azzurra clinched the 2019 title with one race to spare. Competing in perfect, champagne sailing conditions - 20 knots of northwesterly wind and sparkling September sunshine - a smart solo move on the final downwind of the second race today allowed them to finally put enough points on Harm Müller-Spreer's German-flagged rivals to finally render the emblematic YCCS crew uncatchable. Lead by Argentine skipper-helm Guillermo Parada with compatriot and long-time friend, Olympic champion Santiago Lange calling tactics, the Azzurra crew add to the 52 SUPER SERIES season titles won in 2012, 2015 and 2017 and draw back level, at four titles apiece, matching the record of 2018 champions Quantum Racing who today finished the season in third, just two points behind Platoon.

Winds were over 40 knots on the race area at times and though an initial postponement was signalled to 1400hrs, before then it became evident that the wind was going to remain too strong for fair, safe racing. With two possible days of racing now remaining of the 2019 season the position of the Roemmers family's Azzurra, which flies the burgee of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, becomes stronger. They have a lead of 11 points over Platoon and 16 ahead of the 2018 champions Quantum Racing. If they can secure the season championship title it would be Azzurra's fourth, adding to wins in 2012, 2015 and 2017. After the three races held yesterday Sled of Takashi Okura leads the regatta with a one point advantage over Azzurra and six points over four boats, Bronenosec, Alegre, Phoenix and Quantum, all sharing the same points aggregate.

A testing, northwesterly offshore wind of 12-17kts produced fantastic racing conditions today at the Rolex TP52 World Championship on the Bay of Palma out of Puerto Portals as Harm Müller-Spreer's Platoon took control of the title race. They posted two first places and a fifth to lead the championship by seven points going into the final day, Thursday. But for all that the 2017 world champions stepped clear of the pack today, sailing smart and fast, they did start each of the three races on the back foot, forced each time to climb through the fleet. After seven races their average points score per race remains three points.
