The annual fall migration of sailboats down the Chicago River to winter storage. Every year like ducks flying south for the winter, all of the active sailboats make the pilgrimage off of Lake Michigan into their selected winter storage destinations. As winter was closing in around us we realized now was the time to put our sailboat away. On October 17th we took our boat from Belmont Harbor to our winter storage spot called Canal Street Marina near Chinatown on the Chicago River. We started our trip at 8 am on a very cold, sunny day the temperature was about 38 degrees with a wind chill in the 20's so we were dressed like we were planning the day to go snow skiing rather than sailing. We experienced an exhilarating sail with a robust wind from behind us and the sun rising to our East. We sailed south for 4 miles just past Navy Pier to the "Chicago Locks" that connect Lake Michigan to the Chicago River. The trip to the Marina is just 4 miles down the Chicago River, we passed through 23 bridges that all had to be opened letting our group of 16 sailboats go by. It was so amazing to see all of the pedestrians lining the riverfront cheering us on. Quite the opposite was true for the motorists stuck waiting in their cars as the bridges were opened blocking their path. It's truly amazing to see these huge bridges built-in the early 1900s have the ability to open and close to allow both pleasure and commercial crafts to pass through. This is an amazing adventure that should not be missed if the opportunity presents itself. It took us about an hour to sail down to the locks and another four hours to go down the river. An annual tradition that has been going on in Chicago for over 100 years. A great way to end the sailing season. Andrea Fanfani, che ha 50 anni ed è milanese, era partito ad Agosto scorso, a bordo del suo Marchi 47 Tatì, da La Rochelle per la Longue Route, un giro del mondo in solitario senza scalo e “senza fretta” (è l’omaggio che il compianto Guy Bernardin aveva deciso di rendere a Moitissier per il 50esimo anniversario dal suo giro del mondo). E’ arrivato fino in Sudafrica, poi se l’è vista davvero brutta, come ci aveva raccontato. Vento con raffiche oltre i 70 nodi, onde che, a detta di Andrea, arrivavano all’altezza dell’albero di Tatì (18 metri). La barca si è sdraiata a 90° quattro volte! Ha così preso la decisione in Mediterraneo risalendo l’Atlantico, rinunciando alla navigazione nei mari del sud e a Capo Horn (“Ma sono felice così, non ho rimpianti, in fondo mi aspettano almeno ancora due mesi e mezzo di navigazione!”). Adesso, da Cadice, rientrato ormai in Europa (dopo una sosta a Sant’Elena), ci racconta in due video la sua avventura!

Cooking Fish Soup - Quick & Easy - Mahi Mahi - White fish - Scallops - Clams Here we cook a very easy, quick and delicious fish soup on Mahi Mahi fish, with flavors from garlic, ginger, coconut milk and tomatoes. No problem to change fish, take what you can get hold on. The scallops can you switch to clams if you want. Ingredients: Onion Garlic Ginger Chili flakes Coconut milk Fish broth Tomato pure Ketchup Carrot Potatoes Timjan Scallops or clams Mahi Mahi or white fish Salt and Peper 1: Frie up onion, garlic, ginger and chili flakes, put aside 2: Take coconut milk ad fish broth,tomato pure, ketchup,carrot, potatoes,timjan, salt and pepar. 3: Ad the onion mix. 4: Cook for 20-30min until the carrot and potatoes are soft. 5: Ad the fish and scallops/clams, cook for 3-5min, turn the heat off. 6: Let it rest for 2-3min before you serve. 7: Enjoy with sour dough bread.
