Transiting the Corinth Canal…hub of an ancient world…Ep 11 As we approach the Corinth Canal we are drawn from the Ionian on the Western side of the Canal to the Aegean on the Eastern Side. The transit is only half an hour but the history of the place takes us back 3000 years to Ancient Corinth. In this episode we leave Nafpaktos, that city of the Battle of Lepanto of 1571 and Don Quixote! We sail cross the Gulf of Corinth and take and easy and enlightening transit through the Corinth Canal with reflections of the amazing history of this crossroads of the ancient world. Ancient Corinth became one of the worlds most important trading centres at that time. The Greeks and then the Romans who ruled this magnificently rich city worshiped a pantheon of Gods from Apollo, to Athena, Poseidon and many more. The crossing of the Isthmus of Corinth was so important that in the early years of the first century AD the Roman Emperors dreamt of digging a canal to cross the Isthmus. Sailing around the Penepolese was so dangerous for the ships of the time, that for centuries ships were dragged across for a fee to avoid having to round the Penepolese. The fees chaged for this crossing adn the trade it attracted all made Corinth a wealthy and bustling city. And then in that first century AD the Apostle Paul came founding the first Church of Corinth that would bring Christianity to slowly replace the worship of the ancient Gods. This Episode is a reflection of this history as we transit the Canal and enter the Aegean with all the Islands of Greece laid out before us. Traveling by sailboat can be many things. Beautiful without a doubt, challenging with unwelcome surprises, and also wonderfully enlightening. Coming to Greece from the Ionian and entering through the Corinth is definitely enlightening. Historically fascinating. In the next episode its the beauty of the East Coast of the Penepolese. Hello From The SEA !!!!! There are certain places in the world, where Sea merges into the Ocean. Due to merging of these two different water bodies, abnormal phenomenon is prevalent in that area. During our last voyage, we encountered one such geographical phenomenon " FUNNEL EFFECT " This phenomeneon results in strong abnormal water currents to prevail in that area, that causes reduction in speed of Ships transiting through that area. Selat LOMBOK Strait is a water body that connects Bali Sea to Indian Ocean. Located in between Bali and Lombok Island of Indonesia. We had to pass through Lombok Strait during our voyage from Australia to China. Where we encountered strong adverse currents. Lotta and Gitte go horseback riding, we are weathering out some heavy rain in the boat, we visit one of Europes few tea plantations and tea factories and we find ourselves in a sea of tea, after that we drive around visiting some of the classic sightseeing places such as the green and blue lake, we even go underground into a lava tube before it's time to leave our little sailor mark on the pier and Anders lubricate some blocks before it's time to set sail to Santa Maria. Our goal is not to go to a specific place but to reach a state of mind where we can really enjoy life. Anders has been at the sea most of his life and sailed for the Swedish national dingy sailing team as a young man. Gitte has also grown up with boats and spent every summer sailing with her father as a teenager but made a pause of about 15 years without sailing as an adult, had just begun to pick-up the interest before she meet Anders in 2017. Onboard we also have our cat Litza a 4 year old Devon Rex we call her the cattain because cats always decide over their humans. Fridá af Wisby is a Wauquiez 47 pilot saloon that we Gitte and Anders bought in UK in 2019 and that we have sailed to Gotland and in season 1 2020 we sail in the Baltic Sea. During season 2 We sailded south to Dieppe Normandy France. After a winter in France in Season 3 we started to sail the Atlantic coast of Europe to Xufre in Spain where we lifted the boat over the summer while we where back in Gotland to work at our hostel we got there. Season 4 got a short sailing season where we only sailed to Lagos on the Algarve coast of Portugal where we hauled out once again this time to go throug a long list of boatwork and to build a solar arch to make the boat more self-suficient with electricity. After 6 months in Lagos we kicked-off season 5 with real bluewater sailing first to the northerly Atlantic island Porto Santo and Madeira and then further out to the Azores that lays in the middle of the Atlantic ocean before turning back towards the mainland and south coast of Portugal again.
