Ever wonder where everyday expressions like “three sheets to the wind,” “overboard,” “the bitter end,” or even “windfall” actually came from? Turns out, tons of common words in English were invented by sailors, pirates, and old-school sea captains, and today we still use them without even thinking about it. In this episode of the Sailing Doodles Podcast, I break down over 80 everyday words and sayings that all started on ships — from naval terms, pirate slang, emergency commands, rigging language, and old maritime traditions. Some of these are obvious… but most of them will absolutely blow your mind! If you enjoy sailing, history, language, or just fun trivia, this is a super entertaining deep dive into how much of modern English came from life at sea. Fair winds and following seas — and thanks for listening! If you want to be part of the process, join here: https://www.patreon.com/sailingdoodles

How do you pilot a yacht with ease? 🚤The Absolute 56 Fly makes it simple with all the latest tech for smooth sailing. Keeping guests comfortable is key – and that starts with trim control. Using the automatic interceptors at the stern, the yacht adjusts to the waves in real time. 🌊⚡ Manual control? Easy. If waves come from the bow, lower the interceptors to reduce pitching. If waves hit from behind, raise them to prevent the bow from diving between swells. Side-to-side roll? With independent adjustment of each interceptor, it can almost disappear – giving a smoother ride and more enjoyable time onboard. What’s your secret for keeping guests comfortable at sea? Well that was all over before it begun... www.sailingnandji.com Six weeks ago, we rolled out of South Africa with one goal: to explore Southern Africa in our trusty Defender, Landji. But as it turns out… Landji had a completely different adventure in mind. Somewhere in the heart of the Namibian desert, casually bouncing along a lonely dirt road, everything changed. In an instant where Landji suffered catastrophic engine failure. A trip ending kind of problem By midnight, Landji was being winched onto the back of a tow truck, and we bounced along in the darkness back to a town while we tried to figure out what on earth just happened. Subsequently the weekend was spent sleeping in a shed, then two long weeks waiting in the desert, waiting for a new rebuilt engine to bring Landji back to life. And now—here we are. Stuck in the middle of nowhere. slightly delirious… and absolutely losing our minds. The fifth video covers the first part of the 4th leg of our long journey. Was our advanced wx forecast accurate? What wx did we really have and was it expected? We are using PredictWind.com new Departure Tool to help us sail in good conditions during our sailing passages from Philippines to Tahiti, with Bob McDavitt as extra ace before long & crucial passages. On our way from Noro in the Solomons, we traveled across all of the Solomons to check out of Lata. From there we sailed direct to Santo to clear in as Sola was not open for check-ins. We had to be very patient in Santo to get ok conditions to sail to Port Vila. Filmed in May to November 2025. Next video will cover leg 5 from Vanuatu to Tonga.

Uniting captains, industry leaders and special guests, the Captains of Industry Roundtable delivered a rare forum for high-level insight, refined discussion and meaningful collaboration on the issues defining the future of luxury yachting. The much-anticipated 2025 Captains of Industry Roundtable was held on 11 November at the Australian National Maritime Museum, gathering 71 guests – superyacht captains, yacht owners, industry leaders and sponsors – for a full day of candid discussion and connection. Hillary Buckman, Event Founder and Managing Director of Ocean Media, said the Roundtable was designed as a conversation, not a conference – a space for real voices and real issues. “The Captains of Industry Roundtable was created as a space for genuine conversation – a chance for the people shaping our industry to come together, share ideas and talk openly about the challenges and opportunities ahead,” Buckman said. “It’s all about connection – connecting people, ideas and experience,” she added. “The strength of our industry lies in relationships and in being willing to listen, learn and collaborate so that it evolves and strengthens and everybody, at every level, benefits.” Special thanks to event partners: Signature Partner: Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard (GCCM) Elite Partners: Benetti Yachts, Pantaenius Australia and Miele Australia Ocean Partners: Aurora Yacht Logistics, Analu Interiors, Boating Industry Association (BIA), Maritime Cook Islands, Sevenstar Yacht Transport, Tax Navigate Australia and Volvo Penta.

Sailing vessel Tapatya This is the story of SV Tapatya, a self-built, Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. The videos are a week-by-week record of our adventures as I live aboard, sail and strive to find out just what such a self-built, low-budget vessel is capable of. These videos take a lot of time and effort to make, in what is already a time-intensive project. Your support in watching, subscribing and sharing these videos is very much appreciated.
