We sail Kashmir to Biloxi Mississippi and then head to Ship Island putting up Jim's Spinnaker in some extremely light winds. We take Galactica to Cat island for our last full day on the water and bypass a storm on the way back to Gulfport--looked really bad at first but it quickly changed and we sailed westward to bypass the path. The last morning we pulled Galactica and de-rigged her for the long haul home. Episode 18: Boat Prep Buff and Polish This week we had beautiful weather and we’re able to get outside for some dedicated boat work time. We are prepping the boat in many ways which we will share over the next few weeks to set sail. First things first, buff and polish before we can put the Bimini and Dodger back on. We also have a lot of stainless which needs some attention to remove the rust and rub a protectant to extend its life. We also removed rust stains from the gel coat before buffing. We take a step back in time to finish the engine rebuild series, where I finish rebuilding the head and top end of my Yanmar 3Y30 diesel engine from my hurricane damaged Antares 44 catamaran that was damaged by Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas. It's a small makeover on the engine as I show you the process I go through to get the engine running again. It's always nice to know there is hope for an engine if your sailboat sinks.

Gitte has also grown up with boats and spent every summer sailing with her father as a teenager but made a pause of about 15 years without sailing as an adult, had just begun to pick-up the interest before she meet Anders in 2017. Onboard we also have our cat Litza a 4 year old Devon Rex we call her the cattain because cats always decide over their humans. Fridá af Wisby is a Wauquiez 47 pilot saloon that we Gitte and Anders bought in UK in 2019 and that we have sailed to Gotland and in season 1 2020 we sail in the Baltic Sea. During season 2 We sailded south to Dieppe Normandy France. After a winter in France in Season 3 we started to sail the Atlantic coast of Europe to Xufre in Spain where we lifted the boat over the summer while we where back in Gotland to work at our hostel we got there. Season 4 got a short sailing season where we only sailed to Lagos on the Algarve coast of Portugal where we hauled out once again this time to go throug a long list of boatwork and to build a solar arch to make the boat more self-suficient with electricity. After 6 months in Lagos we kicked-off season 5 with real bluewater sailing first to the northerly Atlantic island Porto Santo and Madeira and then further out to the Azores that lays in the middle of the Atlantic ocean before turning back towards the mainland and south coast of Portugal again.

The TRUE TEST of our 30-YEAR-OLD CATAMARAN as we finish our 1400 MILE OFFSHORE PASSAGE. Yes, it was a disaster to get a new st st arch on Exodos! Really nothing was right, no 90 degrees angles, nothing parallel, they tried to make it level while the boat wasn't level, and even corrected the wrong pieces of pipe in the wrong direction. It's a miracle the new arch didn't explode :-) The video only gives a representation of the least disastrous moments. #193 ✍️Le mouillage est calme. Tout est paisible. Je suis certaine que vous avez déjà entendu cette remarque : « Là-bas, ils n’ont rien, mais ils sont heureux ». Le bien-être matériel dans les pays aisés n’éloignerait-il pas du vrai sens de la vie ? Les sourires sont par-tout, pourtant Haiti fait partie d’un des pays les plus pauvre au monde. Sur le dictionnaire, la définition de pauvre, se dit d’un lieu habité par des personnes qui sont, en majorité, dépourvues de biens, de ressources, de richesses. Alors oui, à l’île à vache, il n’y a pas d’électricité, d’eau courante, la télé. Oui, il n’y a pas d’ordinateur, de routes goudronnées et de téléphones dernier cris, mais la population a des choses que les pays développés perdent de plus en plus. Le sourire, la joie de vivre, le contact humain et l’instant présent. Chacun vit ici humblement. Certes, avec de très faibles ressources, mais dans la dignité. Jeff, nous en append sur les mœurs de son île. C’est un bon gars. Un petit jeune d’une vingtaine d’années qui veut s’en sortir. Il fait des études aux Cayes la semaine, aide sa maman et sa fratrie le week-end. Aujourd’hui, il nous fait visiter son village et nous explique à quoi les habitants sont confrontés. Le manque de moyen est évidement le point le plus important, ce qui engendre malgré le dispensaire, une carence incontestable de soins médicaux. Les pathologies peuvent être nombreuses et la privation de traitements fatale. Mais là, n’est pas l’unique peine qui touche ce petit pays. Depuis plus d’une décennie, les drames s’enchainent à Haïti. Les hostilités ont débuté avec le séisme de 2010, s’en sont suivis : choléra, ouragans, corruption, insécurité à la capitale, tremblement de terre en 2021, effondrement du gouvernement, sècheresses et j’en passe. Ici, « vivre équivaut à un combat permanent contre la détresse, un corps-à-corps contre l’adversité, un bras de fer contre la fatalité ». Le pays est piégé dans un cycle infernal de crises et de catastrophes, dont l’aide humanitaire ponctue les étapes. Mais le sursis à chaque fois est précaire et passager. D’ailleurs, depuis 2021, plus de fondations, plus d’associations sur l’ile. Tous ont déserté. Laissant derrière eux, les infrastructures que personnes ne touchent très respectueusement, même s’ils pourraient en faire profit. À toute l’infortune de ce peuple s’ajoute le changement climatique qui influe sur la montée des eaux et les sargasses, qui par le dégagement de leurs gaz lors de leur décomposition anaérobie corrodent les toits en tôles. C’est à croire qu’en certains lieux, les dieux se déchainent, la nature se venge ! N’allez donc pas parler dans ces contrées en détresse, d’écologie. Le ramassage des plastiques est pour eux, un mouvement de « riches » ! Les jeunes éduqués par les associations pour freiner ce fléau, en ont fait les frais de reproches ! Et que dire des écoles, quand on voit celle de Kay-Kok ! Pourquoi tant d’inégalité ? Le monde est complètement fou, emplit de paradoxe ! Quand ici, langoustes et citons caviars sont des pitances, ils n’en sont pas moins des mets de luxes dans nos pays dit « développés » ! N’y a-t-il pas là une injustice ? Nous nous rendons compte du privilège que nous apporte cette vie hors norme. Ce voyage qui nous mène, là où, peut-être, nous ne serions jamais passé, éveille nos consciences. Nous faits réfléchir sur l’incohérence de l’être humain. Sur l’antinomie de cet Homme, qui a au font de lui cet instinct de survie et pourtant se détruit. Chaque rencontre nous instruit et nous révèle ses facettes. La bonté d’un peuple appauvrie, sa générosité, et ses sourires nous émeuves. La Jaquimette nous attend. Un authentique bâtiment en dame-marie. Son capitaine, Vino, nous amène faire un tour dans la baie. Les veilles voiles sont envoyées. Dons certains de plaisanciers, vu les logos. Elles ont ici, une deuxième vie. Montées sur du bambou en guise de mat et de bôme, elles se déploient, nous entrainant par la brise vers le large. Les gestes son ancestraux, la danse séculaire et nous sommes emportés par la magie du moment…Nous prenons le temps de discuter, de causer de la vie avec les jeunes et les moins jeunes. Les gardiens, les pêcheurs, les pisciculteurs, éleveurs, agriculteurs et charpentiers. Chacun nous confie un peu de sa vie, nous explique comment il gagne ses sous. L’immersion est complète, la sincérité entière et l’émotion à son comble chez Evelyne, la maman de Jeff. Today it marks a very important day to us ! We start the journey to our winter destination which is Montenegro on the other side of the Adriatic Sea. We are about 550 nautical miles form there and it will take us several days of non stop sailing ocean crossing to arrive there.
