We spend a day on land exploring what Samana and the surrounding area has to offer. With Louis as our tour guide we head off to the Limon Waterfall where we ride horses through the jungle to one of the most beautiful waterfalls we have seen yet on our travels. After a refreshing swim we head back to our horses. We also visit a local food market and stop at a cigar factory and learn all about Dominican Republic cigars and also some alternative medicine. In a freak accident I lost our entire downwind whisker pole overboard. And now I get to build one from scratch. The big question- how much will it cost? The cruisers code is kind of like the Good Samaritan law, except at sea! We begin this episode by helping our friends Bill & Grace on @CalicoSkiesSailing sort out a problem with their fuel. After clogging 17 filters on the trip south I decided to pitch in and help them sort out the problem. Plus, it’s always fun working someone else’s boat :) With Calico Skies in good shape we turn our eyes towards our own projects and move Delos to a friends dock in Boca Raton. We have a pretty fat project list, with building a new downwind whisker pole topping the list. The poles used on Delos are a custom design and not available off the shelf so I need to create a carbon copy of the pole I lost from scratch. After sourcing the raw materials I spend some time running from the metal warehouse to the machine shop to the fabricator. At least we’re making progress….. Many hugs and hope you liked the video! Being stopped by police when sailing in foreign waters is always a worry, especially when we don't have our passports with us. In this episode we sail overnight from the Mentawai islands back to mainland Sumatra to deal with our final visa extension and return to Cubadak Island for our first ever night diving experience. We leave the Jardines and head to Cayo Cuervo in southern Cuba. I am hoping to trade with a shrimp trawler, get some prawns from them in exchange for some rum. We find out that the trawlers are on another cay, so that will just have to wait. But we find a tiny island that you could throw a stone across with crystal clear water and coral reefs surrounding it. #89 Transat partie 6 Nous avons mal dormi, peut-être la chaleur en est-elle la cause ! La température a bien augmenté de 15º C depuis la Namibie. Et puis, il arrive parfois que la nuit éveille des craintes, aucune qui n’est une raison d’être, juste une sorte d’anxiété sur d’éventuelles éventualités ! Mon capitaine m’a avoué être gagné, lui aussi, de temps à autres, par cet égarement nocturne ! Ça ne dure jamais longtemps, la modération nous revoyant vite à nos songes … Nous avons ajusté nos horloges, avec cette heure en moins nous sommes rendus à onze heures locale à 11º37'116 sud ; 19º23'400 ouest, soit 141,9 milles depuis hier, la moitié entre Sainte Helene et Jacaré, il nous reste 931 milles à parcourir… 4 avril, encouragé par ses deux triangles porteurs, Black Lion, endurant, fait défiler sous sa carène l’abyssal bleu, perçant de clarté. Nous entamons notre neuvième journée depuis Sainte Helene, au total, dix-huit sans toucher terre, toutes ces heures en dissociement total avec les activités humaines renforcent notre union avec la nature, nous font essayer de la comprendre, de l’interpréter et de donner un sens à ses manifestations. Force est de constaté qu’après quatre mois dans des régions plutôt fraiches et quasiment un mois en mer, notre ligne en a pris un coup, là je ne parle pas de notre ligne de flottaison bien sûre, quoi que ! Work is continuing to progress and Shayne has made some beautiful carbon components for Paikea. We have decided to raise the attachment points for the new trampoline net we have purchased. It means we have had to remove and fill in hatches and glue on new tubes to tie the new net to. Shayne has had to design a new anchor roller arrangement for the carbon front beam. And we have come up with a new placement for our navigation lights which we hope will keep them out of the way of sheets and sails. Shayne also gives a little bit of an insight into the original use of our bow pole. We are recycling an old America's Cup mast into our longeron and bow pole and you can still see the attachment points for sheaves and stays. As Shayne used to build these masts, we thought it would be interesting to share what is going on with the build of these. We have a month to go before we want to set sail again and the list is still a mile long. We have decided to just give ourselves a deadline and get out of here as the kids are growing up quickly and think that sailing life involves hanging out in a boat yard! Tarde o temprano la bomba del WC comienza a filtrar. Cuando esto ocurre tenemos dos opciones, cambiar las juntas de goma interiores, venden los Kit de repuestos, o cambiar el cuerpo completo. Desde nuestra experiencia podemos decir que el cambio mas rentable y eficaz es el del cambio del cuerpo completo. Hemos cambiado las gomas en alguna ocasión, y al final el ajuste no es bueno, y en poco tiempo comienza a dar otros problemas. Os dejo el video y veréis que el cambio es muy simple.

The title says it all. I get the rudder into its final shape, the cabin sole boards are nearing completion, and I get some rubbing strip around the top of the anchor chain storage box. Meanwhile, an old friend returns.... This is the story of the building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. The videos are a week-by-week record of the build as it progresses and aim to show as much detail as possible of the various aspects of the build.
