Sailing around the world and learning about the fate of new people we meet can be very emotional - especially in so-called "hub ports" where life-changing decisions are made and people from all over the world get together for a certain amount of time. Shelter Bay Marina is such a "hub port" as people cross through a continent with their boat, then leaving all availabilities, now being dependent on their own in the Pacific. Others head back across the moody, often raging Caribbean Sea. Also not as easy which is why some sailors - mostly due to Covid - bury their dream of sailing around the world here. And then there's also people that turn up that you wouldn't expect here - like a traditional, indigenous Kuna woman pouring out her heart. Encounters not as easy to swallow but making you think. 🌟Janna was not wearing a mask 😷 due to the fact that we had just received our negative Covid test results needed prior Bahama departure. The lady was asked beforehand whether this was ok for her with Janna just listening 2 seats away. 🌺Special thanks go to our friend Merle Meierhöfer helping with the Spanish translations from half way around the world! 1000 Dank Merle, du bist ein Schatz! *No guarantees for 100% correctness. *AN UPDATED VIDEO HAS BEEN UPLOADED* A question I get most asked is "how do I apply gelcoat" while the answer is never a quick or short one, I decided to make a very quick how to video explaining how to get the first layer of gel on your boat. Updated video- https://youtu.be/qRMnVMCmup4 In this video I show how to apply the gelcoat over a semi set layer of fiberglass and polyester resin ( of course its totalboat stuff ) Here I use a roller and a cheap chip brush. My preferred method is spraying the gelcoat, but this is the best method for something we're just going to sand later. In a video to come ill show my method for applying laminating gelcoat, with one final layer of waxed gelcoat. Thanks for watching, don't forget to subscribe!! Oh and use those discount codes. Sailing from Townsville to Magnetic island where we explore the island by car and boat. It’s off to Orpheus island to explore this incredible island by dingy and walking the beaches and cliffs. We ended up coming across a couple of crocodiles at Hinchinbrook island.
We reached Cairns, the northern most point of our Great Barrier Reef sailing this season and, while we wait for the winds to turn northerly we took the opportunity to explore this tropical wonderland. The Skyrail cable car over the rain forest to the Barron Falls and Kuranda was high on our to do list and certainly did not disappoint. It’s a must for any visitor to Far North Queensland. West of the Golden Gate Bridge, shrouded in fog, we roll from the Fort Scott batteries, under the bridge, through the Presidio to an overlook perched over Crissy Field Beach. Lots of good stuff in this one. Please like, share, subscribe or just comment below and share your thoughts on the video. Enjoy!
East side beachfront of the Golden ate Bridge called Crissy Field. Descending down from the Presidio bluffs into the half-beach half-park on a mostly sunny day. The beachfront guides you into a photogenic marina with a killer view of Alcatraz. Just remember to hang out at the Wave Organ there. I was just trying to enjoy the beach, but then tall above the trees a magnificent dome caught my eye and pulled me in like a magnet. I then attempted to go full Spielberg. http://www.palaceoffinearts.com/ HISTORY "Following the devastating 1906 earthquake and fire, San Francisco was inspired to show the world how it had risen from the ashes. So, in 1910, business and civic leaders convened to discuss making the city the site of the century’s first great world’s fair, a grand exposition to honor the completion of the Panama Canal. In two hours, $4 million was raised and San Francisco beat competitors like New Orleans and Washington, D.C. to host the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Widely considered the most beautiful structure at the exhibition, the Palace of Fine Arts is the work of California architect, Bernard Maybeck. Inspired by a Piranesi engraving that features a Roman ruin reflected in a swimming pool, Maybeck’s masterpiece was the mirror of a ruin that existed, not for its own sake, but to show “the mortality of grandeur and the vanity of human wishes.” Like other features of the fair, the Palace was meant to come down at the close of the fair — and the rest… is history. Now by hosting your event here with Non Plus Ultra, you and your guests can write the next chapter of this icon in the National Register of Historic Places in San Francisco. Get swept away in the history and romance of the Palace of Fine Arts and book your event with us today! EXHIBITION CENTER The iconic Palace of Fine Arts Exhibition Center provides an astonishing venue for your event that’s sure to impress your guests before they even walk in the door. With its Greco-Roman rotunda and colonnades, immaculately planted grounds, lagoon, and super-spacious exhibition center and theater, this San Francisco treasure brings the wow factor to corporate events, private parties, trade shows, conferences, galas, weddings, and more. Managed by Non Plus Ultra, San Francisco’s premiere events management company, the Palace of Fine Arts is conveniently located just moments away from the Golden Gate Bridge. Take a look below at some of the versatile uses of this iconic landmark: CORPORATE EVENTS + TRADE SHOWS + GALAS • 140,000 sq. ft. of indoor space • 5,000-person capacity • On-site management • On-site parking • 55’, 48’, and 37’ foot tall ceilings • Smaller Concourse Level Areas • Hangar Pavilion (17,000 sq. ft.) • Atrium (13,500 sq. ft.) • 10 break-out rooms and classrooms (1,000 – 2,800 sq. ft. each) • 4 Smaller Mezzanine Level Areas (2,100 – 3,700 sq. ft. each) • 135-person performing arts theater • Power and Wi-Fi capabilities • Truck loading dock WEDDINGS • Ceremony Hall • Bridal Suite and Groom’s Room • Event security • White folding chairs, tables, and linens for 150 people • Event logistics management • Timeline creation and execution • Vendor confirmations and checklists • Rehearsal prep and management • Day of event team with 1 event lead and 2 assistants SPECS • Ground Floor – 120,000 square feet • Mezzanine – 20,000 square feet • 55’, 48’, and 37’ foot tall ceilings • Multiple break out rooms • Power and Wi-Fi capabilities • Truck load-in dock

