It is a solo race of around 3,500 nautical miles which connects Saint-Malo to Guadeloupe – the port of arrival is Pointe-à-Pitre. The first edition took place in 1978; it was won by Mike Birch – the Canadian sailor has just pass away. This 1978 edition recorded the superiority of multihulls over monos; since then, every four years, we have to deal with separate classes. There are two for monohulls: IMOCA and Classe40. There are two for multihulls: Ultim and Ocean Fifty. A fifth category brings together legendary sailboats and/or skippers... This is the Rhum Class (Rhum Multi and Rhum Mono). The record for the event is held by Francis Joyon during the 2018 edition in 7 d 14 h 21 min 47 s. Francis Le Goff is Race Director. He is responsible for the 138 participants in this 2022 edition – a record! We were able to meet him. Thanks to the invitation of Suzuki, which equips fifty Highffield semi-rigid boats responsible for securing the body of water, we were able to welcome the Ultims and the Ocean Fifty before their passage through the lock to reach the basins. Day 3- Nassau, Bahamas: Port is currently under construction. Junkanoo Beach is a great option. About a mile walk from port. Market outside of port has tons of good little shops. Day 4- Sea Day: We took full advantage of ZipLine, RockWall, and the Abyss. The crew members make it such a fun experience. Neil grew up sailing in the UK and quickly became accustomed to the range of weather conditions that it serves up. By the time he was a few months old, he completed his first English Channel crossing. He fell into maritime training as a teenager at his local sailing club, before emigrating to Australia and launching his own Sydney based training company 'Above and Beyond Boating'. Unlike some of the monotonous "death by powerpoint" courses that are run, Neil decided to pioneer a different approach to training through real life scenario, video based training, that people could complete remotely. When COVID came along, this went from a great idea to the "only show in town" as the traditional classroom trainers, shelved most of their courses for 2 years. Neil shares some great lessons from his decades clocking up tens of thousands of miles at sea and provides some great insights into the simple safety things we take forgranted. Sailing the Bay of Green Bay off the west shore of beautiful Door County, Wisconsin with family and friends. We sailed Northwest toward Sturgeon Bay and then returned to Wave Pointe Marina after rounding the Sturgeon Bay Entrance Bouy. This is Episode 57 of our adventure. Our eighth week sailing the west coast of France. We try to take advantage of every weather window to get as far north as we can making our way back to England. We have highs with dolphin encounters, calm passages, fair waters, and lows with a burst hydraulic pipe, almost going the wrong way through choppy seas & trying to check out of France. We are a family of five with plans for an epic adventure, sailing around the world. We have bought a boat we have to gut it, rebuild it, sell all of our possessions and have the guts to cast off.
