Wow, is this really what it looks like? 😳 Here's some footage of our Lagoon 42 catamaran sailing from Ibiza to the mainland of Spain! Happy to share how we were surfing the waves that day at the Mediterranean Sea. This video really does a good job of showing the way the boat interacts with the waves and how she performs in these conditions. It's may seem a bit intense, but that crossing was actually superb! Swiss Sailing League Youth Cup 2021 Oberhofen

The DeFever line of trawlers has enjoyed an incredible acceptance by the boating market since first being introduced in the 1970s and is still going strong. Arthur DeFever is responsible for the designs and his name is on the brand, but the history of how these trawlers were actually built is one that can’t be told without the man running the yards, Wilson Lin. A Taiwan native, Wilson was involved early in yacht construction and one of the first designs he worked on was the Doug Peterson / Jack Kelly 44 foot cruising sailboat. There is a San Diego connection in Wilson’s life as Jack Kelly introduced Arthur DeFever, who was looking for a place to have his designs built, to Wilson Lin. Wilson and Arthur formed a mutual bond of trust which led to over three decades of collaboration. When they met, Wilson was in his 30’s and Arthur in his 60’s. Wilson has an excellent command of the English language and as a native Taiwanese he would translate and encourage his team to keep getting better. Arthur was later in his career, renowned worldwide for his naval architecture so it was an inspiring pairing. Arthur and Wilson spent a lot of time together over many years of business and friendship. The two worked together closely at Wilson’s yards in Taiwan and later China and their business partnership included many back and forth meetings in San Diego, CA and other US locations. Wilson is a good listener, and an active world traveler. In addition to time with Arthur DeFever, Wilson received many of the owners and dealers as guests who flew over to Asia to visit him at his yards to see first-hand the care and attention to construction. This was a never-ending collaboration to contribute to the building of this iconic brand. Arthur knew what he wanted from his designs and how they should be completed. Wilson is very focused on attention to detail. Together they worked closely to insure Wilson and his team were able to provide the right quality and value to please the American market. Wilson learned by doing, listening, improving and creating. This pursuit of excellence enabled Wilson to oversee the production of over 500 DeFever’s. Wilson’s talent spans the management of three yards in Taiwan, and culminating in the POCTA location in China where DeFever’s were built starting in 1990. Wilson is proud to think of each boat that left his yard as a daughter, and he remains interested in hearing how each of them is doing. Jeff Merrill has been involved with the sale of several brokerage DeFever’s and has been in the marine industry as long as Wilson, but they have never done any business together. Jeff was helping a client buy a DeFever 44 which led to an impromptu email introduction to Wilson. The two traded notes and this led to an opportunity to meet together in person for the first time. Jeff recorded the two of them talking at the end of a dock in Newport Beach, CA and Wilson followed up by supplying the majority of the photos included. Thanks for watching Episode 6. What do cruiser's do with all of their time? Quite a lot as this episode demonstrates 😉. It starts out with pizza night aboard Delos. We make the dough (from scratch of course) early in the morning and as the day goes on we work on the toppings. It's a labor of love making homemade pizza but when enjoying it with our cruising buddies Brian, Kazza & Nugget it's well worth the effort. Next we set out to explore Texas Rock a renowned dive site several miles from our anchorage. We are scuba diving this amazing, 40-50ft deep spot and encounter incredible coral and fish including giant Gray Angelfish and a variety of psychedelic coral. Though the Dry Tortugas checks many boxes it is not out of the hurricane zone and our goal is to escape the North/South seasonal run this year. That means we're leaving the US for the foreseeable future and heading first to Mexico. To prepare for the passage we sail back up to Key West to provision and get fuel. Then we enjoy the most incredible downwind Spinnaker sail on our way back down to the Dry Tortugas which will be our jump off point for Mexico. On one of our last sails in the US we enjoy idyllic conditions and if you like sailing you will love watching this passage. After most of the day we switch to the code zero as we make our way into the Dry Tortugas and around the giant fort. Ok so now what? We ordered this sail almost 12 weeks ago and it has finally arrived. We were watching some of our sailing counterparts and learning from them, discovered that the majority of them ordered all their new sails from Precision Sail. Nach der Stehenden Mastroute ging es für uns endlich raus auf die Nordsee. Endlich wieder Salzwasser unterm Kiel! Die Gezeiten und damit verbundenen Strömungen haben es uns jedoch oft erschwert vorwärts zu kommen. Auch die Verkehrszonen vor Rotterdam und Seebrügge waren bei Abend und Nacht nicht so leicht zu durchqueren. Dennoch haben wir uns immer sicher gefühlt und hatten keine größeren Probleme. Den ersten größeren Test haben Manatee und Crew gut überstanden. Der Ärmelkanal ist so gut wie bezwungen. We are less that 4 weeks from departure so I get some projects done while we still have a comfortable space to tie up. Then I put the tools away as a couple familiar faces come aboard, so we cut the lines and head on out for what may well be our last big outing in the San Juan Islands!

Recipe for one: 1 and 1/2 oz Vodka (you usually want to use upper-shelf Vodka when making martini's...reach for Grey Goose, Kettle One, Belvedere...you get the idea) 1/2 oz fresh lemon juice 1/2 oz Cointreau or Grand Marnier 1/2 oz cinnamon demerara simple syrup Shake like crazy and strain into a sugar-rimmed glass We chose to get fancy and use some mace as garnish. Mace is the outside of a nutmeg and has a very unique flavor.
