LAHAKAI SAILING // ⛵️ S1 Ep5 // PART 1 // Our sailboat restoration project takes on the challenge of a boat refit from the ground up. After discovering the extent of the damage to our sailboat hull, we decide to do a complete boat conversion to home and transform it into a fully electric boat that we can use to sail around the world. In this video, we start the refit process by renovating the upper deck and superstructure, and building davits for dinghy. But the challenges don't stop there - we also tackle the construction of a new cockpit and test our refitted sailboat hull in the water. ➡️ PART 1 // Episode 4 :: Current Video ➡️ PART 2 // Episode 5 :: https://youtu.be/4rFx30F1EjQ ➡️ PART 3 // Episode 8 :: https://youtu.be/2MAKoo-mA50 Upper Deck/Superstructure: 2:08 Water Test: 4:40 Davits: 6:09 Cockpit: 7:07 Bowsprit: Episode 5 Chain Locker: Episode 5 Hard Dodger: Episode 5 Electric Motor: Episode 7 Changing tiller to helm: Episode 8 ============================= There is so much more to come so remember to subscribe to @lahakai ➡️ WEEKLY VIDEOS EVERY SUNDAY AT 11AM (BRT) WHO ARE WE? Refitting Vintage 1965 O’Day Ospray. SV KuzKuz goes on her maiden voyage. It’s the first time she’s off the trailer in 10 years. Come along for this quick episode. Over the winter we will be painting the deck and bottom, plus adding some seat cushions. What are your thoughts on adding a bilge pump and solar panels on a day sailing boat? The question would be, “what if she turtles?” I think I’d have to add a water tight battery box, but then there’s the concern for condensation. Let me know your thoughts… thank you for watching.

Sailing Adventures with Grandad Wish me Luck Sailing Sicily In this episode I share my solo journey down the East Coast of Sicily. Leaving Lipari after a week with my daughter Alex and her friends I head to the Straight of Messina to go sail past Taormina and Mt Etna, have a beautiful visit to historic Siracusa and come around the SE tip of Sicily into gale force winds and a close call entering the Marina di Ragusa. An important voayage for the decisions I needed to take regarding the future of this channel, my journeying and where next. The why and the where next? I started this Channel , SAILING ADVENTURES WITH GRANDAD ,to share my vagabonding on Vayu my 44 ft sloop with you my viewers and the trips themselves with family, friends, and often solo as well. The people I meet and travel with, the places we go, the times we have and life. After leaving Palma de Mallorca 5 months ago I am now leaving the Aeolian Islands on my way South through the straights of Messina down the east coast of Sicily and on to Ragusa on the South Coast of Sicily. In this chapter I decide that the why is because I am called to do it. As silly as that sounds to me, I feel its a calling and could not be happier to finally be doing something that will not allow me to stop. And my dear partner Isabel…thank you for so celebrating me with all my passions. Im Michael, 73 year old and the grandad , a lifetime sailor, practicing yogi, father of 4, grandad of 5, amateur chef, and contented bachelor with a special other. I live in Palma de Mallorca, Spain or on Vayu wherever we may be. My beautiful and seaworthy sailboat Vayu, a 44 ft X-Yacht (the X-442), was born in Denmark in 2002. She requires care and attention but is absolutely reliable. This journey is a celebration of life and dedicated to taking one day at a time, living gratefully as long as one can. I appreciate my good fortune and create these videos to share this really facinating life journey with friends, family and all who care to join me. This channel was launched at the beginning of the Ukrainian invasion and I make monthly contributions to Save the Children-Ukraine, in the hope that millions of us contributing can help ease the suffering of the many displaced Ukrainian families.

WELCOME!!! We are so glad you are here!!! Sailing in and out of Destin Harbor was a bit of a scary ride in our low riding Hobie Kayak sailboat. We’re seated only about six inches from the surface of the water! Horns blaring, big boats backing up and pulling out, and narrow passages. It was a busy area but beautiful and so fun! (Some of the chat is low so I’ve included subtitles for you to turn on your CC -Closed Captioning if you wish.) :) There are many different things you can do here in the Destin, Florida Harbor and Harborwalk Village; even if you don’t have your own ride. Numerous places to rent waverunners and SUP boards, fishing tours, scuba and snorkel tours, dolphin tours, Crab Island tours, pontoon boats with slides, and just awesomeness of all kinds. There’s even a zipline and a pirate boat! Sit back and enjoy! Subscribe, Like, and hit that Bell to be the first to know each time we publish a new video. This isn't an exciting video, but it's special to me. I never take it for granted that things like this are a daily part of my life. While having to dinghy to and from shore makes simple tasks, not so simple, it also provides me with some very magical moments. From the beauty of the sun setting over water, to dolphins swimming along nearby, and to getting to see a variety of styles of boats up close. Every day is like going to a boat show. It's all pretty special, and something I know I will remember when this journey ends.

