2020 will mark the 22nd running of the race, started in 1979 and moved to a biennial event in 1980. The A2B covers 753 miles, making it one of the longest ocean races on the east coast of the U.S. The challenging course combines inshore and offshore racing down the Chesapeake Bay, across the Gulfstream, and onto Bermuda. It enables sailors to fulfill a lifelong ambition of a blue water passage to an island known for its soft coral beaches, in an organized event promoting friendly competition with other boats. A number of class divisions ensure a competitive experience for both seasoned racers and more casual cruisers. A major objective of the Race is to promote the art of navigation for more sailors. A2B provides these challenges within a framework designed for safe offshore sailing. The race is technically challenging, physically taxing, and alternatively boisterous and serene. Over 600 yachts have participated in A2B over the years. Thousands of crew members having experienced the thrill and beauty of a blue water passage as a result of this intense and challenging event. Arriving into Uruguay was tough, we got into a massive weather mess, full of squalls, contrary winds, gusts...everything you do not want to have in the last stretch of the race. But we got it all and eventually managed to get trough it and secure our 3rd position into Punta del Este. Thanks! Cardinals & Danger Marks are important for any navigator to understand well. Failing to do so may mean your boat ending up on a reef. There is a logic to Cardinals that is easy once explained. Isolated Danger Marks (0:36) Black & red colour, two black balls as a day shape, to indicate an isolated danger. Cardinals (01:47) A cardinal is like a policeman saying "You must stay ____ of me". So a North Cardinal is a policeman saying "You must stay North of me". And so on. North Cardinal is two arrows pointing up. South Cardinals is two arrows pointing down. East Cardinal is the top arrow pointing up, the bottom arrow pointing down (kinda like an egg, think E is for egg) West Cardinal is the top arrow pointing down, the bottom arrow pointing up (kinda like a sideways W) The Color System for Cardinals (03:18) Here is the logic: arrows point to black. So if you see black at the top, that is North (points to black). If you see black in between yellow (ie. from the top it goes yellow, black, yellow), that is West (points to black). And so on. The Light Signature for Cardinals (04:13) The logic here is the clockface: an East Cardinal flashes three times (ie. 3 o'clock), the West Cardinal flashes nine times (ie. 9 o'clock). North Cardinal is a constant flasher, and South Cardinal flashes six short, one long (ie. 6 o'clock, the long flasher confirming it is a South Cardinal). Here we explore Indian River, which was featured in Pirates of the Caribbean. It is beautiful. I am still alone on Chichime, San Blas Islands. In the last days the weather is getting worse, one rain shower after another. After a 17 hour thunderstorm I am fed up and start my first sailing trip alone to bring trampi and me back to the safe Shelter Bay Marina. About 90 miles ahead of me, but I have the fun of my life. Our first days in Thailand and we meet this new blonde bomb shell! https://www.sailingnandji.com/ In this episode of Sailing Nandji, after a couple of days at sea, we arrive back to the island of Phuket in Thailand. After spending 5 months in remote Indonesia we were craving the simple things in life that a developed tourist area offers. Western food and supermarkets, wine and lots of people! Bonita makes the most of being able to get dressed up and look pretty and then is left alone with the scissors... It is good to be back in Thailand where everything just feels easier and more free. We have a tradition now that when ever we complete a passage we hunt for the nearest beer and burger for breakfast! We happen to drop anchor next to Uncle's boat and it is great to see this legend again and celebrate his birthday! With full bellies and big smiles, we relax into Thailand life again and prepare for the onward journey. With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we have returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south to Chagos and across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! The adventure is just beginning as we plan to sail our Nandji around the world!! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! After getting the hook set Camille goes ashore with Mr. Steady while I watch massive schools of fish swim under the boat! The water in the anchorage is so clear you can see the bottom perfectly even in the 30ft depth. After returning to the boat Camille goes snorkeling and I feed the fish with breadcrumbs so Camille can see the feeding frenzy. After a nice sunset we enjoy dinner and contemplate a night adventure. Not the most fun day on Hakuna BUT since they're still things that need to get done, we decided to record it for you. Just in case you were wondering, we solved the dirty situation with black water tank by inserting a hose through the through-hole and turning on water with high pressure, this was the magic trick to unclog it. FYI: The black water tank was NOT dumped in the bay, not only is it nasty but also ILLEGAL. We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. The Eye Splice is a quick and easy way to create a loop in single braided rope, it can be completed in a couple of minutes once you know how. The simplest version requires you to know the length of rope you need and for both ends of the rope to be free. This makes it impossible to complete if one end is already fixed. This can be an issue if you are splicing off a spool of rope or if one of your rope end needs to be spliced to a fixed object. There is however an easy variant of the splice which can be completed when one end of the line is fixed, giving you the flexibility to splice both ends of the line, avoiding the use of knots which weaken the breaking strength of your line. The key to eye splice with one end fixed is taking the twist out of the tail before it is hidden in the main line. The splice will work without this step, but will have lower breaking strain due to the twist. So to be sure to maintain the breaking strength of you line don't leave out this critical step when one end of the line is fixed.
