We arrive in Antigua and pick up some friends to spend some time exploring this amazing set of islands. We spend a little time in Antigua, but the weather worked out so we could sail north to Barbuda and experience that wonderful island. We explore beautiful reefs, visit a frigate bird sanctuary, walk a pink sand beach, and cap off the day climbing through a cave to an impressive vista at the top of the limestone cliffs of Barbuda. We arrived at Petite Nevis, a little uninhabited island off the south of Bequia. The island was beautiful and secluded, there was one other yacht there and the water was beautiful. We headed to land and after we decided that the dingy landing wouldn’t be great for our hard bottom dingy, we had denver drop us off while we went to explore. The island is beautiful and untouched. There is a man old whaling station that is apparently not used anymore. The snorkelling between where we anchored and the shore was beautiful, there were tons of fish and coral. We headed across the Friendship Bay in Bequia which is also on the north east coast of Bequia. It was a quiet and beautiful little bay. As soon as we stepped onshore it immediately felt so different from the rest of the islands we had been to. The colours of the houses, the abundance of different coloured flowers that lined the streets and the goats that were chilling under the trees gave friendship bay a beautifully quaint feeling. We explored around the bay for a few days but when the swell started turning easterly we decided the anchorage was getting quite rolly and we headed out to the main anchorage of Bequia - Admiralty Bay .

We leave Deal Island very early in the morning and head to the protected anchorage of Port Davey on Flinders Island. After a quick walk on the beach and headland checking out the mutton bird nesting site, we head to Lady Baron Island but divert to Trouser Point with concerns over some unusual engine noise. We look at the fleet in the last 48 hours. For 50 years of The Ocean Race, sailors have considered the Southern Ocean leg, the racing that takes place between Cape Town and Cape Horn, deep in the southern latitudes, as the biggest milestone in the event. Rounding Cape Horn marks the end of the southern conditions, where deep low pressure systems follow one after the other, unimpeded by land masses, the gale force winds building towering, fearsome seas. Icebergs are to the south and the leg culminates with a squeeze around Cape Horn, where the land juts as far as 56-degrees south latitude, funneling the winds and waves through a narrow passage firmly in the area sailors call the Furious 50s.

In March of 2023 we attended TrawlerFest in beautiful Stuart, Florida and for the first time since 2020, JMYS had a boat in the show! This video was filmed on Saturday, March 4th, the second to last day of the boat show. Follow along as JMYS brokers Jeff Merrill and Mark Pittman show you around! Attendees loved the short scenic walk to the docks, stopping to take photos and watch herons, cranes and osprey’s hunting in the sand bars along the way, and keeping their eyes peeled for manatees. The water was beautiful, and the air temperature was a comfortable 85 degrees, thanks to a steady breeze that kept the humidity at bay. Our Nordic Tug 42 listing, Fog Dog was a busy destination, staffed with Katy Boyle on the dock and Elle Conwell in the cockpit as the welcoming committee/shoe security, both directing people inside to broker Mark Pittman. Many attendees commented that they had never been aboard a Nordic Tug before and loved the quality of the interior wood, open galley/saloon area, and the natural light that poured in from the pilothouse above. The stunning views from the flybridge allowed them to check out all the boats in the show from a bird’s eye view! The New Normal | Learning the ropes of boat life Things will never be the same again. You can’t just pop out for a carton of milk or quick bite with friend. Things need to planned out, weather checked, anchor secured and dinghy deployed. We have had the pleasure of being at marinas for the last couple of months while we prepared for our big trip south to the Bahamas. This meant for the most part having our boat tied up and secured, and having a vehicle of some sort for all of our provisioning needs. Now, our Highfield dinghy is our car and we need to make sure that our Honu is safe and secure before we leave for extended periods of time. This is a very stressful thing. There are so many factors that can affect the likelihood that your floating home will be right where you left it a couple of hours later. It’s not just set the anchor and take off. We need to check the weather, wind, currents, and tides. This is not for the big boat but for traveling distances in the dinghy. And if that wasn’t stressful enough now, we need to locate the dinghy dock where we can safely leave our dinghy and hope that it will still be there when we get back with all of our items. We know that this is all part of the adventure and there is something exciting about the whole thing but your nerves are always a bit on when these things go out of your site line and you have to hope that you did all the right things. As we do this more it will get easier just like all things on the boat. But for now we worry a bit too much, and I’m ok with that. Thank you for being here, for watching and supporting our channel. Wir, Emely und Tjark, haben uns den Traum vom eigenen Segelboot erfüllt, eine Maxi 84, relativ spontan und ohne das ganz große Geld. Wir nehmen dich mit auf unsere Reise von blutigen Anfängern zu hoffentlich passablen Seglern. Getauft wurde sie auf den stolzen Namen Meera. Nach dem ersten Winterlager mit der Überarbeitung des Unterwasserschiffs, sind wir 2022 in unsere erste Segelsaison gestartet. Also kommt mit auf unsere Reise die Welt zu erkunden, für den Anfang erstmal die Ostsee. Da wir noch echte Rookies sind, müssen wir erstmal lernen zu Segeln und was es heißt abhängig von der Natur zu sein. Bevor es in die weite Welt hinaus geht, liegt noch ein Berg an Arbeit vor uns. We are sailing through the Hole in the Wall. Our sailboat squeezes through the 50m gap in remote cliffs of the wild Northern Territory. The Gugari Rip, or Hole in the Wall, is our portal to the Wessel Islands, where we catch our first Giant Trevally. We heard the fishing was good in the Northern Territory. Enjoying the episodes?
