It's chock full of sea life - Fish jumping everywhere, tons of birds, and the most magical visit from a pod of dolphins who are taking advantage of the abundance of fish surrounding Calico Skies. In the last episode we set sail from Brighton and begin our passage along the south coast of the UK to Darmouth. In this episode we decide to head from Darmouth to Salcombe, but when we turn our engine on, we realise it wont start! Instead it makes a horrible noise, and once again we have to fix our engine before we can set sail! With a phone call to our amazing friend Guy, we identified that our starter motor/ solenoid was the issue and so the engine wouldn’t turn over. Living aboard our sailboat, we have come to know our boat through and through and as some of you may have seen we have rebuilt our engine twice. ​ @Sailing Kawai This week we leave Gocek, a special place in Turkey for us as it's where we purchased Kawai and met some wonderful friends. It's sad to leave but with great winds forecast we would sail to Marmaris then onto Datca where we would explore. The Meltemi blows from the North throughout summer so we look for a window where we can get some good sailing in. The previous day had little wind so we expect small swell and strong winds which makes for great sailing. The winds over both days range from 8 to 28 knots which is perfect and we have fun testing our sailing skills. We anchor off a little town called Aktur, which is 11nm East of Datca. This is a fantastic base for provisioning and has a protected anchorage for when the winds blow from the North. The town has markets that run on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday that are worth a visit. Update We haven't posted for a while as we have had some bad luck. Trace and I both caught Covid and this affected Traces voice which meant no voice-overs. Aloha, welcome back! In this video, we set sail from Antigua and make our way North to its sister island Barbuda. We're so surprised when we get there to find it's basically just one big beach! But we have it all to ourselves and swim ashore for an explore. We then have a squally sail down towards Cocoa bay, which is less remote but still beautiful. We check out the local bar there, Shack-a-kai and become regulars whilst we're there. We go back for the freshest lobster we've ever had and then sail on towards Spanish Point - another idyllic and completely secluded bay just off the Atlantic coast. We are Kathrin and Daniel sailing, cruising and living aboard our sailing yacht SV Polaris Helvetica, a 14m Bavaria Cruiser 46 from 2017. We left our native Switzerland and moved to the UK almost two decades ago. In 2021, in our mid 50-ies and after our three boys left the nest we made the big decision to leave the rat race in London and to make our beloved sailboat our primary floating residence. Over the years we added a generator, got rid of the propane gas cooker and replaced it with an electric stove and oven, changed our house battery bank to Lithium (LiFePo, Lithium Iron Phospate), added a 1,200W solar arch and a water maker. With these upgrades Polaris is now a comfortable home allowing us to cruise the coast of the United Kingdom and, most recently, Scoland, in comfort, summer and winter. Kathrin loves to cook and bake on board, you will see some of her cookery wonders across our episodes, and makes good use of her Thermomix cooker. We totally fell in love with our new lifestyle although we had to make some tough decisions. We vacated our rental house in London and sold and gave away all our furniture and belongings that had no space on Polaris. It is a very liberating feeling to be able to say that all we own is with us on our small sailing boat. There's nothing else to care about. We enjoy our freedom and exploring new places, discovering their history and we love making new friends along our way.

Al final el viento simpatizó con nosotros y nos dejó avanzar más rápido de lo que predecimos en el Cabo de San Vicente. Llegamos a Sines sobre las 6 de la tarde entretenidos con una familia de delfines que nos siguió durante horas. Fue un regalo atracar en el puerto y poder disfrutar de un paseo por este pueblo tan auténtico, que por supuesto estaba en fiestas. Desde Gibraltar, hemos coincidido con las fiestas de todos los lugares que hemos visitado pero sólo en Sancti Petri la llegamos a disfrutar como toca ya que subir Portugal conlleva una navegación más intensa y queremos descansar en cada ocasión que se nos presente. Descubrimos que no solo la música entretiene a bordo, también los podcasts y nada es más inspirador que escuchar las aventuras de los primeros navegantes que sin ninguna otra ayuda que un sextante, un compás, pluma y papel se aventuraban en busca de nuevos horizontes sin saber que iban a entontrar. Después de una noche de descanso, nos decidimos a seguir subiendo Portugal y conseguimos avanzar muchísimo más de lo planeado. Siguiente parada: Nazaré! We have had a lot of projects with this jeep, today we are going over our top 7 upgrades for trailing. This options may differ for you and your trailing needs. We are not rock crawls, we are in sandy destinations were the trail ends and the party begins. First upgrade we did to our jeep and a must if you trail at night are lights. Nothing like hitting the trail and the only reason your jeep ain't coming home is because you couldn't see. You thought the trail was okay! Now your in a mess you can't get out of. Don't be that person, get some good trail lights. We went with barricade bumpers for their solid construction and beefy look. Not only have they protected our jeep from trail damage, but they saved our jeep when a snowbird crossed 3 lanes of traffic knocking our jeep in the turn lane. If you trail, you are going to need a winch. It may be to help out others along the trail, or made you make an error and get stuck. Our son, while never getting stuck himself, has used this winch countless times help others out. Knock on wood he never gets stuck, but like a spare tire a winch is not needed, until it is. When we got the jeep it had 3 inch blocks on it which does no look as good, plus it stretches' thing and shortens your shifters. We changed this to a 4 inch suspension lift with on inch body lift. Lowering the body raised the shifters up and made the visible gaps between the frame much less noticeable. Also with the larger total lift we have we can easily fit 33' inch tires. With larger tires you can really hurt torque making your jeep perform poorly. With this gear change it moved us back to what stock tires would perform like when we up our tires to 33' inch tires. Right now we have 32' inch tires but our jeeps shoes are getting a bit worn and the change is Imminent. We choose to go with Boom Mat for ease of use to reduce the tin noise we were getting with the large subwoofer. We also wanted to help prevent road noise and cut down heat, since the carpet was almost ripped apart. For the noise and heat this solution worked great until we added AC. The window would supply enough air that you would not feel the road heat, but now with the AC it just can move enough air. There was more work than throwing a sub box in and calling it a day. We actually spent time planning where the ports vented, the sub pointed, and the box volume to get max bass out of this Skar Sub in little space. We even sealed up everything so that when the tailgate is close, it doesn't look like this jeep has a system.
