Inför min bok Ta rodret, kvinna! tog jag kontakt med olika båtmekaniker, och frågade dem vad som är de vanligaste motorproblemen som båtägare råkar ut för. Svaret överraskade mig: ”Det är väldigt sällan problem med dieselmotorer om du gör regelbunden service på dem”. Om du använder båten som fritidsbåt, är det lagom att göra denna service varje år. Det är den servicen jag beskriver i denna serie. Del 1 beskriver flödet av diesel, olja och kylvatten genom motorn. Del 2 förklarar i detalj hur du byter bränslefiltren och luftar motorn. Del 3 berättar om det yttre och inre systemet med kylvatten, filter och byte av impeller. Del 4 handlar om oljebyte och oljefilter. Skaffa dig en bra handbok över din motor. Om du inte redan har en, kan du troligast skriva ut en från nätet. Sök efter motorbeteckningen, den hittar du på en liten skylt någonstans på motorn. Du behöver veta motortypen för att köpa rätt filter mm. Ibland finns två olika handböcker. After our special Marquesan Christmas in the main village of Vaitahu, we continue sailing down Tahuata's coast to Hapatoni - a small but super picturesque village smelling of frangipani & coprah. We marvel at the originally hand-crafted Polynesian outriggers surrounded by steep lush green mountains covered with palm and dragon trees. Ilja jumps into the water to find spinner dolphins that live there. We return to Hiva Oa to finish our last preparations for our Pacific Crossing from West to East - a challenging job with prices exploding in the supermarket shelves and gendarmes that don't want to let out check out. A few short weeks ago, things were looking great! We had done lots of preparation to get ready for Spring Launch, with all sorts of thinking and planning and dreaming about the 2021 boating season! And then we found gas in the bilge! Gas and gas fumes are dangerous and you don't mess around with that stuff! Where was it coming from??? The marina owners worked with us to figure out the source of the leak, and to figure out the next steps - it looks very much like a fuel leak in the starboard fuel tank. So - drain the tank, flush the bilge, and reassess the situation. And there might be a way to salvage the season! With the fuel tank eventually drained, we could start bashing on with getting the boat ready for launch - but time wasn't on our side! Overall, it could have been much worse. We found the leak while on the hard, which is much better than finding out when you're enjoying a leisurely cruise, or when it might be too late. Stay tuned! And wish us luck!!
