Just a quick update on the progress aboard my Westsail 32 Mighty Sparrow. Not many days now and hoping for a good weather window soon. Follow the next trip on Twitter: @dieSailing
This week I have decided to take the plunge and not to sail and this will allow me to get the teak oiled properly as it needs 24 hours to dry. I have to take this opportunity whilst the boat is on the trailer and the sun is shining but in any event, it gives me the chance to get the boat looking great. I spend the whole morning cutting, polishing, sanding, acetoning and oiling and it was super great fun. Right up my street!!! 00:00 Roads, weather and forecast 02:01 Debate over boat name! 02:57 Stripping the boat 03:26 Polishing the hull 12:52 Sanding the wood

SAILBOAT REFIT - How to tune a carbon MAST with a HYDRAULIC JACK In this video we tune our carbon fibre mast and rig. We were extremely lucky to have the builder of our mast, Pete Kula from Applied Composite Technologies (composites.com.au) in Australia here to help us Our mast is approx 26m long and made of carbon fibre. It's got 3 spreaders and the standing rigging consists of 2 cap shrouds and 3 sets of diagonals (d1, d2 and d3). Rigging on boats is usually tensioned by hand using turnbuckles. But for boats and rigging over a certain size, this is no longer possible as force needed produce so much heat that it would cause the turnbuckles to deform. In this case, a hydraulic jack is used instead. Let's see how much force we will tune our rig to! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you enjoyed this video please consider supporting us on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/SailingNV or with a one-off donation via https://ko-fi.com/sailingnv or paypal https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/sailingnv -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Caio! We are Timo and Jo, an Italian and English couple with countless ocean miles under our belts. We're refitting an ex Vendée Globe Open 60 race boat originally designed & built & raced by famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa. He competed in her in the 1992 Vendée Globe (round the world single handed race known as “the Everest of the seas”), finishing 5th, becoming the first non-frenchman to finish. We are currently in Fiji giving this old gladiator a new lease on life, transforming her from an ex race boat to a performance family cruiser, which we'll need to make both dog and baby proof! We’re planning to set sail again in Oct 2022, so with limited time&money we have plenty of challenges ahead to turn our dreams into reality&get back on the water! For a few days we stick around Nantwich, go out for lunch, trek to find drinkable water, detour through a park, and learn about Telford's Aqueduct and the notches made by horse ropes all those years ago! There's always another issue on a boat, always some problem to overcome. Today's is a leaky weed hatch. The old seal was only done just before we set out on the voyage to get the baseplate done, about 6 weeks before this video. The seal looked like it had melted which threw me a little, and I thought "surely the water coming off the prop couldn't be that hot?!". It took a little while to think through, but I suspect it was melted by either the methods used to remove the old base replate, or in the process of welding the new one on. The uxter plate (the flat bit around the prop area on the outside) was also replated, which is adjacent to the weedhatch. Another thing I didn't know would need fixing after a baseplate job. The list just keeps on growing! The two places I mention in this week's video: Enzo: https://www.enzouk.com/ GFC Hardware: https://en-gb.facebook.com/GFCHardware/
This has been a tough week for us with lots to do in very little time. Work is decided by the number of boat projects and time by Visa. As the boat projects keep increasing our visa is about to expire. Having anticipated this we have been trying to get an extension to our Visa. If we do not get the extension we would have to come back to India and apply for our Visa again. Looks like this is just the beginning of our Visa Struggles ... We are Keeping The Faith!! Fun video recapping the 2022 sailing season first shown during our annual year end awards banquet. It wasn't until the end of the season that we had the fleet repaired and back into the water after the devastating 2021 storm. Like normal, the video begins with a 1930's style NewsReel short. Actual video starts at 1:28 if you want to skip ahead. https://youtu.be/bVzKysBeEas?t=88 Most of the music is by one of our fleet's founding members, some Bensong and royalty free added too. Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn’t have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane. However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on. We hope you can join us as we sail around the world and keep #bloodydoingit #sailing #boatlife

After successfully sailing most of the way to Annapolis from Middle River, our mission was to grab a mooring ball. We were successful getting a ball in Front Forty which positioned us close to the harbor with a short dinghy ride. We spent 3 weeks in Annapolis so we could stay through to experience our first ever Annapolis Sailboat Show. It was such a fun and incredible experience to be around so many like-minded sailors and cruisers. We met so many amazing folks and even got to arrange a CSY meetup while there. We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. But for these people it's a dream, or may not even be a dream. We will look around and when the opportunity to help comes we will put our hands and hearts in to it. #sailingoceanfox
It's been a rough few weeks for the crew and they thought they might be out of the woods after getting the broken propeller replaced. Little did they know; that was only the beginning of their concerns. In this episode, the crew sails from Guadeloupe to Dominica and Martinique, and it is NOT an easy ride. Multiple encounters with law enforcement, dragging anchor, and getting lost on a hellish hike. But make no mistake that the crew had their fun in this episode too while they checked out the night life in Guadeloupe and then lucked out with some fresh caught Mahi for dinner!