We have had the Havaseas, our Nordhavn 55, for just over a year and a half. We explored Canada over the winter and spring. We are now back to Alaska. We continue our journey at Berg Bay. These are our adventures, how we live and where we go. Hamburger Buns: This recipe just makes 4 large rolls which is perfect for 2 meals for us. 1 1/2 c flour ( additional 1/2 cup may be necessary, work as you go) 1t salt or less 1T sugar mix to combine 1T or 1 packet yeast, add to 1/2 c warm water, let sit 5 min Add 2T oil 1 egg mix well Add wet mix to flour mix, starting with 1 1/2 cups, and adding more if you need it to form dough. Mix in kitchenaid till dough comes together and is not too sticky, about 4 min. By hand, mix wet and dry till combined and forms a sticky dough. Turn out onto a floured surface and kneed about 8 min till smooth dough forms. Add as little flour as possible to keep it from sticking. Once dough is made, form onto 4 round hamburger buns, press slightly flat, and allow to rest for 15 min. Do not leave longer to rise. Bake in 425 oven for 12 min, brown tops with broiler if necessary. This is in a force 10 oven Cool on a wire rack. https://www.browneyedbaker.com/cream-cheese-cherry-pie-crumb-bars/ BenSound Music: A New Beginning by Benjamin Tissot. We are Ben and MP! Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the work needed was much more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way. Kate was a junior sailor in Opti's and 420's while Curtis went cruising in the Great Lakes with his family. We met while sailing in a Melges 24 regatta and have been sailing together ever since. The first time we went cruising together as a couple was on a friends borrowed J Boats J 105 in the North Channel of Lake Huron and Canada (part of the Great Loop). Those few weeks, and watching other channels like Gone With the Wynns, Sailing Uma, Project Atticus, Delos, Nahoa, and Sailing La Vagabonde, convinced us that the sailing life was for us. We bought our boat, a J Boats J/46, in 2019 after spending years searching for the perfect bluewater sailboat to sail around the world. We were interested in a catamaran and monohulls, but loved the performance cruising design of the J(it is faster than most cruising catamarans). We spent six months refitting her in Rhode Island, before selling our house and cars, quitting our jobs, and leaving land life for good to become digital nomads, with the goal of sailing around the world via Cape Horn. We have since navigated over 12,000 miles together, through storms, big waves, pandemics, and lockdowns. We sailed to Maine, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Grenada, Sint Maarten, the Azores, Canary Islands, and Brazil, on our way south to Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile to sail around Cape Horn and into the Patagonia fjords. We never intended to become influencers or start a new YouTube sailing channel, but now it is what we do. We love sharing our experience and adventures with you. We have learned to fly the drone and edit videos, trying to produce relaxing and listenable videos for you to sail away and watch at home while having coffee on Sunday mornings.

After clearing in to Costa Rica, we waste no time in setting sail to Matapalo, an epic little surf spot in the southern end of the country. Here we meet Ben, a 14 year old boy who had been surfing with us, who we invited onto the boat to spend the afternoon with us... who ended up having a fairly profound impact on the entire crew.... SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. During his time away from work, Jamie lived on board and cruised South East Asia. One of his life dreams is to sail around the world. His plans came together at the end of 2018 when he met a Filipina lounge singer in China. Princess was yearning for a vacation since she had been working many years to support her family. Finally, her siblings got their own jobs and she decided to join Jamie on Jupiter² and go sailing. It was a wild decision for her because she had never sailed before. For the first time, they sail for two weeks around Phuket, Thailand. She began to see what Jamie love about the sea. They both resigned from their jobs in early 2019 and began cruising full time. #173 ✍️Quel soulagement ! Quel bonheur !

We had to haul out our yacht to complete our emergency repairs! We knew when we left French Guiana after the Jetski accident and our emergency repairs that we would have to haul Saoirse out and fix the bow of the yacht. We had hoped that because it was above waterline we would possibly be able to do the repairs in the water. Once we had gotten to Trinidad it was evident that fixing her in the water was going to be impossible with all the wakes that come through the bay from power boats constantly wizzing through. After looking into the haul out at Peakes Yacht Services we decided it was a deal we couldn’t resist. Their prices were amazing and they give you your first 6 days on the hard for free. Us, being ever optimistic, we thought “wow it will be easy to get the work done in those free days!” BUT we were mistaken. As everyone that owns a yacht knows, when you fix one thing, 3 more things break! We had decided that while we had Saoirse on the hard we would realign the starboard rudder because we had noticed it was slightly off centre and had a shudder when we started to approach Trinidad. We also wanted to paint the cockpit floor as the paint had started peeling very badly over our crossing. We had also noticed when they were pressure cleaning the underside of the hulls that a bit of our anti fouling had started to come off. Not terribly but we thought since we were out we might as well touch that up and raise the waterline slightly. After we started sanding the anti fouling down we decided let’s do it properly and apply another 3 coats of anti fouling. While Saoirse was being pressure cleaned some paint above the water line peeled off and we had to add that to the list of jobs too. All in all we spent 10 days on the hard and when we say it was HARD being on the hard we are not exaggerating. The heat was unbearable with most days reaching between 37 and 39 degrees outside and the inside of the boat reaching 45 degrees!!! Tensions were high most of the time but we got the work we needed done and we’re put back into the water where it is so much cooler! 🤩