It is nearly September and the hard dodger is complete, so it's time to cast off the mooring hawser and head out on a short cruise up the Maine coast. Even with the help of my 3.5hp outboard, Maine presents many challenges to the engineless or under powered sailor. Tidal currents are a factor. Add to that a lot of fickle winds and a coastline strewn with reefs and ledges. Yikes! Luckily I was spared the fourth factor: dense fog. On the other hand, Maine is a gunkholers' delight, offering some of the finest anchorages anywhere. So we pack our bags, cameras, and head over the the mainland. Our buddy Juan picks us up for a mini road trip to Tulum powered by tacos and beer. Day 3 of the Show brought more than one surprise. The Bering 70 was a fascinating yacht and the owner of the shipyard was an interesting character who clearly knows what his mission is; to create simple, robust, cost effective yachts. The Baglietto 40 too was a tremendous yacht, and it's great to see such a historic Italian shipyard making it's mark on the industry again. The biggest surprise of all though came after my tour of the Bering 😂
The HOLY GRAIL OF OFFSHORE CRUISING is sailing downwind in the trade winds. We have now sailed across 3 oceans using the trade winds. In this short bonus video we will share how we set Florence up to make the most of sailing in the trade winds as we sail west across the Indian Ocean, hundreds of miles offshore and out of sight of land. From setting the spinnaker pole to sail wing on wing, to preventing chafe and reducing roll by using a staysail. We have been sailing around the world for over 5 years after setting off from England in 2016 on board our 37ft sail boat Florence. Join us as we share the highs and lows of travelling around the world by boat, Sailing offshore across the Oceans and exploring remote locations with our own little tiny house. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. @Barefoot Doctors Sailing - Catch up with our story 3 weeks after our Leopard 50 burnt to the bottom of the ocean and now we are working to decide what we are going to do with our lives.... Are we going to sail again? If we are, what boat is the ideal long distance cruising boat? Learn the steps in the process and the sort of decisions you need to make for yourself. At the end of the day, we all make different choices from each other due to personal preference - no answer is correct for everyone so anyone TELLING YOU what to do is WRONG! Here we go through the choices that you will need to consider in the process of choosing a boat and we share some important steps to avoid you making the wrong choice for yourself! Binge watch and come barefoot with us as we travel and explore the planet, mostly from the water but sometimes through the minds of others as we provide aid and support where needed through the amazing TUFMINDS solutions! The free TUFMINDS program is released as a smartphone program under the Exqisit Life Foundation Charity, a registered not for profit and requires financial support to fund the free program. TUFMINDS saves lives by intervening at the point of suicide and pulling everyone to higher levels of mental resilience, wellbeing and functioning. it also creates better attitudes, resilience and coping - all very important for sailors facing difficult situations at sea. @Barefoot Doctors Sailing Donations to the charity to support Suicide Prevention with the free TUFMINDS program can be made at: https://shoutforgood.com/charities/ex... After leaving Darwin and crossing the border into the Northern Territory we head to our first destination in the Kimberley's, the Berkley River. With so much to see, we have had to break the Berkley River into to parts. In this episode we visit First Creek, Pauls Creek and then take our catamaran No Regrets up Casuarina Creek to get an iconic photo of our yacht at the base of the waterfalls #seawind1260 #berkleyriver #kimberleys #westernaustralia #casuarinacreek
Highlights of what happened globally in the sport of Sailing in the last 7 days. As we've seen, the weather in Porto Cervo, prior to the start of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, was anything but perfect. Super-sailor Bouwe Becking showed us, via his Instagram post. When the action in the 31st Maxi Yacht ROLEX Cup started, the weather was perfect for the huge fleet. It was five days of competition for yachts over 60 feet. All the superstars were there, both the boats, and the crews, Lake Garda was the venue for the Moth Worlds, and those who were not in Sardinia were there. Aussie Tom Slingsby led the huge fleet of moths buzzing around the course. The 139th Kiel Week, commenced last week and the Ilca 4 class started with two races in light winds. Mid-way in the Maxi Yacht ROLEX Cup, saw the competition hotting up both on and off the water. The footage is stunning. At Riva del Garda Italy: Nefeli was the winner of the third event of the Melges 24 European Sailing Series. It sets the scene for the up and coming Melges 24 European Championship in Portoroz, Slovenia, this week The YOUTH FOILING GOLD CUP act two's finals were held over the past three days, and saw Young Azzurra competing against the five teams that were still in the running: Dutch Sail, Team France, Fraglia Vela Riva, Okalys Youth Project and Amor. Here is Dutch-sail story. Australian Tom Slingsby, has taken full control of the 2021 Moth World Championship after 12 races. Competing with 139 other moths sailors, Slingsby had won 11 races and held a 24 point advantage over Australians Iain Jensen and Nathan Outteridge nine points further back in third. The M32 Europeans were last week on Lake Garda before having to relocate to Miami Florida, for their worlds. Day 2 of Kieler Woche was last Sunday, and the Europe Class, and Ilka 4's, were out racing with gusto. The girls were also featuring in the ILKAS. The star class is still to come. The final days of the World Moth Championships, were Days 5 and 6, and Tom Slingsby had practically a clean sweep of the first placings. All Goobs, Francesco, Goody, and the other 137 could do, was look at his foiling wake.

Sailing J-35 "BOOMERANG" off southern Door County, Wisconsin off Little Sturgeon Bay and Riley's Bay on what started out as a light air day and changed to being a bit more brisk and sporty later in the afternoon. Even on the relatively protected waters of the Bay of Green Bay conditions can change rapidly requiring vigilance. Thank you for watching and sailing along.
