The time has finally come for us to leave the U.S for the foreseeable future and point our bow towards distant shores once more! We are in the Dry Tortugas staging for a weather window to Isla Mujeres, Mexico. Luckily there is no lack of entertainment here as we wait for weather. With settled weather we decide to take Delos out on a dive mission. We've heard rumors of a huge goliath grouper in the area and we are seeking him out! Bill, Brian, and Kazza go on the first dive, and it isn't long before Bill spots the grouper hiding out under the Wind Jammer wreck. The grouper is huge, about the size of a fully grown man. Grace is up on the second dive and we seek to show her the grouper. We find it and she is taken aback (and a little scared 🤣) of this huge fish Just like that, our weather window arrives. We start prepping the boat for passage, getting the dinghy motor off and dinghy securely fastened with ratchet straps. This passage requires crossing the Gulf Stream twice and we provide a detailed explanation of our strategy and sail plan for each leg of the journey. We opt to setup the code zero at anchor before we get in a seaway and begin to raise the anchor. Régate des 5 jours du léman en voilier Surprise appelé Silure Avec Jonathan et Domenico. Les "Cinq jours du Léman", organisé par le Cercle de la Voile de Vidy, est la plus longue régate d'endurance en bassin fermé d'Europe. Il s'agit d'effectuer le plus grand nombre de tours du lac Léman en cinq jours. Les bateaux sont tous des monotypes de type Surprise et l'équipage est exclusivement composé de deux navigateurs. Welcome to the beautiful Smokanagan! 😷 This is my first experience in this land of the fires🔥 Josh kept saying to me we need to embrace all these warm and clear days in June and July and I couldn't understand why he was so adamant about it....well my friends now I get it. We have been stuck in the smoke for almost 3 weeks now and we are making the most of it but what an eerie feeling it is on the water. We want to try and sail ⛵but when you can't see 100 yards in front of you it makes for a scary day. So I guess for the time being we have to motor around this beautiful socked in lake and be thankful that we are still safe and not on evac alert. It is an amazing job that all the fire fighters are doing and if it wasn't for them we would be in worse shape than we are right now. With a dream to sail the Atlantic one day, Maryanne (Scotland) met Kyle (USA) in 2002 and setting abut turning her dream into reality. They kicked their adventures on a 25 foot monohull on Lake Eerie and 19 years later they have not only crossed together but have also crossed the Pacific 5 times and have spent the last decade as live aboard cruisers. They share the tales of their travels including the strangest Customs border clearance ever experienced, in a tiny coastal town in Ireland. They also share the sad story of the loss of their brand new catamaran in a storm, when a lee shore anchorage pushed them aground on the coast of Italy and the stress of flying home to the USA to find a replacement yacht and decided to restart their adventures on an 2001 Fountaine-Pajot Athena 38 named Begonia, which they live on today. The day our son stopped breathing SO scary Ep 118 We have visited the four furthest points on the compass of Australia's mainland. A small achievement for us as we enter Shark Bay, Western Australia. Unfortunately we wouldn't be here long, Declan injured his wrist when he failed to commit to the back flip he was performing. Landing on his wrist he had a suspected fracture. With no x-ray facility in the bay we were forced to move on quickly, continuing our journey north, heading to Carnarvon hospital to get the boy checked out. It took us back to when he was four weeks old and nearly died. Indeed he stopped breathing several times. It was so scary and we feel blessed every day to have him here with us. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. His first taste of a blue water ocean crossing. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and Rachel purchased Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 18, Declan 16 and Ivan 13, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Hawksbill Cay was a surprise gem! We were not expecting much and it turned out to be one of our favorite places to visit. We only had a day to spend at the island so we took advantage of the time, as much as possible. Upon arrival, I hiked up to the sailors' cross on the hill. It was a great view from the top as the sun set. The next morning we took the dinghy to the southern part of the island and it was spectacular! One of the most intense battles, both on the water and under IRC corrected time, in this year’s Rolex Fastnet Race played out in IRC Three. Here the scratch boat was unquestionably the JPK 1030 Léon, skippered by the defending IRC Three and Two-Handed champion and former overall winner of the Rolex Fastnet Race, Alexis Loison, racing yet again doublehanded, but this time with Guillaume Pirouelle. Interesting was the diversity of crew make-ups: Fully crewed, doublehanded or mixed doublehanded, it seemed to make no difference to the competitiveness of the top boats. While the lead doublehanders in IRC Four were occasionally in the mix, it was mainly the doublehanded crews in IRC Three that held the top places in the IRC Two-Handed ranking. After surviving Sunday’s brisk start, the battle for the front of IRC Three, as the boats tackled the stiff beat down the Channel, as usual was down to picking the shifts and playing the tide. Sadly some British Sun Fast 3300s teams had not made it through - Kelvin Rawlings and Stuart Childerley (hoping to repeat their IRC Two-Handed victory from 2015) opted out of the race as James Harayda and Dee Caffari on Gentoo retired with a ripped mainsail. Another, Swell, sailed by double Olympic gold medallist Shirley Robertson and Volvo Ocean Race sailor Henry Bomby, was also having a hard time having been OCS, although they had managed to recover well from their premature start, overhauling Léon by the Needles. But then as Bomby recounted, they “got Portland Bill wrong - we were playing for a left shift, so our main rivals got four or five miles ahead of us in the first six hours. So we had to play catch up from there.” At 0600 on the first morning, the Sun Fast 3600 Fujitsu British Soldier skippered by Henry Foster, had nosed into the lead, hugging the shore at Start Point with Louis-Marie Dussere’s JPK 1080 Raging-bee², Philippe Girardin’s J/120 Hey Jude and Raging-bee² neck and neck for the lead to the south. The British Army remained out in front as they sniggled around the Lizard coastline and continued on in the lead – just - as they diving south of the Land's End TYSS and up its west side. At the Fastnet Rock on the early hours of Wednesday morning, it remained tight on the water, but the lower-rated Léon led over Raging-bee² and Hey Jude by 45 minutes with Fujitsu British Soldier 13 minutes further back. At this stage Swell was 1 hours 19 minutes behind under corrected time. Half way into the return journey to Bishop Rock Fujitsu British Soldier and Hey Jude stayed west as Raging-bee² had nosed ahead of Léon to the east. By being further east still, Swell gained by being able to lay the east side of the TSS west of the Scilly Isles, as the boats ahead lost out, having to gybe to avoid it. But the major hurdle ahead was the ridge that engulfed the fleet late on Wednesday into the early hours of Thursday, that parked the fleet. Here the Fujitsu British Soldier crew made the decision to head west of the TSS. This worked out badly for them and they remained more firmly stuck than the boats to the east. Hey Jude and Swell came out best in this reshuffle along with doublehanders Olivier Burgaud and Sylvain Pontu on their JPK 1080 Aileau just to their south.

Since arriving in Cowes for the 44Cup all eight teams had been expecting conditions to build for the second day of racing and with 20-24knots to kick things off, that was precisely what was delivered. But as if easing the fleet into the day, the east going tide was kind to the fleet holding them back from the line at the start and keeping the sea state relatively flat. As the day progressed and the tide turned against the breeze, the fun dial was wound up. The wind speed built, the sea state increased and the downwind legs became full-on foam-ups.
