🌺Ia Orana, Le 20 décembre 2020, je quitte les Iles Marquises avec l'objectif d'atteindre Rapa Nui (Ile de Pâques). Le vent du nord est faible, 5 à 8 noeuds contre 13 annoncés . J'atteind les îles Gambier en 10 jours en plein weekend du nouvel an ! Je reprend la mer 3 jours plus tard, toujours vers l'Est ! La première semaine, les vents sont favorables passant de Nord-Est à Sud-Est et permettant de doubler l'Archipel des Iles Pitcairn avec des assez bons bords. Les deux semaines suivantes, le vent passe plein Est, m'obligeant à tirer de longs bords vers le nord. Il me faudra 26 jours pour atteindre l'Ile de Pâques depuis Mangareva ! L'Armada m'accueille à la tombée de la nuit et m'oblige à m'amarrer à une bouée qui cède pendant la nuit ! Heureusement, l'alarme GPS du mouillage retentis me premettant de réagir juste à temps après 500 mètres de dérive en pleine direction du rivage !!! Je pose alors mon ancre malgrè l'interdiction.... Au petit matin, une douzène de personnes montent à bord : Armada, police aux frontières, cellule sanitaire, etc. Pendant une heure je remplie des papiers de toutes les couleurs mais ne suis pas autorisée débarquer sur l'île. Une personne doit rester à bord en permanence. Peu importe ! Mon but n'était pas de faire du tourisme à l'Ile de Pâques, ma motivation était d'y retrouver mon compagnon bloqué sur l'ile depuis 11 mois depuis le tout début du coronavirus ! La mission est alors accomplie. Je sais désormais que tout est possible, il suffit d'y croire, fort, avec le coeur. The wind is north and light, 5 to 8 knots against 13 expected. I reached the Gambier Islands in 10 days in the middle of the New Year's weekend! I go back to sea 3 days later, still heading east! The first week, the winds are favorable going from North-East to South-East and allowing to pass the Archipelago of the Pitcairn Islands with fairly good edges. The following two weeks, the wind passes due east, forcing me to pull long tacks towards the north. It will take me 26 days to reach Easter Island from Mangareva! The Armada welcomes me at nightfall and forces me to tie up to a buoy that gives way during the night! Fortunately, the GPS alarm of the anchorage sounded, allowing me to react just in time after 500 meters of drift in the direction of the shore !!! I then put my anchor in spite of the ban .... In the early morning, a dozen people boarded: Armada, border police, health cell, etc. For an hour I filled out papers of all colors but was not allowed to land on the island. One person must remain on board at all times. No matter ! Well, we made it to Mexico! And that mean's we're officially back to Cruising Life and done with Passage Life, at least until the next time. There are a few priorities upon arriving and the specifics change depending on where we are, but one thing that never changes is the need to fix all the stuff we broke while out at sea. Before we fix things though, we celebrate. It's important because passage is often not easy and its the celebration that we always look forward to when things are tough out at sea. We reflect on our journey and bask in the accomplishment of having made it before moving on to 'regular life'. Clearing in and dealing with immigration is often done in conjunction with celebration. In this case it actually took three days to get cleared in because we arrived on a holiday. Even though we couldn't leave the boat initially, we were allowed to hang out in the beautiful marina property for most of that time so it worked out just fine. Once that was done we set off to explore because that is the next best part of arrival after celebrating - Feasting our eyes on new sights, encountering new sounds and smells, and riding the wave of excitement that comes with the novelty of being in a foreign country for the first time ever AND having arrived by sailboat. Isla Mujeres is full of energy and we thoroughly enjoy our first jaunt into town AND our first tacos - YUM! Finally we take a dip in the incredible clear turquoise water and explore the bright coral in a spot close to our dock. And all of a sudden that was it. A real life nightmare. I’m usually pretty calm in a crisis, but before we went to bed I was actually anxious this time. It was like my body was preparing me for what was coming, but still, you never really believe something will happen- it’s just the unknown that freaks the body out and you sort of settle with that feeling, hoping and feeling pretty certain that you’ll wake up to another day where it was all just a bad storm. I always think to myself – what is the worst that can happen – at it usually calms me down, but even knowing I’m not worried for our lives, the wake up call at 2:30 am, saying: Get up – we gotta reset! Is not what you wanna hear. And I actually didn’t. Laying there asleep next to our baby, what Cody said didn’t even sink in until a couple of minutes later, where my mind went: Wait, should I get up now? What’s going on? Why would he wake me up? Reset? Did he say reset anchor? Wait – that means running the windless. Millie will wake up. What do I do? Have you ever had to learn something new because of a problem you came across? I did. I learned that 55% of Boat Fires are caused by problems with shore power cords and shore power connection. The design of the NEMA Shore Power adapter has been in used since 1938 pretty much unchanged. This design has caused over $100M in damages to boats all over the USA as reported by BoatUS.com, as a result of boat fires. As we were getting ready to go for a leisurely sail, we ran into a problem with our shore power cord not wanting to disconnect from the boat inlet. After much trouble we were able to remove the cord to discover that we had a melt down on the cords. Whether this was caused by the recent lightning storms create a power surge or the contact on the cord becoming loose and overheating, a boat fire is not a problem I want to have on Reverie. Most people owns boats in the 27 to 42 ft range which means most of us use shore power to run our Air Conditioners, Charge our Batteries, run Water Heaters, etc. So we are always at risk when we are connected to shore power using the common shore power cable. On this episode we will show you our new shore power solution. We will do an unboxing of the product and walk through of the installation. Of course not every goes as smooth as we wish. Have you ever wonder how they wired boats in the 1980s? Well we are about to show you what we found when trying to run new marine wire, panel, led lights and systems on Reverie our Pearson 34 sailboat. Back in those days companies use standard copper wire shielded in plastic and then they feed that wire through a cloth shield to provide a shield from chaffing for the wire. The problem is that they strapped this conduit (if you can call it that) to the polybutylene water pipes and placed it in places out of reach. So every time you try to pull or feed a new wire the soggy conduit will bunched up and prevent from either removing or feeding new wire for Reverie. So we made the decision that for our sailboat restoration we would pull the old electrical wire out and re-do it from scratch by installing new marine wire to ensure we have good electric on all critical systems. So on this episode we will show you how we ran new electric marine wire; how we removed old wire; how we installed a brand new Paneltronics AC/DC Panel with 19 Breakers, Scanstrut Cable Seals and other fun stuff. One lesson we hope you get from this is that nothing goes as smooth or as fast as you would like; but in the end, it is very rewarding to see that you have accomplished something special. It took several days over several weeks, and hurricane to get this project done. Our Ginger Shantytown is a Catamanan Cocktails origianl, but the the inspo totally came from the Death and Co.'s Shantytown recipe. The Ginger Shantytown is a VERY loose twist on a Boilermaker style cocktail. What's a boilermaker, you ask? The Boilermaker is traced back to blue collar workers over 200 years ago. They'd drink one after a long shift. By definition, it's is a shot (of whisky) in one glass and a beer in another. You can either down the shot of whiskey then drink the beer, OR, you can dunk your shot of whiskey right into your beer, and chug. In recent years, bars have been getting super creative and experimenting with their pairings. Lauren's vote is a shot of mezcal with a light pilsner. Or how about Campari with a raspberry sour ale? (Yes, please to both!). For us, we went with a freshly filled growler of Ginger Cider from the West Indies Brewery Company- AWESOME place to hang out, btw! And paired it with Blue Light Caribbean Gin and mashed up apples. Super fun and easy to make, and really refreshing on a hot day.
