Postojna Cave system is a series of caverns, halls and passages over 24km long and two million years old, was hollowed out by the Pivka River, which enters a subterranean tunnel near the cave’s entrance. Predjama Castle is perched halfway up a 123-metre cliff, where it has stood for more than 800 years. It is in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest cave castle in the world. The castle is also connected to the legend of the "robber baron" Erasmus of Predjama. The Cave below Predjama Castle is the second-longest show cave in Slovenia. Predjama Castle is first attested in 1274, the year it was built, in the Gothic style, by the Patriarch of Aquileia. It was later rebuilt by its new owners, the Luegg family, whose most notorious member was Erasmus of Predjama. Predjama Castle is the only completely preserved cave castle in Europe. Its unique situation halfway up a cliff offers a unique insight into the construction techniques and inventiveness of its medieval builders, who sought a safe refuge right by the entrance to the cave. The castle has featured in numerous documentaries and feature films. Two of the most prominent are an episode of the reality series Ghost Hunters International and the film Armour of God starring action hero Jackie Chan. Inside the castle, visitors can see numerous replica weapons – lances, halberds, swords, battle hammers, longbows, crossbows and armour – in a faithfully reconstructed room in the main castle attic.

We are Kathrin and Daniel sailing, cruising and living aboard our sailing yacht SV Polaris Helvetica, a 14m Bavaria Cruiser 46 from 2017. We left our native Switzerland and moved to the UK almost two decades ago. In 2021, in our mid 50-ies and after our three boys left the nest we made the big decision to leave the rat race in London and to make our beloved sailboat our primary floating residence. Over the years we added a generator, got rid of the propane gas cooker and replaced it with an electric stove and oven, changed our house battery bank to Lithium (LiFePo, Lithium Iron Phospate), added a 1,200W solar arch and a water maker. With these upgrades Polaris is now a comfortable home allowing us to cruise the coast of the United Kingdom and, most recently, Scoland, in comfort, summer and winter. Kathrin loves to cook and bake on board, you will see some of her cookery wonders across our episodes, and makes good use of her Thermomix cooker. We totally fell in love with our new lifestyle although we had to make some tough decisions. We vacated our rental house in London and sold and gave away all our furniture and belongings that had no space on Polaris. It is a very liberating feeling to be able to say that all we own is with us on our small sailing boat. There's nothing else to care about. We enjoy our freedom and exploring new places, discovering their history and we love making new friends along our way.

Replacing the Serpentine Belt with a tensioner is a pretty easy job. On a Volvo it can be a little tight and there are a few things that got to be removed first. So lets go over what has to happen to make changing the belt on your Volvo easier. First you need to get the radiator and power steering reservoir out of the way. To do this you only need to slide the line going from the power steering pump out of it's restraint on the top of the pump. Then remove the line on the radiator reservoir that is closest to the fender. Be sure to plug this line once remove to reduce the amount of coolant lost. You can now simple lift the radiator and power steering reservoir out and lay them on top of the engine. See picture and video for further details. Next you their is a plastic cover the is located forward of the radiator and power steering reservoir that clips in place. This can be unclipped and removed to further improve your the room you need to install the belt. Now we have to get the belt on, and if the belt is gone, use the diagram below. When I installed the belt it was easiest to start at the crank pully. I thin looped the belt over the alternator. Once here it was a little challenging to get the belt looped under the AC pully, but once done you are on the home stretch. Lastly I simply looped the belt over the power steering pump and it was ready to be tensioned. Now the tensioner can be a little bit of a pain. You have to make sure the the belt is between the 14 mm wrench and the tensioner or it will never go on. Then with the wrench you want to turn clockwise to loosen the tensioner and allowing the belt to slide on. Once on it is just working in reverse to get everything installed back in place. And one note when installing everything back in place. In our case we had to get the mattress made in 3 custom pieces to allow for both access to storage areas beneath the bed and also to fit within a space that is very un-rectangle-like. Between fishing vessels in the harbor of Praia we start preparing ourselves for soon crossing the cold North Atlantic – immersion suit inspection & demonstration! But before leaving for Graciosa, we are stunned by the landscape of one of the most famous hikes in the Azores archipelago: from the Serra do Topo passing the Faja de Caldeira de Santo Cristo to end up at the Faja dos Cubres on São Jorge! 10 kilometers full of perfect idyll between blooming hydrangeas, green pastures, grazing cows, waterfalls and awesome views. Absorb the magic of São Jorge’s fajãs and learn more about their important history as 70% of São Jorge’s surface is found at an altitude above 300m – on Graciosa only being 5%! When arriving on Graciosa, we figure it differs from the other islands in the archipelago in many ways. The large caldera occupying the southern part of the island surprises us as for the first time in our lives we descend into the underworld through a volcanic vent to reach its mysterious, still active inside!

SV KuzKuz is a vintage O’Day Ospray a 16’ daysailer from 1965. She spends a week on the water and has a successful shakedown cruise. Everything works. She was previously out of the water for 10 years before I bought her. Showing her some love while I refit her over the winter. For now I’m pleased with the progress. Episode 5: Join us this week as we explore Kotor Montenegro. No wind sadly means no sailing but lots of other fun to be had. We visit the Castle of Kotor and hike over 2,000 feet (over 600 meters) in elevation above the castle to see some amazing views. We get off the beaten path where we find a foot bridge and switchback our way up the mountain. We hiked from our marina over 11 miles round trip to the top of the trail of Old Fort of Kotor above the San Giovanni Castle of Kotor Montenegro. We checked off a few more boat projects. Shelly works on whipping the ends of the dock lines to keep them in order while Cass peels old stickers off the boat to prepare for our own Port of Call to be put into place.
