Life in Port Protection, Alaska | Living Aboard Our Sailboat in the Dead of Winter

This week we’re working and living in Port Protection, Alaska, spending time in one of Southeast Alaska’s smallest and most isolated communities while living aboard our sailboat. Port Protection is best known to many from television, but what we experienced was something quieter and more personal - a winter walk through the village boardwalks, skiff travel through the back bay, time spent with locals, and hands-on work helping a year round resident build his home using local cedar milled right on site. In this video you’ll see: • A walking tour through Port Protection’s winter boardwalks • How people live, move, and get water in a remote coastal village • Skiff travel through tidal channels and the back bay • Trail access between coves at high tide • Helping a local friend with home construction and framing • The rhythms of daily life in a tiny Alaskan community in mid-winter Living aboard our sailboat allows us to move slowly, stay longer, and experience places like this beyond a quick visit. This isn’t a guidebook or a TV version of Alaska - it’s simply what life looked like for us during a week in Port Protection. Special thanks Veronica for being a part of this video and Jayson for his support of the Alaskan Gypsy Life! Thanks for joining us. We’d love to hear your thoughts or experiences in the comments. — Scott & Audrey Alaskan Gypsy Life ___________ Chapters • Winter Arrival in Port Protection • Walking the Boardwalks of Port Protection • How Water & Utilities Work in a Remote Village • Life, Loss, and History in a Small Community • Skiff Access & Tidal Travel • Crossing the Bay by Trail at High Tide • Milling Local Cedar for Home Building • Helping a Neighbor Build His House • Exploring the Back Bay by Skiff • Wildlife, Weather & Winter Conditions • Reflections on Life in Port Protection • Heading On & What Comes Next ________ Port Protection Alaska Living aboard a sailboat Alaskan sailboat life Alaska winter life Remote Alaska village Life in Alaska winter Southeast Alaska Off grid Alaska Skiff life Alaska Alaska boardwalk village Living on a boat Alaska Alaskan coastal living Self reliant living Alaska Alaska cruising lifestyle