In this episode we carry on toward the northwest corner of Spain, stopping at the town of Muxia, which has just started a five day party. Kevin tries his hand at winning a teddy bear for Jeannine at a carnival game. And we hike to the point where the 'church of the lady of the boats' sits prominently to honour lost sailors. And we talk about the Orca problem in the area....and one reason we like seeing dolphins swimming with us! Thanks for following! We set up and demonstrate the Takacat 260S inflatable dinghy and Epropulsion Spirit Plus 1kw Electric Outboard. Our top speed at full 1,000 watt output with one 180lb person in the dinghy was about 5 knots. That leaves only 1 hour 15 minutes run time but remarkably the motor will push the dinghy all day at about 2.5 knots using less than 100 watts. Somewhere in between those speeds you'll find the best combination of speed and range. Recharging the 48v battery with the standard supplied AC charger can take up to 7 hours and there is an optional fast charger available. Don't be surprised that the charger gets very hot to the touch which is normal. The owner plans to charge the battery when at anchor by plugging it into his 1500 watt DC to AC inverter powered off the boat's battery bank. There is also an optional 12v charger available and you can charge it from solar as well. Although not needed on a dinghy, there is a Spirit 1.0 EVO model available for small sailboats that has a regeneration feature to allow the outboard to recharge the battery under sail. The Takacat 260S dinghy is the smallest version available at 8'6" overall and 57lbs. The open transom and inflatable raised floor allow it to be lighter and stow more compact than standard inflatables. They also sell a popular 260LX model that has an open bow which makes it 3 lbs lighter but it will be a wetter ride in anything other than flat water. The Takacat 260S capacity is listed as 3 people / 793 lbs. But in calm waters I'm sure it can handle 4 people of average weight at the slow speeds an electric outboard will deliver. https://onlineoutboards.com/products/takacat-260-s-inflatable-catamaran https://www.epropulsion.com/spirit-1/ Purchased from Annapolis Hybrid Marine ePropulsion dealer https://www.annapolishybridmarine.com/ We can be reached at atomvoyages.com or if you have a classic sailboat and want to share your experiences or have questions on fitting out, consider joining the Plastic Classic Forum at https://plasticclassicforum.com/forum/ I'm a moderator on the forum and answer questions there. From the underside of the globe as we see it in our atlases, Inversion, is a 43 minute video of a 4 week expedition to Antarctica led by Everest mountaineer Stephen Venables on board Skip Novak's Pelagic Australis. Peaks climbed included 10,000 feet Mt Francais, Mount Scott and other ski randonnee forays in the awesome beauty of a snowbound Antarctic Peninsula. Extensive drone footage shows the challenges of navigating the ice pack and the beauty of the anchorages. The final part of the video covers the Chilean Navy's celebrations of 400th anniversary of the naming of Cape Horn.

In July of 2022, the JMYS team was in remote Cape Charles, Virginia working aboard Miller Time, a Kadey Krogen 58 that has since listed and sold with JMYS. We spent a few days aboard at the dock, taking measurements, filming the Talk Through Tour, and only leaving the boat for lunch runs or the occasional stroll to stretch out our legs. On one of these outings, Jeff noticed a familiar sailboat docked just a few boats down from us in the small marina. He came back to the boat to deliver the exciting news to our team and owner of Miller Time, Scott Miller. While Jeff recognized Britican from YouTube, Scott and his wife Teri also knew of Kim and Simon from Britican, having met them on a cruise to Charleston a few years prior. As you can imagine, a July day in Virginia meant extreme temps and blazing sun beating down on everything and everyone. Jeff announced to the team that he was going to invite Britican for an interview and he was sure they would come because the amenities aboard Miller Time included air conditioning and an icemaker – both things that Britican was needing on this particular sunny day. A few minutes later, Kim and Simon were in the saloon of Miller Time getting to know Jeff and their conversation is now our latest Cruising Conversations! Kim, Simon and their daughter Sienna are the faces behind the YouTube channel, Sailing Britican. They have lived on their 56’ Oyster sailboat, Britican, since 2014 and offer sailing lifestyle experience charters for those looking to get into the lifestyle.
